Publisher’s Letter Reflecting on this issue, I think about all the love there is for the Town of Orange. I have encountered many business owners wanting to locate in town, some being former residents. What they have in common is the overwhelming feeling Orange is a fantastic place to live and work. For example, Matt Conklin who was born and raised here, recently opened Matt’s Barber Shop and was overjoyed to have found the perfect spot on the Post Road. Although Whitney Stewart did not grow up in Orange, she too felt the town was a wonderful location for her business, Fresh Start Technical School, because of the close-knit community. Another Orange resident we feature in this issue is Charles Rosenay, who recently published a book. A very different type of genre, The Book of Top Ten Horror Lists documents favorite horror movies of celebrities and the like. I hope you enjoy reading this issue, and I wish you a joyous holiday season! ANNEMARIE F. SLIBY Executive Director, OEDC As always, I wish to thank First Selectman James Zeoli, the Orange Economic Development Corporation, and the Orange Economic Development Commission for all their support; as well as our advertisers. A Women-Owned Winery Rooted in Family Tradition WRITTEN BY: ALYSSA DAVANZO

Alexa Charles knew that something was special about the wooded land her parents purchased in Orange back in 2012. Little did she know that nearly a decade later, it would become a lively sanctuary for friends and families to gather. “My parents immigrated from Italy in the 1970s, and years ago they found this piece of property that they fell in love with,” Alexa said. “It was pretty run down and forested, but when they started clearing through the trees, they would take one down and plant another. This turned into planting grape vines, and over time my family would come together every Sunday and maintain the plants. It was our way of staying together, even though we all lived separate lives.” Alexa’s love for making table wine with her father, using fresh grapes from the vines, sparked an idea to start a family business.

A DIVERSE MENU Whether a guest is looking to get their Chardonnay, Cayuga White or Frose fix, the menu comprises of a diverse list of flavors, a wine flight option and craft beer provided by Counterweight Local Brewery. “My sisters and I were thrilled to release a special wine in September,” Alexa said. “It was a high-end cabernet blend called Sorelle, which means ‘sisters’ in Italian. It was such a memorable day for us when our unique blend was unveiled to the public. We worked together to create this wine, and the outcome was fantastic.”

With extensive experience in the hospitality industry and fond memories of summers in Italy, it was natural for Alexa’s family to dive into the winery lifestyle. Today over 5,000 vines grow on the Stappa Vineyard property, with most of them being eight years old. FAMILY-FRIENDLY VENUE “Here, you can unwind, catch live musicians and spend time with your loved ones,” Alexa said. “We are family friendly, and it’s wonderful seeing kids run around and enjoy the land.”

“My dad and I made a delicious wine together one year, and everyone who tried it kept complimenting it,” she said. “He told me, ‘One day I’m going to make an award-winning wine,’ and it turned into wanting to open a vineyard of his own. As time went on, I became fascinated with the process of winemaking, and I dragged my sisters along with me.” Photo: Paula Severino

While Stappa offers a small charcuterie box by Cascade Fine Catering for sale, guests are welcome to pack a picnic for their visit. No pets are permitted on the premises, except for service animals.

“It still feels surreal that this business came to life,” Alexa said. “At Stappa, our goal is to create authentic experiences for our customers, and we look forward to being a part of many memories to come.” The vineyard is open Wednesday to Sunday throughout the year. Alexa says that it has been an honor connecting with her peers in the vineyard community and that she is eager to collect feedback from customers.

“We are thankful to have received so many compliments – even from visitors traveling from California! I love constructive criticism, and it’s been rewarding to hear that people not only love how our wine tastes, but also how relaxing the atmosphere is at Stappa,” Alexa said. “We are lucky to be a part of the Orange community, and it has meant the world to meet with vineyard professionals in the area who take the

“Over the past few months, we’ve had quite a few wedding parties take photos here,” Alexa said. “My family grew up in the restaurant industry, and then we moved into a wedding business that is still open in Hamden, called Cascade. I love weddings and am glad that couples are capturing such meaningful moments with Stappa as their backdrop!”

An Old-Fashioned Style Barber Shop WRITTEN BY: SHAILEEN KELLY LANDSBERG

The feeling of a traditional hometown barber shop was important to Matt Conklin, owner of one of Orange’s newest businesses, Matt’s Barber Shop, located at 288 Boston Post Road. Conklin, who was born and raised in town, definitely succeeds at giving that feel to his location. Three comfortable barber chairs stand at the ready for customers who enter Conklin’s brightly lit welcoming space. Each station in the shop is surrounded by simple and rustic décor and is well-stocked with all the necessary supplies. A big-screen television sits on the wall above the stations in full view of the customers. The station is tuned to the customers’ preferences, and often lands on a channel showing a game for whichever sports are in season. BECOMING A BARBER “I’ve been a barber for 15 years,” shared Conklin when asked about his career. “I was working in a group home when one of my friends mentioned he was going to barber school. I looked into it through Toni&Guy Hairdressing Academy in Newtown and liked what it was all about, so I enrolled and became a barber.“ Once he completed the training at Toni&Guy, Conklin was hired on as a full-fledged barber. He worked at Hero for Men Barbering in Newtown and also had the opportunity to teach at Tony&Guy. His dream to own his own shop grew during that time, and he began looking for a space to call his own. Recognizing there were fewer and fewer places that were strictly barber shops and there was still a need for that service, Conklin thought, “it

WINTER 2021

would be cool to open an old-fashioned barber shop.”

DREAMS OF ORANGE “I was so happy to have found this location – coincidentally I was at a store across the street and saw the ‘For Rent’ sign in the window, so I spoke with the landlord.” Conklin soon signed the lease and officially opened the doors on June 22, 2021. “It is so nice to come back to my hometown to open a barber shop,” smiled Conklin, who grew up in Orange and went through the town’s Amity school system. “I’ve always wanted to be here.” Services Conklin offers are what most people would recognize – men’s haircuts and shaves, and women’s cuts if they are looking for a barber-style cut. One of Conklin’s specialties is the old-fashioned hot towel shave, using the steamy hot towel, a disposable straight razor, and traditional creams and lotions.

BUILDING HIS CLIENTELE “Business has been good so far, and is continually picking up,” said Conklin. “It was interesting starting from scratch, but I’ve done some advertising, use the A-frame sign out front, and of course use social media. A lot of business has come through word of mouth, and the ‘Shop Local’ initiative has really helped.” At press time, Conklin is the only barber on site, but he has plans

to hire additional barbers as more customers come to use the services. When asked what his favorite part about running Matt’s Barber Shop is, Conklin smiled. “It’s not at all like an office job. I love the barber-client camaraderie, and I get to meet people from all walks of life, all ages, and | 15

I also get to hear their interesting stories. I love to listen to the older guys talk about their life experiences. Sometimes a person doesn’t want to talk during their haircut or shave, though, and that’s okay.”

“My goal for Matt’s Barber Shop is to be the typical neighborhood shop for all generations, where everyone feels comfortable; everyone feels welcomed,” added Conklin.

A Good Time for a Fresh Start WRITTEN BY: SHAILEEN KELLY LANDSBERG

A new technical school has come to town! Fresh Start Technical School, located at 391 Boston Post Road, opened in September of 2021 and is indeed a place for those looking to get a fresh start to receive their education and training in the areas offered.

Stewart, who has a background in phlebotomy, shared that she loves filling that role, but realized years ago that she loves teaching even more. “I’ve been a phlebotomist for 14 years,” explained Stewart, “and an instructor for 7 years. I have traveled all over the country doing CPR trainings and have taught over 500 classes.” NEW BEGINNINGS Originally from Miami, Stewart, the oldest child in her family, fell in love with the Northeast and eventually moved to Connecticut. “I wanted something different after being raised in Miami. I loved the seasons of the Northeast, and the variety of weather, so I moved here.” While working as a corrections officer in Vermont during the pandemic, Stewart recognized that many people were looking to change careers. Calling on her passion for teaching, she began developing the plan for Fresh Start Technical School and was excited to open. “I am so glad I had a strong family behind me to encourage me; to push me when I was feeling frustrated and discouraged.” The school’s grand opening was held on WINTER 2021

September 25th and the first classes began shortly after.

THE IDEAL LOCATION As Stewart deliberated on where to open her school, it became clear that the Town of Orange was a perfect location. “It is such a close community, where people know and care about each other. I also did some research and saw that there weren’t any technical schools in the immediate area, so Fresh Start Technical School could fill that need.” The school itself has a welcoming entryway, with balloons and decorations sporting the school’s colors of orange and green. A reception desk and waiting room greet those who enter. There are two classrooms, each with the ability to accommodate twelve students, and a well-equipped clinical lab with all the supplies and equipment needed for students to learn their new trades. The equipment includes CPR “dummies,” phlebotomy chairs, fullbody mannequins, and more. Students encompass a wide age range, from 18-60 years old, and Stewart emphasizes that adults of any age are welcome to enroll in the programs she runs. “You’re never too old to get a fresh start,” she shared, “and this is a great place to do it.”

HANDS-ON TRAINING Stewart’s style of teaching is very hands-on. She follows her curriculum, and each concept is

gone over in repetition until students master and feel comfortable with it. Stewart even offers herself as a practice subject for her phlebotomy students. “They can be nervous the first time they ‘stick’ someone, so I let them use my arm their first time. That way they know how it feels to do a venipuncture before they ever see a patient.”

A FLEXIBILE CURRICULUM “So far the students love it,” Stewart smiled. “We have day, evening, and weekend programs available, so there is a class that fits every schedule.” | 19

The Clinical Lab, similar to a hospital room, with a practice phlebotomy station to the left and a full body “patient” mannequin to the right.

The day programs for Phlebotomy Technician and Certified Nursing Assistant run Monday through Friday, 7 am to 3:30 pm for 3 weeks. The evening programs for both are Monday through Thursday 5 pm to 9:30 pm for 7 weeks, and the weekend Phlebotomy Technician program is on Saturdays for 13 weeks. The cost for each of these courses is $1,300, and payment plans are available. A phlebotomy refresher course is offered for $800, Security Guard Card certification is $80, and CPR

certification is also $80. Stewart is currently working toward obtaining grants for tuition assistance for those who qualify. Stewart plans to hold graduation ceremonies for each of her classes at the end of their courses, as well as alumni gatherings at least twice per year. She is also planning to hold community events at the school and encourages local residents and businesspeople to watch her web page, www.freshstarttechnical.com

for details and to join her for these fun gatherings. She shared “My favorite holiday is Christmas, so watch for the announcement for that event. There are going to be a lot of remarkable things coming from Fresh Start Technical School!” Contact Fresh Start Technical School by calling 203-257-0817 or emailing to freshstarttechnicalschool@gmail.com. Crime and Trauma Scene Cleanup, An Unspoken Industry WRITTEN BY: CHRISTOPHER MILLER

Wanting a career change and a desire to do more fulfilling work, Orange resident Matthew Hill left the corporate world and opened a very different type of cleaning service just over a year ago in Orange. Bio-One is a company that specializes in crime and trauma scene clean up and decontamination for homicides, suicides, and undiscovered deaths. Other services include hoarding cleanup and disinfection, blood clean-up/biohazard, odor removal, rodent dropping cleaning and disinfection, junk hauling and more. Bio-One operates with discretion in unmarked vehicles to avoid revictimizing customers. They pride themselves on treating clients with compassion and understanding.

When asked how he found himself with Bio-One, he explained, “When the pandemic hit, I did some soul searching and wanted to do something a little more meaningful with my career.”

“I have a good friend that was doing match making services for franchises, and I had been a volunteer firefighter in Woodbridge, so he knew I could handle this type of work and thought I should look into the franchise.”

Bio-One is an independently owned and operated business with 163 locations around the United States. Hill is the owner of the Connecticut branch, covering the entirety of the state. Bio-One focuses on bio-recovery and has a fully trained and certified team dedicated to moving people forward after a difficult situation.

Hill had spent 20 years in corporate America within the supply chain field and was making the daily commute to Stamford, which was exhausting. WINTER 2021

MAKING A CHANGE Originally from Woodbridge, Hill attended Amity High School and has lived in Orange for the past 15 years. “I love Orange, but it’s definitely the community–Orange and Woodbridge—that really make it an amazing place to live and work.”

PEOPLE’S NEEDS FIRST Wanting to help people and to do work with meaning, the Bio-One philosophy was one that fit with Hill’s vision. “What’s unique about the company is that it is a People First and Business Second approach.” “Helping people in their greatest time of need is what’s most important,” he continued. “In instances of traumatic events, the family is left to clean the site once the medical examiner has left the home. It’s horrible to have a tragedy with a relative, son or daughter and then having to clean it themselves after having already gone through the traumatic loss situation. That’s where we come in and take care of things—helping people move forward quickly after a traumatic event.” Hill continued that the first call is often times the only call. This isn’t an industry where there is much shopping around. “You are not going to call seven companies and make it a prolonged situation. As owners, we need to constantly market to ensure we are top of mind when a tragedy occurs,” he says. That is one of the challenges Hill has encountered – the marketing. “Being essentially a one-man show, balancing operations and marketing is a challenge,” Hill said.

DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIPS “Getting in front of the police/fire departments, gaining trust, and making relationships, is a challenging part of the business.” Biohazard cleanup companies rely heavily upon

recommendations and referrals from the agencies that handle the situation initially, so establishing those connections is important. When asked if he sometimes takes on the role of a psychologist, Hill said, “Yes, especially with hoarding cases. We get a lot of hugs and tears, because a lot of the time, we are working with the elderly or disabled. They could never do what we help them with, so they are very grateful for us being there and getting it done.” With hoarding clients, “We also want to provide referrals for help, so this does not happen again – we do a lot of partnering with psychologists and professional organizers to help them.” HAVING COMPASSION Hill again emphasized the difference between Bio-One and other cleaning companies is how their people first approach truly separates them. “It’s about being empathetic, that you’re there for them, and walking them through what you are going to do. These people are letting you into their private lives, so it’s a very sensitive time for them,” Hill said. Bio-One not only helps with the clean-up, but also with many of the

processes after. “When it comes to hoarding, we also work with the family and try to help them through the entire process. We take them on the entire journey – estate sales, selling vehicles, refurnishing the home (free of charge), or recommending other resources to assist, especially if clients are helping loved ones from out of the area or out of state. We try to do anything we can to get them through their situation.” Hill also said Bio-One’s pricing and financial arrangements are also a major differentiator. “We work on pricing with people – coming back to people first. Competition can be substantially higher, and we can do it for at a reduced cost, which is one of our advantages. Veterans Repurposing Your Unwanted Items WRITTEN BY: SHAILEEN KELLY LANDSBERG

One of the newest businesses in town is dedicated to helping people remove items that no longer serve them, while giving exceptional customer-focused service. The Orange-based franchise of JDog Junk Removal and Hauling, owned by local resident Sean-Michael Green, sports camo-wrapped vehicles showcasing the company’s military-based theme.

“Our goal is to give people back space in their lives,” shared Green. “We take something unwanted but still of value and give it to someone who can use it.” The company also removes items of little or no value and either recycles, repurposes, or appropriately disposes of them. OWNER’S BACKGROUND Green moved to Orange 8 years ago when he accepted a position to serve as the Associate Vice President for Graduate Enrollment at The University of New Haven and began to teach in the Master of Public Administration Program. He then joined the team at Albertus Magnus College as the Vice President for Enrollment Management.

There is currently no storefront for Green’s JDog Junk Removal and Hauling franchise, but he has been looking for a commercial space. He and his staff have a dump truck used for hauling, and as the business grows, the vehicle fleet will be expanded. There is also a unique vehicle in the fleet, “The Orange franchise has the only JDog muscle car—my 2002 Camaro Z-28!” BUSINESS MODEL Green explained that a military mindset is used in serving his customers, who can expect that he and his employees will “Be on time, be respect-

“I always wanted to pursue entrepreneurship,” stated Green, who has

founded several businesses. Green had been aware of the JDog Junk Removal and Hauling franchise opportunity for a while; in fact, his younger brother, also a Marine Corps veteran, owns a franchise in their home state of Pennsylvania. “JDog is my primary business and main focus now. We’ve actually set up a friendly competition between brothers,” chuckled Green.

JDog Junk Removal and Hauling as a brand has a commitment to keeping as many of the items as possible out of landfills. According to its website, “We reuse, recycle, resell, and re-purpose your items whenever possible. Sixty to eighty percent of the items we haul away are kept out of landfills.”

THE BIG SCREEN The brand is even launching a television show called Operation Hidden Treasures, which premiers on the Discovery Channel and the American Heroes Channel in October and “The show follows two veteran teams from JDog Junk Removal and Hauling as they take unwanted items from homes and businesses, then transform them into necessities, keepsakes and valuables for people in need.”

Turning a Unique Passion Into a Book WRITTEN BY: CAROLINA AMORE

When one ponders the horror genre, what typically comes to mind? Maybe scary movies, suspenseful music, or even tumultuous novels can keep the reader on the tip of their toes. Orange resident, Charles Rosenay brings to life all the different perspectives of the horror field with his new book, The Book of Top Ten Horror Lists. Charles Rosenay is the owner and operator of Liverpool Productions, offering DJ services and tours. He organizes the FAB4 Music Festival, music-themed travel tours, Haunted Castle Tours, and founded Fright Haven, a seasonal haunted attraction. His newest endeavor is his first popculture book, The Book of Top Ten Horror Lists.

“I remember my mom saying, I love horror movies, it’s about time you watch them,” he said. Rosenay was not much older than 5 or 6 years old when he watched his first horror movie, Bride of Frankenstein, with his parents. He said, “I sat with my hands over my eyes the entire time. Back then, we had no cable or Netflix, so the same movies played every night,

and after the third time, I watched the entire movie—I was hooked.” From that point forward, Rosenay’s love of the horror field grew exponentially and brought him to where he is today, publishing his first book. CELEBRITY INPUT Rosenay’s creation, The Book of Top Ten Horror Lists, contains entries from various celebrities that give the book several perspectives. He came to be involved with celebrities through the Beatles conventions he produced. In 2010 he produced The Weekend of 100 Rock Stars, a rock and roll extravagan-

A FAMILY BOND Rosenay’s love of the horror field was immersed at a young age through his family. He described growing up in the Bronx with his parents as a happy

and supportive childhood. Rosenay spoke of the closeness between him and his parents and the shared bond they grew to have over watching movies together at the end of each day.

the ten things in life that have scared me the most.’”

What makes Rosenay’s book special is not just the favorite horror movies by celebrities; it is the additions that are unique and at times of a personal nature. There are entries from people like Ed Asner, William Shatner, and much more. Some intriguing lists are about the ten sexiest scenes in horror movies or the funniest horror movies. Rosenay said, “People really thought out of the box and came up with amazing themes.”

za, not unlike a Comic-Con, but with one hundred stars of the rock and pop music field performing, meeting fans, and signing autographs. It was during this time that he became friends with many superstars. He said, “When you become friends with someone from the Beach Boys, and then he introduces you to someone from The Turtles, or The Monkees-it snowballs.”

THE WRITING PROCESS The idea to create a book out of pop culture icons’ top ten horror lists was years in the making and began with an online newsletter called National Horror Happenings, where Rosenay reviewed horror movies. Once a month, the newsletter got a top ten list from an actor or writer in the horror field, and after years of gathering all this information, he accumulated about 80 lists. It was not until the rise of COVID-19 that Rosenay had the time to sit with this list and create a masterpiece with it. When speaking of the writing process, Rosenay said, “Had it not been for COVID-19,

There are numerous creative selections throughout the book that Rosenay captured to contribute to different dimensions. One addition was close to home for Rosenay as his all-time favorite horror persona is Frankenstein. Boris Karloff was the actor who played Frankenstein and Rosenay reached out to his daughter, Sara Karloff, to get her list. He said, “When I asked her for a list, she replied, ‘I hate horror movies, I don’t think I’ve ever watched beyond my father’s movie, but I want to contribute to your book. I am going to put in WINTER 2021

After over a year of Rosenay’s hard work, his book is now available on Amazon as well as the publisher’s website. He says, “I want people to order from the website from me directly so I can sign every copy and personalize it to the individual.” Once Rosenay starts meet and greets at horror conventions, his book will be available in different states. Even with Charles Rosenay’s busy life and many endeavors, this is not the last that the literary community will be hearing of him. He has numerous book ideas, one being a sequel to his current book possibly titled, Bride of Top Ten Horror Lists, a callback to the movie Bride of Frankenstein. He plans to write about the top ten Beatles lists and paranormal Connecticut stories, sights, and hauntings. For more information, call Charles Rosenay at 203-795-4737 or email Bookoftop10horrorlists@gmail.com. Books can be ordered via the website: www.BookOfTop10HorrorLists.com. 

The Book of Top Ten Horror Lists, believe it or not, is not just about horror movies. There are eloquent intricacies that bring this book to life. Rosenay reached out to John Lennon’s sister in the hopes of getting a list from her to add to his creation. When prompted, she said she did not know any horror movies; instead, she wrote a thesis on the horrors of Shakespeare’s works.

this book probably would not have come out. The time away from my busy work endeavors gave me the discipline to stay at the computer and work on my book.”

Sunrise Pharmacy – Care Beyond Medicine WRITTEN BY: KAREN SINGER

On a bustling street in Orange, a small, independent pharmacy is building a business based on customer-centric service. While going through the laborious process of obtaining the necessary documents for starting Sunrise Pharmacy, Rehman worked at several independent and chain pharmacies in New York and Connecticut.

“We’re focused on patient care,” says owner Adil Abdul Rehman, a 33-yearold pharmacist who opened Sunrise Pharmacy in April 2021, at 240 Indian River Road. SERVICES OFFERED As a community/retail pharmacy, Sunrise Pharmacy can do much more than dispense pills and other medications. Rehman also advises patients and caregivers consult with health providers, perform health screenings, and administer vaccinations.

Rehman also works with patients to improve medication adherence, or the extent to which they take their medication as prescribed. Sunrise Pharmacy offers an array of customized options for dispensing medication, such as pre-filled pill boxes, blister packs and color-coded multi-dose packaging. Another service, medication synchronization, enables patients to get all their refills on a single day every month. School immunizations, as well as vaccinations such as flu, pneumonia, shingles, and COVID (Johnson & Johnson) are offered at Sunshine WINTER 2021

One service, Medication Management Therapy, is a comprehensive approach to healthcare that includes educating patients on their health conditions, advising them how best to take their medications and monitoring for adverse drug reactions.

He did not like chain pharmacies, as he felt there was little patient interaction. “I wanted to do more for patients than just dispense medication,” he says. At Sunrise Pharmacy, Rehman adds, “Your family’s health is our top priority, and we take the time to answer any questions.”

Pharmacy. In addition, flu and strep testing, free blood pressure screening and blood glucose monitoring are also available.

LANDING IN ORANGE Rehman scouted retail spaces in Derby and Waterbury before choosing Orange, where there is a large concentration of seniors in town and nearby municipalities. “I wanted to serve the elderly,” Rehman says, “I feel I could be extremely helpful to them.”

He promises in-store customers can get their prescriptions quickly. “And we have free delivery to patients and facilities within a 30-mile radius,“ Rehman says.

The 1,000 square-foot Indian River Road storefront was desirable, he adds, because of the many nearby doctors’ offices and other health and medical businesses.

IN THE BEGINNING Rehman grew up in Pakistan, where he worked as a pharmacist until moving to New York in 2014. He dreamt of opening his own pharmacy. “I was thinking of going to Canada, where I had an uncle, or Ireland, where my brother lives, but felt there were more opportunities in America,” he says. “Many of my pharmacy school classmates went to Canada and the Middle East.”

Sunrise Pharmacy accepts most medical plans, offers discounts to seniors and veterans and “tries to accommodate patients without medical insurance,” Rehman says. A prescription discount coupon card is available for those not on government insured programs.

cluding skin and eye care, pain killers and cold and flu remedies. There is an expanding selection of medical equipment ranging from back support belts and compression socks to nebulizers, canes, walkers, and bathroom aids. POSITIVE REVIEWS Feedback from customers, including some stellar online reviews, indicates he is reaching his target audience. One review, about a grandmother

who has saved money on prescriptions, says, “The pharmacist is so kind and really takes the time to get to know his clients.” Another review praises Rehman’s persistence in tracking down a hardto-find injectable medication. “The pharmacist was incredibly helpful and, over a two-week period, helped me get the prescription,” the reviewer says. “The follow-through was amaz-

Sunrise Pharmacy’s tagline, “Care beyond Drugs” is in line with the results of a recent survey by the National Community Pharmacists Association. Fifty-six percent of respondents expected to increase their health care services, including immunizations, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. And more than 50 percent believed consumers favor local businesses over chain stores. “I enjoy working in the Orange community,” Rehman says, “and look forward to meeting more people from the area.” Contact Sunrise Pharmacy at 475-2099284 or https://sunrisepharmrx.com 

Socialization for Children and Why It Matters SUBMITTED BY: MORGAN STEIN, CENTER DIRECTOR, BRIGHT HORIZONS

After spending so much time at home throughout the past 18 months, are you worried about your child’s social development? You’re not alone.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOCIALIZATION All areas of growth and development are connected — and social interaction boosts healthy brain development. How? When children socialize with each other, they learn how to interact — to give and take, both verbally and non-verbally. They build empathy and the ability to negotiate. And they learn social cues and social norms. All of this helps encourage cognitive, literacy, and physical development.

has still been socializing — with you, others in your household, and even pets. They’ve still been able to work on give and take, back and forth, accommodating each other, reading cues, and playing together.

play situations: have them introduce themselves and ask the other children’s names. Or, join in play with your child and others, gradually stepping out as your child feels more relaxed.

BUILD SOCIAL SKILLS WITH PLAY As your child gets back into the swing of things, play is a great way to boost social development — it’s an incredible educational tool. Familiar games — such as Simon Says and Red Light, Green Light — can help resurface social skills like taking turns, following directions, and showing self-control. Structured play (think: board games) and unstructured play (such as building with blocks) can help, too. And for infants, something as simple as peeka-boo can build a social foundation.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT At Bright Horizons at Orange, you’ll find a place for socialization — and for kids to be kids — with health and safety policies that set the standard for the industry. Here, small group activities and a supportive environment help encourage interactions and build relationships. Children have opportunities to make new friends, enjoy one-on-one time with primary caregivers, and get the guidance they need to learn how to communicate, take turns, and solve problems. We know that social-emotional skills have an impact on future success — they’re just as important as academic skills — and we’re here to help your child get ready for all the big steps ahead.

HELP YOUR CHILD EASE BACK IN Meet your child where they are, with the support they need. As they get comfortable being around others again, it might help if you stand with them while watching other children play — and talk about what you see. Help them figure out how to enter

Re-envisioning the Chamber for Today’s Business World WRITTEN BY: KATHY CHARBONNEAU

Chambers of Commerce are not out-of-the-box, cookie-cutter organizations. Every chamber is unique, with different benefits, resources, and opportunities. However, the end goal is the same: to serve as a support system for the local business community, which in turn helps the entire community to thrive. Just as many businesses learned to adapt, grow, and survive during these challenging times, so must Chambers of Commerce. Since becoming Executive Director of the Orange Chamber of Commerce in May 2021, my overarching goal has been to re-envision the Chamber’s role to meet the needs of local businesses in today’s everchanging business world. We have been working hard to focus our energies on programs with measurable value and impact for our members and the greater Orange community. When assessing whether an event or program is the best use of the Chamber’s resources and time, it must check off these questions: Will it promote local businesses and help them grow? Will it connect Chamber members with community members? Will it cultivate relationships that will make our local businesses and community stronger? If we can check those boxes, then it’s worth moving forward. NEW PROGRAMS The Chamber is thrilled to announce two new programs that will help bring the community together with local businesses through the past, present, and future. The programs are called Bicentennial Bricks and the Shop Local Club. WINTER 2021

BICENTENNIAL BRICKS In 2022, the Town of Orange celebrates 200 years of existence with it’s Bicentennial. The Chamber is planning a beautiful installation of bricks around the Gazebo at High Plains Community Center. There will be a public dedication ceremony as part of the Bicentennial activities. Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of Orange history and help support our local businesses by supporting the Chamber. If you would like to get involved in any way, contact me at director@orangectchamber.com or 203-795-3328. I would love to hear from you!  | 43
