Eileen David: The City Beckons

Eileen David The City Beckons

Foreword

After vacationing with my parents in Monterey, my parents drove north to hang out with me in San Francisco before returning to a hot and smoggy Pasadena. As usual 280 and 101 were parking lots. I exited the freeway to take surface streets back to North Beach. Our circuitous route took us through the Portola District, then Silver Terrace. Finally, we began our trek over Potrero Hill which was bathed in the last of the early evening light.

As we drove up and down the hills, my parents braced themselves, holding on for dear life. Our parents always have a way of making us feel like we are still in our teens still learning how to drive.

What I want to remember most from that long drive is my mother saying that she felt like we were driving in a painting by that wonderful artist from the gallery, Eileen David. Both my parents especially loved painted cityscapes.

Many years later, the gallery’s directors, Colleen Casey and Greg Flood, asked me if I would like to curate my first show. The first artist I thought of was Eileen David. She had recently visited the gallery and had shown me the beginnings of her painting “Vertical City.” For the next six months, I received updates from Eileen. I made two visits to Eileen David’s studio in Hunters Point with my coworker, Matthew Miller.

When I saw the completed “Vertical City” and the paintings of Potrero Hill, I was immediately taken back to the memories of my parents on that long drive. You could say they were transported by that trek. I too was transported by Eileen’s work, and I hope you will be too.

I want to thank Eileen so much for the opportunity to showcase her beautiful work. I also want to thank Matthew Miller, Greg Flood and Colleen Casey for their support and encouragement.

The City Beckons: Six questions for Eileen David

While I was working with Eileen David to curate her 2026 exhibition, The City Beckons, I came up with a series of questions which helped guide me through selecting her work. I sat down with Eileen David one afternoon to discuss them with her. The following reflects the fruits of our discussion.

Gregory Hemming: How did the main idea develop for your newest show, The City Beckons?

Eileen David: I didn’t have a preconceived idea. It just came about organically. I purchased a bunch of small panels so I could move through ideas and impulses. It was fun to make all of these small paintings after working on larger pieces that demanded considerable time.

GH: With an emphasis on smaller scale cityscapes with a few contrasting larger paintings, what is new in this show and why was it important to you?

ED: I’m not sure there is anything new in this show, except that I largely focused on the streets of Russian Hill and Telegraph Hill. There’s a lot of visual information there so it was a fun challenge to get down what was important in terms of formal elements like color and shape and not get too bogged down by details.

GH: During our previous conversations, you have mentioned the new iPhone helping you with your process. Can you elaborate?

ED: My new phone has an exceptional camera with fantastic zoom capabilities. When I look at what I photographed later on, I’m able to explore everything near and far. I’m kind of fascinated by all of the detail on these buildings and all of those little shapes and shadows . It’s like some weird visual exploration.

GH: Which vista in San Francisco first inspired you to paint cityscapes in the beginning of your career? Do you recall the scale of the painting?

ED: Initially it was the views that reminded me of growing up in New York. The Lefty O’Doul Bridge, under the freeway on Division Street and a lot of the old brick buildings on lower Potrero Hill. I started making small paintings of those areas in the city. They were nostalgic in a way.

GH: How does the size of a painting affect your approach?

ED: With larger paintings I get my patience tested big time. I need to honor that these need a certain amount of time. Time away from them and the to revisit them. It’s a lot of visual problem solving and a lot of changes from what photo reference I’m using. I invent a lot more in a greater departure from my photo. The smaller paintings are like expressing a thought or an idea, quick and immediate.

GH: Teaching painting at Skyline College has been an important part of your life, with many of your students attending your shows at the gallery. How does teaching inform your work?

ED: I love teaching. I love to share what I know, all of the little things I’ve learned in my many years of painting. I’m very hands on in my classes and always solving visual problems. It’s like flexing the same muscles used in painting. It’s such a symbiotic relationship. I also love thinking about new projects and new ways to deliver information.
