WOW! This is the first word that comes to mind as 2021 Chair of the Board of Trustees when I think about the last 12 months. We can honestly say 2021 has been more challenging than 2020. It almost seems as if our commitment is being tested on so many levels. It has not been easy, but thankfully we have passed the tests and continue to have the honor and privilege to serve our community.

It appears the world has forever changed and we are all trying to determine the “new normal.” While we don’t know what the “new normal” will look like, we do know --no matter what—we have so many companion pets that need us. We also know we will not compromise our standards or our commitment when it comes to serving our community and our pets!

We are extremely proud of the fact that we have seen over the past 20 years our community go from a 90% euthanasia rate for shelter pets to a 15% rate or better yet an 85% LIVE RELEASE RATE! The intake numbers have also greatly decreased from 26,000 to 7,899. This has all been done by working as one team, Pawmetto Lifeline; the City of Columbia Animal Services; Richland County Animal Services; Lexington County Animal Services; and our local rescue organizations.

What this means (as was predicted by the national experts) is the lower the population gets in our shelters, the harder it is to place the reduced number of animals entering our shelters. So while we maintain our commitment to the shelter animals, the cost of care per animal is much higher. We are saving those that are sick, old, have behavior issues and need training. So not only is their care more expensive, they are harder to place which means they stay with our organization longer. But, they too deserve a chance at life and should not be euthanized just because they are of a certain breed, age or have multiple treatable medical issues.

This is why you and your support is critical to Pawmetto Lifeline’s life-saving mission. With every obstacle, YOU afford us the ability to work hard every day to find solutions that will better serve our pets and our community. With the vet shortage and the challenges with access to care, our medical programs will be in far more demand than ever before.

You are the lifeline of this organization! Thank you for believing in those that have no voice; thank you for giving them a second chance at life. There is no greater belief in a cause than when one is willing to invest personally of their time, treasures and talents to help us save the vulnerable. The manner in which we respond to all community issues is a reflection or our community’s values.

A New Beginning The thought of retirement was frightening. For 42 years, I had been part of the same fourth generation family-owned company. Working with family, our partners and associates – many who feel like family – was my life. Then I realized what a tremendous opportunity lay before me! Maybe there was life after career. Maybe there was a way to be fulfilled in other ways. And maybe, just maybe, I could focus on my other passion – helping homeless pets.

Fourteen years ago, I was enticed to join the Pawmetto Lifeline Board of Trustees. I was reluctant. Then I began to witness first-hand the incredible people who advocate, care for, protect and fight for those voices we wish we could hear. People can and do make a difference in not just the animals we save, but the people those animals save.

A Letter from our Co-Founder We have had countless challenges this year with a nationwide shortage of veterinarians and a terrible shortage of people not wanting to work, leaving us with a dedicated but exhausted staff. We have had more animal abuse cases and dire situations than ever before.

We could never have helped thousands of animals here in our community without you.

BENEFITTING HOMELESS DOGS AND CATS! Bark Around Your Block 2021

Our 2nd annual Bark Around Your Block event was held virtually in 2021 due to the Covid-19 restrictions. We are so grateful to our presenting sponsor, McDaniels Subaru for their continued support as we continue to adapt to the everchanging situation. The donations received from our annual event are intricate in providing the necessary medical and daily care to the more than 4,000 homeless pets in our care each year.

We were blown away with the 67 teams with more than 400 participants walking around their blocks to support homeless pets! Thanks to our generous sponsors, participants received a t-shirt and goody bag full of gifts for them and their pets.

VETERINARIAN SHORTAGE By: Denise Wilkinson, CEO Access-to-care is now a problem due to a state and national veterinarian shortage. South Carolina’s pets are having to go without basic medical care and vaccinations.

We were shocked in 2021 when the state and national veterinarian shortage hit Pawmetto Lifeline, private clinics, and the ERs so hard in SC. We worry that the veterinarian shortage means thousands of pets will go without the very basic preventatives likes vaccinations, and sick animals will not see a veterinarian in time to treat their medical issues before they are in crisis.

As one of the leaders of this organization, myself and the other dedicated board members are working diligently every day to create short-term solutions to address access to care issues that exist due to the veterinarian shortage. We need to replicate the human medical model. We need our veterinary community to put the needs of animals first and advocate for technicians to be trained to give vaccinations without a veterinarian/pet relationship. We all know how important it is for our dogs and cats to be vaccinated. We also know that technicians now give people their Covid vaccines without a doctor’s presence and we also know, as do the veterinarians, that kennel workers and animal control officers are allowed to euthanize dogs and cats without a veterinarian present.

During times of crisis, we must be willing to create changes that are for the betterment of our community and our companion pets. These changes can have a huge impact on care for animals in South Carolina. We need veterinarians to be allowed to do telemedicine appointments that are recognized as the veterinarian/client/patient relationship so that medications and diagnostics may be prescribed. This will allow veterinarians in other counties to work with a clinic to diagnose, prognose and define a care plan for sick pets. Leverage both licensed techs and unlicensed vet assistants/aides to do more services under the direct and indirect supervision of a vet.

These three simple changes will have a huge impact on access to care for companion pets in South Carolina. By expanding the role of technicians and telemedicine, our state will leverage the number of pets that will have access to care. These simple changes will allow the veterinarians working in shelters and private clinics to provide care for sick animals and provide spay/ neuter surgeries. This is critical in addressing the overpopulation issue of companion pets.

Our shelters in South Carolina are overwhelmed with animals.

At this writing, 52 out of 75 shelters have no veterinarian which means the animals are not getting care they need. Companion pets are not being vaccinated for rabies and many are not being altered prior to being adopted. These two issues alone will only create more challenges in the future, including public safety issues with rabies exposure for humans.

We are in unchartered territory with the veterinarian shortage, and it is the biggest crisis we are facing. Prices are going up and many people are already having to opt for euthanasia due to their personal financial constraints when it comes to medical services.

MEDICAL PROGRAMS SHELTER MEDICINE

Our Shelter Medicine team had a very busy year in 2021! With the Veterinarian shortage, it has been challenging to continue to provide the highest level of care for our shelter pets, but our team continues to rise to the challenge every day! Averaging between 40 – 60 pets per week, our shelter medicine doctors and support staff provide care including vaccines, heartworm tests, wound care, emergency triage, and more!

With the state and nationwide Veterinarian shortage, we have seen an increase in the amount of sick and injured animals that require our help. We regularly consult with local clinic partners, the emergency clinic, and specialists to ensure these pets are receiving the care necessary to become ready to find their forever home. Because of you, we can provide a chance at a full life for these sick, elderly, or hard-to-place pets.

SPAY AND NEUTER CLINIC

Pawmetto Lifeline’s Spay/Neuter Clinic offers high-volume surgeries for public pets and community cats. Pawmetto Lifeline’s Spay/Neuter Clinic continues to be busier than ever despite the ongoing pandemic and veterinarian shortage!

Our dedicated team of surgeons, assistants, and support staff performed a total of 10,132 spay/neuter surgeries for dogs and cats since January 1st, 2021, including 4,667 feral/community cats and 417 bully breeds. We also provided 173 free microchips for bully breeds in Lexington and Richland Counties.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and at Pawmetto Lifeline we think this frail, severely neglected cat is beautiful. Pretty Girl came to us via animal control as a good Samaritan had alerted them about a cat that was in horrible condition. Thankfully, the Animal Control Officer removed Pretty Girl from the property that day and we committed to give her a new positive experience with humans. She had a severe neck wound and unfortunately due to the sun exposure and living outside 24/7 she has squamous carcinoma.

She is also FIV positive which means all healing will take an extended period of time.

She has received the absolute best medical care from specialists and she continues to thrive in our CEO’s office.

She is slowly healing as she gets all the food she could possibly want, lots of treats, brushed daily, gets massages and now loves the touch of a hand.

The man that owned her and allowed her to live in this condition pled guilty to the charges and thankfully, Pretty Girl will spend the rest of her life at Pawmetto Lifeline. We are so grateful that we have donors that care about the severely neglected and abused as their donations allow Pawmetto Lifeline to grant miracles to pets like Pretty Girl.

Pawmetto Lifeline has proudly maintained our American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accreditation again for 2021. We are among an elite group in the top 12% of veterinary hospitals in the nation and only one of three accredited not-for-profit clinics in the Southeast. We are voluntarily evaluated on more than 900 care standards to ensure our patients receive the best quality of care.

WELLNESS CLINIC

Pawmetto Lifeline’s Wellness Clinic has had a busy year despite the veterinarian shortage. While we have had to decrease our hours or cancel appointments on days when a veterinarian is not available, we have continued to provide topnotch care for 2,541 patients, including 101 dogs treated for heartworms, since January 1st, 2021. Our team has provided a variety of services for our patients, including acute illness care, annual exams, heartworm treatment, x-rays, bloodwork, and more!

PRESCRIPTION AUTO-REFILL PROGRAM (PARP)

Pawmetto Lifeline’s Prescription Auto-Refill Program had a busy year in 2021! As the Covid-19 pandemic continues, we have seen a steady rise in demand from pet owners to have their pet’s medications mailed to them instead of picking up from a store or office. Thanks to our amazing partnership with Pets First Choice, a local pets-only pharmacy, we are now mailing medications to more than 3,000 pets each month.

As a member of the Prescription Auto-Refill Program, pet owners can have their pet’s prescription medication, heartworm/flea prevention, supplements, and CARE-A-VAN MOBILE VACCINES more mailed directly to their 2021 certainly was a challenge for home. MANAGED INTAKE “Why can’t you take this pet immediately?”

MANAGED INTAKE SAVES LIVES! Every homeless pet at Pawmetto Lifeline gets life! Why, because we implement a managed intake process. We have a formula that we follow based on the animal-to-staff ratio and our standards of care.

We have an established number of animals that we care for daily and we only bring animals into the building when we adopt animals and the number dips below the established number.

This allows our staff to provide the proper medical care, exercise, training and socialization. It helps us keep the animals in our care healthy -- physically, mentally and emotionally.

No animal gets euthanized at Pawmetto Lifeline due to space because we don’t allow staff to over load the building with animals we can not care for properly. Every dog has its own kennel. Every dog gets a clean bed to sleep on and is exercised 2-3 times a day. The cats are allowed to free roam during the day and to socialize with our staff, volunteers and other cats.

All of this helps us learn more about each animal and it creates a less stressful environment for them to live while they wait for their forever home. If we all want South Carolina to be a NoKill state for companion pets, then we all need to embrace the managed intake process. We are often amazed when people say “I can’t keep a cat/dog. I already have two.” But yet they expect our facility or animal shelter to take their one cat or dog when we are already managing 150-200 animals every day.

Our true goal is pet retention. Rehoming a dog or cat is very stressful for the dog or cat. No matter how nice a facility is

when an animal loses its family, it is stressful and heartbreaking.

We want to help people keep their pet and work through issues so facilities like ours and other shelters are only needed in emergency cases. Surrendering should be the last option.

We need our community to commit to their pets for life and always be willing to work through the medical and behavior issues. We will help you as we have programs that can assist with most all scenarios. Help us save lives by keeping pets with their families or being patient and allowing shelters to implement the ONLY way to have a no kill shelter which is the Managed Intake process.

July, 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021 7,691 dogs and cats entered the two municipal shelters in Richland and Lexington Counties.

1,152 (approximately 15%) of the animals that entered these municipal shelters were euthanized.

When we began in 1999, the euthanasia rate was over 90%. Over 23,000 animals were euthanized!

We have achieved this milestone through programs such as T.N.R., community education, spay/neuter, managed intake and pet retention.

“SPECIAL SEVEN” Pawmetto Lifeline is grateful to be able to promise life to all of our homeless pets.

Most of these seven dogs have been failed by humans and they struggle to trust again. We have a dedicated team of staff members that are committed to working with these “Special Seven” dogs every single day. We know their perfect forever family match is out there so we give all of our animals as long as they need to find the best home. Please consider giving one of these loving dogs a chance!

Keaton what love is! He would do best in a chill home without young children. It’s super easy to win over his trust and heart with treats! Keaton is very affectionate when he gets to know you. He loves to sit in staff members’ laps. We hope to find a family with a little patience and a lot of love to give!

CODY is a stunningly handsome German

Shepherd that we believe is between 3 and 5 years old. He absolutely adores the people he knows and trusts. His favorite things in the world are stuffed toys, treats and going in the water! He loves to stick his whole head in the pools like a snorkeler.

Cody loves going on road trips to Lake Murray for a dip, too! He is a playful boy that enjoys being petted. He can be a little mouthy when he gets excited but our staff has been working on that with him.

BEAU is a 4-year-old Shepherd mix that

was adopted as a puppy and returned several years later. He has issues trusting people. His needs a home with adults who can give him space and time to get to know them at his pace. He absolutely loves to play fetch and it is a great way to make friends with him! The staff has been working diligently with Beau on training and socialization and he is doing amazing!

He has even made some new dog friends lately to keep him company.

is affectionate and goofy! She is quirky and a lovebug once she trusts you. She absolutely adored car rides, Puppuccinos from Starbucks and watching birds from afar. Lucey loves walks on scenic trails.

She is quite comfortable sleeping in her crate. Lucey is most comfortable as the only pet in the home and with no small children. She needs a confident dog owner with experience. She is a fast learner so just give her time, patience and love!

FRANKIE is a 5-year-old Terrier mix that

is a world class snuggler! He might look like a tough guy but he has lots of love to give. Frankie is an all-star leash walker and actually enjoys being in a crate. Frankie had a rough start to life after being shot in the head and understandably developed some trust issues and learning boudaries.

He is ready to start over with you and learn to trust again. He will need a seasoned dog owner without children but does get along with some dogs.

BERNARD is a 4-year-old Terrier mix

that is the sweetest, most playful guy!

He loves going for walks and car rides. He loves other dogs that will romp around a yard with him. He does best with energetic pups. Sometimes he has a hard time sharing his things like toys and food so he would really love an adopter that will continue the training he has been working on at Pawmetto Lifeline. He is very smart and food-motivated so training is a breeze with him! Once he trusts you, you are his snuggle partner for life!

LUCEY is a 5-year-old Shepherd mix that

a hear-o! Spot is completely deaf. He may not be able to hear your voice but his ability to love and learn makes up for it. Spot needs a confident dog owner.

He needs someone that will give him the time and training he needs to feel comfortable in his new home. Spot is very intelligent and eager to learn. He is very treat motivated and already knows four hand signals - “come”, “sit”, “down” and “no”. He is so loving and goofy! Spot would do best in a quiet home with no children.

A Home for Every Animal Being homeless is bad enough but being homeless, abused, paralyzed, and requiring extensive daily care is almost always a death sentence for dogs in municipal shelters. Thankfully, Petunia and Brinkley found their way to Pawmetto Lifeline, a no-kill organization that believes in the value of a second chance. is a gorgeous Sheltie/Pomeranian mix found abandoned in an apartment. Animal B RINKLEY Control was called to remove him from the property and then transferred from a municipal

shelter to Pawmetto Lifeline, where he lived for five years.

The touch of a hand was more than Brinkley could bare and he would react as if he was on the verge of being tortured. He is blind in one eye and visually impaired in another eye. A veterinary neurologist believes he most likely suffered severe head trauma. Putting Brinkley in a busy, high stress kennel surrounded by other dogs and strangers was debilitating. A veterinarian, who is also an animal behaviorist, instructed the Pawmetto Lifeline leadership team to find a quiet place at Pawmetto Lifeline where he could live with limited contact with people so he could build a trusting relationship with humans. During his five years at Pawmetto Lifeline, he developed relationships with 4-5 employees that he trusted as much as he could trust. He could touch you, even on occasion (but rare) he would give you a quick kiss, lay in your lap, and act as if he was in heaven. So we knew if someone could respect those boundaries, Brinkley could be adopted.

Most people could not accept a touchless relationship with Brinkley. It was more about what they needed and not what Brinkley needed. Brinkley learned how to be leashed up with a special leash. He loves to go on walks, chase his toys, and just hang out.

After five years, Brinkley was adopted on December 6, 2020. He is the only dog in a home where his parents have said he can be who he is even if he never learns to love the touch of a hand, he can continue to live in a quiet home, walk, run and play freely with his new mom and dad, John and Tayler in North Carolina.

ETUNIA was found on the side of the road paralyzed. Her ears had been chopped off as well as her tail. She was found on December 31st, 2019 and brought to Pawmetto Lifeline by a private citizen that found her. Petunia was adopted and returned twice. She is extremely reactive to other dogs and both families had dogs and did not feel they could manage to keep their dogs and Petunia separate for life. While Petunia is reactive with other dogs, she is obsessed with humans and loves to be with her people constantly. Simply touching her human friends gives her comfort and joy. Living at Pawmetto Lifeline was extremely stressful for Petunia, with over 150 animals, lots of volunteers and guests visiting, Petunia was very DISTRESSED. She constantly had stress diarrhea which created issues with personal hygiene and bacterial infections.

Petunia became a “celebrity” on TikTok with followers all over the country.

Many wanted to adopt and others wanted to send her gifts.

On December 11th, a young wonderful couple who recently lost their beloved dog to mouth cancer and had been following Petunia on TikTok made the decision that they needed, and wanted, to give Petunia a forever home. Petunia is in love with her new mom and dad. She is the only dog in a world where a disability makes her special, NOT unadoptable.

Pawmetto Lifeline hopes that organizations around the country will change their mindset about dogs with trust issues and give them a chance to be rehabilitated by developing trusting relationships with humans. In a world where shelters are not truly implementing “managed intake programs” that prevent shelters from euthanizing due to space or time or manageable medical issues, both Brinkley and Petunia would have been euthanized.

We are honored that both, Brinkley and Petunia, came to Pawmetto Lifeline and we were able to protect, advocate and place them with families that respect all life, even those that have issues from abuse, neglect, and disabilities.

We were blessed to participate in several adoption events again in 2021, including Kitten-Palooza where 185 kittens found their homes and Subaru’s Share the Love event where 36 dogs found their forever home! FROM CHAINED T0 CHERISHED Monica, Michael, Maria, Monty, Morgan, Melvin, Marcus, Marsha, and Martha had spent most of their eight months of life tied in a front yard with very little human interaction or affection. A good Samaritan alerted Pawmetto Lifeline of their horrible living situation and we knew we had to intervene and save these pups.

The nine dogs were rescued and brought to Pawmetto Lifeline for medical care and to find their forever homes.

They were all so wonderful and sweet. Each one was diagnosed with a fungal infection and spent several weeks receiving treatment.

After they were fully healed, several of the pups were adopted in forever homes with local families! The others were transported to one of our rescue partners in the Northeast U.S. where they were adopted immediately.

Unfortunately, these types of situations happen every day across our state. We are so blessed to be able to offer assistance thanks to our dedicated staff, volunteers and generous donors.

These dogs will now be able to live out a wonderful life in a home where they are loved and adored!

COMMUNITY CAT PROGRAM

“IT’S HIP TO BE TIPPED!” As we begin a new year and reflect on 2021, the Community Cat Program is thankful! Our community continues to show their support of TNR (Trap-NeuterReturn) by actively participating in the Community Cat Program. In 2021, 4,655 community cats were TNR’d at Pawmetto Lifeline Spay and Neuter Clinic of which 2,627 were from Lexington County and 526 from Richland County.

Since the induction of the Community Cat Ordinance in October 2017, Pawmetto Lifeline’s Spay and Neuter Clinic has performed 16,540 surgeries on Community Cats. This incredible feat is driven by a core group of volunteer trappers and Pawmetto Lifeline’s Spay and Neuter clinic medical team. Every cat that is TNR’d at Pawmetto Lifeline is spayed or neutered, given Rabies and FVRCP vaccines, and ear tipped.

Providing this life-saving medical care stops more unwanted litters from being born and addresses many of the concerns of the community.

TRAPPING TIPS AND SPAY/NEUTER INFORMATION

1. Establish a feeding schedule by feeding once or twice a day and picking up leftover food after one hour. Cats do not need to snack throughout the day.

2. Place a zip-tied open humane trap in the feeding area and begin feeding the cats in the humane trap.

3. Plan transport to the Spay and Neuter Clinic and set the trap.

4. Once a cat is trapped, cover the cat with an old towel to help them stay calm.

5. Bring to the Spay and Neuter Clinic between 8:10 - 9:30 a.m. Monday - Thursday.

6. While at the clinic, community cats are spayed or neutered, given Rabies and FVRCP vaccines, and ear tipped.

7. Cats are ready for pick up the following morning at 7:30 a.m.

Danny’s Journey

Danny’s journey started as a well-loved community cat in Lexington County. His caretakers made sure to get him medical care and he and his colony mates were TNR’d at Pawmetto Lifeline’s Spay and Neuter Clinic. Danny later went missing and was presumed dead and his family feared the worst. Many months later, the community cat program received a call from a colony caretaker reporting a friendly ear-tipped cat with a leg injury hanging around their stabilized colony. The Caretaker brought the injured cat to Pawmetto Lifeline for medical treatment and it was discovered the cat was Danny. While missing, Danny lost 3lbs and sustained a major injury to his rear leg. Due to his injury, Danny was no longer able to return to his life as an outdoor cat and was surrendered to Pawmetto Lifeline. Adult cats often spend many months or years in the shelter awaiting their forever home. Danny was very lucky and didn’t have to wait long. He found his forever home, with a lovely family that adores him, just weeks after being lost, starving and injured.

Animals bring so much joy to our lives, especially during stressful times. These familiar faces of the Midlands share how their personal pets simply make life better.

Peggy and Henry McMaster Governor McMaster has a long and distinguished history as a public servant to the state of South Carolina. In 2002, he was elected Attorney General, and, in that capacity, he placed a new emphasis on prosecuting cases involving illegal dog fighting. McMaster was elected lieutenant governor in 2014 and was sworn in as governor in January 2017 following then Governor Nikki Haley’s appointment as United States Ambassador to the United Nations. He was elected to a full term as governor in November 2018.

Peggy McMaster shares a story of when she and Henry were dating. She knew Henry was the one for her when he stopped

and took time to rescue an opossum. She feels that it speaks volumes about one’s character when they stop to rescue the life of a helpless animal. The two share their love for all animals.

Peggy serves as an Honorary Board Member for the Board of Trustees of Pawmetto Lifeline. She brings her enthusiasm, energy and networking talents to our cause. We are truly blessed in the state of South Carolina to have a Governor and First Lady who are such strong supporters of animals!

In 2017, the Governor wanted to help veterans who needed assistance caring for their companion pets while the veteran received medical care. Thus, the Boots in Service program was launched to honor Boots, the Governor’s deceased English Bulldog. A partnership was formed with Pawmetto Lifeline, the Mungo Foundation, and the Veterans Administration where companion pets of veterans receive boarding and medical services free of charge so the veteran can focus on getting healthy. We can thank Governor and Mrs. McMaster for this program, the First Couple of SC that cares about the welfare of all living beings including animals.

Sheriff Leon Lott Sheriff Leon Lott came to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department in 1975 as a patrol officer. In 1996, he made a successful run for Sheriff of Richland County and remains in that post to this day.

Dogs have always been a part of his life. Leon says “Dogs are the love of our lives and they become part of our family, no different than a child. You have to love them because of the unconditional love they give back.”

Currently, Richland County has 17 canine officers ranging from therapy dogs to rescue canines, to all-purpose dogs. All are sworn in, have their own badge and when they die are provided a funeral equivalent to any other officers. They also get an unlimited medical care budget. Often times, the human officer spends more time with their canine partner than their own family. When the time comes to retire, they are sold to their handler for $1.

Bernice Scott

Bernice Scott is a lifelong resident of Richland County and District 10 which she represented for 20 years on Richland County Council. She is a longtime community activist, leading a prominent group of black female activists called the “Reckoning Crew.” Bernice has been a strong force in community organizing in South Carolina for more than 35 years. She was the first African American woman on Council to serve as Chair. For the past 30 years, Bernice has also hosted the Lower Richland Senior Citizens Health and Wellness Day which approximately 1,000 senior citizens attend.

Also, they don’t talk back… well, most don’t!” Bernice shares what joy it brings her when she arrives home and is greeted by Midnight at the door jumping up and down with tail wagging. Finally, Bernice wants to stress that dogs can transform people through their interaction and unconditional love. People simply need a pet!

Lindsey Miles Lindsey Miles is currently the Vice President of Operational Excellence at Nephron Pharmaceutical in West Columbia, SC. She is a graduate of University of South Carolina.

She is considered to be Lou Kennedy’s right hand at Nephron Pharmaceuticals.

Lindsey was recently named a 2021 Change Maker by Multiplying Good in South Carolina. She is actively involved with Pawmetto Lifeline.

Lindsey maintains that she comes from a long background of animal lovers and grew up with lots of dogs, and cats, and anything else that needed rescue residing in her home. Her mother currently has five dogs and two cats. Lindsey says “God put us on this earth to care for His creatures and one of the principle purposes of our lives is caring for animals.” Lindsey supports a number of organizations, but supporting Pawmetto Lifeline and caring for animals is nearest to her heart. She currently has two pups; Lula and Bentley. Lindsey also has two young children, Ellie and Bryce, with her husband, Corey.

STRONGER LAWS NEEDED IN S.C. TO PROTECT ANIMALS AND PEOPLE January 20, 2021 - Jayce was killed by a stray, unaltered Pit Bull.

The mission of the South Carolina Animal Legislative Coalition (SCALC) is to advance legislation to effectively prevent animal cruelty in the state of South Carolina. We employ the services of a professional consultant and work together to address legislation that will assist us in reaching our mission.

Our top priority in 2022 is protecting the Pit Bull type breed that is being discriminated against the most and dying at the highest rates in our shelters.

June 13, 2021 - Shamar was killed by a pack of stray, unaltered dogs, three of which were Pit Bulls.

Jayce’s Law/H4094 Highlights: • Encourages Pit Bull type dog owners to spay or neuter their Pit Bulls. (What animal lover would oppose spaying and neutering?)

• Does not force any owner to spay or neuter their dog. If an owner wants to maintain their unaltered dog, they must simply pay a registration fee. The intent is to save Pit Bull type dogs, the most vulnerable animals in our shelters dying at the highest rate of any canine breed in our shelters.

• 1/3 of all dog bites in South Carolina are from Pit Bulls. Studies show that approximately 2/3 of dog bites occur by unaltered dogs.

• While the bill is specific to Pit Bulls, it is in no way a “breed ban” and offers humane, life-saving solutions for these dogs without burdening taxpayers.

• There is an overpopulation issue of Pit Bull type dogs in our state. It is impossible to adopt out all of them. Spaying and neutering is the only humane way to save them.

BOOTS IN SERVICE PROGRAM HELPING OUR UNITED STATES VETERANS AND THEIR PETS SINCE 2016 South Carolina is home to over 420,000 veterans and many have complex medical and emotional needs which can require treatment in a health care facility. Unfortunately, for some veterans with no family, the answer to a health concern is not simple.

More often than not, the health care treatment is declined by the veteran so they can keep their pet. Surrendering a beloved pet to a shelter with the prospect of never seeing them again to receive medical, and sometimes lifesaving, care is unacceptable.

Pawmetto Lifeline has an answer. Case managers and social workers can now refer veterans to the Boots in Service program and once qualified, Pawmetto Lifeline will offer the following services at no-charge while the veteran receives the care they need: boarding, foster homes, basic care, medical services including vaccinations, microchips, and spay/ neuter surgeries. The veteran can then seek their treatment knowing their pet is well-cared for and will be waiting for them when they come home. Pawmetto Lifeline has named this program Boots in Service to honor Governor Henry McMaster for his lifelong commitment to animal welfare. The McMaster’s beloved English bulldog Boots was well known among state staffers and was often seen on the state house grounds attending meetings with the Governor. It was very sad for the McMaster family when Boots passed away from cancer in 2016.

Meet Mr. Bright, a recent recipient of the Boots In Service Program. Mr. Bright, a veteran, reached out to us and was on the verge of losing everything: his wife, children, home and his pets. Thankfully, someone referred him to us to assist with his two dogs, Bear and Dax. Through our Boots in Service program, we were able to give Mr. Bright peace of mind so he could focus on getting healthy. Mr. Bright picked up Dax and Bear and said he could finally have a happy Thanksgiving and a new beginning! A huge thank you to the Mungo Foundation for funding this program.

FOSTERS AND FOSTERING SAVES LIVES!

Foster families are essential to the operation of Pawmetto Lifeline and allow us to greatly increase the number of animals that we can pull from the shelters and intake from the public. In total for 2021, the foster program provided over 1,400 pets with loving foster homes. Our nokill facility is not big enough to accommodate all shelter animals in need and the shelters end up having to euthanize homeless animals.

In many cases, we receive a mom and her litter of pups or kittens and these pets are too young to stay at the facility, as they need extra care that can only be provided in a home. Other foster pets are seniors, and in some cases, hospice animals that need the comfort of a quiet home to live out the remainder of their lives.

Four years ago, we opened the Neonatal Nursery at Pawmetto Lifeline and it has experienced extraordinary success. It has provided care for over 400 animals during this time. The nursery was established to allow pups and kittens under six weeks of age a real chance at life, as they need lots of care and feeding every two hours for weeks. Foster families take these infants into their homes and provide this care. It is very hard for a human to replicate what a mama cat or a mama dog accomplishes but these foster families rise to the occasion. The success of this program has reduced the deaths of these infants by approximately 90%.

Foster homes allow us to save as many lives as possible, beyond the limits of our facility. The transformation of a “broken” animal into a confident and adoptable pet is amazing to witness and is so rewarding. The foster program provides food, supplies, medical care and 24/7 support.

Gratitude doesn’t feel like a strong enough word to describe the way we feel about our volunteers. Volunteers are the backbone of Pawmetto Lifeline and are vital in the operation of our organization. We rely so heavily on our dedicated army of volunteers to achieve our goal of a no-kill Midlands.

Volunteers over 16-years of age can sign up to help in many different areas, including: • Canine & Feline Care • Administration • Adoptions • Medical Transport • Neonatal Nursery • Care-a-Van Data Entry • Special Events • Spay/Neuter Clinic • and More!

Pawmetto Lifeline also offers group volunteering. This can be a great opportunity for teams to help make our building shine with tasks like van washing, building detailing and storage organization.

Pawmetto Lifeline is also a great place to fulfill Community Service hours for a club, group or class.

While 2021 has not been without its challenges, we are so thankful for the dedicated volunteers who come in every day to help in so many different aspects of our organization. ARE YOUR DOG’S TREATS DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD? While tossing them a doggy biscuit may be doing a lot of good for your dog’s “happy meter”, it could be posing serious dangers to their long-term health.

Keep your dog safe by avoiding these seven types of treats: 1. Dog Treats from China - Fanconi Syndrome (FLS), a severe condition that could result in fatal kidney failure, has been linked to jerky pet treats which are mostly sourced from China.

2. Rawhide Bones can cause choking and intestinal blockage.

3. Real Animal Bones can be contaminated with harmful bacteria and can cause choking and intestinal damage.

4. Other Animal Parts can break your dog’s teeth and cause choking and splintering when not processed correctly.

5. Treats with Dangerous Chemicals like Red #40 and Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA or E320), have been linked to canine cancer.

6. Sugary or Artificially Sweetened Treats - Sugar can cause unhealthy weight gain, dental problems and diabetes. Some artificial sweeteners can cause seizures, clotting problems and even death.

7. High Starch Options - Avoid kibble and treats with too much starch and opt for high-quality treats that use complex carbohydrates or are protein-based.

YOUR CHILD IS RIGHT: THEY REALLY DO NEED A DOG

By Jackie Carleen, Founder, The Social Club One of the greatest mutualistic relationships in biology is between the human and canine species. Humans are able to enrich the lives of dogs by providing shelter, food and protection.

In return, our canine companions offer physiological and psychosocial benefits to humans both young and old but what may be most compelling are the benefits dogs offer to children.

Children exhibit immense plasticity and capacity to learn new skills while their brains are still in the development stage. The unconditional acceptance and non-judgemental audience a dog provides is an important aid for children. Whether practicing reading aloud, opening up in a therapy room to describe traumatic events and feelings, or learning new behaviors or skills, a dog’s mere pres-

ence harbors a feeling of stress relief and releases oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine - feel-good hormones in the brain.

The volume of peer reviewed scientific journals regarding the impact of a dog’s presence and interaction with children is astronomical. In addition to hormone induction, other physiological effects include lower heart rate, cortisol levels and blood pressure. Psychosocial and cognitive benefits include a decrease in depression, anxiety, aggression, and attention deficit and an increase in empathy, social integration, school attendance, and stronger bonds with parents and friends.

A study by Anke Prothman, M.D. indicated that children with pervasive developmental disorders including autism and various psychiatric diagnoses exhibited more social extroversion when around a dog.

While there are many positive impacts a dog has on a child’s life, it is paramount that canine body language and proper handling of dogs is taught to children.

Children can be victims to dog bites if they are unaware of stress signals and engage in behaviors that encourage aggression. With proper guidance and education, we can enrich the lives of children and set them up for success through their canine connections.

We love our pets dearly. But sometimes we get frustrated when our dog (or cat) is exhibiting a behavior we simply don’t understand. Leon Panoo, Pawmetto Lifeline’s Canine Enrichment and Training Manager is here to answer your behavioral questions!

QUESTION: What is the best way to crate train a dog?

LEON PANOO: Treats are key. Motivating the dog to go to the back of the crate with treats or high value food items.

Patience is key. Once the dog goes into the crate, working on closing the gate slowly while rewarding them. Once they are comfortable with the door closed, gradually work on walking away in small intervals until you build up to settling in the crate. The crate must be a safe zone.

It should never be a form of punishment.

It is their sanctuary within their home.

QUESTION: How do I stop my dog from jumping on people?

LEON PANOO: If you find your dog is a jumper on people, it is a 2-part action that needs to be addressed. Utilizing the word off from both the handler and the

person being jumped on. The person who is being jumped on should turn sideways or turn around completely to disengage from the behavior. Praise and attention should only be given when the dog is providing the appropriate behavioral response. Patience and repetition are key to success in any training. Dogs do not inherently understand proximity to space and rely on us to ensure they have appropriate manners when greeting new people.

QUESTION: How do I stop my dog from barking inappropriately?

LEON PANOO: Barking can be caused by many reasons, but we mostly see it when they are startled, excited, or over stimulated. The most important way to begin with training to stop barking is to choose a word or phrase that you want to be recognized as the signal to stop

barking. When the barking behavior takes place, give the chosen word or phrase command and then give treats when the barking stops. This behavior is one of the hardest to correct and repetition is key. Rewarding smaller moments of silence will lead to the desired effect.

QUESTION: My dog guards his food and toys. Can I correct this behavior?

LEON PANOO: Resource guarding is a common behavior with dogs. Respecting boundaries and recognizing body language is key to understanding and managing this type of behavior.

Resource guarding is due to a level of insecurity that needs to be addressed. A professional trainer would be ideal to address a dog’s guarding behavior to provide the appropriate training plan for the best possible outcome as each situation is different.

TRICKED YA! TEACH YOUR DOG TO CATCH A FRISBEE

Pawmetto Lifeline’s Animal Care staff members love to teach our dogs new tricks. It’s fun enrichment for both dogs and humans!

Here’s how to teach your own dog to catch that silly flying disc!

1. Introduce your pup to the frisbee. Let them chew on it, hold it, chase it and offer plenty of enthusiastic praise. Reward with treats when they complete a task.

2. Gently toss the frisbee a few feet away. Praise and reward when they retrieve it and bring it to you. Reinforce several times until you feel confident they’ve got the concept.

3. Start throwing the frisbee further distances. Try to keep it close to the ground so they can catch it easily at first.

4. Praise, praise, praise! Make sure to praise and reward each time they catch and return the frisbee to you.

5. Continue reinforcing these steps. Throw the frisbee further and higher every other time you toss it, giving excessive praise when they start jumping to catch it in the air.

You are the Lifeline!

Dear Supporters, As we all know, 2021 was a difficult year for everyone, but we always start the new year off with an optimistic outlook. We are all so ready for COVID to move into the history books and it now seems to be morphing into the category of a manageable disease that will be around for years to come. I am very happy to report that Pawmetto Lifeline never closed its doors or suspended its services during the entire pandemic and served an amazing number of companion pets throughout the year.

In the fundraising arena for the year, we closed out below our goals. We were again prohibited from holding our Bark to the Park event in Saluda Shoals Park and instead held walks in neighborhoods across the Midlands. Also, the Fur Ball Moonlight Gala was conducted as a safe event with fewer guests than normal.

These are our two major fundraising events and they both failed to meet our fundraising goals; consequently, we are short for the year. We look forward to 2022 being an excellent year!

In South Carolina we are experiencing an extreme shortage of veterinarians, and this is having an impact on Pawmetto Lifeline. At our facility we are operating with four fewer vets than normal, and we have been restricted to operating only two of our four Care-A-Vans each weekend due to the vet shortage. The Care-A-Vans are currently only able to see an average of 500 animals per weekend, where we would typically treat 1000 companion pets. Long term, this does not portend good things for our state as the number of Rabies cases, Heartworm + cases, etc. are going to increase as will the suffering of pets. This financially impacts our organization because we are forced to treat fewer pets. We definitely offer affordable vet care, but when treating a greater number of animals, we are able to earn funds to offset our annual cost. These funds generate nearly 40% of our annual income. We have met with our Governor and legislature and are advocating for changes to address this issue utilizing vet techs and tele-medicine so that animals do not needlessly suffer.

Our budget for 2022 is $7,000,000. This is all raised from individuals and companies, both large and small. We do receive some grants, but I want to stress we receive no government funding from Richland and Lexington Counties for our operations.

1-year-old Taylor was hit by a car. She had an exposed bone on her rear leg and a fractured paw.

YOUR DOLLARS SAVE LIVES! In September 2021, Pawmetto Lifeline was contacted by Animal Control about a 9-month-old Terrier mix with severe burns. We knew she needed our help or she would not make it. We brought her in and named her Jenny.

Jenny had severe partial thickness burns along her back and sides with a severe infection. Thanks to the generosity of individuals just like you, Jenny received the life-saving treatment she needed to recover from such a traumatic situation. Jenny has blossomed into a wonderful dog who will make a fantastic furry family member! As of this writing, she is still waiting for a forever home.

Unfortunately, stories like Jenny’s are not out of the ordinary. We are contacted almost daily by someone with an animal in need of care, whether it is from the municipal shelters or a private citizen, and we do our best to provide this care so that no pet dies from a treatable medical illness or injury. There is no way that we could provide the level of care through specialists or emergency services without the support of donors just like you.

REQUIRED MINIMUM 401K/IRA DISTRIBUTIONS

At the end of 2016, a significant change to the tax code impacted individuals 70.5 years and older who have to take a Required Minimum Distribution from their 401K or IRA. THE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE OF ANIMALS CHANGES LIVES Meadowridge Farm in Blythewood, SC is a sprawling, lush 400acre farm and an animal sanctuary owned by Cindy Nord which has been her home for 40 years. Cindy hosted the Netherlands Olympic Equestrian team during the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.

Cindy currently has 11 dogs and 26 horses in residency on the property, but has taken in over 100 animals over the years. Cindy reveals that her love of animals stems from an abusive childhood where she found the only creatures she could trust were a Belgian work horse her family owned and a beloved sister. From these two, she received unconditional love and trust.

Cindy has been a friend and supporter of Pawmetto Lifeline since our inception and has taken on challenging animals for us over the years. On many occasions, we have received a homeless dog at Pawmetto Lifeline that needed specialized medical care. Cindy would always say yes when we called and we knew they would get the best care available. Cindy granted them life by giving these dogs the only chance they had to survive.

Another great example of Cindy’s love for animals, is Bogey.

Pawmetto Lifeline had a friend and animal lover named Ms. Betty Reams, who lived in Rembert, SC and passed away in 2012. She left her entire estate to Pawmetto Lifeline which included a 17-year-old cat, a mountain feist and a 30-year-old donkey. As many of you know Pawmetto Lifeline takes dogs and cats, not donkeys. So, who did we call? Cindy Nord and of course she donkeys said yes. The first time we visited Bogey amongst the beautiful Clydesdale horses and Morgan Horses, you would have thought he was a show horse with his grand attitude. Cindy said his trainer said he was stubborn and had no clue he was not the center of their world. He was a sight to see. Unfortunately, Bogey passed away in 2021 and is buried with a special marker honoring his time at Meadowridge Farms.

Cindy shares that some of the senior dogs may only have 3-4 months of life when they come to her farm, but her objective is to provide them with a good life for their remaining time. Also, we must mention the animal cemetery where every life is remembered. This cemetery holds at least 50 dogs and 50 horses with marble headstones marking each grave in an expansive and shaded part of the farm.

PIT PRIORITY PROGRAM “WHERE EVERY PIT FINDS A HOME!”

50% OF ALL DOGS IN SHELTERS ARE PIT BULLS. 70% OF ALL DOGS EUTHANIZED IN SHELTERS ARE PIT BULLS. Pit bulls are dying at the highest rates in municipal shelters statewide and nationwide. We will never reach a “No-Kill” status in the Midlands unless we can resolve the Pit Bull problem. Spay and neuter your pit bull type dogs!

We created our Pit Priority Program in an effort to solve this problem. If you find a stray pit, you commit to keep them safe at your home and Pawmetto Lifeline will provide medical services and necessary assistance until there is space on our adoption row or a transport to take these animals to a “No-Kill” rescue organization.
