Mt. Adams is ALIVE!

tart with the venerable streets and houses, both narrow, both picturesque. Accept that some of the architecture is quite marvelous and some pretty ordinary, but that together they create a fabric and scale that works. It’s the architecture of the whole, not any single building that 1s Mt. Adams architectural charm. Then add the views - from the bend in Carney Street, from the Hil Street overlook, from the Ida Street Bridge, from a house or condominium that you know. Remember how the seasons can change Mt. Adams: how it looks in the spring, when flower-ang trees bloom on St. Gregory, or in the fall, when red and orange leaves encircle the Cloisters. Think what fog, or snow, does to the hilltop. Now you have a framework. Then drill down: the piazza at Pavilion and St. Gregory, with its flowers and cheerful bronze monk fountain; the profusion of plantings both public, courtesy of the Mt. Adams Garden Club and private owners; the tiny houses on the steep hill below Fort View Place, accessible only by stairs that run down to Martin Drive; the Immaculata and the bells at 1111 St. Gregory Street sounding on the quarter hour; the Pilgrim Chapel, with its yellow stained glass and annual spaghetti dinner. The charm of Mt. Adams is the combination of all that it is - and has been and can be, in the eyes of those who adore it. Fort View Place and Jerome Street are still brick (not concrete because their xesidents fought with the City to keep them that way. On St. Gregory, the

sidewalks are lorick, and tree lined and the utilities are buried because our company believed in it so strongly that we helped pay for it. Over the years, we have worked on our Mt. Adams projects with many talented architects who had or still have studios in the neighborhood. Our first in 1964 was the very creative Tom Hefley, who zehabbed his own home on Ida Street in the early sixties. Then came others equally gifted: Otto Bauer-Neilsen, Jim Fearing, Greg Tilsley, Carl Strauss and John Senhauser. John, Whose studio is on St. Gregory Street and home is on Hill Street, has designed or redesigned a number of Mt. Adams’ houses and is supremely sensitive to the scale and texture.
