Welcome to the fifth edition of our quarterly magazine. In this issue, Joan Pochin talks about how the rich, versatile art of oil painting has captivated her for years and continues to be her favourite artistic medium. Oil is a very adaptable medium that lends itself to many painting styles—from the precision of photorealism to the freedom of expressionism. She also uses Ink Wash for some of her subjects. In addition, we are featuring some inspiring watercolor paintings from John Beardsley and Barry Sutcliffe. They both believe that watercolour art is a very powerful way to express your feelings – in particular, watercolour can be effectively used to present the artistic vision on a piece of paper.

A Local Artist Speciality Landscape
I have exhibited at various craft fairs and am a member
I
am a local artist. I spent my working life in the textile trade, during this time I was involved in the research and development of new designs for lace products. Having always had an interest in art, upon retiring I attended several painting groups, eventually developing my own style. I think if there is one artist who’s work I was attracted to it would be Geoff Kersey the landscape painter. After attending one of his
painting workshops I decided to concentrate my painting in watercolours. I get a lot of my inspiration from walking in our local parks, I usually take my camera along to capture the ever changing seasons. I have recently done quite a few commissions for people who want a particular view recorded for themselves.

am a local artist and have been painting for pleasure for over 30 years. I exhibit at the Smoothie CafĂŠ & Gallery and am an active member of the Ilkeston Arts & Camera Club. My paintings are regularly shown in local exhibitions. My inspiration is drawn from nature. I
The beauty and wildness of the place really inspired me to try and capture the area.
enjoy walking in both the countryside and by the coast. I have walked a lot of the coastal paths around the country, including the S.W. Coastal path from Minehead to Poole. I love Northumberland and Pembrokeshire, the rugged scenery really inspires me. My paintings are mainly of
my walks & scenes around and about my home in West Hallam or where I have been walking on holiday. I carry a small sketch book with me, take photographs and complete the picture in my studio at home.

2017 May Art Festival The festival shows and promotes the work of our resident artists and emerging artists, and provides opportunities for emerging curators to share their visions. The festival introduces emerging artists and curators to each other and to the larger local and artistic community. The exhibitions give the community the opportunity to live with free and accessible visual and contemporary art in their midst. When presented in our historic St Mary’s building, the artist installations celebrate the unique architecture of our town. Be one of 50 exhibitors at the 3rd Annual Ilkeston Art Festival at the Cantelupe Centre 14th May 2017.
have been interested in watercolour painting for many years. In 1988 Ann, my wife, and I bought the Post Office on Little Hallam Lane, Ilkeston where Barry’s Gallery was established My extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for art were helpful in developing the Smoothie Art Café on our retirement. My position as Art Director helps the group to promote and encourage the growing number of artists wanting to display their work. We all appreciate what a bonus it is to have a town centre location to show our varied art work in different mediums. Barry has completed over 1,000 paintings, including many local scenes and is very appreciative of the support received, especially from the people of Ilkeston.
Limited commissions, especially of private houses undertaken. He also welcomes new pupils, on a one to one basis.
