Hello and welcome to the Bolton School Family Magazine Centenary edition. 2015 has been a landmark year for the School as we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Bolton School Foundation and look forward to 2016 where we celebrate 500 years of education in Bolton. We have been honoured with a Royal visit and welcomed parents, pupils new and old, grandparents and friends of the school to join us through special events, such

In October we were delighted to welcome delegates from the Consulate General of the People’s

family • Bolton School Republic of China as we had Confucius Classroom status bestowed upon our Junior Boys’ School and to see Old Boy Sir Ian McKellen back with us as he spread Stonewall’s message among current pupils. We were also pleased to see over 1,000 GCSE and A level students from across the borough attend our biennial Careers and Higher Education Fair.

In November, the whole school was very excited to receive a visit from Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, who came to learn more

about our students’ commitment to the Duke of Edinburgh Award and to working in the local community as well as to unveil a plaque marking our anniversary.

GRAND REUNION On Thursday 24th September, old boys and girls, former staff of all vintages and their families and guests came together for four days of Bolton School Centenary Celebrations.

Activities included lectures, assemblies, lunches, outdoor activities, a cocktail hour, which culminated in a spectacular firework display as the finale of the anniversary reunion celebrations.

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, Visits Bolton School Pupils and staff at Bolton School were delighted to welcome Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, in the School’s Foundation’s Centenary Year to learn more about the School’s Duke of Edinburgh and volunteering work.

Despite the rainy weather, His Royal Highness received a warm welcome by pupils from all areas of the School waving Union Jack flags. His Royal Highness was received by the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Mr Warren J Smith and The Clerk to the Lieutenancy, Canon Paul Denby, making time to speak to several children on his way to the Arts Centre. There the Lord Lieutenant introduced Prince Edward to The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, The Mayor of Bolton Councillor Carole Swarbrick, and to the Headmistress of the Girls’ Division, Sue Hincks, the Headmaster of the Boys’ Division,

Philip Britton, and the Chairman of Governors, Michael Griffiths.

Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator Mrs Sarah Waters said: “We have a big Duke of Edinburgh tradition at our school and I was delighted for the pupils that met the Earl of Wessex as they put so much effort into their volunteering, developing skills, undertaking physical activities and this was a great reward for them. I think the enduring appeal of the Award is the wide variety of activities that pupils can become involved in as they develop their independence and teamworking skills.”

Festive Alternatives

Whether you are an all-yearround fan - or think turkey is just for Christmas - the chances are this bountiful bird will be served up in your home this season. We have found some simple ideas to elevate your festive feast from a standard roast to a culinary boast…

ROAST TURKEY FILLET WITH FENLAND CELERY, WALNUT AND SAUSAGE STUFFING This is an elegant recipe that is surprisingly simple to prepare.

British turkey fillets are stuffed with sausage meat, Fenland celery and walnut, before being wrapped with streaky bacon.

Serves: 6-8 Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 60 mins You’ll need 1kg to 1.2kg British turkey fillet Butter, melted 12 to 16 rashers of dry-cure smoked, streaky bacon Salt and pepper to taste For the stuffing: 450g sausage meat 6 shallots, peeled and finely diced 4 sticks Fenland celery, diced 75g walnuts, chopped 100g fresh breadcrumbs 1 tbsp chopped fresh sage leaves 1 free range egg, beaten Salt and pepper to taste

METHOD Preheat oven to 180C/350F/Gas 5.

Butter a large roasting tin.

Cut open the fillet and beat it with a wooden mallet until it is has increased in size by a third – be careful not to make any holes in the meat. Brush some of the melted butter over the turkey and season with salt and pepper.

Mix all the stuffing ingredients together and season with salt and pepper.

Make a long sausage shape with the stuffing mixture and place it in the middle of the turkey fillet, roll the turkey meat around to cover all the stuffing.

Carefully wrap the streaky bacon around the rolled turkey fillet,

tucking the ends underneath.

With a spatula, lift it into the buttered roasting tin. Tuck any stray pieces of bacon underneath if necessary.

Add 6 tablespoons of water and cover with tinfoil before roasting for 40 minutes per kilo plus 20 minutes, so a kilo will take one hour to cook. Remove the foil for the last 15 to 20 minutes of cooking to allow the bacon to crisp up.

Allow to stand, loosely covered in tinfoil, for 10 to 15 minutes before cutting into slices and serving with seasonal vegetables and potatoes.

BLACKCURRANT AND APPLE MINCE PIES Mince pies with a lighter modern twist, all the flavours of Christmas but with less sugar and fat.

Makes: 12 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 12-15 minutes You’ll need: 400g shortcrust or puff pastry, depending on preference 6 tbsp Streamline blackcurrant jam 75g mixed dried fruit 1 medium eating apple, peeled and finely grated 1 egg beaten 0% yoghurt or orange zest to serve

500g shallots, peeled, chop or slice 1 tbsp olive oil 4 tbsps caster sugar Zest and juice of 2 oranges 2 tbsps white wine vinegar

METHOD

Place the shallots in a saucepan with the olive oil, cook over a low heat until softened and beginning to caramelised. Add the sugar, orange juice and zest and the vinegar, continue cooking until the liquid has reduced a little, around 7-10 minutes, allow to cool. Spoon into a sterilised jam jar, cover and store in the fridge.

SHALLOT AND ORANGE MARMALADE

METHOD Pre heat oven 200c/180c fan/ gas 6.

Roll out the pastry and cut 12 x 8cm circles with a fluted cutter and cut out 12 stars with a star cutter. Line a shallow bun tin with the circles.

Mix together the Streamline blackcurrant jam, dried fruit and grated apple. Place spoonfuls into the pastry cases, top with the pastry stars and brush with a little milk or beaten egg.

Bake in the oven for approximately 12 minutes until golden. Serve warm with a spoonful of 0% fat yoghurt and a sprinkling of orange zest. www.streamlinefoods.co.uk

CRANBERRY MERINGUE ROULADE WITH COINTREAU ORANGE CREAM A perfect winter party dessert, this cranberry roulade looks fabulous, festive and fun. Fresh and light, the tartness of the cranberries compliments the sweetness of the meringue beautifully. Plus it’s quick to make and can be frozen, making easy entertaining simple.

Serves: 8 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes You’ll need: For the meringue: 5 eggs whites 275g caster sugar 50g flaked almonds For the filling: 250g fresh cranberries 100g caster sugar Grated zest and juice of half an orange 300ml double cream 3 tbsps Cointreau METHOD Preheat the oven to 200°C / Gas Mark 6.

Line a 35cmx23cm Swiss roll tin with lightly greased baking parchment.

Whisk the egg whites until very stiff, and then gradually add the sugar. Spread the meringue into the prepared tin and sprinkle with the almonds.

Bake in the oven for 10 minutes then reduce the heat to 160°C / Gas Mark 3 and continue to cook for a further 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and turn almond side down on to a sheet of baking parchment, allow to cool.

To make the filling, place the cranberries in a saucepan with the sugar, orange juice and zest and simmer until softened and syrupy.

Then take off the heat and allow to cool.

When ready to assemble whisk the cream and the Cointreau until the mixture stands in soft peaks. Spread the cool cranberry mixture evenly over the roulade then spread the cream over. Roll up from the long end fairly tightly, don’t worry if it cracks a little.

Place on a serving plate and chill before serving. www.berryworld.com

BOLTON SCHOOL THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS An introduction from Charles Winder – Former Boys’ Division Staff, 1964-1999 We are happy to announce the publication of a new history of Bolton School which marks two important anniversaries.

The Best of Both Worlds by Deborah Coleman recalls the origins of the boys’ grammar school five hundred years ago and the amalgamation with the girls’ high school, established in 1877, a hundred years ago. In this way, as an initiative led by William Hesketh, Lord Leverhulme, the Bolton School we know today was formed and endowed. Deborah Coleman, already experienced in writing school histories, had the difficult task of describing two schools with separate identities within a shared foundation. In this she succeeds wonderfully and gives full recognition to their junior

prisoners of war and, on leaving school, took jobs which had normally been done by men. Not simply the history of a school, the book reflects changes in the modern world.

The relations of the two senior schools, divisions as they are called, are a constant theme of this history, even including records of pupils’ wishes that they could meet more freely across the divide.

Over the century the divisions have pursued many common aims and now there are shared activities and events in which all boys and girls can engage. In the first part of the book the writer presents the history as a series of decades and the reader can see how and when developments in building, management, curriculum, community service and outdoor pursuits took place.

She gives prominence to the two world wars: the men whose deaths are commemorated on memorial boards and by poppies planted in the Headmaster’s Lawn, the girls who made clothing, wrote to

The Foundation has grown as Lord Leverhulme wished. The second part of The Best of Both Worlds presents the schools as they are now. An impressive amount of detail is included in coherent, interlocking sections with a wealth of pictorial illustration.

We see before us the range of academic, social, sporting and outdoor activity at senior, junior and and infant levels. There are evocative photographs of cricket and football matches, dance and gymnastics, activities at Patterdale, the outdoor pursuits centre, and scenes from expeditions abroad.

Records of drama, original art and music speak of opportunity and achievement. In writing about the School and the Community the author shows how and how successfully these opportunities are made widely available so that links with other local schools are maintained. Strong community concerns are evident in the fostering of family tradition as a feature of the Foundation, where everyone works together to create a society which welcomes newcomers and encourages pupils, teaching and maintenance staff, heads and governors in pursuit

of personal and shared ends. This is the setting which has made possible successful charitable enterprises abroad and there are some fascinating pages describing the School’s strong relations with projects in India and Africa.

Personal experiences drawn from a number of decades are an engaging feature of the text.

The current Heads have written the concluding entries, expressing delight and interest in their roles. Amongst recent achievements, planned over several years, initially planned by their predecessors, is the Riley Centre. Financed by an old pupil, it brings the sixth forms together and links the two divisions. There are some excellent photographs of this twenty-first century

achievement. Not less impressive is a photograph taken in the ‘fifties from Haslam Park to the south, showing Bolton school in the distance with mill chimneys behind and moorland beyond, an industrial setting with an open prospect, which defines both the character and aspiration of the Foundation.

There is much more to see and read in The Best of Both Worlds. It will be an absorbing book to have and refer to.

ON THE UP Football’s wonder kid trains at Burnden Park!

Eight-year-old, Corbyn Murray’s became a local hero and caught the attention of Premier League clubs when he scored a perfect free kick into the top corner at Barcelona’s Nou Camp stadium.

Corbyn, who attends Bolton School, has even been compared to the likes of David Beckham and Lionel Messi. He is currently with Everton and also trains at the former Bolton Wanderers ground - Burden Park. He has a special allowance from the head teacher of the boys’ school, Mrs Faulkner, to attend the Academy.

Manchester United, as well as Liverpool, Blackburn and his hometown club Bury.

And despite concentrating on his schooling, his father says he dreams of one day becoming a professional footballer.

His father, restaurant manager Scot Murray remarked: “He’s doing amazingly well. He’s got so many fans and admirers already.”

Burden Park, where Corbyn trains, has been open since October and is a state of the art 3G-football facility. The Park is available for hire to the general public and grass roots football clubs. Burnden Park runs children’s and adults leagues, tournaments

and is fully committed to supporting all grassroots clubs.

Corrie On Christmas!

SOAPS STARS REVEAL THEIR SEASONAL ANTICS TO FAMILY MAGAZINE Contrary to what a sizeable chunk of the population may think happens on Christmas Day the Rovers Return won’t be packed with the show’s actors and actresses wearing paper hats and supping cheap red wine and half pints of mild. Like us, they will be tucking into turkey at home and spending time with their nearest and dearest.

Family Magazine quizzed Corrie girls Catherine Tyldesley (who plays Eva Price) and Kate Ford (notorious soap baddie Tracy Barlow) on their respective Christmas breaks.

What’s your favourite Christmas board game?

Trivial pursuit, we play it every year.

Turkey, all the way!

Where’s your favourite place to spend Christmas?

Wherever my family are. It is usually at my parents but now I have acquired Tom’s family too - so as long as I’m surrounded by family it doesn’t matter where I am.

Best Christmas tip?

Start shopping early! If I see things throughout the year that I know are perfect for people, I’ll buy them there and then. It’s never too early - it can be anytime if I see the right thing. That way I don’t get stressed out.

Any Christmas disasters?

Yes once I cooked Christmas dinner when I was at university and the turkey didn’t cook through - so I put it in the microwave! It was awful! It tasted like a rubber chicken.

family • Lifestyle Best Christmas memory?

I’ve got so many, I had the best childhood. One of my mum’s traditions is to ring out a wet flannel above our faces whilst we’re still asleep - that’s how she wakes us up on Christmas Day! She screams ‘It’s Christmas’ as she’s doing it - it’s one of our traditions.

Describe your perfect Christmas…

Being surrounded by my dearest friends and family with amazing food and lots of merriment!

What’s your favourite Corrie Christmas memory?

I do love a bit of drama...I think my favourite Christmas memory

for Eva was when she ruined Nick and Leanne’s Christmas wedding. I loved doing that!

Will your character be having a merry Christmas this year?

Well she thinks she’s going to be having a very merry Christmas when she finds an engagement

ring that Robert is hiding. She spends all Christmas day waiting for him to propose but then Tracy’s been visiting Rob in prison behind Robert’s back so maybe it won’t go quite as well as she’d hoped.

Where’s your favourite place to spend Christmas?

At my house in London with my son Otis, then seeing friends with their children. But equally at my parents house in the Lake District.

We have a second Christmas Day there. I don’t suppose it matters where you are but who you’re with.

Best Christmas tip?

Don’t start drinking until the actual food arrives on the table or you’ll be asleep by the main event. Pace yourself on the alcohol front and be careful with the 9am Bucks Fizz!

Any Christmas disasters?

My mum broke her foot one Christmas Day by dropping a pan on it and then proceeded to tell everyone she was ok and hobbled round the kitchen all day. She styled it out until the day after Boxing Day before she gave in and went to A&E. There’s no way a man would do that, you’ve got to hand it to women, they just get on with it where Christmas is concerned!

Best Christmas memory?

I always loved Christmas as a child, my mum and dad made them magical. My favourite memories are probably sneaking downstairs in the middle of the night and trying to work out what the presents were, feeling through the wrapping and being so excited for the morning.

Describe your perfect Christmas Money doesn’t buy the sort of happiness you get at Christmas; it’s to do with spending time with family and friends. So for me maybe an extra week off work to have lots of time to catch up with family and friends, then maybe some snow for Otis, he’s already asking me whether we’re going to have snow on Christmas Day.
