REGGAE LANE

I

t is interesting how we are constantly tearing down who and what we are, almost never knowing how or why yet we continue the process, year after year, century after century. Reggae Lane is no different. Some of the Jamaican business owners on the strip are so disgruntled with the perceived negative treatment by the Eglinton BIA which is Italian chaired and run that they are unable or incapable of celebrating something that is an obvious positive for the Jamaican community aka Little Jamaica. The JA run businesses see the BIA as an antagonistic force keeping

them back deliberately and since Councillor Josh Colle has respectful ties to the BIA as well as some of the business owners, a Jamaican / Canadian celebration is thwarted by bad blood. A situation that is so grave that some of the businesses think that the BIA is a part of the Reggae Lane project hence can’t / won’t celebrate this positive initiative.

Pluggy Satchmo, Nana MacLean, Johnny Osbourne, King Culture, Karl Mullings, Bernie Pitters, Lord Tanamo and the hundreds of other reggae contributors over the years share history both in the front on Eglinton Avenue as well as behind, on Reggae Lane. It wasn’t always a “crack” lane or “rat infested”; it had / has pretty amazing history as well.

I am no politician nor am I seeking election for any office ever, yet it dawns on me that if we are celebrating Reggae Lane based on the contributors to reggae Toronto and reggae Canada, most of whom were Jamaican, we may wish a more cohesive plan which is inclusive for all as opposed to having half the businesses on the strip unhappy with Reggae Lane. Much of it is based in the store owners’ dislike as well as distrust for the Eglinton BIA. I am in no way saying that it is the BIA’s fault in all of this, yet for such a positive undertaking one would think that some bridges could / would be built to make this initiative a really positive experience for all involved.

The fact that it isn’t as glamorous now as it was 40 years ago does not take away the rich history of that lane. Jojo Bennett and Fergus Hambleton for instance, had the Sattalites music school down that lane where the band, The Sattalites emerged from as well as others who passed through the school like The Ruffins Band and High Energy band as well as other musicians who performed all over the city and still do. Fergus and Jojo were instrumental in growing parts of the Canadian reggae music scene whose effects are still felt today. The Ruffins also had a rehearsal spot down the lane where IBADAN, the band I managed for a while, rehearsed there also. Hence I do not share in the hate on the lane attitude; rather I have

Jackie Mittoo, Willi Williams, Jojo Bennett, Jay Douglas,

great pride now in our contributions to Canadian reggae history. I feel proud and honored to be a part of it. There are MANY stories down the lane and I am learning a few of them. What seems to be an antagonistic relationship between the owners and the BIA is casting an extremely grave shadow on a thing that should be embraced by all involved. Reggae Lane isn’t the problem yet it is seemingly being made to be. I see an opportunity to turn this frown upside down by facing some of the pertinent issues and hope wiser heads than mine can bridge the gap between the two sides prior to the opening of the lane as well as for future times. www.reggaelane.org

REGGAEXCLUSIVE HEALTH WATCH

SPIRITUALLY MINDED HEALTH By: Trisha Smith, RHN, CH info@aderoherbals.com

T

he mind, body and spirit connection is a phrase we all hear from time to time. The balancing of this trio is supposed to promote sound health, a peaceful mind and a spirit that is fully connected to its source. Balancing the body is easy, there is tons of

information out there and it’s usually the first thing that gets our attention when something has gone wrong in the body. Unfortunately, we do not give the mind and spirit the same attention as the body. So how do we nourish and feed our minds (higher mind vs. lower mind) and spirit-soul as much as we nourish and feed our bodies? Besides meditation and prayer, which are the basics of keeping a sound internal self, I will share with you some other interesting things we can do to increase confidence, create positive karmic choices and promote a stress free life. Americas leading Black Medical Doctor/ Psychiatrist turned Spiritual Healer Dr. Mitchell Gibson, outlines a Great Technique to Start Your Day: upon arising, look at your hands, then go to a mirror and

look at yourself. Say to yourself in a sincere manner “I love you, I love God” at least 6-12 times. Sit down and breathe through your nose and out your mouth for 15 minutes while smiling. This routine if done consistently, will strengthen your aura, improve confidence, tolerance levels and most of all, love for the divine aspect of yourself. Creating a Sacred Space in your Home in the form of an altar, will not only allow for a place of refuge after a long day but will create a direct link, like a telephone line, to Source. Our Ancestors have taught us to always have items on the altar that represent the elements of nature [(a plant (earth), a candle (fire), bowl of water, a feather (air), and precious stones like quartz crystal (mineral)]. You can then add incense, photos and other

sacred items. Altars are a great place to pray, make offerings and teach the children. Altars radiate a positive and protective energy in the home and within the persons using the space. According to the University of Bologna, the Art of Laughter can permanently improve overall mood and relationships, alkalize the body and relieve stress. Try to laugh for at least 15 minutes a day, even when there is nothing to laugh at, just do it. The results are almost immediate. Keep a record of things that make you feel good. As we get older, it is difficult to remember all the “good times” we’ve had. Try to recall all those times your heart sung, you laughed till you were weak, you cried for joy and all other memorable events. (SEE PG 26)

REGGAEXCLUSIVE CHAT Theatre of “The Harlem Black Renaissance” where I played the wife of a black journalist (Titus Walker) who wanted to became a newspaper writer. That’s when I realized I wanted to do music professionally. I started out writing and recording Hip Hop & R&B with songs like “Freak Me”, “Simple Girl” and “What I Got” but then I focused on Reggae music. Why? I’m not sure, I love the beat and the bass in reggae. Always loved the positive vibrations I received when listening to Reggae, so I guess I wanted to create my own positive vibrations to the world.

CHATTING WITH KANDICE K*A*S*H RX: The origin of your name Kandice K*A*S*H and where were you born? KK: I was born on July 18, in the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago. The name Kandice was given to me by my mother. CASH was given to me by my friends. When I got my revelation that the life I was living was not pleasing to the Most High, I changed my name to my purpose KASH - Kalling All Soldiers Home. RX: When did you first start singing and why reggae music? KK: For as long as I can remember I have always been singing. But I think it was when I co-starred in an off Broadway production by Titus Walker’s Ujamaa Black

RX: Name of your first single? Do you write your own songs? KK: My first single is called “They Say”. I write all my lyrics and seldom co-write with others. I consider myself to be a singer first, then a songwriter. I’m always on a mission to create my own sound, my uniqueness. RX: Some of your musical influences. KK: My musical influences are many, to name a few Mary J Blige, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, Lauryn Hill, Tanya Stephens, Lady Saw. Beres Hammond, Luciano, Peter Tosh, Jacob Miller, Garnet Silk, Nas, KRS One, Busy Signal, Vybez Kartel. RX: Artists, producers and studios you worked with? KK: Radford Etteinne (CISUM Sounds), Ras Bagle whom I

met at Nitro Studios. Ras Izaac, Frankie Wilmont, Alan Brizan (a producer I met in Trinidad). Keron Williams (Street Digital), Jah Youth and Jah Family, Romeo Django (Wild Geese Productions), Sam Weller (Slam Studios) Mr. Burns, Blackus Ninja, Smokey, Young Storm, Toniece ToNice and my current producer Clive Pinnock (LiveWorks Productions). My people in New York: CityJah Teff, Ed Robinson (E2 Studios), Purdue, General Pecos (Don One Studios). RX: Long term and short term goals for Kandice? KK: My long term and short term goal is to continue doing music from my heart. I would love to have my own band in the future. RX: Advice for upcoming artists? KK: If you’re doing music for the money do what everyone else did and leave Canada. Go to America or UK and get yourself a record contract. Only then will Canada recognize you. But if you doing it for the love of music, continue doing it and believe in yourself, know that the right ears will hear your message and support you and what you do continually. More importantly practice, practice, practice! Don’t let anyone define you, you define yourself. Always remember action speaks louder than words! So never listen to their words always look at what they do.

RX: Your thoughts on the reggae music scene in Canada KK: There is a scene, not sure I’d call it Reggae, but I’ve realized that there are many talented people in Canada that’s been in the business for ages and they do nothing to mentor or support the new artist. I believe there is a sense of competition and no sense of collaboration or integration. I believe it’s called the Canadian way! No one wants to help you make it. But as soon as you leave and you become a big name outside of Canada then Canada and the Canadians are quick to say, he’s and/or she’s from Canada. RX: Any shout outs or big ups? KK: Big up all the people who still believe in the goodness of others, the people that never let a day go by without saying a prayer. Big up my Mother and Father for the life I have and for the continued love and support they are giving me, sending my love to my husband and my two sons and of course to all my family members in the United States, Trinidad & Tobago and United Kingdom. Big up all my close friends who call me on the phone and continue to give me motivation to continue forward. Nuff raspect to Mi Yardie and Mi Rebel, and to my Fans all over the world especially in countries like Nigeria, Ghana and Germany! Big Up everyone that showed me love and support in my musical journey.

change. It inspires young and the old. I blessed with the gift musical talent and

talent won’t be wasted on pushing out negative vibes. The title of the Album speaks for itself; this album will reveal my writing skills and my singjay style. I took my time to use the players of instruments. A very

special mention goes out to Raffa Dean, my older brother who played drums on seven of the fourteen tracks. His drumming on this album was perfect and his timing was as sharp as ever. You would never know that while playing he was suffering from stomach cancer. Raffa died a year ago on June 9 2014. Special mention and thanks to Desi Ranks, Judy Hussett and Charles Sinclair for believing in my talent. Without their support this album may have never been possible. I’m very humbled to be in presence of these professionals and would like to take the time to big up those that came before me and set the trend in the Canadian Reggae music industry like Prince Everald, Nana McLean, Chester Miller, RZee Jackson, Leroy Sibbles, Jimmy Reid and Noel Ellis”.

BAND / GROUP / SOUND SPOTLIGHT

SMOKE SCREEN

G

reetings Rastafari Sons and Daughters, it’s been a while since I an I share a reasoning, so give thanks for life, and blessed love to all the houses and to the churches. The semantics aside, let us recognize the home, the individuals and temples within. For if we start in the home, and then extend to neighborhoods, cities, and continents, we become global. In these times worldwide communication is the norm. Some embrace the simple and lighthearted side of this technology, while others use it to the disadvantage of others through some form of corruption or mischief. As with all things that mankind has developed, we always have to look at the ulterior motives of the powers that be. For example the newly introduced medical marijuana hype of the past few years has been a very hypocritical and subversive move to corner a marketplace, which average people will not

get to benefit from. As a matter a fact, we are part of the experiment that president Obama spoke about when asked about this topic in Jamaica recently. He stated that in Colorado and Washington, they are gathering intelligence for future expansions. Exploitation is what that spells. When I hear the word experiment, I have an idea who the test subjects are going to be. As a people, Rastafari were the first to advocate the use of herb in this past and present century. Europe and America launched their assault against its cultivation and usage, demonizing all the practitioners as drug abusers and derelicts. I an I became icons in pop culture as proud defender of the legalization movement, without apology. How can we have confidence in governments that include herb in their war on drugs, while in the middle of Europe (Holland) got the endorsement to farm, import, and even have public cafes. They now have the most advanced techniques in the agricultural aspect, as well as the largest seed banks of every strain, some of which have since been eradicated in the country of their origin. Much like when they got a hold of the cocoa from Africa, to develop the world famous Dutch chocolates. Exploiters, “everyting dem see we with, dem whan tek it”. Herb come

from India and Africa, and those people are not going to benefit from the medical marijuana industry.

Now here in Canada, we see a little more expansive view of ganja. They seemed to be more compliant in laws and punishment, after realizing the revenue potential in US dollars coming from the farmers in British Colombia, Alberta, Quebec and Ontario. Who otherwise would have had to be subsidized by Federal and provincial aid, real talk. Small farmers, more than you would believe, would have been up the creek without this cash crop. Canada could put a herb leaf on the flag, it saved the economy from a bailout. So now let’s discuss this thing called hydroponics here in our community, when an individual decides to grow indoors, unless it’s a hobby, it’s usually for as much weight or profit that can be made within the space available. They then look on the market for enhancers, and additives that increase production within a shorter amount of time. Some of these products also include hardeners to produce solid nuggets, and chemical boosters to increase potency. Now I am just scratching the surface when it comes to the tricks of the trade in commercial growing. The main point being that this herb, just like genetically modified foods, have serious side effects. Our

main concern is with the health of the young, especially those under certain ages, which have not yet fully developed into adulthood. Those youths are the most susceptive to these possible side effects. It is our duty as Rastafari to know the types and discourage the youth from using these chemically enhanced herbs that are much more synthetic than organic. If these products were on the open market like the drugs we see on the TV commercials, the warning might go something like this: “if you experience any paranoia, schizophrenia, depression, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, delusional feeling, hallucinations, dizziness, numbness, and or seizures, please stop using immediately and see a physician.” On the other side of the coin, we should differentiate between use and abuse, even when dealing with organic herbs. Yes that’s right! A so we see it, because if too much food or water can have ill affect on the human body, then it would stand to reason that excess of anything can have repercussions. Old time people use to say,” too much of anything nuh good fi nothing.” No judgment a pass still, because we all have our vices, so let’s work on balancing out things. So parents, grandparents, mentors, educators, please open up dialog in the community. (SEE PAGE 26)

REGGAEXCLUSIVE FOUNDATION SOUND POP UP were the sounds that carried the sway in England in those days.

THE LEGENDARY DUKE REID JR INTERNATIONAL

A

braham Mayne aka Duke Reid is the founder and owner of Duke Reid International, a Disc Jockey Entertainment Company which started with the name Duke Mayne Event. While doing Public Broadcasting courses at Goldsmith College in London, England in the summer of 1962, Duke started off with an 1800’ reel tape deck player (Grandig TK 24). Stepping out on the musical road, there were icons like Count Suckle at the Rolling Twenties Club, Sweet Ska Sound Savior Jazz Beat, Count Shelly The Universe, Sir Franso, Duke Lee, Duke Vin and Jimmy Daddy Daddy Young which

Duke Reid and his crew played at the Brixton High dances and lots of Birthday parties, wedding receptions and basement parties. This led Duke to hook up with his cousin Charles Reid at a Christmas party in 1962. During this period, the musical air was filled with such artists as Laurel Aikins, Owen Gray, Derrick Morgan, Teddy Brown,

Denzil Dennis, Winston Grovie, Millie Small, Recco and Palmer Dice. At Duke’s birthday party in 1963, Laurel Aikens told him that he should change his name to Duke Reid, he did not want to but was voted out by Laurel and all the others mentioned above. Mr. Aikens then booked a lot of halls all over London and the

Midland. Duke started out at Sistovor Hall, Balham with Prince Dice at the microphone. They had a Jamaica Independence Dance in 1963 at Big Beth Hall, Bullring found in Birmingham. This is when they started to play all over with the best and only the best. Lots of others came along such as Sir Coxone, Count Neville, David the People’s choice and many others. In 1966, Duke Reid International was crowned Champion of Sounds of the U.K and in 1968 crowned The European Champion of Sounds. Duke came to Canada in 1970 and started with the same name all over again. This was a very hard time because hardly anyone wanted to listen to Reggae music. He kept pushing onward and finally that music became accepted and his sound was back on top. Duke Reid International became popular in Canada and the USA, they produced hits such as “Teacha Teacha”, “Caught in a Trap”, “Heart don’t Leap”, “Love I can Feel” and hope to produce many more in the years to come.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN

C

harlie Chaplin, born Richard Bennett first came to prominence as a member of DJ innovator URoy’s Stur-Gav Hi-Fi in early 80s. Along with fellow Stur-Gav chatter Josey Wales, Chaplin became one of the most popular DJs on the island during his stay with U-Roy, even rivaling the dancehall king of the day, Yellowman. Wales and Chaplin also gained inspiration from U-Roy, continuing the DJ tradition Roy helped launch in the late ‘60s by taking on some of the master’s phasing style and lyrical predilections. Chaplin soon cut his first album for producer and ex-Royals singer Roy Cousins. The two albums that resulted, Red Pond and

Chaplin, like Wales, would continue to cut quality sides throughout the ‘80s. In 1989, he signed with RAS and cut a handful of albums through the mid-’90s. Albums like The Two Sides of Charlie Chaplin, Take Two, and Cry Blood show why Chaplin is still considered one of the top toasters on the island. Chaplin also cut a session for VP Records, 1994’s King of Dancehall, which was collaboration with Josey Wales. Throughout the ‘90s, Chaplin enlisted the services of ragga producer Doctor Dread. And as was the case with much of his ‘80s work, Chaplin’s RAS releases predominantly featured the dancehall-defining band Roots Radics.

t’s the seventies and Reggae is rocking the world and Jamaicans are feasting on a steady diet of music. Head honcho, Coxone Dodd, spits out a new crop of artists and among them is the sensational deejay duo, Papa Michigan and General Smiley. The twosome eagerly accepts their roles as pacesetters of a new and exciting period in dancehall’s history. Michigan and Smiley get out of the blocks quickly as the single, “Rub a Dub Style” hits the local charts in 1978. It is their first commercial success. Consecutive chart toppers follow to make dancehall anthems of “Nice up the Dance” and the monster hit

Chaplin Chant, gave Chaplin’s career a major boost with his first hits, “Mother in Law” and “Diet Rock”. Chaplin’s subsequent recordings with producer George Phang, though, would really put him over the top. His first Phang release, Que Dem, has proven to be one of his most popular and critically acclaimed albums. Now a solo artiste, Papa Michigan continues to write record and perform ground breaking material. The 2004 album, “It’s All Good”, yielded the hugely popular underground single “400 years” and recent releases “Barack Obama”, “Hustler” and “These Streets” has served once again to reinforce his artistic brilliance. Donning the caps of songwriter, producer and performer, his success as a producer for such powerhouses as Luciano, Glen Washington, Tristan Palma, George Nooks and Half Pint, has done little to quell his passion. Performance and recording still beckons. “Love Iz”, his current album has answered that call. Papa Michigan released the CD “Empress by My Side” in March 2011 and “Trod On” was released in 2013. R.I.P CLIVE “KUBBA” PRINGLE By Carrie Mullings

Kafinal called me advising me to check out Clive “Kubba” Pringle’s facebook page on the afternoon of June 5th then he paused for a moment, waiting. I realized he actually wanted me to go and check it, so I did. Choked and barely able to catch my breath I was reading messages that said “RIP Kubba” and “We will miss you Clive”. “No Sah, this can’t be” I thought in my head while tears built up and I started to cry with Kafinal on the phone. We both felt the loss and shared in the memories momentarily before I called Jamaica to speak to Kubba’s sister Mavis and confirm. I remember his daughter Tonya P telling me to “link her Dad” when I went to Jamaica back in 2005 and over the years our friendship flourished to a wonderful working relationship which lead to Rebel Vibez

Clive “Kubba” Pringle born March 4, 1959 left behind a son and 2 daughters on June 5th, 2015, one which he spoke to me constantly about, his star, Juno Nominee Tonya P. Our love and support go out to his immediate and extended family and to all who loved Kubba and shared in the joy of MXIII. I leave you with his signature whenever he had the mic in his hand…..“Mi Seh…Eh, Eh, Eh!” Rest peacefully in paradise my friend.

With a classic dub, reggae sound and catchy lyrics, the song is bound to make its way through the reggae waves. Released on Soundcloud last month, the single has received a substantial amount of support. The single hit iTunes the end of May, distributed by Zojak Worldwide Recordz.
