JAH 9 REVIVES CHANNEL ONE CLASSIC TRACK

G Select PR, Kingston - With her latest single “Steamers a Bubble”, rising roots-reggae singer Jah9 (Janine Cunningham) has added lyrical fire to the Apartment riddim, a Channel One classic- originally recorded in 1982. The instrumental featured the original Roots Radics band with Lincoln ‘Style Rotterdam’ Scott on drums, Errol ‘Flabba’ Holt on bass, Eric ‘Bingy Bunny’ Lamont on guitar and Wycliffe ‘Steelie’ Johnson (of Steelie and Cleevie) on keyboards. The song’s producer Franklyn ‘Ben-Up’ Irving (Shamala/Hit Bound Records) served as percussionist and chief curator of sorts as the instrumental went unreleased for almost 30 years till its 2010 reincarnation as the Inna De Yard Riddim on the song of same name. That single was recorded by Deraja featuring Paquito via the Maka Fresh label. In explaining the long gap between the track’s creation and re-launch, Franklyn says that his reluctance to release it was influenced by prior disappointments in the industry. “In 1982, my first production, “Robbery” by O’Neal Dyer, was released in the UK under the ChaCha label. I never heard from ChaCha about anything regarding the song and that threw me off so I left music to

Jah9’s vocals were recorded by Rory Gilligan of Stone Love and mixed in the UK by Mark Gamble, who also created the dubstep version. With its exclusive vinyl release, ‘Steamers’ will introduce the classic sounds to a new generation of reggae lovers. Still, ardent roots reggae fans will welcome the pairing of the Roots Radics’s easy rockers flow with that of Jah9’s jazz on dub sensibilities. Inspired by visits to Chinna’s St. Andrew Park home which is as legendary as the gifted guitar Melchizedek himself, the song paints a picture of a typical visit to Inna De Yard. Jah9, who released her debut album New Name in May, will be promoting the song as she makes her way across Europe in the coming months. Steamers a Bubble will also be featured on Channel One’s upcoming special commemorative release celebrating some forty years in the business. Founded in 1973 by the legendary Hoo Kim brothers, the Maxfield Avenue based studio was the starting point for many greats like Sly and Robbie. In its formative years Channel One recorded some of the biggest tracks in reggae history, churning out hits from The Mighty Diamonds (“I Need a Roof”) and Delroy Wilson (“It’s a Shame”) among others. This studio is largely considered one of Jamaica’s most successful, for its longevity as well as the solid string of hits that it spawned between 1983 and 1993 alone. he music industry is a convoluted place at best. The system was always about exploiting talent and making huge profits for greedy record label owners and executives. The “star making” regimes bringing us The Temptations, Smokey, Elvis, Janis Joplin, James Brown, The Rolling Stones, Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Bieber, Britney and so on was only the means to an end. These “stars” sell product to us, gullible as well as music loving consumers. Record label owners do not reside within the reggae community. They may use us from time to time but there are no powerful record labels within the reggae genre (VP and Green Sleeves were s m a l l to moderate labels). Seems a bit of an oxymoron of sorts that the most popular / played music has no infrastructure??? Did reggae shoot itself in the foot? Did we make the music really accessible to the masses in order to beat the ‘block’ put on by labels never playing reggae on mainstream radio so the ‘riddim culture’ of several artists singing on one ‘riddim’, mixed tapes / CDs, free internet radio and other

People still clamor to concerts for certain artists yet for the vast majority, the reggae game is a ‘hustle’. From my experience in Canada, it finally dawned on me what we did or did not do with reggae music. All those years performing at The Bamboo on Queen and opening up for international acts at Lee’s Palace, The El Mocambo or the Copa or The Masonic Temple or The Opera House was our hanging on to a piece of the ‘reggae train’ that was a worldwide scene. We feasted on the ‘reggae train’! We never created a fan base of our own! Artists performing in Canada have a very limited fan base as evidenced by the audiences that go to most shows. It is not for me to decide or to judge whether they are any good or not! Just pointing out the obvious. There are the bright lights of the folks who run Redemption, or the Irie Festival and Jambana yet for most of the ‘artists’ there is limited to zero success where most are concerned. In conversation with some of the artists, they point to promoters for events who expect them to perform for free or for little payment. Some of these artists know exactly how much the headliner is earning yet the promoter won’t pay them? As artists, they rehearse just as hard, take the same amount of time to write original tunes and are every bit as good as some of the headliners. “Why are you paying us less or

Shouldn’t talent be properly valued as well as compensated?” In conversation with the promoters, some shy away from some of the artists performing in Canada who insist on “guaranteed payment”! Are artists guaranteed payment just because they rehearse? “Guaranteed payment!?!?” Why? To a promoter, the headliner/s brings in the audience in the first place. With or without the local acts folks go because of the headliners. That is a fact of life! So promoters feel like they are doing the local acts a favor by including them on the bill in the first place. Another major pet peeve of the promoter is artists who show up with an entourage 10 deep or a 40 person guest list yet still expects payment at the end of the night. Really? Local acts get all excited to perform and to entertain these audiences then they book their own shows, maybe five or ten people show up and promoters are aware of these fails by local acts. This “fail” is on the shoulders of everyone! All of us! We have not inspired reggae consumers to choose our “Canadian” product. We have not inspired the next generation of reggae performers! How come we haven’t found a venue of our own created an environment for the fan base to come out and to support the genre? All the bands and artists come by and jam week after week and encourage fans from all walks

They would argue about the ticket price at a Beres show? I’m sure that they wouldn’t! We have devalued ourselves! Our audiences will go where it is cheap and easy as there is always a spot for it. We will undercut each other every chance that we get. Promoters will offer xamount to artist “A” then offer less to artist “B” who will accept it, then promoter will cancel artist “A”. Fan “A” will go to another event on Sunday or Tuesday or Wednesday in order to not pay $5.00 at the door on Monday. So promoter or event host ends up canceling their event as the night makes no money. Is this the fault of the fan? I think not! A fan will do anything to be properly entertained. Anything! GOODBYE JAMAICA, THE REGGAE CAPITAL IS NOW FRANCE?

hat am I hearing, Reggae has left Jamaica and now lives in France? Well if you listen to the propaganda that the major record labels are trying to spread, then yes, France now owns reggae. Let’s go back a bit. One of the reasons I created English Pound Radio.com was to have a media outlet I controlled. Somewhere, where I had control over the music I played

and was not subjected to what the general radio stations and record labels wanted to ram down my throat. I predicted that Reggae music would soon be hijacked; just like our native Land, Gold, Bauxite, Oil, Sugar and whatever else they could take from us. They showed us the Bible and while we were busy reading, they sneaked our wealth out of the back door. Well, they have run out of what to steal and pillage, so they are now coming for our prized possession. The thing that has kept us strong, through all the pain and suffering we have endured, they are now coming for our heartbeat… REGGAE MUSIC. Now, I hear some of you saying, “Cha, what foolishness this youth is talking!” Now if you are a little concerned about Reggae’s stability in Jamaica then you will read on, if not then at least I told you so. Ten years ago when I was backstage at a concert in California, I was reasoning

with, Capleton, Yellow Man, Steele Pulse, Gregory Isaacs, Anthony B and so many more prominent Jamaican born artistes. From beginning till end, the show was Jamaicans after Jamaicans gracing the stage. In 2013, if you get maybe three Jamaican born artistes on that list of twenty performers, you’re lucky. Ten years ago, in France, Germany and Italy, closing acts on a Reggae / Dancehall show was Jamaican born. In 2013, the Jamaican acts are opening for European acts, who now close the shows. Are you now seeing what I am seeing or do you want to read more, I know you want more, Ok. On the Billboard Top 40 charts, the “Kings of Reggae” are, Snoop Dog (Lion), Eddy Murphy, Miley Cyrus and Major Lazer? Out of the ones I mentioned, how many have a Jamaican Birth Certificate? All of these are making thousands if not millions from

ED: There have been a lot of musical influences that I have looked up to such as Lauryn Hill because of her melodic voice and the way she captivates an audience. Bob Marley because he has made an impact on the world vocalizing his spiritual connection within Rastafari. His message was revolutionary and inspiring to the world, reshaping reggae music. Garnett Silk has also been a musical influence to I because of his soul, passion and lyrical consciousness. However, when it comes to musical influences like Marcia Griffith, Burning Spears, Etta James and The Abyssinians I can go on and on because I have learned to love and appreciate all different genres.

Over the course of time I have worn many hats singing, deejaying, selecting, song writing and singing background vocals for various artists until I started putting out my own material. ReggeX: Wow, that’s a lot of hats sis, so when was your first song released, what was the name of it and who wrote and produced it? ED: The first song I put out was Natty Haffi Grow and it was released in 2008, it was written by Wayne Culture aka Kulcha Ites and I and it was produced by Bernie

ReggeX: And that’s a good thing when you are in the business, to appreciate all genres, you learn a lot from that. So what plans do you have for the future musically? ED: Currently I am in the studio recording an album which is scheduled to be released in fall 2013. It will feature songs such as Natty Haffi Grow, Jah Live’s, Mi Nuh Like, Mama Africa, Let Me Know ft Fire Lion, Sensimellia and Stop The Violence just to name a few. With this album I plan to take it to an international level and give my listeners a new fresh sound. ReggeX: Who have you collaborated with? And who are some of the producers and artists that you will collaborate with in the future? ED: Over the years I have had the opportunity to collaborate with artists such as Noel Ellis and Roger B but recently I have recorded a new song with Fire Lion titled Let Me Know, which is a Smokeshop production that will be released on my upcoming album. I am a strong believer in female artists uniting as one so I hope to collaborate with artists such as Chatta, Queen Ifrica, Donna Makeda and Tasha T in the near future. You can anticipate collaborations with producers such as Smokeshop Productions, Ras Bagle the dub scientist, Fire Productions from Jamaica, Abstract Productions & InI Productions.

ReggeX: Sounds like a good plan and lots of good music to come. Tell us what your thoughts are on the reggae music industry in Canada and worldwide and what you think can be done to make it better? ED: I feel that there can be potential growth in the reggae music industry in Canada and worldwide, by members of the community supporting local artists, giving them an opportunity to advance in their career, so they can be recognized on a global scale. ReggeX: This is for your fans Empress, tell us something about Empress Divine that we don’t already know. ED: I attended George Brown College and studied as a personal support worker. Currently I work with disabled Canadians that have mental and physical disabilities assisting them to receive a Disability tax credit from Revenue Canada. I also attended a Disc Jockey school called Scratch Lab and received a certificate where I perfected the art of mixing and blending music. I have a love for fashion and design and hope to have my own clothing line in the near future. ReggeX: Those are some good achievements and great goals for the future, I respect that sis. So please give some words of advice to upcoming reggae artists ED: I would strongly advise any upcoming artist to strive to succeed and focus on accomplishing their goals. There will always be negativity and obstacles in your way but have faith in Jah and you shall rise above it all. Also learn to take constructive criticism for it will help you to develop your craft. ReggeX: We know that you had huge success with your single “Stop the Violence aka Brap Brap” which went #1 on the Rebel Vibez chart for quite some time; tell us your feelings about this. ED: I was absolutely overwhelmed with the response I received from releasing this track. Stop the Violence aka Brap Brap was on the Rebel Vibez countdown for 25 weeks straight and it went # 1 for 8 consecutive weeks until it got vaulted as a hit. It also went #1 on DJ Cool’s radio program on 100.3FM in Kitchener and is currently getting radio play in Europe, Ghana, New York and Canada. On next was Kes the Band, Thief a Whine was a must! KTB was live and direct, soca blared through the speakers, the entire crowd rocked, whines, and raved. I stayed chippin’ not being able to contain myself when he sang my favorite songs. Shirt lifted - in the crowd - women went wild. Did I mention that his whine was on time?! As a soca junkie containing myself was a hard task; I had to take a second, meditate and revive into a correct mental state to welcome Mr. Boombastic. As Shaggy delivered a vibrant, crowd intimate set a young woman chaotically gyrated herself enjoying her money’s worth. Mr. Lover Lover never missed a spot! Welcome di king of di dancehall suited in a white look forward to every third week in August! This year was no exception! In fact, many say it was the best Reggaefest yet! The four day event began on August 13th with Rebels Music: When Folk Meets Reggae. A screening of Marley the Movie was shown on the 15th followed by Free Fest Friday on the 16th, the preview show to the main event at Shaw Millennium Park on the 17th! While I did not attend the first two events, they were reportedly well attended and much enjoyed by all who did. I had the pleasure of attending the Friday Free Fest show and I must say it was just about as great as the main event on Saturday! The energy of the crowd coupled with the high caliber of talent made for an exciting and memorable time! Calgary’s top Reggae sound,

tuxedo, no other than Uncle Moses, Beenie Man graced the stage to close MIRF’13 most energetic night. Enjoying his famous timeline set; Uncle Ricky on the drums, Benji on the guitar the place was going crazy, the whole band was frantically hitting each rhythm to the T! Beenie stirred up Montreal’s Old Port like wi did deh a yaad a SumFest a fulljoy wiself, Nuh true? There was no ending to the night as the vibe and love continued to the EB Lounge after party hosted by Diva Nikki Z. Could we rejuvenate ourselves the next morning? Of course, an Empress can never be weary. Fans of Reggae Veteran, Yellowman were out in full effect during his entire set. Its Its Its Serani came decked out in a silver metallic suit, stripping during his set, driving women of the crowd crazy. Then came the princess of reggae herself, Alaine, like the beautiful song bird she is she threw off those gorgeous Original RnR were on hand spinning only the best of conscious Reggae tracks before and between the stage show sets. The line up on stage was very impressive with the likes of Toronto’s House of David Gang, Calgary’s J.K & The Relays and Mellow Man out of Winnipeg. The headliner, Lukie D, one of Jamaica’s best Reggae artistes in his own right and member of Reggae super group L.U.S.T, delivered one of the best performances in Reggaefest’s history! The main event on Saturday August 17th kicked off with Calgary’s own Dj Cry and Simple Supreme followed by an extraordinary line up of artistes including not one, not two, but three headlining acts! Some highlights of the day included Vancouver’s Elaine Lil Bit Shepherd, Toronto’s Ammoye and Steele, as well

royal blue heels and took Old Port to another level of performance. Coco Tea came right behind with some wicked tunes, sending everyone back a decade or two. Closing the festival was none other than the God father of reggae Freddie McGregor, Big ship sailing on the ocean. Rock steady & ska pon Old Port, this performance was the very thing that was missing throughout the weekend after all it is a Reggae Festival isn’t it? I BRILLIANCE I Brilliance is a multi talented Jamaican Canadian Artist. He started his career as a DJ spinning Reggae, Funk, Hip Hop and Pop recordings. Even as a pre-teen, I Brilliance showed great skill in selecting old school Roots Reggae and Hip Hop records to rock parties and social functions. During the late 1990’s, he used his knowledge and experience in music to launch a career as a DJ as Reggae MC’s are called. That transformation coincided with a visit to Jamaica where he lived for a couple of years with the intention of observing, learning and participating in the vibrant Dancehall Reggae industry there. As a Recording Artist, I Brilliance has a distinctive sound. It is different from the Jamaican style and is not typical of Canadian Reggae. He has achieved this unique approach by bringing together his experience with Hip Hop, R&B, Jazz and Roots Reggae to make his sound something more than what is expected from the usual dancehall recordings. His vocal style distinguishes itself by combining a fervent melodic singing voice with a gritty DJ growl. As a producer, I Brilliance has provided the creative spark for hot recordings by well known artists. He has crafted exceptional rhythm tracks for

Later, the young Fire Star moved to Portmore where he joined forces with two other artists, Buzhrock and I Wayne. The three worked together on stage shows and became the original Lavaground Warriors. Gaining more popularity and

maturity as an artist, Fire Star released the single Protect the Little Children on the Tsahai (Receive) Rhythm (Altafaan Records) in 2005 where he caught the attention of veteran disc jockeys Elise Kelly and GT Taylor along with several others. Since the initial release of this popular single, he has recorded a multitude of songs.
