COTTAGE CLUSTER TINY HOMES FOR VETERANS

Location: Cottage Grove, Oregon Timestamp: Fall, 2019

DESCRIPTION In a quaint historic neighborhood our studio group was challenged to design the 60’ x 115’ parcel simply and efficiently. Daylighting, privacy, and proximities were important. We aimed to provide each unit a sense of ownership. The porches are semiprivate pockets in the site that are tied together with a central green.

KEY PLAYERS • Studio of 15 Students (group project) • Homes for Good (local low-income housing agency) • Oregon BILDS (program that gives students hands on experience in design and construction) THE TASK • Four affordable tiny homes (400 sf or less) for low-income veterans

The floor plan was designed to easily change orientation. We had to make use of every inch to get the most out of these small units (384 sf).

Affordable materials such as plywood, and simple stick framing with roof trusses kept costs low. With a strict schedule, the project team went through a rigorous design process and submitted construction documents in 10 weeks.

TIMBER VILLAGE

BUILDING A COMMUNITY THROUGH PARTICIPATORY ARCHITECTURE Location: Eugene, Oregon Timestamp: Fall, 2020 DESCRIPTION Ponderosa Pine is an underutilized forest resource in Oregon. Roundwood thinnings are often left on forest floors. Our goal was to devise a modular structural system that can make use of “green” roundwood. Custom multi-directional connections became a crucial aspect of our kit of parts. A driving concept was a primary structure which allows for simple, tenant-built units. We are fostering the idea of participatory architecture, wherein a community of individuals come together and build their collective future. While developing a parametric structure and phased approach, we envisioned a system that can be aggregated, and adjusted to fit site and circumstances.

PARCADE FLATS RETROFITTING A GARAGE TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING Location: Eugene, Oregon Timestamp: Summer, 2019

Parking lots and brutalist garages tend to subtract urban quality.

As transportation evolves, cities may consider repurposing valuable parking garage real estate. In this adaptive reuse project, a parking garage activates a downtown block with three levels of affordable housing over a mixed use ground level.

As the need for housing outweighs need for parking, a multi-phase approach allows the structure to transform over many years.

DEXTER ROWING CENTER A NEW ERA FOR LOWELL STATE PARK & UNIVERSITY OF OREGON ROWING

Location: Lowell, Oregon Timestamp: Spring, 2019

Dexter Reservoir is among the best locations for rowing in the Pacific Northwest. The site must function as a welcoming venue for the annual Covered Bridge Regatta which lures rowing teams, and hundreds of people to Lowell State Park every spring. A new 20,000 sf shellhouse will empower growth for the UO Rowing Team.

It must serve a community function working for local clubs and gatherings. On a larger scale, we were tasked with master planning the park to be more environmentally responsible.

Stormwater management was critical as Dexter Reservoir is a pinch point for water entering the Mid-Willamette Valley. A bioswale was added to intercept runoff from the existing parking lot.

EUGENE TOWN SQUARE CITY HALL & FARMER’S MARKET PAVILIONS Location: Eugene, Oregon Timestamp: Spring, 2020

Eugene Town Square aims to provide a unifying City Hall building and improve the Lane County Farmer’s Market. Two market structures are designed to both shelter during rainy season and open up for nice weather. They have been placed to maintain the meandering market spaces beneath the park trees, which Eugenians have come to know and love.

The new plaza acts as the welcome mat to city hall and a flexible space for community use. The plaza will allow the Lane County Farmer’s Market to expand with more formal space.

The council chamber is the jewel of city hall.

It is the sacred room where policy is voted into action. Expressed in locally sourced doug-fir siding on the second level, the space overlooks the plaza and into the old park trees.
