How a Few Plants Changed My Balcony in Basirhat (And Why I Wish I Had Started Earlier)

How a Few Plants Changed My Balcony in Basirhat

(And Why I Wish I Had Started Earlier)

A couple of years ago, my balcony was probably like many others in Bengal.

A few empty pots.

A plastic chair nobody used.

Dust collecting in the corners.

And during summer? It felt like an oven.

By noon, the floor became so hot that even standing there for a minute felt uncomfortable.

Then one rainy evening, after one of those sudden monsoon showers we get here, I noticed something.

The small money plant I had almost forgotten about looked happier than ever.

Its leaves were brighter. Fresh. Alive.

That tiny plant started something I never expected.

Today, the same balcony is filled with flowers, herbs, and fruit plants. Nothing fancy. Just a small green space that makes me smile every morning.

If you've been thinking about starting a garden, maybe my experience will help.

Don't Start With Too Many Plants

This was my first mistake.

I bought several plants at once because they all looked beautiful at the nursery.

Within a few weeks, some struggled.

Not because the plants were bad.

Because I didn't understand the soil.

Most beginners focus on the plant. Experienced gardeners focus on what the plant grows in.

These days, my basic potting mix is very simple.

A little garden soil.

Some vermicompost.

A bit of cocopeat.

And enough drainage so water doesn't sit around the roots.

That's it.

Nothing complicated.

The difference was remarkable.

The Best Gardening Advice I Ever Received

An older gardener once told me something while I was complaining about insects attacking my chili plants.

He laughed and said, "The insects found your plants before you learned how to protect them."

He then suggested neem cake.

I started mixing a small amount into the soil every few weeks.

The improvement wasn't magical overnight. Gardening rarely works that way.

But over time, the plants became healthier and pest problems became much easier to manage.

Sometimes traditional methods survive for generations because they actually work.

Plants That Practically Grow Themselves

Whenever someone asks me what they should grow first, I usually suggest plants that enjoy Bengal's weather instead of fighting against it.

Marigolds are wonderful.

Hibiscus rarely disappoints.

Jasmine adds a beautiful fragrance during the evening.

For vegetables, chili plants are surprisingly rewarding.

A small lemon plant can also bring years of enjoyment.

You don't need twenty varieties.

Start with one or two.

Learn what they like.

Then expand.

That's exactly what I did.

Why More People Are Looking for Local Nurseries

Over the last few years, I've noticed many people searching online for a trusted basirhat nursery

Honestly, I understand why.

Local nurseries know what survives here.

They know which plants can handle our summers, which varieties love the monsoon, and what actually grows well on a balcony.

The same thing applies when people search for a nursery near barasat and kolkata.

They're not only looking for plants.

They're looking for guidance.

A healthy plant is important.

Good advice is even more valuable.

My Favorite Part of Gardening

It's not the flowers.

It's not harvesting chilies.

It's not even buying new plants.

It's the morning routine.

Before checking my phone.

Before work.

Before the noise of the day begins.

I step outside with a cup of tea.

The leaves move gently in the breeze.

A butterfly visits a flower.

Sometimes a new bud appears where there was nothing the day before.

Those small moments are difficult to explain unless you've experienced them yourself.

A Garden Doesn't Need to Be Perfect

Social media often shows perfect rooftop gardens with expensive pots and designer setups.

Real gardens aren't like that.

Some leaves turn yellow.

A plant may struggle.

A flower may bloom for only a few days.

That's part of the experience.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is creating a space that feels alive.

A space that helps you slow down for a few minutes each day.
