In Loving Memory: Bishop Charles E. Davis

CCharles Edward Davis was born on October 2, 1923, in Leland, Mississippi, to the late Priscilla Hobbs. He was the first born of Schaffner and Marx to devote fulltime efforts to church. Bishop Davis has faithfully served as pastor of this church since that time. His beloved of Theology, Bachelor of Arts; and Bachelor of Arts in Bible. Charles Davis graduated high school in Leland before migrating to Chicago in 1940. Charles Edward Davis spent his formative years in Chicago’s Bronzeville community. At the age of 19, he joined the military, serving in World War II as a sergeant in the U.S. Army with tours of duty in France, Holland and Germany. Returning to Chicago after the war, he was determined to be an entrepreneur and, along with his friend, Brother James McDonald, took up upholstering. It was Brother McDonald and his mother-in-law, Sisivia Davis, served by his side in all his endeavors until she went home to be with the Lord in September, 1998. During those years, he was also a devoted father to son, Larney Bush, Jr. and daughter, Yolanda Davis. As a strong proponent of education, Bishop Davis generously provided for many young people to further their secular education through scholarships named in his honor: The Bishop Charles E. Davis Scholarship. Additionally, he is the founder of “God’s Bible Institute“ for those desirous of furthering their study in God’s Word. On November 28, 2004, Bishop Davis began his life anew when he was united in marriage with Ms. Jessie Bell Kay. Dr. Jessie Davis was a devoted help meet who served as a catalyst of strength and support for her husband’s work for the Lord until she went to be with the Lord in April 2020. They were inseparable… always together. Bishop Davis, affectionately known as “Chief,” was a man of exemplary character who stood firmly for what he believed in.
