Sometimes a single gift can have amazing impact. There were plenty of examples in the 2005-2006 fiscal year, and they reflect the spirit of gifts from earlier generations. When “Mama” Gambetta elected to leave land and funds for Priory students’ education, she couldn’t have known what a powerhouse that gift would become—but she surely would have been pleased. Page 18.

Several gifts rolled into one have a power bigger than the sum of the individual parts.

The annual fund, the auction and the parent volunteer hours are good examples. They not only make school as we know it possible on an annual basis, they also make good planning possible because the donors have never let the Priory down. As some leave the system, others arrive with the same enthusiasm for Priory students and Benedictine education. Page 22.

The gifts to the campus being provided by people who support the Golden Jubilee campaign projects are critically important. They provided much-needed space and educational support now, and they are the foundation of the next 50 years. Funding is still needed to complete the Trinity Project construction and renovation. The entire project can’t be completed unless the funding gap is closed. Page 26.

his magnificent photograph of Father Egon Javor, Abbot Matthew Leavy and Father Martin Mager evokes beautifully the spirit of Woodside Priory School and its Benedictine education. It was taken at a Nov. 11 mass celebrating Father Egon’s ninetieth birthday and the monastic community’s fiftieth anniversary.

This year, 2006-2007, we celebrate the incredible story of the monks’ arrival in Portola Valley, where they purchased land and rolled up their sleeves to create a monastic community and a school.

Throughout the school’s Golden Jubilee anniversary beginning in September 2007, we will remember and thank all of the faculty, staff, families and supporters who brought the school successfully to the 21st century.

When the Trinity Project is completed, the Priory will be ready for the new millennium. As the Golden Jubilee campaign logo says, the “new” Priory reflects the needs of the community for “Now . . . and our next 50 years.”

This annual report issue explores the power of a gift—of time, talent, or treasure. The story is told primarily through the comments of teachers and students—they reflect most succinctly the power and purpose of gifts in the educational community.

The issue is divided into five sections which explore the different aspects of giving, receiving and sharing. The impact is holistic, however; please read the lists of annual and campaign support as part of a whole upon which the Priory depends.

Winter at

Priory Basketball Reaches New Heights Priory boys basketball players are a formidable presence this season.

The team gets an extra boost from Hungarian brothers George and Gregory Somogyi, a six-foot-five senior and seven-foot-one junior respectively, and Reggie Willhite, a six-foot-three senior. Over Christmas vacation, the Panthers broke Sacred Heart’s 78-game winning streak in the Private Schools Athletic League.

Not Rain Nor Snow Nor Gloom . . .

Through the cold, windy and rainy days of December and freezing January, Priory’s outstanding construction crew was at work, and the long-awaited Performing Arts Center auditorium and classrooms are going up on schedule.

Valjean and Javert Face Off “Les Miserables”, the musical that swept Broadway by storm and is now the most performed and popular musical in the world, opens for a two-week run this spring on the Priory Assembly hall stage. This school edition contains all of the songs, dialogue and story of the original but has been trimmed by the original creators to run two hours in length.

Registrar Barbara Falk Retires Almost 30 years ago, when Barbara Falk was the Priory’s switchboard operator, she managed campus communication by literally connecting people. Today, as the Priory’s registrar and assistant to the deans, she is still at the hub of a communications network. She is responsible for nearly all of the official record-keeping, from attendance to transcripts to PowerSchool. She provides a copy service for faculty and information service for students and parents; she knows who does what and where everybody is.

Her skill, knowledge and especially her friendly smile will be missed when she retires in June 2007 after completing her 30th year. Mrs. Falk first worked at the Priory as a temporary employee, standing in for her mother-in-law, Kay, who needed several weeks of medical leave. When Kay returned to her job in the kitchen, Barb stayed and shortly moved to the switchboard. In 1981, she became assistant to Father Simon, who was Prior at that time, and later moved into her current position.

“The Priory has been so fortunate to have such a dedicated and committed employee as Barb. Her presence and willingness to help in any crisis or situation will make her shoes very hard to fill. We wish her well,” said Tim Molak.

Trudelles at State Chrissa Trudelle follows a family tradition in running competitively all the way to State level, where she placed 24th of 166. Like Chrissa, brothers Steven and Peter ran in state-level competition in their junior and senior years.

Father Francis Brings Zambia to Priory Father Francas Shawa, a colleague in the international Benedictine educators association, spent several weeks on the campus in late fall sharing his school’s stories, pictures and music with Priory students and teachers. The Katibunga school serves boys and girls of all grades; the photo is of the older high school students.

Fast Facts Fall 2006 School Community: A small school by choice and design.

High School: 254 Middle School 96 52% male, 48% female Boarding Students: 49 45% female 55% male This year, international boarding students are from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, India, Germany, China and Hungary. Most U.S. residents live within a 50-mile radius of the campus with a few coming from Northern California, the Midwest and Puerto Rico. International and United States residents are about equally divided.

Tuition, Financial Aid and Cost of Education Tuition: $26,700 for day students and $34,932 for boarding students (includes lunches and most school activities). Twenty-one percent of students, both day and boarding, received some financial aid. From a pool of $1.28 million, the average grant was $17,288.

Eighteen percent of the financial aid budget went to targeted less-advantaged student populations. Three students were awarded Benedictine Scholarships for graduates of local Catholic schools. That scholarship pool was $45,000.

The actual cost of a Priory education is nearly $4,000 per student more than tuition and fees. This difference is covered mainly by the Annual Fund, Auction and special gifts to the school. About 90% of parents and many members of the Priory’s extended community of alumni, relatives and friends help close this gap.

Scholastic Achievement National Merit—eight commended scholars, one semifinalist; almost 13% of the senior class.

Advanced Placement Test Scores—116 students took 259 exams. On a scale of 1 (highest) through 5, 90% of these exams scored 3 or better; more than 73% scored a 4 or 5.

Advanced Placement Scholars—39% of students who took the exams achieved scholar status. Fourteen were AP Scholars, 13 were Scholars with Honors, 18 were Scholars with Distinction and 2 were National Scholars—the highest designation.

SAT Scores—Mathematics average: 658, Critical Reasoning average: 628; Writing average: 630 Courses and Activities H-Block Clubs and Activities—36 Some are for course credit, some are without credit to allow students a chance to explore without concern for their grade point average.

Advanced Placement Courses—19 New Course Electives— nine, including Marine Biology, Oceanography, History of Rock & Roll, History of Islam, Visions of Excess, Theology through Lit and Film, Beginning Computer Programming, Master Acting Lab, and Writing for Performance.

Most popular activity—athletics, with nearly all Middle School and about 75% of High School students participating in team sports. Visual and Performing Arts also score high in student participation.

Student-Teacher Ratios Class size—Average is 12.4 students. The vast majority of classes are between 14 and 18 students. Some classes in grades 10-12 have smaller numbers of students.

Teacher/Student Ratio—The full-time-equivalent teacher/student ratio is 9 to 1. The ratio of teachers and student support staff to students is 6 to 1.

Admissions Locally, the day student applicant pool for both the High School and Middle School remained stable.

There was a significant increase in boarding student applications from American as well as international applicants. Campus leadership continues to reach out to our international community as a way of becoming a truly global community. The establishment and active role of Priory Parent Associations around the world is very welcome and encouraging.

W

hat a banner year 2005 2006 was for Woodside Priory! All indicators say that the Priory as an educational institution is (to borrow a business management term) “up and to the right.” In the first semester of 2006-2007, those indicators are still strong. Here are a few achievements over the past 18 months.

• In spring 2006, we achieved the maximum accreditation (6 years) from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, following a through self-examination and on-campus scrutiny by a visiting team of educators.

• In the Middle School, a concentrated effort to revitalize and consolidate the curriculum last year has paid off this year. “Core classes” –extended blocks of time to concentrate on language arts and academic skill-building—were created.

Students’ standardized test scores this fall show very positive results, and faculty feedback is equally positive.

• High School students have a broader variety of elective classes to choose from. They are attaining a richer community service experience since the program was integrated with classroom academics. Students now have more time for preparation, personal reflection and classroom discussions about issues of social justice.

• We continue to work with B-E-NET, the international Benedictine educators’ association.

• The new Academic Resource Center, now in its second year, is a huge asset. A learning specialist and counselor provide one-on-one support for all students. This team also helps teachers and parents offer effective support.

From the Head of School • Last year, the faculty took a hard look at homework assignments and scheduling during the school day in an effort to reduce student stress. We are watching this year to see if the changes are effective.

• We continue to be a first-choice, highly regarded college prep school on the midPeninsula. We continue to expand our international community and maintain those ties. As we are able to build our endowment and scholarship funds, we look forward to sharing a Priory education with an increasingly diverse student body.

We are being guided this year by a new booklet, Being Benedictine, published by our parent abbey, Saint Anselm College and Abbey. It is an insightful look at how monastic and lay people live out the Rule of Saint Benedict and the meaning of its values.

I see everyone in the Priory community—trustees, parents, students, faculty and staff—helping to support this goal. The vignettes throughout this annual report offer just a glimpse of the ubiquitous sharing of personal time, talents and treasures. With this foundation, we will be all we can be. Letter From the Board Chair Priory Community

O

n behalf of the Board of Trustees I want to warmly thank all of you for your support of Woodside Priory School. That support begins when you who are parents entrust your children’s education to our teachers and administrators, and that support continues in so many other ways. Your volunteerism helps create the kind of community spirit that St. Benedict envisioned. Your generosity helps the school reach out to those who need financial aid, and that increases many kinds of diversity at the school. Your visionary support is helping us rebuild and replace our aging infrastructure.

The Golden Jubilee campaign phase one is entering the home stretch as the Performing Arts Center buildings begin to rise from our former parking lot. Also our hopes rise for the completion of the campaign, a campaign that has already raised over 75% of its goal. We need to reach the finish line if we are to complete all the projects envisioned by the campaign, and we count on the continued support of our generous benefactors, and look for new support from the entire Priory Community.

The Board of Trustees is very proud of how much progress has been made in the past several years. Financially, the operations of the school are much stronger than several years ago, and our long-range planning indicates that this will continue in the coming years. The strength is built on the responsible planning of our administrators and the continued efforts of our advancement offices. The Admissions Office is responsible for finding the qualified students to join us each year and the Development Office for reaching out to the Priory community and beyond for their assistance.

Our family has been at the Priory for eight years, with our oldest son, Clint, in college now, and Wes in seventh grade. I have noticed over this time that a majority of the Board of Trustees are not parents of current students. Members of the local community who recognize the value of an independent school in Portola Valley donate their time and effort to help guide the school forward. Their experience and insight are invaluable. Often they help the Priory focus past our current concerns and identify the challenges that are coming in the future. Also, the monastic community, both through the Board of Trustees and through the governing Board of Directors, helps us all understand the tradition that comes with being Benedictine. That often strengthens our resolve to withstand the pressures of modern society, while still preparing students for a world in need of their gifts.

With the diverse sources of support we enjoy, I am confident the Priory’s strength will continue to grow in the coming years.

Financially, the operations of the school are much stronger than several years ago, and our long range planning indicates that this will continue.

The Priory Faculty Offers Gifts of Heart and Talent Priory teachers have special gifts, and they know how to share them. Students benefit in their relationships with these teachers, who encourage them to discover and develop their own passions and talents. A Priory education demands teachers with more than academic and teaching excellence—it demands their ability to have genuine relationships with many students and to be a role model for all students. The process is transparent; teachers and students understand well the ways in which the Priory works for them.

The Board of Trustees has for several years striven to keep faculty salaries in the upper quartile of comparable Bay Area schools.

On-campus housing and faculty-driven professional development also make a significant difference in attracting and retaining the best administration, faculty and staff. The Priory exudes a positive attitude and sense of “home” that many schools lack. Perhaps that is why the students selected “Things Just Keep Getting’ Better” and “There’s No Place Like Home” for their themes last year and this year, respectively.

Woodside Priory School is filled with teachers who love and look forward to their work, and this quality is a great gift to students. Yvonne Faisal is an example—and she is typical of all faculty on the Priory roster. A former engineer in the high tech industry, Ms. Faisal now teaches upper level math and leads a very popular “Life 101” club at the Priory. She says she appreciates the Benedictine values, and she projects a calm, grounded spirituality. The complete package makes her popular with students and colleagues.

Yvonne says a special gift the Priory brings to her is the strong support system among the teachers, administrators and parents. “Unlike a corporate environment, people here will jump in and help you whenever you need it.” She does the same. For example, when the faculty began a major overhaul of the campus schedule, she took her engineering problemsolving skills from industry and used them to manage a range of conflicts, needs and variables through several months of changes.

Ms. Faisal’s daughter is a seventh grade student at WPS. As a parent, Ms. Faisal says the Priory “is a truly warm place. Everyone involved with the school really cares about each student.”

Campus Ministry Creates Meaning, Focus and Stability

Listen. It is the sound of the chapel bells ringing on Tuesday at mid-morning. Watch. The Priory community heads from all corners of the school campus to congregate in the chapel. For Woodside Priory students, this is a weekly routine that establishes the Benedictine way of life at its core—a gift that becomes an important part of each student’s life.

John Erkman, Dean of Students and Assistant Head of the School, describes weekly chapel as the equivalent of gathering for a family dinner. Good news, sad news, upcoming events, conversations with guests, behavioral expectations and limits, joyful things and confusing things all get shared. From the stories of others, students learn important lessons about the lives that make up the pulse of their school.

A teacher tells them to find passion in their lives, based on her own love of the triathlon. Father Maurus recounts his personal experiences in the Hungarian revolution as a young man of eighteen. A brave student talks about losing a father to a horrific disease. A guest speaker—a former Priory student and teacher—describes how his science education led him to satisfying work as a fisherman and leader in marine preservation. Mr. Erkman brings up breaches in acceptable behavior—ahem!

Ask the students and they will say that weekly chapel is occasionally solemn, often mildly funny to downright hilarious, and, for many, frequently a centering and thought-provoking influence. One example: following the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers, one alumnus at college in New York City “came home” to Priory chapel.

Therese Inkmann, Campus Ministry Coordinator, has an admirable enthusiasm for her job that permeates chapels, community service projects, class retreats, quick responses to special needs—every aspect of the school’s campus ministry. As a member of the Guidance and Counseling staff, she also is on call to help a struggling student or support the campus community through an unexpectedly emotional time.

An English and Religious Studies major at Santa Clara University, Ms. Inkmann taught at other independent schools before joining the Priory. Just before joining the school almost five years ago, Ms. Inkmann spent four months at a silent monastery in California; an experience that she says brought focus to her life.

During her second year at WPS, Therese re-introduced the concept of service learning, which integrates course work with students’ volunteer experience. This approach allows for better preparation and reflection, which gives students’ experiences more meaning. For example, each eighth grade student is now a pen pal through their English class with a resident at Lytton Gardens senior residential community. Together, as a class, they will meet their pen pals later in the school year. High school examples include work with newly arrived refugee families at a Catholic Charities relocation center, and helping with food service for the homeless in San Francisco’s tenderloin. For students’ personal volunteer hours, Ms. Inkmann keeps an up-to-date, researched list of a wide range of opportunities to suit Priory students’ varied interests and time commitments.

“I liked the chapel where Mr. Marsheck described his triathlon. . . . It was helpful and inspirational because it shows how real people run and get through it. In addition, he talked about how God helped him through some parts of it. Now, in cross-country, I can see what he was talking about.�

Single Gifts Have a Powerful Impact Some gifts arrive just in the nick of time, as though a good fairy had come to the rescue.

For example, In December 2005, when it looked as though all of the work and love poured into the Trinity Project might be for naught, a gift of $1 million very literally saved the day.

Alvin and Suzanne Maas (parents, classes of 2000 and 2003) had the vision to initiate additional on-campus housing, and they worked tirelessly to bring that vision to reality in the Maas Family Commons. In another example, Priory music students were the main beneficiaries, and the entire campus benefited from a two-year artists-in-residence program that brought young professional musicians to the campus.

Love of the Priory community, or Benedictine values, or both, is usually behind planned gifts. Planned gifts take the form of a donation to be realized in the future, within the donor’s lifetime or in the donor’s estate. One recent donor demonstrates both. He had planned to leave $1 million to the Priory in his estate, but made the gift in his lifetime to underwrite the cost of the Golden Jubilee campaign. With that seed money, nearly $17 million already has been raised.

When the founding monks settled in Portola Valley, Caroline Gambetta lived on the adjacent farm and managed it with her husband and son. When they died, she managed it alone. The monks developed a firm friendship with her and, within the community, began calling her “Mama.” The Priory became Mrs. Gambetta’s source of solace and support. She was especially close to Father Egon and Louis Kovacs, the Priory groundskeeper for 41 years who retired in 2005. Louis’s wife, Klara, and their baby often spent time at Mrs. Gambetta’s, even though Klara had just arrived from Hungary and spoke almost no English!

Eventually, Mama Gambetta wanted to give something to the school. Originally, she thought of a chapel but in the end elected to give her land to be used for the education of the students.

Today, the original and new on-campus housing, the maintenance facilities, robotics lab, wood shop, community garden and environmental science lab all rest on Mrs. Gambetta’s land. The hilltop open space behind the campus is also her gift. She also contributed a substantial sum towards a modern gymnasium, which is today the cornerstone of the WPS Gambetta Gymnasium and Athletic Center. Today, her gifts are literally the foundation upon which much of the school rests, and they have over the decades created a world of good far bigger than she could have known. It is fitting that Gambetta Lane leads to the crest of the campus.

Collective Gifts’ Impact Exceeds the Sum of the Parts In the Bible, the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14) is meant to encourage everyone to take his or her own gifts, however big or small, and make them grow. Priory students are asked to do just this at the Lenten season every year.

They rely on their own (not their parents’) funds and abilities, combine their results and decide collectively where to donate their funds.

Annual giving from the Priory adult community does something similar for the students every year. A predictable annual fund and source of volunteer support makes effective planning possible. The annual gifts cover about 15% of the operating budget; without it the school could not assure continuity in class size, quality of teaching staff, variety of courses and activities, field trips and service activities, and much more.

Both the individual effort and the collective gift of time, expertise and funds are truly appreciated. They pack a punch more powerful than each year’s bottom line.

Theater is an art created by community—from actors, directors and techies, to audience and, at the Priory, to our quintessential volunteers.

Every parent of an actor in a Priory Theater production provides incredible support throughout the process. On an individual level it can consist of drilling lines with the actors at home or providing rides to those that don’t yet drive. When they work together, something truly remarkable occurs.

Working side-by-side with their sons and daughters, parents help construct the sets over a weekend, paint them under the guidance of our Tech Director and Designer, hang and rig lights, and assemble the audience risers. It is an incredible effort with extraordinary results. In addition they volunteer to work concessions, box office and other support positions, which not only heightens theatergoers’ experience but also raises funds to improve our equipment and the educational quality of our productions.

The experience is bonding between parent and child, between parents, and is always good for some interesting stories after each show. (continued)

Chavez Joins ‘Bridge Kids’ Alejandro Chavez, Priory alumnus and grandson of civil rights leader Cezar Chavez, met with students from the Peninsula Bridge academic outreach program in the Gambetta gymnasium. Head of School Tim Molak is chair this year of a committee of principals whose schools are involved in the program. Peninsula Bridge was founded in the early 1990s by Les DeWitt, who was at the time a member of the Woodside Priory Board of Trustees.

The Priory Is at a Turning Point The Priory is at a turning point—one that was recognized almost a decade ago. The excellent education and school inherited from the founders was aging and needed revitalizing.

In 1997, administrators and board of trustees members initiated a wide-ranging study that, at its conclusion, called for a re-tooling of educational offerings, a competitive compensation package, and modern facilities to support this Priory of the new millennium.

The education and compensation changes accomplished a few years ago are working well, and the Priory is a highly regarded academic institution with sound financing.

The need for facilities remains, and funding for the Trinity Project is incomplete. The education and compensation goals were achieved by adjusting income and expense categories of the annual budget. New facilities can’t be funded in this way—only gifts can generate the millions of dollars needed in a short time frame. Generous donors with a passion for the Priory’s values have propelled the project forward, but at the same time cost increases have raised the bar.

A second turning point will occur as the monks retire and lay leaders take more responsibility. While the last three aren’t planning on retiring any time soon, lay leaders are already taking more leadership. Funding the monks’ retirement and preserving their school are high priorities.

PAC Architect Envisions Creative Life and Green Buildings Steve Kelley, AIA, Co-Founder and Principal of San Francisco’s MKTHINK, is the architect for the Priory’s Performing Arts auditorium and classrooms, currently under construction. “As architects and thinkers, we consider ourselves creative people. To be a part of helping the Priory community envision an arts facility that nurtures the creative process has special significance and is close to our hearts,” he said.

As Mr. Kelley describes it, the new performing arts facilities in conjunction with the school’s already outstanding faculty will allow the arts curriculum to flourish, opening the opportunity for creative moments that he believes can inspire a lifetime of learning.

“The performing arts center will allow the creative processes of the students to flourish in a way that hasn’t been possible. What I see . . .is a place where the mission of the school will also flourish; the center will embrace a creative community within the school community.”

The group of three buildings is a 15,000-square-foot trio of structures that manages a harmonious relationship with its natural environment.

One of the most innovative and sustainable features is a “Green Roof,” a living vegetative roof over the auditorium. “The keystone element of the project, which we’re most proud of, reflects the School’s values and curriculum – creating awareness of environmental stewardship. This project exceeds standards for green building.”

“In one bold stroke these new structures capture the commitment of the school and its parent community not just to the support of performing arts but to environmental stewardship as well.

As parents and givers, you should feel proud of that commitment,” Mr. Kelley added.

Woodside Priory School’s Performing Arts auditorium will also provide much-needed meeting space for assemblies, dances, graduations, and other events.

Two Gifts with a Single Snip!

Middle School Theology teacher Molly Buccola has always had long, blonde hair—but has always thought about getting a buzz cut.

When the Priory’s annual holiday food and funds drive began last semester, it seemed like a good time to finally do it, she said.

It is a tradition for a faculty member (male until this year) to shave his head if the campus community exceeds its goal for charity. Since she planned to get the haircut anyway, and donate her mane to “Locks of Love”, (where it will be made into a wig for a cancer patient) the timing seemed perfect— she could inspire additional giving and support someone facing a difficult course of medical treatment.

Initially, many of her students were uneasy with the idea of a radical change, she said, but she helped them understand that it was a small loss. “Hair is just hair. It will grow back,” she told them.

Father Stanley L. Jaki, OSB The Reverend Stanley Jaki is a professor of physics, a Benedictine priest, and a founding father of Woodside Priory School.

He is internationally recognized as a leading thinker in the philosophy of science, theology, and issues where the two disciplines intersect.

Father Jaki is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the prestigious Templeton Prize in 1987.

This annual award, now over $1 million, is given to further understanding of science and religion.

Father Jaki pursued post-doctoral work in the philosophy of science at Stanford, UC Berkeley, Princeton and the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton. He received honorary appointments or fellowships to work on the faculties at Yale, Edinborough, and Oxford Universities, among others. He is a prolific writer with two dozen books and numerous articles on this topic in print.
