Welcome to Dunscar Home and Ga rden Centre Throughout the past sixty-plus years we have continually developed and expanded our centre. This has been achieved thanks to a very loyal customer base. Some of our customers have been coming for over fifty years and we hope this is a reflection of success in our aim to provide friendly customer service and good quality products at reasonable prices.

We have come a long way since my grandfather, Frank Vickers, established the centre as a market garden in 1948. When my father, Eric, joined the business, they developed the business into a retail nursery. In the early 80s my sister, Helen, and I joined the business. Together we expanded the business and managed the transition to become a modern garden centre.

Now the company is owned by my husband, Shaun, and me, and we have embarked upon a plan to make the site a destination worthy of a day out for anyone seeking high quality products for the home or garden, and increasingly, just a nice spot for coffee, lunch or tea.

Of course, products matter and we strive to offer something either a little unusual for a garden centre, or perhaps, of a higher quality than that of our competitors.

However, this business is about people; our largely loyal customers and our friendly staff. We very much look forward to proving this and welcoming you on your next, or even first, visit to our centre.

Our Depar tments Cook Shop Our Cook Shop was set up in 2009 and is one of the larger departments on site. We stock both the higher quality brands such as Le Creuset, Emile Henry and Stellar, and the more basic gadgets and china from Judge and Maxwell & Williams.

Our product categories include pans, knives, bakeware, preserving, tabletop and barware.

In anticipation of the peak autumn cooking season we always ensure we have some good promotions available.

Inter ior Furn ishings For many years we have been successful in selling a range of solid oak interior furniture. This year we have complemented the range with both mahogany and painted furniture.

We have also introduced a selection of interior furnishings such as cushions, pictures, clocks, mirrors, lamps, quirky doorstops and draught excluders, and a broad choice of decorative accessories to grace the home.

Country Cloth ing To make way for an expansion of our gift area, this department is now smaller than hitherto. Even so, it still boasts several items of top quality branded clothing and footwear, including Aigle, Hunter and Seasalt.

In addition there is a very diverse collection of accessories such as scarves, hats, gloves, handbags, sticks and canes.

Gifts We have just extended this department in readiness for the forthcoming season and as a reflection of growing demand. We pride ourselves in sourcing products that are usually not seen elsewhere in the area, to offer something a little different for that special gift. To accompany the gift we have perhaps the finest selection of greetings cards in the area, nearly 1,800 different designs, and a good choice of gift wrapping materials.

The product ranges include candles, cosmetics, photograph frames, gifts for men, puzzles, children’s toys, christening and new baby gifts, books, stationery, jewellery, collectables, calendars, oil burners, bronzes and china. Of course this is all in addition to the many gift options in our Cook Shop, Country Clothing and Interior Furnishings departments!

Christmas Increasingly garden centres are gaining a reputation for having the best selections of Christmas decorations, lighting and trees. We are no different and work hard to ensure our displays offer something that little bit different.

As well as fine quality artificial Christmas trees, we sell real trees with non-drop needles, natural and artificial wreaths and our famous poinsettias – so good they often last until Easter the following year!

Bird And Pet Care With the increasing urbanisation of the countryside and intensification of farming, much of our wildlife is becoming increasingly dependent on private gardens.

Trees and shrubs not only provide safe perches for roosting and nesting, but also food in the form of insects, berries and seeds.

We stock a wide range of products to encourage wild birds into your garden, such as nesting boxes, bird tables and an extensive array of bird feeders and foods.

This range includes specialist foods to attract particular species of birds such as blue tits, robins and gold finches.

We also cater for the care of domestic animals with a wide selection of leads, treats and toys, for both dogs and cats. Our best selling products from the department, however, are our pet beds.

They offer tremendous value for money.

House Plants and Floristry Indoor plants are not only useful for interior landscaping or decoration, but for promoting health, too. They both absorb carbon dioxide in exchange for fresh oxygen, and also remove potentially harmful toxins from the air (studies and computer printers are notorious for emitting benzene and trichloroethylene). They also release water vapour into the atmosphere, helping to reduce the incidence of dry skin, colds, sore throats and dry coughs.

Most weeks we receive fresh stock of high quality indoor plants from a trusted grower, including a fine selection of orchids and colourful cyclamen. Indoor plants make excellent, long-lasting gifts and we offer a free gift-wrap service. We cater for the amateur flower arranger, too, not just with floristry accessories, but with an extensive range of colourful artificial flowers, complemented by an array of vases and other containers.

Outdoor Plants Like many garden centres, we shrink our plantarea over the autumn months to reduce the maintenance requirement and risk of frost damage. However, in the spring and summer months keen gardeners will quickly spot the quality of our plants and the excellent value we offer. The occasional or novice gardener will appreciate the chance to view our mature show gardens to see for themselves how a plant will turn out.

With a very enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable staff we can also offer advice on selecting the right plants for your garden and caring for them afterwards.

As our Managing Director, Hilary, states, “I am always conscious that even after 30 years in the business I am still learning about gardening and thus it must appear a very daunting subject for the beginner. Accordingly, I am committed to ensuring my staff de-mystify the subject and offer as much advice as possible.”

Garden Care As keen gardeners ourselves we recognise the necessity of catering for the gardener’s every need.

Accordingly you will find that we stock everything from a grease band to a tree stake.

We have also invested our experience to identify the most reputable suppliers for a wide range of plant care products and composts. As part of our continuous expansion we now also stock a huge variety of seeds and a much broader range of gardening tools and irrigation systems.

Outdoor Leisure In the spring and summer the size and range of our Outdoor Leisure department can now rival even the biggest of our competitors. Indeed we are not only listed as a “premier stockist” of Weber barbecues, but we are one of only a few stockists of the Danish Dancook barbecues and Indian Kadai firebowls. In selecting our product ranges we have favoured reputable suppliers offering style and high quality at reasonable prices. The majority of our barbecues and furniture are covered by warranties of at least three years.

Our staff are well trained to offer advice on the best product for your needs, whether it is the advantages of charcoal over gas barbecues or the best low maintenance furniture for your budget. Indeed, one of the directors, Shaun, is a local radio celebrity on the subject of barbecues.

We offer a local delivery service that is often free for larger items and for little or even no charge, our staff are happy to assemble furniture and barbecues too.

Just For Kids Children do not always see the benefits of a visit to the local garden centre so we try to offer them something, too. In the spring and summer months we offer a secure play area suitable for younger children and our café menu caters for children.

Our toy department incorporates a wide range of cuddly animals, books and puzzles.

We also offer a great choice of toys at pocket money prices. Several other departments also cater for children’s interests, including gardening, cooking, baking and children’s fashions.
