Campus-wide SPCP’s transition to the new normal by Zofia Beatrice Ysabel P. Lanza With the demands brought by the “new normal,” St. Paul College Pasig (SPCP) made notable efforts to aid the transition to online learning. SPCP launched the Paulinian Flexible Learning Experience (PFLEx) on June 9, 2020 to address the modalities of learning for school year 2020-2021. The institution conducted surveys to address the concerns regarding the new mode of learning. Parents and students were invited to webinars and orientations to ensure that all parties are well-informed. Online learning platforms that were introduced included Zoom, Schoology, Genyo, Microsoft Teams, and other Microsoft productivity tools. Student organizations also took part in creating initiatives such as Pauliworld’s “The Daily Rundown” of online news, SPCP
This year, the plenary speakers were Triciah Terada and Samantha Bagayas from CNN and Rappler, respectively. Terada tackled the state of press freedom in the country and its relevance, and importance in today’s society. On the other hand, Bagayas touched on the essence of campus journalism and encouraged the organization to expand its reportage to further spread ripples of change. For the second half of the workshop, members dispersed for their respective section talks from a representative of either The LaSallian, The Guidon, or Matanglawin. Different breakout activities gave a glimpse of each section’s duties and responsibilities. Pauline Majarucon, Pauliworld’s Editor-in-Chief shares on the success of the event, “Despite encountering problems brought by the limits of technology and slow connection, what you get from listening well to the discussions is very rewarding, and worth the almost 3-hour workshop and assembly.”

Current Events in the Philippines Duterte’s fifth SONA fails to deliver with no mention of detailed COVID-19 response and recovery plan by Laurein Marielle R. Mateo
President Rodrigo Duterte delivered his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 27 as the country’s battle against the coronavirus pandemic continues. Contrary to expectations, the address lacked any mention of a detailed roadmap for fighting COVID-19 and strategies for economic recovery. Duterte’s plans include playing the waiting game for a vaccine. He mentioned his request to Chinese President Xi Jinping to give priority access to the Philippines should they develop a COVID-19 vaccine. He also called on Congress to swiftly pass the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act, which provides the government funds for testing, financial assistance, loans for small businesses, and online learning. Duterte discussed 21 priority measures, but only five are designed as a response to COVID-19, including the Bayanihan 2 Act and a bill that provides incentives to financial institutions to offload non-performing assets affected by the pandemic. He also proposed the creation of a Medical Reserve Corps and a National Disease Prevention and Management Authority to better prepare for future outbreaks. The rest are bills that Duterte has pushed for in the past, such as the death penalty. A large segment of Duterte’s SONA was dedicated to his obsession with oligarchy. After accusing the Lopezes of using the media to target political figures, he slammed Senator Franklin Drilon for allegedly defending ABS-CBN in the franchise renewal issue and for saying that an anti-dynasty system is needed to dismantle oligarchy. He criticizes Drilon again in closing his address of lawyering for the Ayalas in the privatization of water utilities. Duterte pushed for the government to be given priority in using public utilities. He warns telecommunications giants Smart and Globe to improve services by December and threatens to expropriate their businesses should they fail to do so. The pandemic did not deter Filipinos from expressing their dissent. Various groups and organizations joined this year’s protests, themed #SONAgKaisa, held at Commonwealth Avenue, UP Diliman, and other venues nationwide. Other youth groups also brought the fight online with events like the regional State of the Youth Address and Youth SONA Laban sa Tsina that featured talks and discussions on the current state of the nation from the youth’s perspective. DepEd defers opening of classes to October 5 by Angelene Sophia Garcia
The Department of Education (DepEd) announced on August 14 that the opening of classes for the incoming school year would be deferred to October 5, 2020 for both public and private schools. This adjustment was made to ensure that all preparations will be smooth and successful. As of August 19, 2020, there were 84.55% enrollees from the school year 2019-2020, 21.7% coming from public schools and 40.17% from private schools. Due to this adjustment, areas outside the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) are directed to continue their orientations, dry runs, and delivery of learning resources for them to be ready for the opening of online classes, as per Secretary Leonor Briones. In a press conference, Briones explained, “We shall use the deferment to provide relief to the logistical limitations faced by the areas placed under MECQ and to fill in the remaining gaps of the school opening that we are currently addressing.” She also mentioned that DepEd will not stop private schools that have already started online classes. “Ang policy namin, kung nakaumpisa na sila e i-monitor ‘yan ng DepEd. On August 6th, the Philippine government announced that the country’s economy had plunged into recession. A recession is a period of significant economic contraction, recognized by two consecutive quarters of decline reflected by the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
In the first quarter of 2020, the Philippines’ GDP shrank by 0.7%. This marked the first negative growth in
over two decades, the last recorded in the 2nd and 4th quarters of 1998 during Fidel Ramos’ presidency. By the second quarter of 2020, this dropped down sharp to 16.5%.
There is no doubt that the pandemic has played a big role in the economic decline. Recurring lockdowns
and quarantine restrictions have driven several companies out of business, and as of April 2020, the Philippines’ unemployment rate burgeoned up to 17.7%, which equates to approximately 7.3 million people without jobs.

PhilHealth officials allegedly embezzled more than 150B through fraud by Alexandra Ypil
The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), a state-run company, faces controversy as accusations of fraud surface amidst an ongoing health crisis. Thorrson Montes Keith, former PhilHealth anti-fraud legal officer, testified in a Senate hearing on August 4 that PhilHealth officials pocketed 15B since 2013 by allegedly using different fraud schemes such as misallocating funds to favored hospitals and purchasing overpriced equipment. The salary delay prompted Keith to investigate the company of suspicious activity and later on resign. CONTENT WARNING: DOMESTIC ABUSE The home is one of the only few places considered to be safe. A place where one can feel at peace; free of threats from the world crumbling in ruin. However, behind closed doors and drawn curtains lies a new crisis that grows in silence: the increase in domestic violence and crimes against women and children. As of June 2020, 3,600 cases of domestic violence have been reported by President Duterte since lockdown protocols were effected in the country, and it is highly likely that these numbers are a mere fraction of a larger statistic—a greater disease that holds innocent people captive. And yet, many still turn a blind eye to it. Many victims are left with no means of escape in the midst of quarantine. They are subject to various forms of abuse on a daily basis with little to no contact with the outside world. Though there are certain helplines available to tend to their situations, living with their abuser further induces fear of being caught when seeking help. The “new normal” also poses a problem for both women and children wherein they are left with no choice but to accomplish work or school-related responsibilities in their home—an unsafe environment that is unfit as a workspace. In more extreme cases, both women and children are subject to sexual exploitation as a source of income to feed their families or just get by. Even worse, the unseen enablers of this alarming issue are the members of Philippine society. Despite many initiatives that focus on preserving the welfare of women and children, the country remains founded on a patriarchal mindset that diminishes the worth of women. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, women are expected to continue domestic tasks such as housework and cleaning—free of pay. The right to accessing birth control and openly engaging in discourse on reproductive health is still considered taboo, yet the sexualization of women and children is a gold mine of profit. There are never-ending contradictions which fuel motives for those who desire to exploit the voiceless. People in power do so little to address the issue, and as it stands in disdain to those who are unaffected, everyone is involved and, in some way, accountable. There are many platforms that cater to helping victims and mitigating the detrimental effects brought about by abuse, but not everyone is informed of what actions they can take to reach these lines of help. Accessibility, visibility, and understanding are the three keys to abolishing the unnoticed niceties that shape society’s view on women and children. Even in distress and uncertainty, there is still hope for those who are shackled by a world that aims to silence them, only if we draw the curtains and see the bigger picture.

The coronavirus pandemic has and continues to reveal how effective the leadership of public officials is, and in this case, it is setting the nation free from an invisible enemy. Through a global lens, countries on lockdown are either defending themselves well or repeatedly missing their chance to curb the spread of the virus within state borders. However, a rare luminary in a world where crisis has wreaked havoc speaks notably of two names: New Zealand and Jacinda Ardern. The Prime Minister forged the country an early success against the virus. By the 15th of June, New Zealand had gone more than three weeks without any new infections, and the international praise for Ardern’s leadership read like the effusive write-ups seen on book covers. People from across the globe have aligned themselves to Ardern, and while it is not wrong for one to celebrate the deft victory, there is laxity in holding politicians accountable and beholden to the public. Politicians are in politics for the same reasons as most people are in other occupations. However, one specific seat superintends the entire nation under their judgment, and the duty that comes with such authority is the kind of power the people must treat without undue cynicism. In the 2016 Philippine presidential election, Filipino voters riveted to a certain candidate because of his mandate to clean up the crime-riddled and corrupt nation. The rich had more money rolling in, but an average Filipino would still take hours to get to work on a malfunctioning subway. As a result, the Filipinos were shattered enough to hope for a quick fix and got a man like Rodrigo Duterte elected as President, despite presages of him as a dictator in making. Politicians do not deserve over-effusive worship. They are public servants who can and should be scrutinized on the basis of public demands and standards of the press. There is a toxic dynamic among the myriad of Duterte’s resounding adherents and supporters despite the blood on his hands, debt breaching trillions, and a state that is nowhere near partial recovery from ramifications brought by the pandemic. Another example of the twisted idea of hero-worship is best provided by Trump. It rings true that many people would still find a reason to support him despite the crackdown on immigration, accusations of sexual harassment, the collusion with Russia, and other cruelties. Unflinching obedience and admiration to state leaders is a great threat to a democratic system. Indeed, leaders like Ardern deserve all the recognition for having a style of leadership that is deemed new and unequaled. Take Vico Sotto as an example—the Mayor of Pasig City who has attacked the issues of the coronavirus head-on. He was met with the same wave of popular support with social media threads that wax poetic and lionize his efforts. Public officials do not need fans, but committed constituents who can keep in check the inflated sense of self and aggression that leaders develop from hero-worship. Aligning oneself with a leader may result in the act of overlooking the negative effects of their decisions. When a leader is deemed remarkable by the public, that does not make them always right.

There was a time when nations went into war, and each day, the fear of death lingered among the innocents. It was World War I after all: soldiers died on the battlefield, children lost their chances at youth, and civilians suffered military and economic consequences. In the midst of fear and chaos stood the presence of art: art that mobilized hatred against the enemy, art that convinced the population of the justness of war, art that enlisted active support - propaganda art. Art has always been intertwined with the dangerous world of politics, and it is constantly reformed to cater to the social conditions and circumstances of the people. Activism art, in particular, seems to be the bridge wherein advocacy and artistry meet, as activism art serves as the visual representation of the efforts to create social change. Frankly, what social reformation cannot put into words is what art is capable of instilling and expressing. In the last few months, numerous social movements have arisen and amassed significant attention on both social media and the local news. Hashtags, petitions, and donation funds were created as platforms for the public to advocate and support movements such as Black Lives Matter, Free Palestine, Junk Terror Bill, and many more. 17
As a way to further raise awareness of the ongoing crises around the world, artists have created and shared their works on a variety of platforms. Such works vary from the mockery of political figures all the way to pieces that urge the public to reckon certain laws and policies. Despite the continuous rising of activism art at present, its vitality can be seen throughout the course of history. Evidence of this can be traced all the way back to the Nazis and the creation of works that glorified political regimes, as well as the documentaries of Civil Rights activists that entailed the prejudice against African Americans governed under white supremacy. Both events introduced social consciousness to the people and prompted the public to critique political injustices and revolt against a system that violates basic human rights. As Edgar Degas once stated, “Art is not what you see but what you make others see.” One can use their talents and abilities to create pieces that illuminate social change and provide a voice to the voiceless. Art is very much a spectrum as it is not subjective nor bound to any limits. Art was a tune that everyone could hear, a story that anyone could read, a color that no one could avoid; it was everywhere and it was everything. It lived in museums, filling white walls with window views of Starry Nights and hazy smiles of Mona Lisas. It lived in coffee shops, crooned and strummed from guitars and into microphones, echoed softly to tables for two. It lived in theaters, sung and spoken, and cried on stages to a thousand audiences who watched in awe. It lived in libraries, where students hunched over theories of evolution and children pored over tales of Neverland. For a moment in time, art was everywhere and art was everything; until it wasn’t, or so we thought. On the 16th day of March 2020, the entire island of Luzon was placed under the first wave of many quarantines. Frontliners rushed out to fill their roles and the rest of humanity was put on hold. Museums were shut down, live performances were canceled, theaters were closed, and library lights went dark all over the world, but art lived on. Amid the crisis, the art community did what they do best: being creative.
Inspired by artists like Shakespeare and Frida Kahlo who had crafted some of their most notable work in isolation, artists picked up their brushes, pens, and instruments, and began creating worlds that belonged to them and only them. Visual artists turned their virtual spaces into galleries of their own, musicians made music in the comfort of their bedrooms, theaters streamed renowned stage performances online, writers retreated into their stories looking for gold, and, all over the world, art marched on. But it didn’t stop there. Like many times in the past, art learned the language of revolution. As systems began to crumble and cracks in society started to show, artists fought back, not only adapting to the now-changed world but also changing with it. The world of art had become a safe haven for the oppressed and a symbol of bold defiance to the oppressors.
In spite of it all, art continues to be everywhere and art continues to be everything. Art lives on, and we can only hope that it always will.

Ambitious, competitive, and in constant pursuit of the truth -- these are merely three of the many traits that define Generation Z: a group of individuals born between 1995 and 2010. Many researchers have identified these qualities based on their access to the internet and modern technology, as well as how society’s economic, social, and political climates have shaped their environments. However, a rather overlooked characteristic about the group is the same that encompasses their approach to the world: their humor. There are many aspects to ‘Gen Z humor.’ It is a masterful combination of memes, viral trends, and substantial topics that many find relatable. However, the thing that sets the generation apart is how they utilize this humor. One of the most prominent things about their humor is how it is used as an effective coping mechanism. The downside to searching for justice and the truth is the burden of expectations—a curse where many are left to deal with the damages done by their predecessors—leading to depression and stress. As a result, the generation turns to the use of dark humor, where people can discuss their stories laced with damage and trauma in a way that brings them comfort. Generation Z has learned that in combating harmful ideals, one of the very few places strength is found is in comedy. The use of humor is also used to battle reigning authorities that spearhead long-running forms of oppression. Reclaiming forms of discrimination through comedy is an effective way to spread awareness in a consumable and entertaining manner. “Ok, Boomer” was a remark made to go against the conservative ideologies normalized by a generation born between 1946 to 1964, known as the Baby Boomers. It gained large waves of attention, both in backlash and support, and is a golden testament to how Generation Z uses humor as an effective tool for structural criticism. Since then, netizens proudly flood impressionable individuals and media pages with blunt and sarcastic remarks, coupled with sharing petitions, donating to various causes, and constantly amplifying voices to make a change. To many, social media is seen as superficial -- overrun by the obsession over large numbers and brand deals. But for Generation Z, platforms such as Twitter and TikTok no longer cater to repetitive content or overdone concepts. It is a home where the unseen and the unheard find refuge to communicate in a language that is purely unique to them.

One of the most successful and thriving industries at present is the entertainment industry, and a big part of this is dedicated to movie productions. Everyone has gone to the cinema to watch the current blockbuster film or tuned in to Netflix to enjoy their favorite show. However, not all have watched and appreciated a timeless art form in movie productions that paved the way for the evolution of modern-day movies – stop-motion films. Stop-motion films are the oldest style of animation in film. They originated and were popularized in Eastern Europe before making their way to the United States. Eadweard Muybridge discovered that by moving characters or puppets in small increments and taking individual photographic frames, connecting each frame one by one would show the subjects in a series of smooth movements. This introduced the concept of the first moving picture technique. The first stop-motion film was The Humpty Dumpty Circus, produced by J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith and released in 1898. The jointed limbs of acrobats and animal dolls were used to stimulate the movement of the characters.

The Enchanted Drawing (1900), Fun in a Bakery Shop (1902), and A Trip to the Moon (1902) were the first films that developed the stop-motion technique by manipulating drawings and clay figurines. By the 1970s, the technique was claimed as one of the most widely utilized forms of visual effect techniques used by movie producers, and by its peak in the 1980s, was greatly included in television series, commercials, and music videos. The peak of the art form came to its quick downfall in the late 1990s as the technique was replaced by technology, the new preferred medium in the movie industry. With the success of films like Jurassic Park and Pixar’s Toy Story, which made use of motion animated CGI rendering, such feature films quickly abandoned the handmade art form. Nevertheless, the modern era has shown movie producers reliving and giving new meaning to this ancient and unique art form by incorporating this with the industry’s advanced technology. Corpse Bride (2005), Coraline (2009), and Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) went a long way before becoming the stop-motion flicks we all love and enjoy today. Stop-motion gives a new vision and experience for every generation, which sets it apart as a timeless, underappreciated craft.

She says: “I can do with the working hours (which I hate) and the PPE (it’s really not comfortable and hot). The entire ordeal of isolating yourself, not going out, the sudden change of schedule/daily life - have been more difficult.”
It goes without saying that our frontliners are the ones most enduring the impact and consequences of this widespread sickness. And, if anything, they are the ones who need our support right now as they risk their lives working through this terrifying ordeal. “I really hope they won’t change their minds just because they’ve seen how hard it is to serve humanity,” says Yhana Cruz about fellow students studying Physical Therapy. “If we continue to box ourselves in fear, who else will heal our families when there are only a few health care workers left?” And she makes an outstanding point, not just about those working and risking their lives in the field of medicine, but also about us as collective members of society. Fear is what drives us apart, but maybe we can take solace in the fact that we are not facing this pandemic alone. At the end of the day, we need to begin accepting that the way our crisis is being handled is not in the best interest of the people. Now is the time for us to move forward, channeling all our uncertainties and trepidation into a will to fight for better systems. Rome was not built in a day, and a better society will not take a day to create either.

Online education has replaced the traditional “learning from school” scheme in lieu of the pandemic. With an entirely different environment, students face unprecedented challenges as they adjust to new habits. Many may also be in the process of discovering their preferred learning style to fit the needs of the school year. Students may have tried studying habits such as studying for long periods of time, massed or blocked practice, reading and rereading a text, highlighting important concepts and reviewing them, and rewriting lecture notes. Unbeknownst to many, these are also some of the ineffective study methods that take up time and are an illusion of mastery (Kang, 2019). Effective learning comprises two important elements: comprehension and memorization. It is important to comprehend the material one is studying before actually memorizing it. (Jubbal, K., 2020). It is also essential for one to be engaged in intense learning techniques. This means focusing on studying less with greater intensity rather than studying for longer periods of time but not absorbing anything. This learning style is called Active Learning, or more commonly known as Active Recall, and is defined as “educational methods in which students are involved in higherorder thinking (analysis, synthesis, evaluation). The term therefore primarily reflects what is going on in a student’s mind, whether or not the body (or the mouth) is physically active” (Neal, 2010 as cited in Active Learning Strategies, n.d.). In other words, it involves retrieving information from memory through testing one’s self at every stage of the revision process. The basic elements of this learning technique include talking and listening, reading, writing, and reflecting, comprising the components under the different study methods. 37

Each individual has a different learning style varying from four groups: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and reading & writing. This is why it is essential to understand how one works more effectively before shifting to a new learning style. However, there are a variety of techniques to cater to every unique learner:
1. The Feynman Technique The idea of this technique is to explain things simply. This is done by writing the topic on top of the paper and what the individual knows about its content as the body of the text. The aim is to write the information down as concisely as possible, as if one is explaining the topic to a 5-year-old. After which, the student goes over the content repeatedly and checks for mistakes, errors, or complex language.
2. Mind Mapping This technique helps organize one’s thoughts and visually sort out information, as well as to identify the relationships between these concepts similar to a map.
