Martin was a funeral director for Philip Tomlins in Bengeworth which is now part of the Co-operative group, a large conglomerate of funeral companies. Martin Grinnell funeral services is a member of the national society of Allied and independent funeral directors (S.A.I.F.) whose members are all independent funeral directors and not part of a huge chain of funeral firms. We are proud to be able to give families what they need at a time that is a very difficult time in their lives 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

About Martin

I began in the funeral profession 28 years ago at Phillip Tomlins funeral directors in the Lays in Evesham, until the sale of the business in 2004 to the Co-operative Funeral Care. In November 2017 I bought a new premises, and have continued to serve families in the Evesham area. The funeral service we provide is not part of an International funeral conglomerate or chain.Being an independent funeral director means we can tailor make funerals unique to the individual family. We also offer religious and non-religious funerals, natural woodland burials and a cremate-only service.

a death certificate. If the cause of death is uncertain, it will be reported to the Coroner. It is advisable to contact us without delay. Preliminary arrangements may be made in advance of the registration of the death if required.

Bringing the Deceased into our Care It is normal to await the attendance of a doctor before arranging for the deceased to be collected by the Funeral Director. Remember you are always welcome to visit the Chapel of Rest.

Registering a Death

All deaths need to be registered by the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the district where the death takes place. This should be done by a close relative within five days, unless the Coroner is involved. We can advise you on this. The Registrar will require the Medical Certificate of Death, the deceased’s Medical Card if available, and you will need to make an appointment. • Full name of the deceased, and maiden name if applicable • The deceased’s date and place of birth and death • The deceased’s home address • If married, the date of birth of a surviving spouse

The First Steps

If the death occurs at home the family doctor should be contacted. In many cases, the certificate will need to be collected from the surgery. If the death is in a hospital or residential home, those in charge will contact a doctor, who will normally certify that a death has taken place and issue

• The deceased’s former occupation, where relevant • Name and address of informant • Informant’s qualification for registering The registrar will issue a green certificate which we will need as soon as possible to allow the funeral to take place.

The Coroner

There are a number of reasons why a death may have to be referred to the Coroner, including unnatural or sudden deaths, regardless of how these may appear to have come about. Under such circumstances, different registration procedures will be necessary. In part, this will depend on whether there is to be a burial or a cremation, or if the Coroner has requested an inquest. A sudden death and the Coroner’s intervention can naturally be very distressing, a post-mortem examination may well be required to establish cause of death. You will have many question to ask at this time and we are available to answer these questions and keep you well informed at each step.

Our funeral directors are part of the Evesham community. We provide a compassionate service, combining peerless attention to detail and comprehensive support across the whole process. When you contact us to arrange a funeral on your behalf, these are the decisions that we’ll help you to make.

Funeral Options

Service Options

We are experienced in carrying out the full spectrum of religious and non-denominational services. Humanist or civil celebrants are available to advise and help with non-denominational funerals. We believe times are changing from the traditional funeral and we are happy to accomodate any special requests you may have. We also provide a cremation only when a service is not required. We also have experience in: • Woodland Burials • Horse-drawn Funeral • Motorcycle hearse • Land-rover hearse

Cremated Remains

The cremation procedure is very strictly regulated and great care is taken to ensure that ashes are kept separate from anyone else’s. Dealing with cremated remains is a very important part of the funeral rite, yet can often be overlooked. There are many options available, including scattering in the crematorium gardens, burial in the local churchyard, cemetery or woodland site, burial or scattering in your own garden or special place, keeping the ashes at home or even scattering at sea. We have a range of ashes caskets and memento urns and can also advise on options for memorials, including plaques that can be placed with a tree or shrub.

Making Funerals Special Press Announcements

We can give assistance with the compilation and insertion of death announcements and acknowledgments in local and national newspapers.

Floral Tributes

We can help you with the ordering of floral tributes if you wish and can also record the card messages for you.

Donations

Many people prefer charitable donations in lieu of flowers and we will acknowledge these for you at no additional cost.

Service Sheets

We are able to print personalised orders of service with readings and hymns and the front cover can include an illustration bearing some significance to the deceased or a photograph.

Music

It is becoming more and more popular for families to ask for recorded music to be played at a funeral instead of, or

in addition to, more traditional hymns and organ music. Also instrumental soloists may be requested, especially pipers. Our staff will be able to give advice on all aspects of music for a service or ceremony and make the necessary arrangements.

Woodland Burials

It is sometimes difficult to understand what is meant by the term “Woodland” funerals. For some it may be the use or traditional and sustainable materials in the manufacture of the coffin, for others, it is the idea of a burial in a place that will return to woodland with no headstone to mark the spot. We have a range of biodegradable coffins, including cardboard, bamboo and wicker (willow) options, all of which are suitable; for burial or cremation.

Civil Service Funerals

Organising a funeral can be an upsetting time, so choosing the right sort of ceremony for your loved one is essential for making sure the day is as celebratory as possible. If you’re looking for funeral directors in Evesham, at Martin Grinnell, we offer a range of funeral services and will work with you to provide a ceremony that will truly celebrate the life of your friend or family member. If your loved one has lived their life without religion, a religious funeral will not feel right and won’t be the best way to reflect on their life. Our humanist funeral services ensure that the ceremony reflects the wishes of the family, is individual and will celebrate the deceased in a way they would want to be remembered.

What is a Humanist Funeral Service?

A humanist funeral service arranged by Evesham funeral directors, Martin Grinnell, will respect the life of the

deceased and work to create a ceremony that reflects the personality of your loved one. If the deceased was not a religious person, our humanist funeral services do not mention religion and will usually be led by a celebrant who will introduce the readers, music and guide the ceremony. Your loved one does not necessarily need to have been a humanist to have a humanist funeral, it just means that the religious element of the service will be left and there will be more focus on the life and personality of your loved one.

What Happens in a Humanist Funeral Service?

Our humanist funeral directors in Evesham will work with friends and family to organise a service that is personal and special to the individual loved one, but typically, this is the running order of a humanist/civil service funeral. 1. T he chosen music will start to play as the service begins 2. T he celebrant will offer words of welcome, and will open with a reflection on life and death without the religious perspective 3. A tribute will be read by either the celebrant or a family member that will talk about the life and character of the person who has died 4. M ore readings are given by family and friends 5. T he celebrant will call for a moment of silence for reflection 6. T he coffin will be taken from view 7. T he celebrant will share some closing thoughts, and thanks guests for attending 8. M ore music chosen by the family/friends will play as guests leave
