MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT PEGGY DETARANTO

BUILDING A STRONGER COMMUNITY TOGETHER

Living in a homeowners' association has many benefits, but it can also present challenges from time to time. As members of Sun City Aliante, we all want our community to be a place that we are proud to call home and where residents feel heard and respected. It is natural for homeowners to have questions, concerns, or differing opinions. We encourage residents to bring those concerns forward. Open communication is essential to a healthy community. Equally important, however, is that these conversations remain respectful and focused on finding solutions. It is helpful to remember how the Sun City Aliante Association functions. Every homeowner is a member of the Association, a nonprofit corporation governed by an elected Board of Directors. The Board is entrusted with making decisions on behalf of the community and in accordance with our governing documents. To carry out the Association's daily operations, the Board employs a professional management company. Management is responsible for implementing Board policies and overseeing the maintenance and operation of our common areas, finances, administrative functions, and resident services. The Board and management share a common goal: serving the best interests of the entire community. While not every decision will satisfy every individual, each decision is made with careful consideration of our governing documents, legal obligations, financial responsibility, and the long-term well-being of the Association. Our governing documents and Rules exist to ensure fairness, consistency, and equal treatment for all residents. They protect everyone's ability to enjoy our community and its amenities while respecting the rights of our neighbors. Applying these rules consistently is one of the Board's most important responsibilities. As we interact with one another, whether in person, at meetings, or through email and social media, I encourage everyone to communicate with courtesy and respect. Personal attacks, harassment, intimidation, or inflammatory comments do not contribute to productive discussions and only make resolving issues more difficult. We can disagree without being disagreeable. Strong communities are built on cooperation, understanding, and mutual respect. By listening to one another, following our governing documents, and working together in good faith, we can continue to make Sun City Aliante a welcoming and enjoyable place to live. On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your continued support, your involvement, and your commitment to our community. We appreciate the many residents who volunteer their time, share constructive ideas, and help make our neighborhood a great place to call home. As September rolls in, we welcome the changing of the seasons and several special observances. Labor Day kicks off the month, followed closely by the start of the NFL season. September 11 marks Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish New Year. September is also recognized as Healthy Aging Month, encouraging us to stay active and take care of our physical and mental well-being. On September 26, we celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day—a perfect reminder that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away!" As the summer heat begins to fade and cooler temperatures arrive, it's a great time to get outside, enjoy a refreshing walk, and embrace the beauty of the season while staying healthy. Be kind, smile, Margaret (Peggy) Detaranto Sun City Aliante HOA Board President

GENERAL MANAGER with parades and parties – festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with – a street parade to exhibit "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday.

Hello Friends, This month I want to focus on the origins of Labor Day ~ the annual federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September that celebrates the social and economic achievements of American workers. We celebrate the holiday on September 7, 2026.

American labor has raised the nation's standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known, and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker.

History of Labor Day ~ The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being. Early Adopters ~ Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. After municipal ordinances were passed in 1885 and 1886, a movement developed to secure state legislation. New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. That year four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York – passed laws creating a Labor Day holiday. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

How Has Las Vegas Celebrated Labor Day? Over the years, Las Vegas has transitioned from a modest familycentric holiday destination into the "Pool Party Capital of the World," marking Labor Day weekend as the official, high-revenue climax of the summer party season. The Historical Evolution of Labor Day in Las Vegas • The Mid-20th Century (Family & Casino Driven): In the 1950s through the 1970s, Las Vegas marketed Labor Day as a classic holiday getaway for driving-distance tourists from California. Resorts attracted visitors with standard casino tournaments, lounge acts, and low-cost backyard-style buffets. • The 1990s (The Megaresort Era): The opening of massive resorts shifted the holiday into a blockbuster entertainment weekend. Las Vegas began booking arena-level concert acts, world-title boxing matches, and high-production residencies specifically timed to the three-day weekend. • The 2000s to Present (The Day club & EDM Revolution): The launch of daytime beach clubs completely redefined the holiday. Labor Day transformed into a multi-million-dollar electronic dance music (EDM) festival environment spread across the Strip, focusing heavily on youth culture, VIP bottle service, and celebrity DJs.

Who Founded Labor Day? ~ It is not entirely clear, but two workers can make a solid claim to the Founder of Labor Day title. Some records show in 1882, Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, suggested setting aside a day for a "general holiday for the laboring classes" to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." Many believe machinist Matthew Maguire, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research supports the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, New Jersey, proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. Both Maguire and McGuire attended the country's first Labor Day parade in New York City that year.

Enduring Holiday Traditions ~ While the scale has exploded, certain pillars of the Las Vegas Labor Day weekend have remained consistent over the decades: • The Final Splash: It has historically served as the symbolic "last hurrah" of the summer, driving the highest pool attendance of the year before resorts transition to autumn operations. • Massive Strip Gridlock: The holiday has consistently broken regional travel records, clogging Interstate 15 and filling McCarran/Harry Reid International Airport to maximum capacity year after year. • Labor Union Roots: Local culinary and trade unions—the backbone of the city's hospitality industry—frequently use the holiday weekend for solidarity events, rallies, or community picnics away from the tourist corridors.

The First Labor Day ~ The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

BOARD MEMBER'S MESSAGE NEIGHBORLY LIVING: COURTESY, CONNECTION, AND COMMUNITY By Dan Lies

Cooler fall weather is here. Our snowbird neighbors are returning, and new neighbors are moving in. It's time to consider what it means to live in our senior community and how we can make it a more neighborly community. One of the greatest pleasures of living in a senior HOA community is the opportunity to know the people around us. A friendly greeting, a thoughtful gesture, or a respectful conversation can turn a collection of homes into a true neighborhood. Courtesy does not require grand effort; it grows through small, consistent choices that help everyone feel welcome and valued. Neighborliness often begins with habits so simple that we may overlook their importance. Smile and say hello when meeting at the mailbox. Introduce yourself at Lunch 'n' Learn events and community trips. Holding a door, returning a wave, learning and using a neighbor's or staff member's name are small signs of respect that can brighten someone's day. When connection and respect is established, if a concern arises, it can be handled with a calm, private conversation. Always seek to understand, listen to the response, and look for a reasonable solution. A sentence such as, “I wanted to mention something and see if we can work it out,” invites cooperation. If the matter involves safety, repeated violations, or governing documents, speak with our Management rather than gossiping or involving uninvolved neighbors. Due to privacy concerns, status may not be shared, but actions are probably in motion. Watch for new people and those who differ in mobility, interests, and comfort with technology. Especially in our clubs, welcome neighbors and make them comfortable in our community by speaking clearly, being patient, sharing important information, and avoiding assumptions about what another person can or wants to do. Invitations should be warm but never pressure. A neighbor who declines one activity may happily join another.

BOARD MEETING SUMMARY Sun City Aliante Board Meeting Summary Below is a summary of action taken at the August 12, 2026 Board meeting: New Business: A. The Board approved appointing the following homeowners to the Review of Association Policies, Rules & Regulations Ad Hoc Committee: • Wayne Headrick, Chair • Frank Detaranto • Sharon Grossman • Kevin Miller • Linda Schlegelmilch • Ray Packowski • Jeanne Locaynia B. The Board approved the creation of the Author, Artisan, and Remarkable Nevadans Club. C. The Board approved the purchase of one (1) Rola-Chem Pool Chlorine and Acid Controller and one (1) Rola-Chem Spa Chlorine and Acid Controller from Poolweb.com for a total cost of $4,455.89, plus applicable tax, to be paid from reserve funds. D. The Board approved donating the eleven (11) purple chairs currently located in the conference room to a licensed nonprofit organization. E. The Board approved the proposal from RSI in the amount of $3,921.94 to paint the restrooms located outside the Vista Room using Capital funds.

A strong neighborhood is not built by rules alone. It is built when residents choose patience over irritation, conversation over assumption, and kindness over indifference. We do not have to be close friends with everyone, but we can be friendly, courteous neighbors. Every greeting, considerate choice, and respectful exchange helps make our HOA a place where people are glad to live—and proud to call home. Dan Lies Secretary, Sun City Aliante Board of Directors

You may not be aware of how the advertisers in this publication directly support our community.

On July 22, I was proud to show my support at the fifth annual North Las Vegas Battle of the Badges blood drive at Aliante Casino Hotel and Spa. This year's event carried special meaning. The American Red Cross is facing a nationwide blood shortage and our North Las Vegas police officers and firefighters answered the call. The North Las Vegas Police Department took home the win with 70 donors to the Fire Department's 57, but in the end, we are all winners. This year's blood drive was dedicated to Commander Jeff Lomprey, a retired North Las Vegas Fire Department arson investigator. Together, our first responders set a new event record with 127 donors and 116 units collected, surpassing the goal of 100. If you would like to give blood, you still can by visiting redcross.org/give-blood and use sponsor code NLVBOTB or call 1-800-733-2767. A s a r e m i n d e r, p l e a s e remember to take care of your pets in this extreme heat. Make sure they always have access to shade and fresh water. The City of North Las Vegas municipal code requires that when temperatures are expected to exceed 85 degrees, animals kept outdoors must have access to shade. When temperatures are expected to top 105 degrees, an additional cooling source such as a mister, swamp cooler or air conditioning is required. Our summers are no joke, and our pets are counting on us. Speaking of pets - mark your calendars for the 7th Annual Paws in the Park on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Aliante Nature Discovery Park. This free community event will feature a pet health and wellness fair with onsite vaccinations, microchipping, pet exams, spay and neuter vouchers and plenty of fun for the whole family, including a Doggie Paw-rade, trickor-treat, food trucks and live music. Registration for vaccinations and microchipping opens Sept. 8. Call Hearts Alive Village at 702-780-0002 to reserve your spot. Services are available while supplies last, so do not wait.

IS YOUR RESUME WORKING FOR YOU?

How often have you said to yourself, “I wish I knew h o w m y resume holds up to that job description w i t h o u t having to send it in and h o p e i t works.” The good news is that you can now do that.

If you are a new resident or have moved to another home within the community, please contact Customer Service Coordinator Carol Garbarino to schedule a registration appointment. All new Sun City Aliante residents (homeowners and renters) are required to register with Carol Garbarino in the Customer Service Office at the Community Center. At the same time, you can obtain a Membership Card which is required to access all activities in the Community C e n t e r. Jobscan.co (not .com) is a free website that allows you to upload a copy of your resume, along with a copy of the job description, and generates a report that not only scores your resume against the job description, but includes specifics as to what you're missing, and suggestions for improvements. The scan by itself is helpful in improving your resume, and includes sections on searchability, hard skills, soft skills, and recruiter tips. There are some caveats. The free version allows for up to five scans per month. If you want to find out about resume formatting, the top three hard and soft skills being searched for, or AI optimization for your resume, you have to upgrade. The upgrade costs $49.95/month to pay monthly, or $89.95/quarter ($29.98/month paid in 3-month increments). The scan will tell you what you're missing, but not how you should include it. They make recommendations on word count or number of achievements, but nothing specific about what you want to add to your resume, nor how you should add it. On the plus side, it does give you useful information. Each section gives you a count of how many items to fix. This helps you to identify where your resume is strong, and where it might need a boost. It does let you know if you are missing sections, like a summary statement, education, a LinkedIn URL, or, most importantly, contact information. This reference to a LinkedIn page is a friendly reminder that your resume is but a summary of your true professional persona, the full contents of which, they'll find on your LinkedIn profile (which has a lot more room to allow you to be more specific in your descriptions). Jobscan.co is yet another tool for you to use when creating the image you want to project when searching for that next opportunity. You can use the free version to guide your progress, or, if you so choose, use the paid version to get even more advice. If you have any questions regarding the job search process, or have an interest about a specific topic, let me know. I can be reached at gmschall@gmail.com.

GOTHIC LANDSCAPING MAINTENANCE REPORT The maintenance performed in July 2026 includes, but is not limited to the following: • Selective Pruning around Community Center and Aliante Pkwy. perimeter. Trimming includes removal of deadwood and built-up debris. • Weeds are being hand-pulled along front and back of the Community Center as well as the Bocce Ball Court. • Trimming around the parking lot areas has been completed for the month, and we are working to complete the pruning of low hanging branches. • The turf area at Widewing Park is mowed on a weekly basis. • As of May 1, we started irrigation timers to water up to 6 days between the hours of 7 p.m. to 11 a.m. per SNWA Mandate. The next watering change is scheduled for September. • Palm tree pruning is scheduled to be completed by the end of August. • The backflow testing will also be completed in August. • Any warranty plants will be scheduled to be installed in September/October because of hot weather. • The turf area at Widewing Park will be mowed weekly in the summer months on Fridays to the height of three inches. Taller blades help by providing shade and protecting soil from direct sunlight which helps reduce evaporation. • We are currently following the SNWA recommended watering up to 6 days per week. The watering schedule stays into effect through September 1~ which is Monday - Friday between the hours of 7 p.m. - 11am and never on Sundays. All work was performed in accordance with accepted horticultural practices.

As a beginner to pageantry, Alyssa went into the National American Miss Nevada pageant with the goal of gaining a new experience, different from anything she's done before with the support of her sponsors. Her proud sponsors included: the Sun City Aliante 8 Ballers; the Sun City Aliante Euchre Club; the Southern Nevada Women's History Project; Excel A c a d e m y L a s Ve g a s ; a n d h e r grandparents, Dwight and Denise Gerdes. Alyssa left her internship with the Nevada Division of Minerals Abandoned Mines Summer Program where she was camping throughout rural Nevada five days a week to find and cover hazardous mine shafts to protect the public. She received the 1st Place Heart of Service Award for her volunteer work with the Southern Nevada Women's History Project, the Friends of Nevada Wilderness, and the Protectors of Tule Springs. Along with being the 1st Runner Up for Academic Achievement and Spokesmodel, Alyssa was a state finalist and placed as the 2nd Runner Up for the National American Miss Nevada Elite! COMMITTEE NEWS PATROL COMMITTEE

ELECTION COMMITTEE UPDATE

Looking for a few good men and women

By Elaine Jefferson

Sun City Aliante is patrolled by a few good men and women of the community. The men and women are residents of the community and take pride in what they have lived for and earned. They are also volunteers. SCAL volunteers for community Patrol go through a North Las Vegas Police background check. Once cleared, they are familiarized with the Policies and Procedures manual. The primary mission of the Sun City Aliante Patrol is to provide a presence in the community to deter and discourage crime within the community of Sun City Aliante. This is accomplished through patrolling the streets of the community to establish a VISUAL DETERRENT. The Association cannot and does not warrant or promise a crime-free community. It is the responsibility of each homeowner and resident to take all appropriate and necessary steps to protect and preserve the safety of the occupants of their homes and property. By adopting these Patrol Policies and Procedures, the Association does not intend to divest owners of their responsibilities or to assume responsibility for the health and safety of the owners or residents or to protect their property. With that said, residents who patrol their own community recognize when they see... • “Ma Kettle” walking without “Pa Kettle,” • CUJO on an unauthorized walk without supervision. • Sissy's smart car now parked on the front lawn, • Gary's garage door off track or an abandoned golf cart left on sidewalk. • Disoriented bats and bees swarming the area in attempts to get away from fireworks. • Dog walker down at Pebble Park with FIFI hot stepping the pebbles in the park unable to get owner up or out. These anomalies would raise an eyebrow for a resident who is familiar with their neighbors, but not so much to the paid security or the local NLVPD, who both have a wider scope of “protect and serve” to a much larger community of which SCAL is included but not exclusive. Our volunteer members dedicate their time and service to the diligent observation and reporting of recognized trouble spots, areas of concern, and things that just don't look right. The two-hour tour of patrol for each volunteer is usually enough time for the community streets to be patrolled absent of any unusual event.

PREPARING FOR NEXT YEAR'S BOARD ELECTION The Election Committee is already working to enhance next year's Board of Director's election process by improving communication, accessibility, and opportunities for residents to become informed before casting their votes. To help residents better evaluate each candidate, the Election Committee will recommend, with the approval of the HOA Board of Directors, the use of a large-screen video presentation during the Candidate Forum. This enhancement would allow every attendee to clearly see each candidate while they are speaking, regardless of where they are seated. The Committee is also recommending upgraded wearable headsets to improve audio quality and to make it easier for residents to hear the candidates and follow the discussion throughout the forum. Another proposed enhancement is a post-forum Candidate Meet-andGreet. Following the formal Candidate Forum, each candidate would be seated at an individual round table, allowing residents to visit with candidates one-on-one or in small groups. This informal setting would provide an opportunity for residents to ask additional questions, discuss issues of personal interest, and gain a better understanding of each candidate's qualifications and priorities. In addition to these proposed improvements, the Election Committee is currently reviewing and updating both the Election Committee Guidelines and the Candidate Guidelines. These updates are intended to provide greater clarity, consistency, and transparency throughout the election process while ensuring that all candidates receive fair and equal treatment. The Election Committee remains committed to conducting a fair, transparent, and well-organized election. We appreciate the continued support of our residents and the HOA Board of Directors as we work to strengthen the election process and encourage informed participation by our community. Respectfully submitted, David Hollander Chairman, Election Committee

The community patrol car is equipped with light bar atop the vehicle, dash cam inside the vehicle, and a phone. The uniformed volunteer outfitted with patrol shirt, community patrol ID with lanyard and optional hat, creates a visual display observe and report. Two operative words of Volunteer community patrol…OBSERVE and REPORT. Residents of SCAL won't you be a volunteer for community Patrol? Try it you just may like it!! Hello Residents of Sun City Aliante, My name is Judy Sawitski and my partner in crime is Tina Johnson (no pun intended). We are the Neighborhood Watch Coordinators. Our focus is . . . . Keeping Sun City Aliante Safe: A guide to Block Vigilance • Why a Neighborhood Watch? Safety is a shared responsibility. The Neighborhood Watch acts as extra “eyes and ears” for the North Las Vegas Police Department. What to watch for? Residents should be familiar with normal neighborhood activity so abnormal activity can easily be spotted. • How do you respond when something is suspicious? Observe first and note exact details. Call 911 for crimes in progress or life-threatening emergencies. Call 702-633-9111 for non-emergencies such as suspicious persons. • What are some everyday habits to reduce crime? Lock all doors, windows and garage door every night. Keep porch and coach lights on from dusk to dawn. Suspend newspaper when traveling. • What are the next steps? We invite all residents to get involved. Attend a Neighborhood Watch meeting. Learn how to become a Neighborhood Participant or Block Captain. PET PAW PRINTS PUMPKIN – QUEEN OF THE HOUSE Meet our 6-year-old domestic short hair cat, Pumpkin. During the Covid year of 2020, Cindy and I went out seeking a pet at the local SPCA in Buffalo, NY (which is where we are from). There were many kittens within the facility but we happened to stumble across this cutie who was in isolation due to a respiratory infection. We asked what had happened and staff member said she was left abandoned at their doorstep and the stress had caused the infection. We immediately wanted to take her home; so, after a couple of days of medicine and treatment they released her to us. Over the past years Pumpkin has made herself queen of our home and supervisor of all tasks that we do. She can be seen overlooking us from her perch on top of the refrigerator as we prep our meals or on top of the washer and dryer as they operate. She will sit attentively in the corner of the room as we clean her litter or vacuum the house.

Make the Indoors More Inviting A cat who finds the house boring will scratch at the door to get back out into danger, so the indoor half of the day has to earn its keep. Keep the blinds drawn on the sunny side of the house, run a fan or the air conditioning, and give your kitty a few cool surfaces to stretch out on. Tile, a spot in the shade near a vent, and a lightly dampened towel on a hot afternoon will all help regulate their temperature down.

Pumpkin's favorite past time is sitting in the back yard in her dog cage with us and watching the birds and leaves move around. She will eventually just relax and often times fall asleep once she realizes all is well within her kingdom. Yes, I must admit she does rule the roost, but what loveable animal doesn't. She is not always the most affectionate cat and only allows you to pet her on her own terms, but when she wants attention, she will definitely let you know. Even though she has a color pattern of a cow, she is our Pumpkin. ~Joe and Cindy Ghosen

PET HEATH & FITNESS KEEPING YOUR CAT SAFE IN 110 DEGREE HEAT IN THE VALLEY

By Kelly Decolati

So far, I've been writing about dogs in these articles. But I'm also a cat owner, and I've been asked for my advice to cat owners who want to give their pets the best of both indoor and outdoor worlds despite the summer risks we have here in the valley. Cats are tricksters because they can stroll in from the outdoors looking perfectly content and yet already be in real trouble. Cats are experts at hiding distress, and in a valley where the afternoon sun pushes well past 110 degrees, that talent works against them (and against you!). If you share your home with an indoor-outdoor cat, the outdoor half of that arrangement is the part that needs your attention all summer long. Manage the outdoor hours, not the whole day The brightest sunlit hours between midmorning and early evening are the most dangerous ones. That's when your cat should be inside. Let your kitty have their early mornings and cooler evenings in the yard, but bring them in before the heat builds. Cats are smart and many of them will make that call on their own, especially if they learn that the good spot by the tile floor is waiting for them, so I encourage you to make coming indoors easy and rewarding.

When outside, cats need good options for shade and water. A patch of dirt under a bush heats up along with everything else. If your cat has a favorite lounging area that bakes in the afternoon sun, block their access to it during those hours and steer them somewhere cooler. Look for a shaded, breezy spot and set up a bowl of fresh water nearby that gets refilled often.

Cats are notoriously light water drinkers who descended from desert animals and never developed a strong thirst drive. Water matters more than most people realize. Put out several bowls in different rooms and refresh them daily. If water drinking is particularly challenging for your kitty, consider getting a pet fountain since many cats drink more from moving water. Wet food adds moisture too, and in the deep summer that extra fluid does your cat a quiet favor. Learn Overheating Signs and Act Fast For cats, heatstroke risk begins with internal temperatures above 104° and severe organ damage occurs above 106°. Unless you know how to check that by hand, your best bet will be to watch their behavior instead. Panting is the sign people miss most, because panting means something very different in a cat than it does in a dog. Cats rarely pant, so open-mouthed breathing that doesn't settle quickly after they cool off is a genuine emergency. Along with panting, watch for heavy drooling, stumbling, unusual lethargy, and gums that look bright red rather than a healthy pink. If you see these, move them to a cool room right away and press a towel dampened with cool (never cold) water against their belly, paws, and neck. Then call your vet immediately, even if they seem to bounce back. Internal organ damage from overheating doesn't always show on the surface. A Perfect Vegas Kitty Summer Plenty of indoor-outdoor cats, my own included, sail through Las Vegas summers in perfect health. Mostly, their owners share the same habit: they treat outdoor access as a morning-and-evening privilege instead of an allday one. They also make indoor kitty spaces that are genuinely pleasant places to wait out the worst of the afternoon sun. Your cat doesn't know that August in this valley is different from August anywhere else on earth. As their owner, it's your job to manage that for them. Give your kitty outdoor freedom for the coolest hours, bring them into comfortable spaces for the hottest hours, and give plenty of fresh water in between. Do that and your kitty will spend the summer content. Purrrr. If you'd like help building a summer routine that fits your cat and your home, you can reach me at kelly@wayofthewoof.com.

CORNHOLE Hello, from the Cornhole Club. Please join us for some fun throwing bags. All players welcome ~ no experience is needed.

As a young child, during a time of war and upheaval, she was sent alone by ship to the United States. She was only about five years old. Like so many immigrant stories, her arrival did not mark the end of hardship. Life was difficult, but she persevered, eventually raising a daughter and passing along one of the traditions that connected her to the country she had left behind—the art of decorating Pysanky eggs. Her grandson grew up learning that tradition from his mother. Those colorful eggs became far more than seasonal decorations. They were tangible reminders of family, heritage, and resilience. Years later, disaster struck again. A fire completely destroyed his home. As he described those frightening moments, he recalled insisting on going back inside despite his wife's pleas not to. There were two things he could not bear to lose: the last two Pysanky eggs made by his mother. He rescued them. That story gave entirely new meaning to the glass artwork before me. His piece is not simply a reproduction of an egg. It is the latest chapter in a family's history. Using stained and fused glass, he transformed an object that is inherently fragile into something more enduring while faithfully preserving its intricate beauty. The original eggs remain treasured family heirlooms; the glass artwork allows their story to be shared in a new form. Artists often speak of preserving memories through their work. In this case, the artwork preserves much more. It honors a grandmother's courage, a mother's gift of tradition, and a grandson's determination that those memories would not be lost.

We meet Tuesday mornings at 8 a.m. to beat the heat. Just bring water. Bags and boards are provided. We have friendly games and a chance to meet neighbors. For more information, please call Becky Anderson at 702-271-1014 or rsa2373@gmail.com. ~ Cornhole Club

GLASS CRAFTERS MORE THAN A WORK OF ART Usually our story begins and ends with the finished piece itself. This month, however, the artwork is only the beginning. Gary Schall's latest glass art immediately caught my attention… It was unlike anything I had seen before—a delicate combination of stained and fused glass which reminded me of the intricate designs found on traditional Ukrainian Pysanky eggs. Curious, I asked the artist about it.

Looking at the finished piece, I no longer saw only exceptional craftsmanship. I saw the remarkable journey of a family's heritage carried across generations—proof that while objects may be fragile, the stories they hold can endure.

My guess was correct. The piece was his interpretation of one of only two Pysanky eggs that had been created by his mother. Those eggs were more than family heirlooms. They represented a history that stretched back generations to Ukraine, where his grandmother spent the first years of her life. WWW.SUNCITYALIANTE.ORG

VETERAN'S CLUB Veterans Club Donates American Flag to AM/PM

SILVER NEEDLES AND THREADS

The Veterans Club is proud to announce the donation of a new American flag to the local AM/PM convenience store as a symbol of patriotism, community pride, and respect for those who have served our nation.

I was trying to find something special to write about this month, when one of our members, Holly Claghorn cleaned out her crochet closet and donated a number of items. Among the things that were donated were nine large, crocheted blankets and some lap blankets. The large blankets alone, with some of the lap blankets, were donated to Fisher House which is a place where out of town VA Hospital patients' families stay. In August, we will get donations together for The Foster Children of Clark County. Anyone interested in Knitting, Crocheting, or Needle Crafts please join us. We are willing to teach you if you don't already know how. The Forget-Me-Knots Meet in the Socal Hall every Monday the center is open. We meet from 1 to 4 p.m. We hope to see you there. For more information, please call Collette Stickney at 702 373-2163 or Mady Shapiro at 702 399-5347. ~ Collette Stickney

Veteran's Club Board member Scott Erickson presents a new U.S. flag to the manager of the convenience store.

This donation reflects the Club's ongoing commitment to honoring our country's values while strengthening partnerships with local businesses that proudly display the American flag. By working together, we help ensure that our nation's flag remains a visible reminder of the freedoms we enjoy and the sacrifices made by our veterans and active-duty military. The Veterans Club extends its sincere appreciation to the management and staff of AM/PM for their support of our community and for proudly flying the Stars and Stripes. We look forward to continuing our mission of promoting patriotism and civic pride throughout our neighborhood. "One flag can inspire a community, honor our veterans, and remind us all of the values that unite us.” FLASH: September Vets meeting; Vista Room, Tuesday, September 15 at 6 p.m. Discussion/review/amend/approve alternative flag flying proposal for SCA community. AN INTRODUCTION TO AI AND YOUR PRIVACY

By George Miranda

balances, monthly income, and bank names. In the moment, none of that feels like oversharing because the AI is responsive and the chat feels private. The problem is that it isn't. Would you give those details to a helpful stranger in a public place where someone could be eavesdropping? If you wouldn't say that out loud in a crowded coffee shop, don't say it to AI either.

When first getting started with AI, the most common question I hear from folks is some variation of: “Is this thing spying on me?” Fair question. And the answer is more nuanced than a straight up yes or no. That's a big topic to unpack, so we'll do it in chunks throughout this series. For now, let's start with the biggest privacy risk: what you voluntarily type in. The biggest risk isn't hackers or sophisticated surveillance. The most common reason things go wrong is that people type things in voluntarily, without stopping to think about where that information goes or how it gets used. Once AI chatbots start talking to you, it almost feels natural to overshare. But what happens when you do? When you type something into a chatbot like Claude or ChatGPT, your words travel to that company's servers, get processed, and generate a response. Depending on which tool you're using and whether you have a free or paid account, that conversation may also get stored, and in some cases, used to help train future versions of the AI. Most major AI companies are transparent about this in their privacy policies, but rarely are those policies written in plain English. Assume that what you typed is being retained somewhere, rather than disappearing the moment you close the window. If you remember that, the single most useful rule I can give you should stick: Don't tell an AI chatbot anything that you wouldn't say to a helpful stranger in a public place. That stranger might be trustworthy and genuinely trying to help, but you still wouldn't give them your Social Security number, bank account details, passwords, or medical history. That same instinct applies to AI. Those tools are genuinely useful for a wide range of everyday tasks, but none of those tasks should require you to share highly sensitive information. Yet, time and again, this trips up even the most sophisticated AI users. Voluntary oversharing tends to happen in small, wellintentioned ways. Someone wants help understanding a medical bill, so they type in their full name, their doctor's name, their diagnosis, and their insurance details because sharing that context seems helpful. Let's say you want to write a letter to a difficult neighbor, so you include their home address, the neighbor's full name, and a detailed account of a personal dispute. Or maybe you want advice about a financial decision, so you share your account WWW.SUNCITYALIANTE.ORG

If an AI tool ever asks you for any of the following things directly, that's a big red flag: • Social Security numbers or Medicare Ids • Bank account or credit card numbers • Passwords, security question answers, or combined personal details (e.g. full name paired with your home address and date of birth) Legitimate AI assistants don't need this information to help you write a letter, look up a recipe, or explain a news story. If you have a task that requires these for any reason, simply tell the AI: “I will use a placeholder for these identifying details and fill them out myself after we're done.” Another distinction worth understanding is the difference between using free and paid versions of AI tools. Many free accounts use your conversations to help improve their AI models. That means a human reviewer or automated system may look at what you shared. Paid subscriptions often include stronger privacy protections, like options to turn off conversation history or to opt out of having your data used for training. If you plan to use these tools regularly, it's worth spending a few minutes in the settings menu of whichever tool you choose. Look for privacy controls, and you'll typically find a plain language summary of what the company commits to for the type of account you have. Voice assistants are a separate but related topic. Devices like Amazon's Alexa or Apple's Siri work somewhat differently from text-based chatbots, but the same core principle applies. There's even more nuance around whether or not these devices are always listening to you (again, it's not a flat out yes or no). Let me know if you'd like me to unpack that in a future article. For now, I'll just say some of these devices have a physical mute button to skew that further toward “no.” The reassurance I want to leave you with is that using AI tools carefully doesn't mean you need to become a cybersecurity expert. Mostly, it requires the same common sense you're already applying to other parts of your life. You don't give out account numbers to someone who calls you unexpectedly. You don't leave your bank statements on restaurant tables. Use those same instincts here, and your journey with AI won't be very risky. Hopefully, you've already tried some of the basic questions I wrote about in the last article. In the next article, we'll get more of an introduction to what AI chatbots can and can't do, what questions work well, and what to do when the answers you get don't seem quite right. TECHNOLOGY Continued from page 48 For now, let's start with a solid foundation: be thoughtful about what you share, take a minute to understand the privacy settings of any tool you choose, and remember to come at this with equal parts of caution and curiosity. You don't have to choose, curiosity and caution work best together. Editor's Note: George Miranda is the Vice President of Marketing for Insight Finder AI. He has vast experience in marketing AI solutions and a deep understanding of how AI systems works. He recently authored two books; the second is about AI systems.
