BOARD OF DIRECTORS ANNOUNCED NEW DIRECTIVE ON MASKING POLICY On February 10, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak announced an immediate end to the state's mask mandate, citing a downward trend in coronavirus cases. In accordance with Governor Sisolak's rescinding of the indoor mask mandate,
the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors on Thursday, February 10, issued the following directive: EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, FACE MASKS WILL NO LONGER BE REQUIRED TO BE WORN AT ANY TIME INSIDE THE SUN CITY ALIANTE COMMUNITY CENTER.
If residents prefer, they are welcome to continue wearing a mask inside the Community Center.
and long-term care facilities, which will be overseen by the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services.
Governor Sisolak said the change applies to all people in Nevada, regardless of vaccination status. It came as Las Vegas anticipated a large influx of visitors over the weekend for the Super Bowl on Sunday.
Local businesses and organizations, including school districts, can still set their own masking policies, according to the governor.
Mask requirements will remain in place for public transportation and air travel, per federal policy. Masking may also remain in facilities serving vulnerable populations, like hospitals, clinics The State of Nevada continues to encourage all residents and visitors to be vaccinated as soon as they are able. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) all three vaccines are safe and effective, and Nevadans 5 years of age and older are encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible. * The Community Center hours of operation are as indicated below. facilities and must be accompanied by a resident. Guest registration is $5. All Clubs and Special Interest Groups are invited to resume activities. However, the group leaders must contact Lori Daniels to confirm dates, time, and space. Open Play is permitted, but you must contact the Front Desk 24 hours in advance to request your time and space.
Masks had been required indoors for all people in Nevada, regardless of vaccination status, since the end of July last year. The Board continued to follow Nevada Governor's and Health Authorities' mandates through the entire COVID-19 epidemic. Thank you for your patience and for following the rules we put in place inside the Community Center. We are now excited to move forward to schedule more awesome trips and events in the upcoming year. Our community center has recently undergone a major renovation of over a million dollars with no increase in assessment or the need of a special assessment. Our residents live an ACTIVE lifestyle, participating in over 40 sanctioned clubs and special interest groups. In addition, our Lifestyle Director schedules hundreds of events a year, including local and out-of-state excursions, as well as offering our residents an extensive array of fitness classes, including Yoga, Zumba, Aqua Aerobics, Strength Stretch and Balance and more. Our pickleball and tennis complex and our fitness center are state-of-art facilities. The pickleball courts, the best in Nevada, hosted the 2014 Nevada Senior Games Pickleball Tournament. We are the only HOA in Nevada in which ALL Board members have achieved their DCAL (Dedicated Community Association Leader) certifications (recently elected Board members are currently completing their certifications). In fact, several current and past Board members have received their Advanced DCAL certifications. A publicly owned golf course runs through our community provides the benefit of living in a “golf course community” without adversely impacting our assessments. Our community has a volunteer staff of residents who patrol our streets 5 days a week, to help ensure safety. This is in addition to the Master Community's security patrol. Our very active Veterans organization is one of the largest in Nevada. We have seven models of homes from which to choose. Because we are located 14 miles directly north of the world-famous Las Vegas Strip, straight east of Mt. Charleston and just to the south of the Sheep Mountain range, our views are unequaled in the valley. A modern hotel-casino with a number of excellent dining options is within walking distance of our community. The Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument is essentially in our backyard. This can only enhance home values as the Monument becomes fully operational. Sun City Aliante has won the prestigious recognition of Southern Nevada Large Association of the Year Award three times (2007, 2018, and 2019) since operational control of the Community was transferred from the developer. We were nominated for the award in 2020 and 2021. Our annual HOA assessments have only been raised once since we took control of the Community from the developer. Our residents voluntarily staff the Seniors Assisting Seniors operation that provides free loaner medical equipment and assists seniors in completing tasks such as replacing home air filters and changing smoke detector batteries at no charge.
Respectfully submitted, Warren M. Geller, President Sun City Aliante Board of Directors

A Fond Farewell
When I finally retired at the end of 2014 and my wife, Kristine, and I moved to Sun City Alante, I fully intended to never get involved in anything again. I was so occupied in business and community events I needed a break. Well, one year later, there was an opening on the Finance Committee, and I decided to apply because I enjoy long term, strategic planning.
Then some friends encouraged me to run for the Board, and I knew our community well enough; Ed Sloman so, I decided to try it. At my first Board Meeting, Betty Kramer said, “It's time for a new Treasurer,” as she was retiring. My colleagues welcomed the “new kid on the block” with enthusiasm. So, I was off to a whirlwind start, and boy has it been a great ride all the way. But now it is time to move on. It appears that the community will have a new Board with newer, fresher ideas to guide our wonderful staff. My last four years on the Board of Directors has been absolutely fantastic. I ran on a program of fresh new ideas, and I can say I helped move the community forward. Some of the things that I helped to accomplish of which I am most proud include: • Assisted in guiding the Expansion & Renovation of the Community Center. As a member of the Ad Hoc Committee, I attended more than 63 meetings relating to the project. • Worked with FirstService Residential in modifying their contract to bring their proposals more in line with what the Board of Directors felt was beneficial for our community. • Worked with FirstService Residential to review wages for our great team of associates to be more competitive in the Las Vegas Valley. • Attend many coffees with the Board of Directors and the committee. • Earned my DCAL certificate. • Served as Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Association • Served as Liaison to the Finance Committee and the Property and Grounds Committee. • Attended presentation to the City Council and Fire Department thanking them for our Covid shots. I am sure I have missed a few things. It has been a very rewarding time in my life. I trust that our new Board members will be just as satisfied with their work as I have been. I collaborated with Great Colleagues Warren Geller has been our Board President my whole term, and he has been great to work alongside. Former resident and past Treasurer Betty Kramer was a good mentor to me during my first year. Wayne Headrick and I worked very hard to keep the Expansion and Enclosure project for the Community Center moving along. I have appreciated Mark Smith's longstanding Board service as a counsel to us. The late Mark Pallans was always good at keeping the Board informed on City of North Las Vegas happenings. Working with Nancy Prince prior to serving on the Finance committee was great, and I am glad I encouraged her to run for the Board. Sonya Bankston-Cullen and Mark Towers have been great additions to the Board, and I value their input. continued on page 15

2022 BOD ELECTION
MARCH 2022
SUN CITY ALIANTE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION 2022 As of the 5 p.m. deadline on Monday, February 7, four qualified Sun City Aliante residents had completed and turned in their Board Candidate Nomination Form for the 2022 election for four open Board seats. Because we received the same number of Board Candidate Nomination Forms (four) as there were open positions (four), there is no need for the formal election process.
We thank them for their important contributions to the Sun City Aliante community and their many years of service. Even though there will be no formal election process this year, much time and energy has led us to this point. I would like to thank my committee members Secretary Chris Wickliff, Kay Drewlo, Linda Egge, Kathryn Brandel, Sylvie Courtemarsh and Renee Snodgrass for all their input and cooperation. Many thanks also to Damian Carrasco, Nelenie Hernandez, Trish Williamson and Debbie Kent for their efforts and contributions.
The four candidates for the Board include incumbents Mark Smith and Sonja Bankston-Cullen and new members Edward Ernest and Debbie Matthews. All four will be deemed duly elected by acclamation by the Board at the Sun City Aliante Annual Homeowner's Meeting on Wednesday May 11, 2022.
Until next year, Larry Rothstein, Chair Sun City Aliante BOD Election Committee 2022
Ed Sloman and Wayne Headrick have decided not to serve again.
2022 CANDIDATES
SONJA BANKSTON-CULLEN
• •
SONJA BANKSTON CULLEN EDWARD ERNEST
• •
DEBBIE MATTHEWS MARK SMITH
All four will be deemed duly elected by acclamation by the Board at the Sun City Aliante Annual Homeowner's Meeting on Wednesday May 11, 2022.
Sonja Bankston-Cullen brings to this position the leadership, budgetary, communication and organizational skills that she has developed during the 30 plus years when she served as a public-school educator and administrator. Since moving to Sun City Aliante with her husband, William, in May 2017, Sonja was appointed by the Board of Directors in February 2020 to hold a seat on the Board which was vacated due to a Board member's resignation, and she served the remainder of the term ending in May 2021. She also served on the Sun City Aliante Lifestyle Committee and was appointed to the position of Chairperson of the Committee in 2019. There are many reasons Sonja chose to volunteer as a member of the Board of Directors in Sun City Aliante. But she believes the most important reason is serving our beautiful community utilizing the leadership, budgetary, communication and organizational skills that she has developed. She knows how important it is to become active in the community in which you live if you want it to positively progress. It is important for her to be a dynamic contributor to the neighborhood that she and her husband intentionally chose to enjoy their retirement.
EDWARD ERNEST My wife, Jill, and I first moved to Sun City Aliante in March of 2017 and became full time residents July 2018. I joined the Table Tennis Club and later became club president. I have also joined the Euchre and Technology Clubs and participated in Club DIAL. In 2020, I was appointed to the Sun City Aliante Finance Committee. I graduated from Purdue University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. I have worked for several companies in multiple engineering capacities. After 31 years of service, I retired from Hubbell Electrical Products in December 2016. During my career with Hubbell, I was a project engineer, product engineer, project manager, engineering manager and plant manager. My duties included design of our manufacturing equipment, implementation and management of capital budget, design of new products, management of industrial engineering and management of a satellite manufacturing facility. I am also a past president of a homeowner's association in North Carolina. Our association was new, and I chaired a sub-committee to establish our covenants, conditions and restrictions. Sun City Aliante is a wonderful place to live. I believe I have much that I can contribute bringing the skills I developed from my work experience to building and maintaining the culture of excellence for our community.

2022 CANDIDATES
2022 BOD ELECTION
DEBBIE MATTHEWS
My name is Debbie Matthews, and based on my experience I believe I can make significant contributions as a member of the Board of the Directors to our community. Prior to retiring at the beginning of 2020, I was a senior commercial property manager in Las Vegas. My career for 40 years included property management, construction, and the mortgage industry. As a commercial property manager, I have managed over 250 properties over ten years, including HOA properties. I feel my qualifications to serve on your Board include knowledge of property management, financials, budgets, contracts, vendors, and above all, I have set the highest standards for interactions with customers/clients. I will continually work for solutions to reduce your assessments, work with property management to bring residents views to their attention, address the security of our community and be a strong representative for the residents of Sun City Aliante. I moved to Apple Valley, California in 2019, where I served the Finance Committee for Sun City Apple Valley for a year and a half. I was then elected to the Board of Directors serving as the Vice President in 2021. My husband's job and my desire to be with my children and family caused us to move back to Las Vegas in June 2021. I moved to Sun City Aliante in June of 2021. I am currently serving on the Finance Committee, which has helped me to become familiar with this community and what it needs. My focus is leadership, communication, accessibility, and understanding. I feel I would be an effective Sun City Aliante Board member and thank you!
MARK SMITH I am the longest serving Board member in the history of our community. I was first elected to the Board in November 2006 and have served continuously since that time. I have held the offices of president, vice-president, and secretary. Sun City Aliante won its first “Best Large Homeowners Association of the Year” award while I was President. I hold a DCAL (Dedicated Community Association Leader) certification from the Community Associations institute. I have been a participant in, and a part of, every decision and accomplishment in our community since November of 2006. I was there and voted for both expansions of the Community Center, the building of the Craft Rooms and the Pickleball and Basketball Courts, the remodeling of our kitchen, an upgraded sound system in the Vista Room, a security system, new and improved exercise equipment and much, much more. The key to any successful community is to ensure it is financially secure, that everything is done in the best interests of the entire association, that our home values are maintained and enhanced, and that everyone is treated equally and fairly. I recognize that a director of the association has a fiduciary duty to the association to achieve these goals. Sun City Aliante is very financially secure and consistently receives the highest grade of financial integrity from our accountant. I assure you, every decision I make and vote I cast, is done in the best interests of the association. I am committed to treating all of our homeowners and residents fairly, equally, and respectfully and strive to keep the lines of communication open between the Board and our residents. The Board has maintained and increased our property values; the new renovation of our clubhouse has gone a long way, and will continue to go a long way, in maintaining and increasing our property values and in keeping us competitive with all the new “over 55” communities springing up in our area. I am arguably the most outspoken and forceful speaker at Board meetings. It is essential for every director to voice his/her opinion on matters and not sit quietly without contributing anything to the discussion at hand. People may not always agree with me, or like the way I say things, but everyone will know where I stand on issues and why I feel that way. I graduated from Hunter College in New York City and received my law degree from Brooklyn Law School. I served as the Principal Law Clerk to several Justices of the New York State Supreme Court from January 1976 to June 1986. In July 1986, my family and I moved to South Florida where I served as an assistant state attorney under Janet Reno, and then under Katherine Fernandez Rundle, for twenty years. While an assistant state attorney I specialized in prosecuting domestic violence and elderly abuse cases for over six years and then public corruption cases for over ten years. I had the distinct pleasure of putting numerous wife beaters, elderly abuses, corrupt politicians, and corrupt public employees in prison for their crimes. I was also a member of the Hate Crimes Committee, which determined if an individual case met the criteria for being prosecuted as a hate crime. I have given everything I have to making Sun City Aliante the best HOA in Nevada and believe that I can continue to contribute to our community and keep it the best there is. I have brought, and will continue to bring, common sense, practicality, experience, history, integrity, and a keen sense of ethics to the Board. I most humbly and respectfully ask for your support.

MARCH 2022
WE ARE...
COMMUNITY MGR Hello Residents, We were excited that Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak announced an immediate end to the State's mask mandate on February 10, and masks would no longer be required in public places, citing a downward trend in coronavirus cases. In accordance with the Governor's guidance, the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors quickly responded by issuing a directive on February 10 stating that, effective immediately, face masks were no longer required to be worn at any time inside the Community Center. However, if anyone in the community chooses to continue wearing face masks, they are welcome to do so. The Board's directive was sent out that same day in an eBlast and posted on the website. After nearly two long years of wearing face masks, it will be great to see your smiling faces again! As of Monday, February 7 at 5 p.m., the deadline for turning in Board Candidate Nomination Forms for the Board of Directors Election, four qualified Sun City Aliante residents completed and submitted their forms for the four open seats on the Board of Directors. According to Nevada Revised Statues (NRS) 116, the law passed by the Nevada legislature which governs HOA communities, when you have as many Board Candidate Nomination Forms as open positions on the Board, all individuals will be duly elected by acclamation at the Annual Meeting, and there will be no need to execute the formal election process. I want to express my appreciation and gratitude to two long-standing members of the Board, Ed Sloman and Wayne Headrick, for their extraordinary service to the Sun City Aliante community during their tenure. In addition, I am happy to welcome two new Board members, Debbie Matthews and Ed Ernest, and to thank Mark Smith and Sonja Bankston-Cullen for continuing their service for two more years. All four candidates will be deemed duly elected by acclamation by the Board at the Sun City Aliante Homeowner's Meeting on Wednesday, May 11, 2022. (Please see their biographies on pages 8 & 9 of this issue of The Breeze Magazine. Many thanks to the Chair of the Election Committee, Larry Rothstein, and his committee members for continuing to do a great job year after year. We all appreciate your dedication and important contributions. We are very proud that once again Sun City Aliante has been nominated by the Community Association Institute (CAI) as the Southern Nevada Outstanding Large Association of the Year for 2021. This is the fourth consecutive year that we have been nominated. We won the award in 2018 and 2019. The only three kinds of trees not allowed in the community are: Mulberry, Oleander (petite/dwarf varieties are allowed), and Olive trees (seedless varieties such as Swan Hill and Wilsonii are allowed). As warmer weather continues, many of you may decide to start making some external changes to your home or lot. The Committee welcomes residents to attend if you have any questions or need guidance. The ARC will hold their Review Meetings this month on Thursday, March 3 and Thursday, March 17, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Please contact Carol Garbarino in advance if you would like to attend at 702-638-5023 or email cgarbarino@suncityaliante.us. Though ARC members cannot recommend landscapers, construction companies, or any type of vendor, they are certainly a great resource and have a plethora of knowledge regarding this community. We ask you to please refrain from feeding wildlife. Per Clark County, Municipal Code 10.36.035, Pigeon control - The roosting or lingering of wild pigeons poses a health and property hazard in addition to offending the aesthetic senses by pigeon contamination. Such roosting or lingering of wild pigeons is declared to be a public nuisance. - It shall be unlawful for any person to encourage the lingering, roosting and/or congregating of wild pigeons by providing food – including but not limited to, grain seeds, breadcrumbs, and miscellaneous food scraps – intended for wild pigeon ingestion on public or residential property. (Ord. No.4539, § 1, 11-7-2017) As a homeowner, you have the right to live in a community where the property is maintained according to established standards. Homeowners also have the responsibility to maintain their property according to established standards. Please read and comply with the governing documents of the community. Thank you to most of our residents who comply and live harmoniously with fellow neighbors. Your civility, consideration, and cooperation are greatly appreciated. Do not forget to set your irrigation clock ahead one-hour when daylight saving time begins on March 13 at 2 a.m. This also is a great time to check your irrigation clock's batteries. In addition, please review your last water bill for your assigned watering days by going to www.snwa.com. Do you own a Recreational Vehicle (RV)? RVing is great fun. Please remember there are restrictions as to where and how long you can park your RV. According to the North Las Vegas City Council, RV parking on residential neighborhoods is limited to 48 hours. RV Parking is available to residents only in the Community Center Parking Lot on a limited basis. Resident parking is not to exceed four times per year for 48 hours each time in a designated area only. The owner's identification and proof of insurance will be checked. All policies are subject to change as deemed necessary. Have an awesome month as we welcome back spring! Nelenie Hernandez Assistant Manager, Director of Compliance

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
MAYOR PRO TEMPORE RICHARD CHERCHIO Hello Residents,
Dear Residents, This issue of The Breeze hails spring on March 20 and brings us closer to the warmer weather. Get ready for the annual sleep-losing tradition, known as daylight saving time, which begins on March 13. Don't forget to set your clocks ahead one hour. This month we offer events with two special guests. Come celebrate “The Luck of the Irish” with a St. Patrick's Day Lunch, hosted by Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick on Wednesday, March 9 at 11:30 a.m. She will no doubt serve up delicious fare, as always, and keep us informed of the latest happenings on the legislative scene that directly affect Sun City Aliante residents. In addition, please join North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee on March 14 at 10 a.m. for a preview of the 2022 State of City address and learn about all the unique opportunities coming to our city. This Snack 'n' Learn will be hosted by Patty Steinbock and Silvia Kilo with Realty One Group. Please register for both events at the Front Desk. One “Resident Spotlight” features Darian Stevens, the granddaughter of Sun City Aliante residents, Ken and Phyllis Knudson, from Missoula, Montana. Darian, who has been on the U.S. Ski Team for the past 10 years, was selected to compete in the Slopestyle Big Air and Slopestyle skiing categories at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. We also include a remarkable story about residents Joe Napolitano and his brother, Bob and the bond they have shared since childhood. A special thank you to Alan and Helen Melnick for suggesting we include Joe in our Resident Spotlight. I want to remind you about three upcoming events that are not to be missed! The Arts & Crafts Show held on April 1-2 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. is a very popular event, designed to showcase handmade items. You will be able to shop for such items as artwork, baskets, ceramics, pottery, fused glass items, quilted and knitted items, sewing crafts, beading, jewelry, needlework and crocheted items, candles, woodworking products, greeting cards, silk scarves and much more. The show is open to the General Public. Also, please mark your calendar for the Advertiser's Meet 'n' Greet, hosted by the Communications Committee and The Breeze magazine on April 21. You will have the opportunity to meet advertisers face-to-face, enjoy refreshments and win door prizes. On May 14, Neighborhood Watch will host a Home Safety & Health Expo featuring many vendors who offer home safety items and other products related to your home and health. We will provide more information in the near future. You can stay up-to-date on community happenings through the eBlast. If you have a computer, laptop, or cell phone, you should register your email address with us to receive the eBlast. This will ensure you don't miss out on our three weekly eBlasts (related to upcoming meetings and notices, Lifestyle events, and free Lunch 'n' Learns and Snack 'n' Learns). You will also receive periodic announcements with timely information throughout the week. Please contact me for instructions on how to register for the eBlast. NEIGHBORHOOD NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MONTHLY BULLETIN: NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
Since the start of COVID-19, Delta, and now the Omicron variants, our Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, Jim Blossey has been asked what has happened to his Block Captains. Here are some of Jim's thoughts: All of our Block Captains are trying hard to do their part to protect our community, but they have not been able to be out calling on their neighbors. If you are wondering what happened to your Block Captain and have a problem, please feel free to call Jim Blossey at 775-530-5119. In the last few months, we have answered a lot of questions, and we hope it has helped. Some of our Block Captains are new to the community and Neighborhood Watch, and they are eager to meet their neighbors. Here is one way you can meet your Block Captain or find out if you have one. The Neighborhood Watch Safety Fair Expo will be held May 14. If weather permits, it will be held outdoors; otherwise, it will be held in the Vista Hall. Aside from many vendors, Neighborhood Watch will have a table, most of our Block Captains will be present and you will be able to come by and say hello. People often wonder, “What is the source of our crime in our community?” Is it the casino, the new gas station or the shopping center? Another concern is will the new homes being built next to our community or the new apartment complex bring in more crime? We, the residents of Sun City Aliante, just might contribute to our own problem by unknowingly inviting criminals into our community. Who me? What have I done? How many times have you left your garage door open? During the day, there are strangers driving our streets and looking for open garage doors, and before you know it there will be something missing. One of the most popular items for thieves are your golf clubs. How many times do you forget to lock your car doors when the car is parked outside? You may not think so, but crime statistics show otherwise. Recently four young people were seen at 5 a.m. checking car door handles. They were discovered and jumped into a black or dark blue 4-door sedan. They will return. These are ways that you invite crime to our community. Neighborhood Watch urges you to be aware of your surroundings, protect your property by turning on your outside lights at night, and keep doors locked when you're not going in and out of your house or garage. If you see something that looks out of place in the community, say something.

UNLV MEN’S BASKETBALL VS. COLORADO STATE – THOMAS & MACK – FEBRUARY 19, 2022
During halftime, UNLV honored Runnin' Rebel legend Robert Smith, former point guard, by retiring his number 10 jersey. As a famed member of the Hardway 8, Smith led UNLV to its first NCAA Final Four appearance in 1977 and is widely considered the best point guard to ever wear the Scarlet & Gray. This recognition was a heart-felt tribute to this amazing player who suffered a debilitating stroke in 2019. His presence brought a standing ovation from the crowd.

2022 BEIJING OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES: Resident Knudson's Granddaughter, Darian Stevens, Competes on the US Olympic Team Darian Stevens, the granddaughter of Sun City Aliante residents, Ken and Phyllis Knudson, from Missoula, Montana, was selected to compete in the 2022 Winter Olympics! She recently celebrated her 25th birthday. She will graduate from the University of Utah in 2023. Darin competed in both the Slopestyle Big Air and Slopestyle Skiing categories. “Darian has been on the U.S. Ski Team for the past 10 years now, and this is her second Olympic game competition,” exclaimed her delighted grandfather, Ken. “She participated in South Korea in 2018, but only in the Slopestyle competition, and she finished in the 18th position. We are very proud of her accomplishments.” Ken and Phyllis could not attend the games, but they were cheering her on, along with many friends and well-wishers in Sun City Aliante. Darian competed to qualify for the Slopestyle Big Air Skiing Competition, and she placed eighth in the competition. She was the only American who qualified for the Big Air Finals. The competition for the Big Air Finals took place on February 8. Darin placed in 11th position in the final competition. She competed in the Slopestyle Skiing competition but did not qualify for the finals. While snowboarding at the Olympic Winter Games has been a staple since its introduction in 1998, slopestyle and Big Air fall into the new era of the Olympic program. “Darian is not a downhill racer; she is a free ski athlete,” explained Ken. “The Big Air is one jump, and skiers do combinations of tricks off a 60-foot jump. Slopestyle is a competition that has both rails' tricks and jumps. There are a combination of rail tricks and jumps in the course that skiers must do. Scores are awarded based on the degree of difficulty, getting their grabs, amplitude and style. Slopestyle Big Air is a new event this year.” “It has been so exciting to watch Darin compete in the Winter Olympics in Beijing, and she did a fantastic television interview which was aired on NBC News NOW at nbcnews.com/now and Peacock streaming service on February 8,” said Ken. “I am so excited to be here. I put it all out there and that's what the Olympics is all about,” said Darian Stevens during her interview. “We've had nothing but awesome experiences here. Everyone is so nice to us. We have been enjoying every minute. We are just savoring at being at the Olympics.
HISTORY OF THE WINTER OLYMPICS The Winter Olympic Games are a significant international multi-sport event conducted every four years for snow and icebased sports. The 1924 Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France, and were the inaugural Winter Olympics. The ancient Olympic Games, which were held at Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD, were the inspiration for the contemporary Olympic Games. From 1924 through 1936, the Games were conducted every four years, with World War II interrupting them in 1940 and 1944. They were revived in 1948. The Summer and Winter Olympic Games were held in the same year until 1992 when the IOC decided to break the Summer and Winter Olympic Games into four-year cycles in alternate even-numbered years. Since its start, the Winter Olympic Games have changed. Twelve countries have staged the Winter Olympic Games across three continents. Four times in the United States, three times in France, and twice in Austria, Canada, Japan, Italy, Norway, and Switzerland. In addition, Germany, Yugoslavia, Russia, and South Korea have only hosted the Winter Olympic Games once apiece. 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games The 2022 Winter Olympics, an international winter multisport event, took place in Beijing and sites near the adjacent cities of Yanqing and Chongli in China. The games began on February 4 and ended on February 20, 2022. Beijing became the first city in the world to hold both the Winter and Summer Olympic Games when they hosted the Winter Olympic Games. Biathlon, curling, ice hockey, skiing, and luge were among the 109 sports that were held in the 2022 Winter Olympics. There were also new events in the following sports: women's monobob, men's and women's large air freestyle events, and a mixed relay in short track speed skating. Fans were prevented from attending athletic events during the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo due to fears about the coronavirus. The International Olympic Committee did, however, plan to invite in-person spectators to the Winter Olympics. In addition, diplomatic boycotts over the Uyghur genocide and China's overall human rights condition were raised as concerns and controversies for the 2022 Beijing Games. The United States also boycotted the games due to the human rights concerns.

THE BOND OF BROTHERS AND SPORTS THROUGH A LIFETIME One of the best aspects of my job, as Editor of The Breeze, is talking one-onone with Sun City Aliante residents. I am always moved by the amazing stories residents share during an interview about their careers, favorite hobbies, travels, and awesome people who are part of their life.
After two years, Joe chose to leave school and follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, who unfortunately passed away when Joe was 8 years old. He became a full journeyman steamfitter and worked in that profession until the 1970s. He then became a plumber with the City of New York, Department of Environmental Protection, where he managed water treatment plants for 30 years.
Joe Napolitano has a remarkable story. He was recently inducted into the Las Vegas Senior Softball Association's Hall of Fame. Joe plays in the highest level (L-R) are Georgiana Napolitano, Joe Napolitano, of the Association, the and Bob Napolitano Majors Division (age 7074) and travels regularly to compete in different tournaments. "When I started to play ball again, I was rusty, but little by little my timing came back. My skills came back, and I moved from AA to AAA to Majors," Joe noted.
When he is not playing sports, Joe is passionate about history and travel. "I have been to Italy many times, and we are going back in August with Georgiana and two other couples," he said. "We plan to spend three days in Rome touring the city. Then we take a cruise to the Greek isles."
His story began in the Bronx, New York, where he and his older brother, Bob, grew up playing sports together… and they are still playing ball in Las Vegas. Joe actually moved to Las Vegas to follow his brother, Bob, who nominated him for the Senior Softball Association Hall of Fame. "When I moved here in 2008, my brother and I started playing softball together again. I grew up loving sports. I was passionate about football and baseball," Joe remarked. "We lived in an apartment building across from a big school yard. My brother and I used to toss the baseball back and forth. In the winter, we would kick field goals.” All this practicing led to Joe's success in high school. "I won a kicking challenge with another guy, and the coach saw it and asked me to be the field goal kicker for the football team," Joe said. In addition, he played offensive guard on the Cardinal Hayes High School football team. Joe was also an outstanding baseball player. "I had 20/15 vision. I could actually see the release point of the pitcher; so, I knew if I was going to get a fast or a curve ball," Joe added. Right after graduation, Joe had to make a decision which would ultimately affect his life. "I got a call from the New York Yankees to sign a minor league contract with them. This might have launched a baseball career with the Yankees," he said. "At the Joe Napolitano is shown coaching for his same time, I had scholarships to son's games. several schools. It was a tough decision to make at age 17; but in the end, I chose to stay in New York and attend college."

Joe's story is one of many successes. He excelled at everything he ever set out to do and he describes himself as a happy person. "I am happy because my wife, Georgiana, still lets me play kid's games," he said laughingly.
At age 73, Joe recommends that everyone stay physically active, "If you don't use it, you lose it."

HAPPY MARCH FROM SUN CITY ALIANTE UKULELE STUMMERS!
Donna Lawhead, donnavegas10@gmail.com Lynda Towers, Lynda1229@msn.com
The Ukulele Strummers enjoyed a wonderful Ukulele workshop and performance by Dani Joy and Perry Stauffer on February 26. The workshop was created especially for our ukulele club and Dani focused on how different types of strums can change the feel of a song. During her concert Dani's audience was immediately drawn into the smooth jazz vibe that Dani loves to sing and Perry provided the deep supporting tones on his bass. They are an amazing duo and we were so happy to experience them again!
VETERANS CLUB
Several Ukulele Festivals are coming up later this year. In April members of our Ukulele club are thrilled to be attending the Memphis Ukulele Festival hosted this year by our friend Pete McCarty. In September several of our club members will be attending the Reno Ukulele Festival. Our friends Dani and Perry will be hosting the Reno Ukulele Festival this year so it will be extra special. The SCAL Ukulele Strummers are still having fun every Sunday afternoon learning new songs and strumming techniques and playing music together. Two of our members taught two Hawaiian songs a week in Jan-Feb which was awesome! As usual we are continuing to offer three classes and all classes have room for more strummers:

FREE IRS PROGRAMS TO HELP TAXPAYES PREPARE AND FILE RETURNS It's a new tax season. While some things are different, one thing that remains the same is, taxpayers can have their taxes prepared for free through one of two long-standing IRS programs. People with low to moderate income may benefit from this free tax help through one of these programs: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance: This program is for eligible taxpayers who generally earn $58,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers. Tax Counseling for the Elderly: This program is mainly for people age 60 or older specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. Here are some benefits of using these programs: • They're conveniently located. Sites are generally located in community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls and other places. Most sites are open from February through April. Some sites are open through October. Some locations offer virtual services and self-help options. • Filing is safe and secure. VITA and TCE provide free electronic filing, and e-file is the safest, most accurate way to file a tax return. Taxpayers can combine e-file with direct deposit for faster refunds. • Volunteers are trained on tax law. Volunteers are certified to
• •
help people get all the tax benefits for which they are eligible. These may include the earned income tax credit, American opportunity tax credit, the child tax credit or the credit for the elderly. Assistance is also available in languages other than English. This is available at some VITA and TCE sites. Each site list the available languages on the VITA Locator Tool. Many military bases have VITA sites. Volunteers can help with military tax topics including benefits for those serving in combat zones.
Here's how taxpayers can find a volunteer tax site near them: • Use the VITA Locator Tool at IRS.gov • Download the IRS2Go app • Call 800-906-9887 • Search for AARP Tax-Aide locations through the AARP Locator or calling 888-227-7669. Before going to a site, taxpayers should check out the What to Bring page on IRS.gov to make sure they have all the required documents and information. If taxpayers don't bring all the files and documents, the volunteers may be unable to help them. (Source: IRS.com)
