CHRISTIAN CLERGY AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Part II: The Story of Pastor James Caldwell

BY DR. BILL MILLER

This is the second in a series about special Pastors who were part of the “Black Regiment” in the Revolutionary War. We remember them especially this July on the 244th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence because according to the British army leaders, it was those Pastors in their black robes that caused the greatest army in the World to go down in defeat. It was accomplished by the preaching from their pulpits that motivated Christians to action and by their expertise at recruiting militia and regular army troops for service under General Washington. Some of them were themselves army officers who led their church-folks into battle.

Patriot churches also provided a moral sanction for opposing British authority. It was an assurance to average American Christians that revolution was justified in the sight of God. It has been estimated that up to 45 percent of the population of the thirteen colonies were patriot supporters with 35 percent effectively neutral. Only about 20 percent were loyalists. Without the influence of the Church, support for the Patriot cause would have been

considerably less.

This series focuses on five examples of these great ministers that you may not know about because their involvement in the Revolutionary War is rarely taught anymore. There were hundreds of them and this week we look at James Caldwell who became Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Elizabethtown (now Elizabeth) New Jersey in 1762. He is remembered in history with affection and admiration as “The Rebel

High Priest.”

From the onset of the War, Pastor Caldwell supported the Patriot cause. He served first as an Army Chaplain and then as a commissary for the New Jersey militia. His place in history was secured during the June 1780 Battle of Springfield, New Jersey, which turned out to be the last major battle in the northern colonies.

Leading up to it, British and Hessian forces had invaded from Statin Island, New York, and were attempting to trap General Washington’s depleted army at Morristown, New Jersey. They were met by the NJ Militia including Pastor Caldwell and some regular army troops at Elizabethtown which they lost to the British followed by a battle at Connecticut Farms, New Jersey also lost to the British. During the battle, Pastor Caldwell’s wife Hannah was killed by a gunshot through the window of her house as she was protecting the two youngest of their 10 children.

Hannah’s death became a rallying cry for the Patriots and a few days later the two sides met again, this time in Springtown with the British troops still trying to break through to engage General Washington. As he mourned the death of his wife, Pastor Caldwell again took up his musket and went out with the militia. He fought side-byside with the outnumbered patriots and eventually sealed his place in history as the militia was on the verge of running out of wadding for their muskets.

Muskets must have wadding and only a Pastor could have come up with this solution because Pastor Caldwell ran under fire to the nearby Springfield Presbyterian Church where he took up an armload of hymnals and returned

A LITTLE GOOD NEWS TODAY: Miracle for Bulgarian Woman

BY PETER ADAMS

I WAS PRIVILEGED TO be able to go on a two-week mission trip to Bulgaria the year after communism fell. They were wonderful people who would sit all day long and listen to someone preach. A hunger I’ve never seen here in America.

My Pastor had made the trip to Bulgaria many times while it was still under communism. They would have to try to throw off the Secret Police in cloak and dagger ways by switching cars many times and finally ending up in the woods with maybe 20 people and a flashlight as the Pastor preached. If they were caught, it would mean being thrown in prison and beaten, even death for some.

During my trip, an older woman who held Church in her house sent word asking us to come and preach at her church in Sozopol. It was a 3-hour drive, but we went.

When we arrived, the little lady Pastor named Zafierca came out to greet us. She was very short and staunch. The second I saw her, the Lord began to speak to me about what she would soon go through, and it was bad. It was as though she had a newspaper in front of her and I could easily read it.

Zafierca said she was the Pastor only because there wasn’t a man who would take the position. After the service, she fed us well while telling us her story as we ate. She said her daughter and grand-daughter had recently been killed by the daughter’s husband. He took a lead pipe and beat them both in the head and then threw them in the river.

AFTER HEARING HER STORY, I just couldn’t bring myself to tell her what the Lord had shown me about her. I just couldn’t give her any more bad news. So, after we preached to a packed house with people in the doors, windows, and standing outside trying to hear, then being graciously fed, we began the 3-hour drive back to Sliven to preach at an open-air Amphitheater with a mountain backdrop.

While on the road, I told the Pastor and our interpreter what the Lord showed me about Zafierca. I told them that I just couldn’t tell her the bad news after hearing about her daughter and grand-daughter being brutally murdered. My Pastor said, “You know you should have told her.”

Once we finally arrived back at the Amphitheater in Sliven, we were praying before it was time to preach. All of a sudden I looked up and saw Zafierca, the little lady Pastor from Sozopol, walking towards me with a young girl

to interpret. She stood sternly in front of me and through her interpreter said, “Tell him to tell me what the Lord showed him about me while he was at my home.”

HOW COULD SHE KNOW? I had told no one but the Pastor and our interpreter while driving back to Sliven. I was still wrestling with telling her and I started to cry with compassion for the woman. Then it was like the Holy Spirit grabbed me by the shirt and shook me saying, “Straighten up and tell her what God told you to say.”

I got my composure and began to tell the little preacher woman what was to happen to her:

“The Lord showed me that soon, you will become very sick. You will have to go to the hospital, and they’ll diagnose you with Leukemia, cancer of the blood, but Jesus will be right there with you the entire time. You will lose much of your weight to the point of almost just skin and bones. The hospital doesn’t have hardly any medicine, so they’ll finally send you home to die. When they send you home, then God will heal you sothat all the people in your village can see the miracle happen. You will quickly gain all your weight and strength back right before their eyes. God will then give you the gift of healing and restoration of marriages. People will come from all over Bulgaria to be prayed for.”

Zafierca never showed any emotions at all. She just listened intently, then said through her interpreter, “Tell him it is OK. The Lord showed me exactly the same thing a week ago while I was fasting and praying.” Then she went back to her home in Sozopol.

I DIDN’T GO BACK to Bulgariathe next year, but my Pastor did. When he returned, he told me what had happened to Zafierca. He said a short time after we left Bulgaria, she became very

This is NOT Normal

BY DEANNA WILLMAN

God established government to reward the good and to punish the wicked. Our forefathers established our republic government to protect the people from foreign and domestic terrorists and to protect our God-given rights, such as private property, choosing what we will or will not do for our health, providing for our families, and so much more.

Governing, especially in righteousness, is not an easy position, nor should it ever be taken lightly. Nor should any leader presume to operate outside those established boundaries.

Never in the history of mankind was the government ever established (by God or man) to protect the people from the flu. God did not give us the right to be free from all diseases. Instead, He gave us amazing bodies that fight off disease when treated properly with a healthy diet, exercise, sunshine, and purpose.

He also gave each of us the intellect to use for making the best decisions for one’s health, life, and happiness. To rely upon “experts”, who do not even know us from Adam, to tell us how all of us should act, think, or what to accept is to be foolish, forsaking the very intellect and responsibility that God gave each of us.

The science and history have both shown that for nearly 7000 years mankind has continued to thrive despite viruses, illness, pandemics, and disasters. No one can protect us from all these things, except God. Nor should they try to. To try to do so is to set oneself in the place of God and is guaranteed to fail.

Jesus told us that in this life we would have tribulations. It just comes with the fact that mankind sinned. These things are not going away until Jesus returns. God told us that the number of days each of us will live is determined before any of us is born. Nothing will take God by surprise or cause your death before you have fulfilled your purpose on this earth. Jesus also told us that none of us can lengthen our life by even one hour with our human worrying and efforts. When it is our time to go, we will die. We can determine the quality of our lives, but God determines the length of our lives.

We, the people, have the God-given right to decide which medical procedures we will accept for ourselves and our families. We also have a responsibility to speak up against those who try to force their agendas on us, even in the guise of the public good. Mask wearing and social distancing were instructions given by God to be followed only when one had leprosy. No where did the Creator of all the universe (man and viruses included) instruct people to shut down businesses, stop the economy, and quit living a normal life for any situation.

These extreme actions do not prevent the spread of other diseases, nor benefit the vast majority of the world population. These medical procedures, these responses to a flu virus, are not normal nor should they even be tolerated. We must make our voices heard not only for ourselves but for our children.

What one generation tolerates the next will accept as normal. This is NOT normal.

again under fire so his compatriots could use the pages as wadding. They were then able to repulse the English attack which saved General Washington’s Continental Army to fight another day.

Pastor Caldwell is widely regarded as one of the heroes of the battle and the town of Caldwell, New Jersey was named in his honor. Had he not thought of the novel hymnal wadding idea, the entire Revolutionary War would likely have gone to the English stamping out the fledgling root of American exceptionalism.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 33 Like the fish, it is often hard for us to avoid the “bait” that is put before us “and leads us into temptation.” Bait that is of the evil one, not God. For some it is tobacco, for others drugs, for many it is materialism, while others “bite” on alcohol, pornography, gambling, the internet, unhealthy sex, superiority, or excess food. The list goes on.

Regardless of the bait, the goal of the original “fisher of men” is always the same... to separate us from others and God... to cause division, destruction, and death. Evil goes after us one by one.

Satan uses a “pole” and Peter uses a net. How interesting that of all the ways we can describe the condition of someone battling with a particular addiction, we say the person is

That same spirit, coupled with the notion of collective guilt, led to mass murder in the Bolshevik Revolution, and it will lead to the same horror in America unless our hearts are changed in a fundamental way.

The human psyche cannot stand the chaos of a materialist philosophy with no objective morality. Western civilization has rejected logos, from which logic arises, to the degree that we don’t have a fixed definition of gender or even “hooked.”

Like that fish, we must be careful not to impulsively satiate a need for immediate gratification, or we run the risk of consuming the deadly agent that lies behind the irresistible bait that appears so self-satisfying. Like that fish, whatever bait we found attractive the first time, is likely to be attractive again and again, even when we “should know better.”

God’s love is the only thing we need in life and it is our greatest defense against being “caught” if we follow the example of Jesus.

When life on earth ends and He squeezes our mouths, how many hooks will He see?

Unconsciously, they crave salvation from chaos and a return of order. Why else would radical feminism choose to align itself with Islam? Weary of chaos, the west is desperate for order, however harsh, and therein lies the great danger of our times.

There is no political solution. Don’t believe any false prophet who tells you otherwise. The only solution is spiritual. Only a healing of the relationship between lost sons and daughters with their Heavenly Father can stop the inferno that’s coming to engulf the west.

“One nation under God with liberty and justice for all” is part of our American pledge of allegiance. This used to be voiced in all of our schools at one time. It no longer is a commonly repeated pledge of loyalty to our national flag. Liberty and justice for all is a noble vision to strive for. Our justice systems do not reflect this promise of justice for all, yet. But we must agree together to defend and pursue this vision, or our nation cannot stand united. There is a Christian song authored by Kirk Franklin and Toby Mac titled, “We all bleed the same”. Other parts of the song’s lyrics voice these truths. ”We are more beautiful when we This doesn’t mean a return to old religious systems. On the contrary, as Bob Dylan said, “Religion is another form of bondage which man invents to get himself to God. But… Christ didn’t preach religion. He preached the Truth, the Way, and the Life. He said He’d come to give life and life more abundantly.” Jesus didn’t preach a system of guilt and repentance. Instead, he preached grace—unmerited favor, not based on works—and a transformation of the desires of the heart through atonement with the Father. To the degree you still have a consciousness of sins, you haven’t embraced the come together. Let’s fight for one another (not with or against one another)”. Our national creed summarizes our deepest need, ‘From many one’.

Across the world we can see nations ruled by dictators and bullets. In just a few weeks, we will be deciding if we want to be ruled by ballots or bullets. This truly is a time of Battle for the American Republic.

Will we see the glory and mercy of God in our upcoming national elections or another civil war?

The west is full of broken children and weak fathers. For the traumatized generation whose vision of God has been twisted, whose parents’ flawed examples distorted the face of the Heavenly Father, look to Jesus.

When you’ve seen Jesus, you’ve seen the Father. Only this can save the west from the coming darkness.
