The ALLI awards were first presented in 1987 to recognize businesses for their support and in 1992 expanded to include individual volunteers and the media. In 1993 the Vianne B. Web Lifetime Achievement Award for arts professionals was added and most recently the Bettie Minette Cooper Arts Educator Award in 2005. Our own BRAVO! magazine which launched in January 2008 was the ALLI Media recipient that year and capped a wonderful turnout of local support for the Cultural Alliance.

The next award ceremony will be held as the 25th Silver Anniversary. A committee of volunteers is now forming for what plans to be the Premier event of the year: the 2012 ALLI Awards for Cultural Art Achievements in Hampton Roads.

To all of you who were nominated in 2010, to the Cultural Alliance and to the ALLI award committee headed by Nancy Rhode of Hampton, and of course all of our sponsors, contributors, friends, volunteers, Todd Rosenlieb our Master of Ceremonies and the TR Dance Company, your leadership and your passion serves as a beacon for us all to follow. The 2010 ALLI Awards It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2010 Alli Awards at The American Theatre, a landmark in Hampton Roads. Originally built in 1908 as a “high class motion picture and vaudeville house” the theatre has enjoyed a colorful and varied history. This is the only remaining of four theatres in Hampton.

2010 marks the twenty-third presentation of the Alli Awards. The Awards honor the many individuals, arts educators, arts professionals, businesses and the media whose tireless efforts make arts and culture a half-billion dollar industry in Greater Hampton Roads.

Today’s nominees provide diverse experiences for both residents and visitors. They contribute time, talent, resources, leadership and creativity to make Hampton Roads a lively and vibrant region. From world class museums to international authors; from award winning visual artists to outstanding instrumentalists; from professional theater and choral ensembles to communitybased theater and choral groups; from glass artists to fabric artists; from historic sites to computer-generated images our region enriches and nourishes our daily life. Our host city sums it up “From the sea to the stars.” We live in the midst of abundant arts and cultural opportunities.

Regions with vibrant arts and culture climate experience cultural tourism and a community where businesses thrive and new businesses and industries emerge. Creative, talented people energize the workforce with innovation, and the competitive advantage is strengthened. The arts do more than entertain, inspire us, and nurture the soul, they create jobs, promote a stronger more skilled and creative workforce while generating tax revenues and building communities both culturally and economically.

To each of the 2010 Alli nominees, “Thank You” for your time, energy, resources, creativity and your willingness to give of yourself. John Lawson

John Lawson has been an active participant, advocate and generous benefactor of the arts for many years. He has been responsible for the construction of some of the most impressive new buildings in the region including this theatre, the Ferguson Center for the Arts, the Mariners Museum, The Peninsula Fine Arts Center and the Virginia Living Museum. He is also a committed leader of capital campaigns for art facilities. John has served as Chairman of the Board of the Mariners Museum. His personal commitment and leadership as well as his exemplary financial support have greatly enhanced the success of many major arts projects in Southeastern Virginia. He took an avid personal interest in the restoration of The American Theatre and personally intervened to save Hampton’s oldest historic house, the Herbert House.

Business Tommy O’Connor O’Connor Seafood – Suffolk

Tommy O’Connor

Tommy gives an extraordinary amount of time, along with personal resources, especially in his support of the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts. He is also a major supporter of arts organizations on the Eastern Shore, including the theatre in Cape Charles and the Barrier Island Museum. For over 40 years he has supported creators of a dying art – decoy artists. Along the way, he has developed strong bonds with many carvers throughout the Eastern United States. He has supported numerous other artists and organizations, many of them anonymously. Tommy was honored recently by the Audubon Society as Conservationist of the Year.

Susan T. Bernard Executive Director, d’Art Center – Norfolk

Susan T. Bernard

Susan participates in many organizations that benefit the arts in Hampton Roads.

Her primary achievement has been the conception, development and continued growth of the d’Art Center since 1983. Working diligently to promote the Center’s programs, Susan has instituted numerous art classes and programs, including those for at-risk children through the Young Park Project and summer camp programs. Susan is also a leader in fundraising projects for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. She has spearheaded the annual d’Art auction fundraiser since 1985, is an avid art collector, and has led the growth and relocation of the Center to its highly visible location at the Selden Arcade, where its mission of bringing arts to the community and to involve citizens with the arts through hands on experiences is possible.

Arts Professional Jackie Merritt Musician – Artist – Hampton

Jackie Merritt

Jackie is an award winning artist and enjoyed a long visual arts career. She was an illustrator for Random House Publications, and was privileged to study with Georgia O’Keefe. She has taught visual arts and music in the schools. This year she conducted a visiting artist residency in music in Virginia Beach and Lima, OH. She has taught drawing at the Governors School for the Arts, Old Dominion University, and the Charles H. Taylor Art Center in Hampton. She teaches drawing and painting at Thomas Nelson Community College. Her paintings are widely exhibited and recognized with numerous awards. Jackie is a musician and member of three bands, and is recognized for her singing, songwriting, harmonica and guitar playing. She still finds time to volunteer for the Natchel’ Blues Network, and she is the “M” in MSG: The Acoustic Blues Trio. Radio host Paul Shugrue named them as one of his top 10 local favorite bands in 2009.

Karen Anderson-Schwartz Artist – Williamsburg

Karen Anderson-Schwartz

Taking time away from creation of her own art, Karen Anderson Schwartz devotes her volunteer hours to This Century Art Gallery of Greater Williamsburg, The Virginia Watercolor Society and a program of her own creation – Buddy Art. In her service to This Century Gallery, Karen coordinates art scholarship programs for area high school students, chairs the annual juried art show, and serves as the Gallery’s webmaster, a service she also provides to the Virginia Watercolor Society.

Karen developed for This Century Gallery a program called, Buddy Art, a series of free art classes providing art experiences for Williamsburg area children with special needs. Providing a variety of art activities, young participants are partnered with student volunteers from the College of William and Mary – Buddies – who help to supervise class projects. The Williamsburg arts community has been strongly impacted by Karen’s broad range of volunteerism, expertise and professionalism.

She is an innovative force as an artist, arts educator, and arts organization builder.

Anthony Stella

Tony Stella is a long time volunteer and supporter of arts through his work with the Peninsula Fine Arts Center and the Charles Taylor Arts Center. Through contributed time amounting to thousands of hours Tony has engineered construction for exhibitions and has been a docent for the galleries. He has unusual and valuable skill as a handler of art and in dealing with unique requirements of certain exhibition pieces. He does it all with enthusiasm and energy using the finest level of teamwork. He serves in similar roles at the Peninsula Community Theatre, and The Williamsburg Players. He is also an avid fan of art museums, opera and music.

Volunteer George Ware Artist – Volunteer – Hampton

George Ware

George is a classic example of how one finds fulfillment through the arts in retirement. After a long career with NASA, George is an artist and tireless arts volunteer. As a member of the Hampton Arts League he organized a smaller group, “The Tuesday Morning Painters.” The informal painting session engages others. He also studies painting at Thomas Nelson Community College, along with watercolor and acrylic painting at Christopher Newport University. He serves as a volunteer assistant for Professor Betty Anglin. His work has hung in juried art shows. George was instrumental in bringing a painting class to Warwick Forest Assisted Living Facility in Newport News. He chairs the Public Art Steering Committee for the City of Hampton. .

Bettie Minette Cooper Arts Educator It is intended to recognize a distinguished arts educator from our region.

This award satisfies a longtime desire of the Alliance to honor someone whose career as an arts educator has had an important impact on the arts education in Hampton Roads, and is part of a group of people who have the vision to nurture and build creative – minded adults for the future.

Patrick Mullins

Patrick Mullins Associate Artistic Director – Virginia Stage Company – Norfolk Visionary Education programs to teach through theatre classics Recently, Patrick told the classic love story,” Romeo and Juliet” in a bold, new way, infusing it with digital media and fulfilling a professional goal to make all literature relevant to every generation. Since he came to Virginia Stage Company, Patrick has been fully engaged in the promotion of arts and arts education in Hampton Roads. He serves as the director of CULTIVATE, an educational outreach partnership with Old Dominion University. Patrick directs two main stage performances and two school touring performances, reaching more than Ten Virginia Counties. The work, “Mystery Side Show” examines the use of myths and legends and their purpose in society in the zany setting of a carnival sideshow. He will stage Julius Caesar for students as the pop entertainment of its time, where iambic pentameter comes to life in a tale of misinterpretation. Through CULTIVATE, Patrick exceeds the theatre’s educational goals by developing programs that engage every age group through their educational journey.

Creative Leadership Fulfills the goal to recognize the expanding reach of the industry. The award recognizes extraordinary effort and achievement not only in Hampton Roads but throughout Virginia.

Susan B. Hirschbiel

This award acknowledges someone whose extensive activities locally, regionally and statewide, enhance the value that all arts and cultural organizations offer their communities on a daily basis. This individual leads the charge in expanding the reach of arts and creativity, and they bring expanded distinction to the arts and culture industry.

Susan B. Hirschbiel Volunteer – Philanthropist – Arts Advocate – Virginia Beach Susan’s nominator writes, “Anywhere that children and creativity come together, Susan is there.” Her contributions have a wide reach. As board president of the Virginia Arts Festival, Susan provided leadership for the Festival’s “Next Stage” campaign successfully working toward its strong, public presence. She has also served on the board member of the Chrysler Museum of Art, Chair of the Business Consortium for the Arts Board and by appointment of Governor Mark Warner on the Virginia Commission for the Arts. For the past five years Susan chaired the statewide “Minds Wide Open” campaign – a Celebration of Women in the Arts”. Her hands-on leadership resulted in an initiative that highlighted thousands of exhibitions and performances. Susan remains steadfast in her commitment to improving the region’s quality of life through the arts. In addition to her personal financial commitment, she commits many hours of time and talent to assure success for the projects in which she is engaged..

Vianne B. Webb Lifetime Achievement For those of you who did not have the chance to experience the many ways in which the late WHRO Vice President applied her passion for the arts and enriched the cultural community – especially music and opera – this award allows us to discover those in the community who carry on the vision that the arts speak to all we are in our daily lives and help us reach multitudes in special ways. Vianne left us in 1993 and I think she would be pleased to know what her work meant to the region’s arts community.

Ann Dearsley-Vernon

Ann Dearsley-Vernon Artist – Arts Educator and Advocate – Norfolk Ann Dearsley-Vernon has dedicated her life to three things: raising her three daughters; the American Civil Rights Movement; and, the pursuit of art, artistry, arts advocacy and arts education. For 26 years Ann served as Director of Education for the Chrysler Museum of Art. During that time she built a nationally recognized Docent Program, and educational programs utilized by hundreds of teachers and thousands of students. She has been applauded by the arts industry for her commitment to artistic principles. She served for decades on the Gifted and Talented Board of the Norfolk Public Schools. Ann is now retired, but continues fine work with the YWCA, the Chrysler Museum’s Friends of African American Art, Tidewater Arts Outreach, and TCC’s Visual Arts Center Advisory Committee for Studio Arts.
