I know that many of you are not familiar with what actions the Board takes on behalf of your community, but you can, and should, make it a point to learn how your Board works and the decisions we make to improve your lifestyle. It is an easy task, just put on your calendars to attend our meeting the second Wednesday of every month. You can voice your opinion on any agenda item and at the end of each meeting, your voice will be heard on anything that is on your mind regarding your community. To keep you aware of upcoming events, we are once again working with the Clark County Election Department to offer a voting site for the upcoming elections conveniently in our Social Hall. Early voting for the primary election will be held on June 2 and 3 with the primary held on June 14. In addition, early voting for the general election will be October 27 and 28 with the general election held on November 8. Lastly, as recent eBlasts have announced, the First Service 2021 Peer award was presented to Debbie Kent as the Outstanding Customer Service spotlight award winner. It is no surprise because Debbie is a tireless worker who organizes internal and external events for all Sun City residents. Her ability to decorate for our events is unmistakably Debbie. One look is everything Debbie… Beautiful, colorful, imaginative, and stunning in its simplicity. Thank you, Debbie, for your hard work and bringing so much enjoyment to all of us. We are very fortunate to have your talent and kindness grace everything you do. Respectfully submitted, Warren M. Geller President, Sun City Board of Directors

The Meaning of May
Mark S. Towers
The month of May has arrived! Named in honor of Maia, the Greek goddess of fertility; May is derived from Maiores, which means elders in Latin. The Romans held the festival of Bona Dea, the “Good Goddess,” which was celebrated on May 1. Since 1928 May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii. The Lily of the Valley is the flower of May; the emerald is the birthstone of May. May is about growing, nurturing, and springtime.
In Nevada, May is Archeological Awareness and Historical Preservation month and Tule Springs, and the Springs Preserve are recognized for their historical and archeological importance.

Springs Preserve Las Vegas, located in southern Nevada, showcases 180 acres of rich cultural and biological resources of the Big Springs Archaeological District. This area, which is considered to be the birthplace of the City of Las Vegas, offers nature trails and a stunning desert botanical garden. Many archaeological discoveries have been made in this area, including a Pueblo Indian pit house, one of the last undisturbed spring mounds, pottery, arrowheads, and other artifacts as well as historic buildings and infrastructure from southern Nevada's first water system. In the spirit of May, may we grow, nurture, and enjoy. It is a great place to for an outing. At your service, Mark S. Towers, ADV DCAL Director, Sun City Aliante Board of Directors

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am very excited to invite you to our Award Celebration on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Vista Room of the Sun City Aliante Community Center. The Community Associations Institute (CAI) has once again awarded Sun City Aliante as the Southern Nevada Outstanding Large Association of the Year for 2021. This prestigious award, which is considered the equivalent of the “CAI Oscar,” was presented at the annual CAI Dinner Gala held at the Red Rock Resort and Casino on Friday, March 15, 2022.
WE ARE...
This year the Budget Workshop will be held on May 4, 2022, at 10 a.m. in the Vista Room of the Community Center. The Workshop is open to all homeowners. The next step in the process is the adoption of the Budget by the Board at the May 11 meeting of the Board of Directors. In late May, a summary of the Operating, Reserve and Capitalization Budgets will be mailed to all homeowners. The last step in the process is the Budget Ratification Meeting when homeowners can consider ratification of the Budget. The Budget shall automatically become effective unless disapproved at the meeting by 67 percent of the homeowners. The Budget Ratification Meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 8, at 9:45 a.m. in the Vista Room in the Community Center prior to the Board of Directors meeting. This meeting is open to all Sun City Aliante homeowners. If the budget is adopted and ratified, it will be effective July 1, 2021.
This is the fourth consecutive year that CAI nominated Sun City Aliante for the award. Most recently, we won the award in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, we were again nominated for the award.
Stay safe and enjoy the warmer weather.
In addition, Warren Geller, President of the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors, and I, were nominated by CAI respectively as Board Member of the Year and Onsite Manager of the Year for the second consecutive year.

COMMUNITY STANDARDS Hello Residents, Welcome to Sun City Aliante! What a perfect time to have settled in our community as we will celebrate winning the Outstanding Large-Scale Association in Southern Nevada for the fourth time. The party will be on May 3, and it will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be refreshments and a few surprises. I look forward to welcoming our seasoned residents as well as many new faces. This is a great time to meet new friends and connect with Board members and staff. So, put on a friendly smile and celebrate with us. I know one of the reasons residents chose to call this community their home is the wonderful Community Center the Association offers. It has a stunning view of the golf course and landscape residents enjoy while sitting with friends. The fitness and pool area are great for exercise. Therefore, I understand why residents would be encouraged to bring guests and visitors to show it off. You should be proud and delighted to use it. However, I want to remind you that the Community Center has rules and conditions in place. Please read over the Rules and Regulations available on the website to be informed. www.suncityaliante.org Many of our residents are very respectful, thoughtful, and considerate of others – which I absolutely appreciate. Those who do not comply are not necessarily recalcitrant people, but they may just be unaware of the rules. For example, presentation of a Membership Card is required for access to the Community Center and use of all Association facilities. Please see Carol Garbarino, Customer Service Coordinator, for any questions you may have about obtaining a card. Friendly reminder: if you like to ride a bicycle, please be careful when you ride on the streets. We live in a community with seniors who may not be as quick to react to bicyclists who may suddenly appear around the corner. Please wear protective head gear at all times, and when riding at night, do not forget to wear something that reflects light. Please refrain from circling around the Community Center parking lot. Stay safe and please be considerate of pedestrians as well. Please find an insert enclosed which provides information about revised regulations on displaying political signs on your property. Thank you in advance for reviewing this regulation before we enter the 2022 Primary Election season. If you plan to change anything on the outside of your home, please remember, you must have written prior approval of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). This means approval is needed for patios, pools, spas, exterior painting, replacement of trees and plants, fences, gates, walls, solar panels, security doors and wall art. Do not make an investment in anything on the outside of your home, until you have ARC approval. It could cost you more if you have to remove it due to no approval If you have any questions, please contact me at 702-638-5006 or email AssistantManager@suncityaliante.us. Have a fantastic month! MEET THE NEW MEMBERS OF OUR MAINTENANCE STAFF Francisco Cheves Amaya moved from El Salvador to Las Vegas in 1980. He quickly adjusted to his new environment where he gained a wealth of experience. He started at the Circus Circus Hotel & Casino as a bus boy and rapidly advanced to become a cook. For 35 years, he cooked in many other casinos on and off The Strip, including The Dunes, Bourbon Street and Sam's Town. “I am so proud I went to culinary school. I can cook everything including, Italian, Chinese, New Orleans style, whatever you want,” Francesco said. He left the casinos to join the Sunrise Hospital, and later, University Medical Center (UMC), as a cook and worked for the last 30 years until he retired. He met his wife, Maybelline, who hails from the Philippines, when she worked as a nurse at UMC. They have been married 40 years. It wasn't long after he retired, when Francesco decided to look for a part-time job close to home. Coincidentally, his longtime friend, Jose Vargas, who was already on our Maintenance Team, suggested he apply for a part-time position at Sun City Aliante… and the rest is history. “I was bored, when I had the opportunity to work part-time, three to five days a week sometimes, I accepted,” said Francisco. “I have only been working six months and I have a lot of friends. It is like having a family working here. I like to speak with the residents. I really feel-good working here.”
Nathaniel Griffin, also called Nate, moved to Las Vegas nine years ago from San Bernardino, California in search of new opportunities. After he graduated from San Bernardino High School, he attended San Bernadino College, where he studied 12 different trades including engineering, technology, automobile, janitorial and more. He had a career in janitorial maintenance for 24 years before he joined Sun City Aliante. “I am so glad I came here; I have been welcomed since day one,” said Nathaniel. “I like working with the staff and our residents. It is a very welcoming environment, just like being part of family. “ We were very lucky to get Nathaniel. “I had a job interview with ABM,” Nathaniel said. “Then Juan called me the day I was hired to start at ABM. He offered me the job with First Service. In the end, I chose to accept Juan's offer. I am so glad I picked Sun City Aliante. It is a great place to work and live.” Nathaniel said he is very glad he moved to Las Vegas for a lot of reasons. “I have enjoyed accomplishments in investing in property and teaching my siblings to be independent and work hard. It was a big change coming to Las Vegas versus California. Las Vegas is a great location for me. “ In his free time, he really enjoys being with family. “I am really a homebody, and I love it. My free time is spent with my grandchildren, nieces and nephews. I came from a family of 14 with seven boys and seven girls. I am happy that some of my family members have followed me to Las Vegas.”

2022 PRIMARY & GENERAL ELECTION For your convenience, the Primary and General Election dates to vote in your LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL ELECTIONS were scheduled at the Sun City Aliante Community Center in the Social Hall on the following dates. PRIMARY ELECTION Early Voting - Thursday, June 2 and Friday, June 3, 2022 Primary Election - Tuesday, June 14, 2022 GENERAL ELECTION Early Voting - Thursday, October 27 and Friday, October 28, 2022 General Election Day - Tuesday, November 8, 2022 WHY SHOULD YOU VOTE? Even if you went to a polling location and only voted for one person, it will be counted. By law your vote has to be counted. Your ballot cannot be skipped or ignored otherwise it is unconstitutional. Sometimes elections can come down to a small number of votes which greatly affects how your city, state, and nation are run. Your vote counts, vote! Here some important ways voting directly affect you: It's Your Right. People have died defending this right. Don't take it for granted! Not voting is giving up your voice. Elections are decided by the people who go out and vote. Take some time and learn about the measures and the candidates. If you don't vote, someone else will make the decision for you. Your power is in your vote. The Amount of Money Allocated Your Region. This money can be used for education, youth programs, healthcare, veterans, creating jobs, the environment, etc. How Your Taxes Will Be Spent. Take an active role and find out if your candidate shares your views and will spend your money wisely. Your Healthcare. Your vote grants the governor, legislators, and Congress the right to take action and pass or reject laws that will determine your access to health care. Social Security. - Elected officials decide how much payroll tax is paid, your Medicare services and payments, cost of living increases, and benefit schedules for your Social Security pension. Safety of Your Neighborhood. Elected officials and judges make day to day decisions on laws that will affect your community, law enforcement, crime prevention, traffic patterns, and where to build schools, parks, and recreational places. Improving Your Highways. Take an active role deciding what highways are needed, what public transit to support and how the bill will be paid. Vote to elect people who will do something to fix the problems we face. An opportunity for change. Support the candidates and ballot measures that can help your community, state, and even the nation for the greater good. Make your voice heard in these elections. Communities are made up of friends, loved ones, and neighbors. Some may not know how important voting is, while others don't have the privilege. Make the decision to vote for yourself and those around you. Make sure your voice is heard - vote! (Source: Excerpts from https://actnow.org)

NEIGHBORHOOD NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MONTHLY BULLETIN: NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
During the first quarter of 2022, we had three home break-ins. That may not sound like a lot, but even one is too many. There are a few things that we can do to make our homes and the Sun City Aliante community safer and hopefully crime free. Let us start with our homes. A quality security door is a great start. You can find lesser quality, less expensive doors, but a better rated door is best. A light duty door can be pried open with little effort. An outdoor camera system is a very good deterrent. Be sure to purchase a camera with a doorbell that rings on your phone; so, you can talk to a person without opening the door. The advantage is you can speak directly to someone even if you are not at home. A safety tip worth repeating is, if someone is at your door, acknowledge that you are home. If that person is a burglar and thinks no one is home, they may try to break-in. There are a few things that we, as good neighbors, should do to protect our homes and our community. First, when leaving your home, check your surroundings. Look around… is there a person or persons sitting in a parked car or driving slowly and watching, waiting for someone to leave home? On your way out, as you leave your block, (you know your block better than anyone) you will know if something is not right. If something looks strange or out of place, drive back around the block and see if that car or person is now in front of your home. Other things to be aware of are reports of someone or a group of people going around the community looking for open garage doors or cars parked on the street or driveway. In the early mornings, it has been reported that a group of four people have been checking the handles of cars parked outside. Even if your car is locked, please remember to never leave anything of value in your car and be sure to take your garage door opener in the house with you. The only time a garage door should be open is when you are in your car coming or going. An open garage door during the day or night is always an open target. If your home or car has been broken into, please call the North Las Vegas Police Department and file a report. Also, please contact our Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, Jim Blossey and let him know what took place. DATE Change: Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Sun City Aliante Home Safety and Health Expo originally scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 2022, has been postponed until later date in the year. Is your vehicle a target for a catalytic converter theft?
Is your vehicle a target for a catalytic converter theft? Although any vehicle can be a target for catalytic converter thieves, it seems high ground clearance vehicles are better prospects because of easier access. Vehicles such as pickup trucks, Jeeps, SUV's, RAV4's and similar vehicles are favorite targets. A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission device that converts toxic gases in the exhaust system for a cleaner exhaust. The converter is attached to the exhaust system and is about the size of a loaf of bread. Money is the main reason catalytic converters are stolen. They contain precious metals that are worth money when sold by the ounce. Thieves can get hundreds of dollars when they sell a stolen converter. Since the theft of catalytic converters are random crimes of opportunity, homeowners can take the following action to deter this type of theft. You can mark the converter by etching the vehicle serial number on the unit, spray paint it with heat resistant bright spray paint, or attach locking cables or a bolted-on steel plate. According to the police, junk yards or scrap yards can be charged with possession of property for accepting painted catalytic converters. Continue on page 16

COMMITTEE NEWS When you are at home be aware if a vehicle pulls up to the curb near your parked vehicle. Thieves will quickly “case” the area; so, there are no witnesses. The actual theft only takes a about a minute as the thief goes under your vehicle and uses a battery-operated saw to cut the converter from your muffler system. If you park on your driveway, cameras and motion activated lights are good deterrents for this type of crime. For information regarding the Sun City Aliante Patrol, contact the Patrol Chairman Phil Zanello at zp9@aol.com or 702-460-9582.

Mother's Day gives people a special opportunity to show their gratitude to the moms, stepmoms, grandmas, aunts, and other maternal figures in their lives. Some people like to celebrate by going all out with Mother's Day gifts, while other families get together for a Mother's Day brunch or dinner. And even those with some geographical distance can still celebrate their mom by sending a card and celebrating virtually. Whether you're celebrating in person or from a distance, you can share these fun Mother's Day facts with everyone on May 8 this year. • Mother's Day is always the second Sunday in May, which means it's on a different date each year. This year it is on Sunday, May 8, 2022. •
•

According to a 2021 YouGov poll, American mothers' top picks for Mother's Day gifts were a card, flowers, and/or a special experience with their family. Mother's Day is a pretty popular day to ditch the kitchen and eat out. Even during the pandemic, Mother's Day was a big one for restaurants: In 2020, consumer spending at restaurants soared 103 percent on Mother's Day Sunday and 63 percent on Saturday, compared to average daily revenue throughout the coronavirus pandemic, according to data from Womply. The average age for first time mothers has gone up over the last two decades. According to the CDC, In 2000, the average age has risen from 24.9 years old to 27.1 in 2020. Ancient myths allude to the fact that Greeks and Romans celebrated Mother's Day by honoring the goddess Cybele, personifying Mother Earth (Gaia) and the goddess of fertility, and Rhea, mother of the Gods. The current version of Mother's Day was started by Anna Jarvis in the early 1900s, according to Today. Jarvis got Congress to
recognize the holiday, founded the Mother's Day International Association and even trademarked the phrases "Mother's Day" and "second Sunday in May." Jarvis was inspired by her own mother, who had called for "Mothers Work Days" to improve conditions for soldiers on both sides during the Civil War. •
President Woodrow Wilson made mother's day an official holiday in 1914.
•
"The traditional Mother's Day gift is a single carnation. A study, conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, concluded flowers affect human behavior, making people feel more compassionate toward others and happier when fresh-cut blooms are around.
•
Other countries celebrate their own versions of Mother's Day. The UK has Mothering Sunday which is observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Spain and Portugal celebrate December 8 by honoring the Virgin Mary and their own moms.
•
A Reuter's found Mother's Day is the most popular day for phone calls. Verizon reported a 13 percent increase on Mother's Day 2020.
•
In 2021, the National Retail Federation predicted Americans would spend over $28 billion in Mother's Day gifts.
•
According to research from Salary.com, stay-at-home moms should, in theory, make $162,581 based on the fact that a mother's job is never done. It's a 24/7,365-day commitment.

According to Hallmark, about 113 million cards are exchanged every year, Mother's day is the third-largest card-sending holiday.

CERAMICS CLUB
Chris Rohrer and Jill Ramsey proudly display the end product of their joint efforts which applied both the stained and fused glass processes.
SENIORS WITH WARM HEARTS The Seniors with Warm Hearts would like to thank the members of the community who were so generous by participating in their recent raffle at the Spring Arts & Crafts Show. The monies raised will help the group support future charitable projects as the year moves forward. The members would also like to thank those who donated to their recent collection for the Ukrainian refugees. They were able to raise $1005.00, which was sent directly to the two charities supporting Ukrainian refugees: World Central Kitchen, Inc., and Global Empowerment Mission. These organizations will provide direct assistance to the displaced Ukrainian people. Members of their group also met recently to put together handmade Mother's Day cards for the children of SAFE House to give to their moms for Mother's Day. It is the member's hope that this simple gesture will put smiles on the children's faces as well as their moms.
Did you know that the Ceramics Club is a great way to meet your neighbors in Sun City Aliante while having a good time being creative? No experience is needed. It does not matter if you have never participated in ceramics; or, if you want to revisit a fun hobby that you used to enjoy.
The group's next meeting will be on Thursday, May 5, when they will wrap up their annual food drive by sorting and distributing the items donated to assist Helping Hands of Vegas Valley, Serving Our Kids Foundation and Street Teens.
New members are always welcome, and they have knowledgeable instructors who are ready to assist you if needed. The club also offers finished items for purchase if you are interested. The club meets from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
New members are always welcome. Stop by at our meeting and see what they have planned.
For any questions or more information regarding the club, please contact President, Jill Ernest, at 702-954-6299 or Vice President, Denise Simon, at 914-907-6899.
For more information about any of the organizations they support or about joining the group, contact Carol Hoyt at 702-647-1289 or Karen Nutto at 201-787-9391.
GLASSCRAFTERS
Glass Crafters is expanding. Starting in May, the Glass Crafters will offer stained glass and fused glass sessions. They will meet on the first and third Wednesday of the month for fused glass and the second and fourth Wednesday for stained glass.
The photo, included in this article, shows the results of the combining efforts using both stained and fused glass methods. Each fused piece was done by a different person in the fused glass group, and Chris Rohrer worked his stained-glass magic and created this attractive hanging piece, which is available for sale. For more information, please contact Jill Ramsey at 702-642-8716 and cpigs@aol.com Chris Rohrer at crohrer1956@icloud.com

TECHNOLOGY CLUB On Thursday April 7, over 35 attendees participated in a discussion of how to “Cut the Cable Cord” using streaming services over the internet. This topic has been the most popular topic and has now been presented three times to large groups of residents. Qung Go led the discussion with an actual case study of “Cutting the Cord.” This was moving from DIRECTV to using a combination of video streaming services (DIRECTV Now, Netflix, Amazon, Price, and Pluto) to lower cost and yet have similar content. Savings of over $300 per year were estimated. The group also discussed the prerequisites for cutting the cable: good internet connection; Roku Box or Amazon Fire Stick; and a good selection of video streaming services. YouTube TV appears to be an increasingly popular streaming service (which may match well with Cox, Dish, and DIRECTV) as well as the free Pluto streaming service. Of course the choice of streaming services must match your content choices and budget. After years of having to choose between only Cox, DIRECTV, Dish, and CenturyLink, residents now have the opportunity to reduce cable tv expenditures by replacing with video streaming services at much lower prices. Residents are encouraged to research and compare these services with their current cable supplier. Please join the next meeting on Thursday, May 5 when the topic will be “Tips on Using the iPhone and PC.”
UKULELE STRUMMERS Happy May from Sun City Aliante Ukulele Strummers! The Ukulele Strummers continue to have a blast playing ukulele together every Sunday afternoon. Several new and experienced strummers joined recently; so, it is a great time to start wherever you are in your ukulele journey. Our beginners' class is learning new chords and new music. The advanced class has been learning barred chords and chucking. The advanced class is also having fun learning some genuine Hawaiian music thanks to members from Hawaii. As usual we are continuing to offer three classes every Sunday and all classes have room for more Ukulele Strummers: Basic Ukulele: noon-12:30 p.m.: For students who have never played. Beginning Ukulele: 12:30 - 1:25 p.m.: For students who are just starting to play. Advanced Ukulele: 1:30-2:30 pm. - For intermediate players who have attended ukulele classes and know ten or more basic chords. We will learn one or two new songs a week, play through songs we know, and learn some special strumming techniques. We use Pete McCarty's August 2021 free book of 400 songs for most of our music. It is located at this link: https://peteymack2.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/5/4/135404457/august_2021 .pdf If you are interested in joining us stop by a class or give me a call. Happy Strumming! As we welcome in the month of May, it is so beautiful to still see snow still up on Mount Charleston, and within our community of Sun City Aliante, trees are still sprouting new leaves and flowers around the community welcoming in another season of Spring with Summer starting to emerge around the corner. We celebrate Mother's Day, and welcome in Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day. The Veterans Club will be putting up our American Flags to remember Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day. The date for Flags Up are from May 21st through June 4th. We welcome everyone who wishes to Volunteer for this event. We usually meet at 6:30 in the morning in the parking lot outside of the Community Center. We collaborate with our great Scouts. Some Scouts are just short of becoming Eagle Scouts. These are truly remarkable young people. On a sad note, I want to address two members of the Veterans Club who recently passed in our community here in Sun City Aliante. Mr. John Taylor and Mr. Owen Egge. Both Veterans meant a great deal to the Veterans Club and to the Community of Sun City Aliante. Mr. John Taylor who retired from the United States Air Force served his country honorably. John was a true patriot and was involved in our Club for several years and volunteered for so many of our events. When you met John, he automatically put a smile on your face. John managed the raffle tickets for Seniors Assisting Seniors during the Golf Tournaments. He was instrumental in fine tuning our club's membership list that consisted of over 300 members. Another wonderful thing John did was putting on the J Marshall VIP (Visually Impaired Putters) Tournament. Mr. Owen Egge served in the United States Navy. Owen was honorably discharged from the United States Navy and later moved to Sun City Aliante. He was also a patriot to our country. Owen served on the Board of Directors of Sun City Aliante. Owen was an original member of the Veterans Club and was instrumental in getting the original monument through the approval process and assisted by Sy Nielson in the design, acquisition and wording on the original monument and its location in the courtyard of the Community Center. He participated in many of the Veterans Club events and was always willing to lend a helping hand at all of our programs. Owen was one of the founders of Seniors Assisting Seniors. As one of its founders, he put together a host of volunteers throughout the years he also gracefully served in. Owen, I will miss you greatly and I know the Veterans Club and the entire Community of Sun City Aliante will miss you as well. God Bless you both John and Owen. In Fond Memories from the Veterans Club and Sun City Aliante Community. David Hollander Veterans Club Chair

VETS365 VETS365 has suddenly accelerated its mission. We just received our first shipping container that will be put on land in Pahrump shortly. They must raise $10,000 to convert it. They will continue to look for corporate sponsors and personal donations for this. They also need Volunteer Carpenters to help them convert the first home. The group is working with the City of Las Vegas to offer Parks and Recreation classes to the community. This will help expand their reach to veterans in need. Staff members are also volunteering once a month to feed the homeless with a non-profit called CARES on the east side of Las Vegas. They accept donations of blankets, pillows, backpacks, canned foods with easy-to-open tops, men's, and women's clothing. If you can donate or help them with carpenter skills, please call Sheila Cohen at 952-491-4121. Thanks for all you do to help us!
