Bythetimeyoureadthis,itwillbealittlebelated,butstill:Happy NewYear!Lastfall,ourStewardshipCommitteespokeof2023as ayearfor“StrengtheningFoundations.”Thatwillcontinuetobe animagetobringfocustoourchurchministries—thesearchfor anAssociatePastor;invitingpeopleontoaFamilyMinistryTeam togrowourdiscipleshipeffortsforfamilies;invitingpeopleinto classesandsmallgroupstogrowintheirfaith;long-range evaluationofourbudget;strengtheningrelationshipsthrough fellowshipeventsandsmallgroups;andmuchmore.

Iwantyoutoconsideritpersonallytoo:whatspecificwaysdoes GodwanttostrengthenthefoundationofChristinyourlifein 2023?IsthereaBiblereadingplan(somanyofthemfreeand availableonline!)togetyouconsistentlyinGod’sWord?Isthere amissionofourchurch—WARM,volunteeringatSMILE,CareNet, HOPE,orsomethingelse—thatwillstretchyourfaiththroughacts ofservice?IsGodcallingyoutostrengthenChrist’sfoundationin ouryoungpeoplebyvolunteeringwithsomepartofour children’soryouthministries?AsourSessionstretchesour budgetinfaithtogrowouroverallwitnessandtocallan Associatetofamily/children/youthministry,isGodaskingyouto strengthenyourcommitmenttohowyoumanagethegiftshe hasgivenyou—yourfinancesaswellasyourtime,energy,areas ofinterest,andskills?

I’vepersonallybeenthinkingaboutthisquestionmyselfoverthe holidays,andifyouhaven’talready,joinmeinallowingGodto guideyourstepsin2023:whatspecificnextstepsisGodasking youtotakesothatHecanstrengthenthefoundationofChristin yourlife?Answeringthatquestionbenefitsnotonlyyou personally;itwillbenefitthemissionandwitnessofourentire church,too.

InNovember2022,OutreachElderPattySmithtraveledtoThailandtovisitmissionariesJoshua andMargaretNaidu.Hereisherletterrecountingtheirvisit:

TheNaidusarepartofYouthWithAMission(YWAM)organizationandhavebeenservingin Thailandfor20years.JoshuaisfromSingaporeandMargaretisfromIndonesia,andtogether theyhavefourdaughters.TheyworkinUbonRatchathani,anhourfromtheLaosborder.In additiontobeingchurchplanters,theyalsoaddressneedssuchasfloodreliefandfooddelivery. Itraveledwithafamilyfriend,GeraldBarry.WewenttochurchwiththeNaidusonSundayand Tuesday,metwiththemeveryday,andgotagoodunderstandoftheirministry.Iwasaskedto prayforthepastorandothersonSundayandIgavethemessageonTuesdayatahomechurch. Wevisitedthepropertytheyaredevelopingtoenlargetheirministry.Theycurrentlyhavealarge buildingwhichwillserveasameetingplace,indoorandoutdoorkitchens,andhousingfortheir 10teammembers.Therearealsothreehousebuildings,onewhichishopedtobeacarefacility forabandonedinfants.Theothertwobuildingswillshelterothers,asneeded.

Mypurposeofthetripwastonotonlyseetheministrybuttounderstandhowweasachurch couldgoandhelp.Ourchurchregularlysendsmoneytotheministry,whichisablessingforus. WhenIaskedJoshuaifwecouldserve,hesuggestedthatwecouldcomeattheendofNovember orthefirstofDecemberandpresentChristmasprograms.Otherchurchgroupshavecomeand servedinthepast,sohehasareallyclearplanonhowthiscanbedone.

Whenaskedtosumupthecurrentandfutureneeds,JoshuatoldmethatbecauseofCOVID19 theywereforcedtoslowdownbutnowtheirevangelismisbeginningagain.Thebuildingproject isgoingslowly,butsurely.Theneedisgreat,but…God’shandisinitallanditwillhappen!

EachyearwehaveoperatedasaDrop-Off,ithasbeenveryclearthatministryopportunitiesare abundantonthissideoftheshoebox.Evenduringthequietshifts,theopportunitytospendtwo hourswiththeothervolunteers,peoplewithwhomwemaynotusuallychat,givesusachance tobuildcommunitywithinthecongregation.Herearesomeothertakeaways:

1.CommunicationsDirector

.TheeffortsoftheCommunicationsDirectorhavehada directimpactonturningthisministryintoachurch-widedrive.EileenMillerbuilds excitementandengagementthroughoutthelastmonthofcollectionandmakesmembers feelinvestedintheoutcome.DuetoPaxPresFacebookposts,Igainedfourteenage volunteersnotaffiliatedwithPaxPres.InthelastminutesofCollectionWeek,thePax Prestotalwas1,500shoeboxes.DuetoEileen’srecurringpostsurgingusto“goover” 1,500,wehadateamoffourworkingonpackingjustonemorebox.One5-9yearoldlittle girlwillneverknowtheamountofeffortandlovethatwasputintoherboxasthisgroup ofwomenworkedtogethertopushusover1,500withherbox.

2.ConciergeService

.WehaveopportunitiesallweektosharePaxPreswithvisitors.Lina, age3,droppedoffhershoeboxwithhermom.Whileexplainingtoherwhereherbox wouldbegoing,Ishowedherthecartonsonthestageandshesawallthepreschoolrideontoys.SheaskedwhytheywerethereandItoldheraboutthepreschool.Hermomsaid theyhadjustmovedhereandwerelookingforsomethingforherprobablyfornextyear. Inthefoyer,therewasprintedinformationaboutHoneyMacCallum,whichIwasableto provideLina’smom.(Theup-to-dateofferingsfortheChristmasseasonwerealsohelpful whenitcameupinconversationwithvisitors.)

3.SevenGablesAcademy.Lastyear,Ihadavisitfromafamilywhousuallydroppedtheir boxesoffatchurch.OnaFridaynight,theyfoundthemselvesatPaxPresdroppingoffthe boxesfromtheirhomeschoolco-op.LucyandBen,then7and5,spentsometime unloading,countingandcartoningtheirboxes.Theylearnedwhatwouldhappentotheir boxesandweprayedtogether.Thisyear,theirmomtrackedmedownthroughtheArea Teamandaskedifwecouldsetsomethinglikethatup,butfortheirentirehomeschool group.SevenGablesAcademy,all12dressedintheiruniforms,arrivedonaTuesday morning,justasahugedrop-offfromLexingtonParkBaptistChurchwasarriving.They immediatelyjumpedinandunloadedthetrailer!Wespentquiteabitoftimetogether havinganOCC101class.Astheywerereadytoleave,oneoftheirteachersaskedifthey couldsingforus.Andtheyabsolutelyknockedoursocksoff!Buildingtheserelationships withinourcommunityisanamazingpartofwhatthisministrydoes.

4.LexingtonParkBaptistChurch.OurrelationshipwithLPBCcontinuedthisyear andisstrengtheningandgrowing.FredandSandiHeplerhavevolunteeredmany hoursatourDrop-Offinthelastthreeyears,afterLPBChadtodiscontinueinthat capacity.Thisyear,theyattendedourpackingpartyandwerebeyond impressed.OnTuesday,anothermemberofLPBC,Wendy,droppedoffboxes, becauseshehadmissedtheirchurchdeadline.FredandSandiwerethereandI learnedthatWendywastheirrighthandwhentheywereDrop-OffTeam Leaders.WendysaidshemisseditandIinvitedhertojoinus.Sheandher husbandbothvolunteeredonThursdayandsaidtheywantedtobeaddedtomy volunteeremaillist.TheyalsosaidtheyhadheardfromFredandSandiaboutthe packingpartyandwantedtobeinvitedtothat,aswell.

5.Partnership.IvaluethepartnershipbetweenRachelandmyself,butduring CollectionWeek,evenmoreso.RachelsetsuppackingopportunitiesforDrop-Off volunteers,incaseourshiftisquiet.Sheworkstirelesslyadjustingitems,leaving directions,findingboxes,etc.Hermanyhoursarenotincludedinourtotal, becausetheydon’ttechnicallycounttowardtheDrop-Off.Thatsaid,Rachel, KristinLawrence,andLizetteVarnerspentmanyhoursontheProjectLeaderside ofthehouseinthatfinalweek.

6.Thestorythatwillstickwithme

.OnNovember16th,theDrop-Offhourswere 5:00-7:00p.m.IsawthattherewasanaccidentontherouteIusuallytaketoget tothechurch,soIdecidedtotakeanotherroute,whichtookmeupThreeNotch Road.Ilefthomeandgothungupintrafficduetoaseparateaccident.I’mnot onetogetuppityintraffic,butforsomereason,IwasreallyantsyandIfeltvery late…despitethefactthatitwas3:45p.m.andIdidn’tneedtoopentheDrop-Off foranotherhourand15minutes.Ifinallygotfreeofthetrafficandarrivedat churchat3:55p.m.AsIwasputtingtheOCCsignsup,awomanpulledupand askedifIcouldtakehershoeboxessinceIwasabouttoopen.Shelookedather watchandwasembarrassed,thinkingitwas4:55,not3:55.Itoldhertogivemea secondtoparkmycarandwecouldabsolutelytakecareofit.Thiswomanusually droppedoffherboxesatadifferentlocationbutthoughtshecouldjustdosoat PaxPressinceshewasinthearea.ShelookedattheOCCwebsiteandsawwe wouldbeopeninjustalittlebitsosheheadedourway.Shewasverydownand verylonely.Wespentagoodwhilejusttalkingandsheopenedupaboutsome thingsgoingoninherlifeandaskedifIcouldpray.Beforesheleft,afterabout30 minutes,shehuggedmeSOHARD.HadLindaarrivedat4:55p.m.,Imaynothave hadthatprivatetimesheneeded.Andthattraffic?Everythingthatafternoon workedinawayonlyGodcanorchestrate,gettingmetochurchjustbeforeLinda arrived.

7.TheWhys.Inthe“thankyou”emailIsenttotheCollectionWeekTeam,Iaskedif anyonehadanythingtheywantedmetosharewithyou.Whiletherewasnothing specific,hereareacoupleoftheirtakeaways:

RachelPortillo–“IlovethepartnershipwehadwithpeoplefromLexingtonParkBaptist. Agreatexampleofbuildingbridgeswithotherbelieversforthesakeofthegospel.”

PastorMattinvitedRachelandmetositdownwithhimandtalkabouthowthingswentthis yearanddiscussourvisionfor2023.Lastyearandthisyear,PaxPreswentwellovertheideal collectiontotalsforaDrop-Off.WhenaDrop-Offhits2,000shoeboxes,theAreaTeamgetsto worktryingtofindanadditionallocation.Wewerejustshyof3,000shoeboxesthisyear,which taxesourabilitytocreatetransformationalexperiencesforourdonors.WhatI’velearnedis that,whateverhappens,ourchurchwillworktogethertomakeCollectionWeekwork,whether it’s88cartons(thefirstyear)or192cartons(thisyear).Withthenumbersthisyearbeingwhat theywere,ithadtobeanall-hands-on-deckevolutionanditwasasuccessonlybecauseofthe willingnessofourcongregationfromage3to83tolendahand.

AndabigTHANKYOU,onceagain,tothetrusty soulswhocametoputuptheChristmaslights inNovember!GlendaLytleandHazelStotler, whosetupouramazingluncheonafterour “hardwork”;ChrisandKristinLawrence,Bill Quinn,TimUnangst,CindyRomano,Betsy Kebaugh,RitaReeves,andPatsySchumacher. Whatawonderfuldisplaywecreated!The churchsparklesatnight,hopefullycalling attentiontoourchurchbuilding,andinviting alltocomeandjoinusforworshipand fellowship!

TheGardenClubwouldliketotakeamoment andgiveaspecialshoutouttoKevinSmithfor hisunrelentingefforttokeepourchurch groundssowell-tended!Kevinisatthechurch, unfailingly,eachweek.Ifanyweedssnuckby himthepreviousweek,he’salloverthemand theyaregone.Hehassingle-handedlygotten ridofthevastmajorityofleavesfromour manytreesandisconstantlylookingforways tosimplifyandimproveourlandscaping.And speakingofimprovingourlandscaping,another specialshoutouttoLauraGuidowhois responsibleforthevariousinterestingand colorfulplantingsthatspringupnearthe MemorialWalkwayentranceandtheentrance upthestepstoHoneyMacCallumPreschool. TheGardenClubissogratefultoeachand everypersonwhocomesandhelpspullweeds, trimbushes,removeyardwaste,transplant, mulch,fluffmulch,prune,andeverythingelse wedo!THANKYOU!

TheChristmasStrollwasverywellattended, andtheGardenClubboothreceivedalotof traffic,aswewerewellsituatednearthe entrancetotheNarthex.Thatevening,wegave awayapproximately55bulbsandglasses,with ribbonsandinstructions,plusreceived$66.00 indonationsforplantsthatweredonated (thankyou,DianeKleinschmidt,Patsy Schumacher,andJeanReamy!)andwentto newhomes!Thenextday,morebulbswere givenawaytochurchmemberswhowerenot abletoattend,aswellastosomeHMCparents whowerearoundthefollowingweek!Alltold about70bulbsweredistributed.Maytheyhelp everyonerememberGod’sloveisnever dormant,Heisjustwaitingfortherighttimeto bringhisplanforeachofusto‘flower’andbe beautiful!ThankstoRitaReevesforhandling theset-up,manning,andtear-downofthe booth,almostsingle-handedly-andalsoto EdwardLorekforextrahands(andoccasionally PatsySchumacher)!

Asallgrowingthingsslowdownwithwinter’s cold,sodoyourdedicatedGardenClub workers!Thisisawelcomerespitefromavery busyyearofhands-onworkaroundourlovely grounds.Staytunedforcrepemyrtletrimming (whichcouldhappeninFebruary),andthenour workwillbeginagaininearnestintheSpring! May2023beabanneryearforallofyou,with Hispeacesurroundingyoulikeawarmblanket!

Weareintothewinterseasonandwithitcomes ourWinterRetreatfortheyear.Weareheadedto RiverValleyRanch(RVR)mid-Januaryforamid-year chargeup.RVRoffersgreatactivitiesandsomesolid togethertimeforouryouth.Justasimportantare themessagestochallengeusinourwalkforChrist andthePraiseandWorshiptimethatgoesalong withbeingonretreat.

OurYouthGroupthroughoutthefallwasfullof activitiesandseveralspiritualtalksontopics including:“LongingforTogetherness,”“WhereDo WeFindOurIdentity,”and“TheImpactsofGossip.” Butitwasn’tallserious…wespentsometime playinggameslikeMurderintheDark,DodgeBall, andsomenewoneslikeRock-Paper-Scissors-Cup. OntheSaturdaypriortoThanksgiving,we celebratedourannualFriendsgivingcompletewith turkey,stuffing,macandcheese,plentyofsides, anddesserts.Wehad22regularattendeesand13 guests,whichwasawesome!Weweretruly thankfulforthe10adultvolunteerswhocameto helpserveandworkthekitchen.

OurYouthGroupalsoparticipatedintheannual ChristmasStroll-playinggames,singingwiththe YouthBand,manningthelivenativity,andworking thebooths.Everyonehadagreattimeatthisyear’s successfulevent!

Throughoutthefall,PastorMattpreachedontheArt ofNeighboring,livingwithothersinawaythatreflects ourcenteringonGod.PaxPresmemberGeniePosnett, atalentedartist,feelsasenseofneighboringasher eyesaredrawntotheintricate,colorfulstained-glass windowsofFirstPresbyterianChurchonTownCreek Drive.Shefeelsadeepconnectiontooneparticular window,whichwasdonatedbytheWattersfamily, friendsofherfamilythenandnow.Inspiredbythe wondersoftheGospelstoryinthesechurch-filled windows,shefeltastrongnudgetocreateabanner echoingtheirstyleandcolors.Theprocessevolvedand wascompletedonlythroughthesupportofothers. “WheremightIfindtherightfabricforthecenter Focus?”shewondered.Intheneighborhood communitywasthefiberartistwithanavailablebatik fabric,bothintenseandyetpeaceful.Whatajoy!With detailedstitching,thesquarepanelsbecameaborder, eachmatchingacolorinthewindows,inplaceto Focus?”shewondered.Intheneighborhoodcommunitywasthefiberartistwithanavailable batikfabric,bothintenseandyetpeaceful.Whatajoy!Withdetailedstitching,thesquare panelsbecameaborder,eachmatchingacolorinthewindows,inplacetoframethebanner center.Oncemore,shequestionedifshecouldcreatestriking,inviting,andwelcomingwords ofinvitationforthecentralspot.Ananswertoprayerbroughtforthfellowchurchmember, MaureenWysham,whocreatedthestrikingGothicletters-easilyreadablewiththe elementsremainingsimple.Althoughsteady,thepanelsseemtomoveabout,announcing thecentermessage:“DoThisInRemembranceofMe.”WhenweentertheSanctuary,we havefullviewofthisCommunionbanner.Itreplacesanydivisionwithabridge,joiningusas neighborsinabondofloveandacceptancethroughChrist.Geniecametoknowdeeplythat themoreweopenourmindstoGod’sinspirationandlisten,thecloserourartworkgetsto praisingHim.Throughoutherlife,shehasbeenconsciousthatherartistryisagiftfromGod, havingbeenamemberofanartgroup,creatingnumerousstitcheryprojects,eachshouting ofGod’sgoodness.Ratherthancopyingculture,sheawaitsGod’swhisper,believinginfaith thatHewillprovideinspiration,aswellasotherswithwhomshecanlinkarms.Desiringto awakentherealityofGodtoothers,shemakestime,seekspeaceandprosperityforthem, andsharesherart-withGod’sgloryinmind.Withgratitude,mayweviewthebannerasa pathwaytodeepenouroutreach,sharingCommunionwithneighbors,andexpandingGod’s Kingdom.
