Our new Board of Directors has officially been seated, and we said goodbye to two members, Wayne Headrick and Ed Sloman, who want to attend Board meetings and complain about how we voted or did not take up an issue that they feel is important. Seriously, I will personally miss their sage input and commitment to our community. I have had a couple of rough months. First, I contracted a wicked case of the shingles, and following that, Jane and I tested positive for COVID. Having had two vaccines and a booster and being grounded from normal activities and wearing a face mask, none of it prevented the highly transmissible virus from finding us. I dodged a bullet. As soon as I tested positive, our doctor ordered us to be infused with monoclonal antibodies, which I truly believed prevented us from advancing to a more serious form of the disease. I am telling you this as at least a dozen residents I know from our HOA have tested positive around the same time as we did. They were also fully vaccinated; so, bottom line, we are never truly safe from a continually mutating strain of COVID. No trained professional in the viral field has a fool proof way of preventing a breakthrough infection. What is important is that we do not get lulled into a state of false safety. If you have any signs of what you think is the beginning of a cold or flu, take an in-home COVID test immediately and contact your health care provider to see the next steps you should take. On the above, a happy note, I pray that you will stay well and safe; so, we can continue to enjoy our outstanding family life and community. Respectfully submitted, Warren M. BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Happy & Healthy Summer
Let me be the first to wish everyone a very happy and healthy summer holiday season. May your adventures, both near and far, bring you safe travels, fun, happiness, health and great times. For those of you staying home this summer, please take advantage of the terrific amenities, programs and activities available to you within our community. Do not forget to stay hydrated! On March 25 of this year, Owen Egge, my next-door neighbor, a pillar of our community, and someone who I considered my brother, passed after a long illness. Owen was one of the original members of our community, having moved here in the first wave of homeowners. Not only was he a member of the Board of Directors, but he was also a valued member of numerous committees and groups such as the Veteran's Club and Seniors Assisting Seniors. Owen was well known in the community, having done “handyman” work for many years, and was always there for anyone who needed assistance with something. I, along with many of his other friends in the community, will miss him terribly. He will always be in our hearts and thoughts. Rest in peace my friend. Mark Smith
The summer season brings extremely hot weather to our community. Some of our residents feel that it is beneficial to keep their garage doors open a few inches to a few feet to cool the garage. Besides the fact that our governing documents prohibit keeping garage doors open except for ingress and egress, anyone who keeps their garage door open, even a little bit, is courting trouble. Forget about the creepy crawlies that could drop in for a visit and take up residence, I am speaking about the two-legged animals that could gain entrance to your home and inflict physical, emotional and monetary damage to you and your loved ones. Your life is too precious to endanger it by allowing easy access to the criminal element that is always looking for an opportunity to take what is not theirs. Be smart, be careful and be safe. Wayne Headrick and Ed Sloman, two of our long serving and outstanding Board members, retired from the board in May. I thank them for their dedicated service in helping to make our HOA the best there is in Nevada. Welcome to Debbie Matthews and Edward Ernest, our two new directors, and thank you for stepping up to fill the vacancies created by the departure of Ed and Wayne. May you have long, successful and stress free (good luck with that!) years as Board members. I look forward to working with you. May all of our residents and staff have a wonderful, safe and healthy summer. See you in the neighborhood.

As of the 5 p.m. deadline on Monday, February 7, four qualified Sun City Aliante residents had completed and turned in their Board Candidate Nomination Form for the 2022 election for four open Board seats. Because we received the same number of Board Candidate Nomination Forms (four) as there were open positions (four), there was no need for the formal election process. The four candidates for the Board include incumbents: Mark Smith and Sonja BankstonCullen and new members Edward Ernest and Debbie Matthews. All four were deemed duly elected by acclamation by the Board at the Sun City Aliante Annual Homeowner's Meeting on Wednesday, May 11, 2022. GENERAL MANAGER
T H A N K Y O U TO T H E P R O P E RT Y & GROUNDS COMMITTEE
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Property & Grounds Committee for their work on multiple projects over the past few months. The Committee is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all the Common Areas for the Association, including around the Community Center. They work closely with our landscaping company and management and provide recommendations to the Board of Directors on remodeling, enhancement, and replacement of items in the Common Areas.
First, I would like to acknowledge the members of the Property & Grounds Committee for all their efforts. A special thank you to the following individuals: Chairperson, Wayne Edgerton, and Committee members Gloria Trujillo, Jack Nordling, John Palmer, Robert Stone, and Mark Benz. Right now, I am excited about a major landscape conversion project the Committee is working on and the benefits it will bring to our community. The major areas the Committee is looking at include: the grass area in front of the water feature (at the intersection of Aliante Pkwy. and Elkhorn); the grass areas at the front of the Community Center that were not included in the Expansion and Renovation Project; and the grass areas behind the Vista Room and pool areas. All of these spaces will be converted to desertscape. As the result of a bill signed by Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak, HOAs, businesses and multifamily properties are required to remove purely decorative, nonfunctional grass found in many areas in HOA communities and business complexes by the end of 2026. The law does not apply to grass in homeowner's yards, or to grass used for recreation at parks and schools. The Committee is working closely with the City of North Las Vegas, along with the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA), in executing a Water Smart Landscapes Rebate Program to covert nonfunctional grass to desert landscaping. Our HOA will receive $3 per square foot of grass that we remove and replace with desert landscaping up to the first 10,000 square feet converted and $1.50 per square foot thereafter per property, per year. We will realize many benefits from the conversion to desert landscaping. In addition to the rebate, we will also experience water savings. The Committee will also have an opportunity to update our community's landscaping look and make our community more attractive and appealing. SNWA recently reported that the unused grass in our valley soaks up about 12 billion gallons of water every year. That is equal to more than 10 percent of our entire allocation for water from the Colorado River – the main source of Nevada's drinking water. The Committee is working on the following projects: • Installation of gates to the Pickleball Courts • Installation of a handrail at the entrance to the Community Center
WE ARE...
In addition, at the May 11 Board of Directors meeting, the Board tasked the Committee to look into the following: • Work on options to possibly place benches inside and outside the main entrance to the Community Center • Work on options to add landscaping and signage to the entrance located at Crested Cardinal and Aliante Pkwy. In closing, I want to reiterate how much we appreciate the work of the Property and Grounds Committee in helping us to maintain the highest standards possible for our amazing community and create a WOW factor that makes Sun City Aliante so inviting to new residents. If you are interested in getting involved in making the decisions, in coordination with Management and the Board of Directors, that directly affect you, I suggest you consider joining one of our Committees. Consider bringing your experience and passion to help us maintain this community as one of the best in Nevada. Volunteering your time and talents is one of the most powerful ways to make a difference, to help others, and to enhance your community and property values. Damian Carrasco General Manager, Sun City Aliante

COMMUNITY STANDARDS Hello Residents, You received the Age Verification Survey as an insert in this issue of The Breeze magazine. Please complete this form and return it to the Front Desk or Customer Service Office as soon as possible and no later than August 31, 2022. If you are leasing your home, you are still responsible for ensuring that your tenant completes the form and submits it to SCAL management. As amended, the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 (The Fair Housing Act), prohibits discrimination in housing and real estate-related transactions based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, handicap and familial status (in general, the presence of children under the age of 18 in the household). The prohibition against discrimination based on familial status became effective March 12, 1989. The Act contained a provision exempting “senior” housing from the prohibition against familial status discrimination. The Housing for Older Persons Act (HOPA), signed into law in 1995, amended the housing for older person's exemptions against familial status discrimination. The HOPA modified the statutory definition of housing for older persons, as housing intended and operated for occupancy by at least one person 55 years of age or older per unit. It required that facilities or communities claiming the exemption establish age verification procedures. Therefore, please comply. I thank all of you for helping me make sure we follow the federal mandates. Many residents in the community may or may not enjoy their relatives, but I know there is no denying that they love their dogs. I owned several dogs throughout the years and still do. I have had the pleasure of owning Pit Bulls, Jack Russell terriers, Dachshund, and an American Akita. Currently, we have a black Russian terrier that weighs 130 lbs. I LOVE dogs. I know they bark, especially with the breeds I have owned in the past, but with that said, I learned to mitigate their barking, so it does not become a nuisance to me and to others. According to City of North Las Vegas, “No person owning or possessing an animal shall permit such animal to bark, yelp, bray or make other noises in such a manner that, because of the duration or repetition of the noise, a reasonable person would consider an unreasonable intrusion into the quiet enjoyment of their property.” Ergo, I ask pet owners to please be respectful, courteous, and sensitive to the noise your dogs make. On the other hand, neighbors who are bothered by the dog barking, please communicate with your neighbor kindly about the issue first. If the pleasantries don't work, then I will be more than happy to assess and follow the procedures of non-compliance issues. Trash pickup is scheduled every Tuesday, and the bulk pickup is Tuesday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 28. If you have any questions, please contact me at 702- 638-5006 or email assistantmanager@suncityaliante.us Happy Father's Day to all our fathers! ASSOCIATION NEWS
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Hello Residents,
This month we celebrate Father's Day on June 19. I would like to take this opportunity to share a little bit about how much this day means to me personally and how my father influenced my life. I was blessed with two loving parents, my mother, Genevieve, and my father, Francis, or better known as “Frank.” I was the oldest of three children and the only daughter. My two brothers were much younger than me. From my earliest childhood at age 3-5, I remember going on special adventures with my dad. We lived in Madison, Wisconsin, right near the Vilas Park, which contained a fabulous zoo and a beautiful beach right on Lake Wingra inside the park. I remember going swimming often in Lake Wingra with my dad. But the highlight of our visits to Vilas Park was riding the camels on Sundays. The Shriners Organization housed many of the camels they used in parades right in the Vilas Park Zoo. The Shiners offered free camel rides to children, and my dad took me as often as possible. However, at age 5, my family moved from Madison to the Washington, D.C. area, because my father accepted a position with the CIA in Virginia. It was very hard for me at first as I missed my relatives and friends, but I soon adapted. Dad to the rescue again! The visits to Vilas Park were soon replaced with more exciting adventures, including trips to the Smithsonian Museums, visits to the Washington Monument, The White House, the Jefferson Memorial for the Cherry Blossom Festival, the Lincoln Memorial, Mount Vernon, and we even managed to go to all the popular movies. Of course, as the years passed, my two brothers joined us on these adventures (sometimes, my mom too), but my dad and I had a special bond. He instilled in me a great love of history and writing, and he was my strongest supporter when I eventually headed off to the University of Maryland, College Park. It was at Maryland University that I met my first husband, Richard Elgin. When we married, he had just become a Naval officer and all of the sudden I was a Navy wife. My experiences with the Navy and our two sons, Kevin and Brad, were irreplaceable, and that is when I also developed my appreciation for Veterans. We lived for 10 years overseas on the island of Sicily and the city of Naples, Italy and were able to travel throughout Europe. When we returned to Washington, D.C., I was lucky enough to land a job with USO World Headquarters as the Director of Communications and Publications due to my understanding of what it was like to be a military wife. Four years later, I joined the Fleet Reserve Association where I wrote NAVAL AFFAIRS monthly magazine, which was sent to our 350,000 members, and ON WATCH, a publication which was mailed quarterly to all activeduty Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel stationed around the world. In my position, I was also a lobbyist for military personnel issues on Capitol Hill. Everything in life seems to come full circle… during the 10 years I worked for the Fleet Reserve in Washington, D.C., my mom had passed away and my father's health was suffering. In 1998, I decided to resign my position and move to Las Vegas to be with my father and brother. It was a tough decision, I left my eldest son, Kevin, and his family thriving in Charlottesville, Virginia, my brother Tom and his family, and many dear friends. But this move would bring me closer to my son, Brad, and his family living in Reno. I am so grateful I was able to spend three years living with my dad in Las Vegas before he passed away. Soon after arriving, I accepted a position with the Las Vegas Metro Chamber as Director of Communications and Public Relations. After leaving that job, I joined the staff at Sun City Aliante in 2011 as Assistant Director of Activities and Fitness programs until 2016, when I became the Editor and Publisher of The Breeze. As you may know, writing is still my passion as well as planning seminars and handling the advertising program. What is not to love? I am blessed with kind, loving team members and many fabulous residents. If you have any questions about The Breeze, Seminars or eBlast, please contact me at twilliamson@suncityaliante.us or 702-429-1623. Thank you for letting me share some wonderful memories of my dad. I wish all of our Sun City Aliante fathers a very Happy Father's Day! Trish Williamson Editor, The Breeze

MAYOR PRO TEMPORE RICHARD CHERCHIO Hello Residents, As many of you are already aware, DR Horton has bought a large portion of the Villages of Tule Springs and they are going vertical with phase one, which will be next to your east wall. In total, roughly 8,600 homes are planned over a 20-year buildout. Residents can look forward to a 35-acre regional park, equipped with four baseball and softball fields, three soccer and multi-use fields, a playground, splash pad and more! Additionally, a City of North Las Vegas Police Station and a Career Technical Academy are in the works in the area. Recently, we had the pleasure of having DR Horton at meet and greet with us to give residents an update on construction. Many of you were able to ask questions and receive answers quickly, however, I know there are still a few follow-ups that we're waiting on. I will get back to you all soon with more updates once I receive them. Although DR Horton is only one of the builders that purchased land from the developer, other builders will follow suit and continue to keep residents informed on future homes that will be built. As promised, they will all be high-end single-story homes. The project will complement and improve all property values around it. I want to thank our Aliante Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and of course, Debra Kent for her hard work in bringing this together for me. As the weather starts to heat up, please remember to stay safe, keep hydrated and continue taking care of yourselves and your beloved pets. If you're looking for fun things to do with your families, please make sure to enjoy our splash pads, which are now open, and City pools – Walker and Petitti Pools-- will reopen on Saturday, June 6. Silver Mesa Recreation Center's Pool opened over Memorial Day weekend. In other entertainment news, we have a great summer concert lineup in store: Ja Rule + Ashanti (Aug. 25), Lost 80's Live! (August 26) and Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes (Sept. 2). Opened in 2015, The Amp is the only large-scale outdoor amphitheater in the Las Vegas valley located inside Craig Ranch Regional Park with seating capacity up to 6,800. Your vote counts, vote! Here some important ways voting directly affect you: It's Your Right. People have died defending this right. Don't take it for granted! Not voting is giving up your voice. Elections are decided by the people who go out and vote. Take some time and learn about the measures and the candidates. If you don't vote, someone else will make the decision for you. Your power is in your vote. The Amount of Money Allocated Your Region. This money can be used for education, youth programs, healthcare, veterans, creating jobs, the environment, etc. How Your Taxes Will Be Spent. Take an active role and find out if your candidate shares your views and will spend your money wisely. Your Healthcare. Your vote grants the governor, legislators, and Congress the right to take action and pass or reject laws that will determine your access to health care. Social Security. - Elected officials decide how much payroll tax is paid, your Medicare services and payments, cost of living increases, and benefit schedules for your Social Security pension. Safety of Your Neighborhood. Elected officials and judges make day to day decisions on laws that will affect your community, law enforcement, crime prevention, traffic patterns, and where to build schools, parks, and recreational places. Improving Your Highways. Take an active role deciding what highways are needed, what public transit to support and how the bill will be paid. Vote to elect people who will do something to fix the problems we face. An opportunity for change. Support the candidates and ballot measures that can help your community, state, and even the nation for the greater good. Make your voice heard in these elections. Communities are made up of friends, loved ones, and neighbors. Some may not know how important voting is, while others don't have the privilege. Make the decision to vote for yourself and those around you. Make sure your voice is heard - vote! (Source: Excerpts from https://actnow.org)

NEIGHBORHOOD NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MONTHLY BULLETIN: NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
Let us take a look at how a burglar thinks. I think you will be surprised and possibly recognize yourself or your property in some of their thoughts. Pay particular attention to #14. We will share some interesting comments from convicted burglars from four states in the United States, as well as an author, security consultant and a criminology professor. 1. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier. 2. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer on your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it. 3. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, do not let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it is set. That makes it too easy. 4. If it is raining and you are fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door-understandable, but understand this: I do not take a day off because of bad weather. 5. I always knock first. If you answer, I will ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.) 6. Do you really think I will not look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet. 7. You are right: I will not have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it is not bolted down, I will take it with me. 8. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you are reluctant to leave your TV on while you are out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. 9. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook. 10. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors. I will break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he will stop what he is doing and wait to hear it again. If he does not hear it again, he will just go back to what he was doing. It is human nature. 11. I am not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it? 12. I love looking in your windows. I am looking for signs that you are home and for the flat screen TVs or gaming systems I would like. I will drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets. 13. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It is easier than you think to look up your address. 14. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in fresh air. To me, it is an invitation. 15. If you do not answer when I knock, I will try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in. 16. Of course, I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator. Since the Middle Ages, families have been honoring their paternal bonds with well wishes, lavish gifts, and family gatherings. This year marks the 112th anniversary when Sonora Smart Dodd founded what we consider the tradition of Father's Day in America. While in various parts of the world it's held on different days and often in the months of March, May, and June, the goal is all the same, to honor fatherhood. Here are 12 interesting facts you may not have known about the holiday. •

Father's Day was founded on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA by Sonora Smart Dodd to honor her father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, for all his efforts as a single parent raising his six children. It wasn't until 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed into law a permanent recognition of Father's Day was established in the United States. According to Hallmark, Father's Day is the fourth-largest cardsending occasion with 72 million cards given every year. Consumer spending on Father's Day was expected to rise to an alltime record of close to $17 Billion in 2020. Census data shows there are more than 70.1 million dads in the United States. Two million fathers are single. More than 214,000 men are stay-at-home dads. In the 1970s, only six men identified as stay-at-home fathers. Today's fathers spend double the amount of time they spent with their kids in 1989, and almost triple the amount of time with their kids as fathers did back in 1965.
Below are some of history's favorite favors that were more than a necktie. • Halsey Taylor invented the drinking fountain in 1912 as a tribute to his father who succumbed to typhoid fever after drinking from a contaminated public water supply in 1896. • A. A. Milne created Winnie the Pooh for his son, Christopher Robin. Pooh was based on the teddy bear Christopher received for his first birthday as well as a bear named Willie at the London Zoo they would frequent on their father/son visits. • In 2001, Yuri Usachev, cosmonaut and commander of the International Space Station, received a talking picture frame from his 12-year-old daughter while in orbit. • The Stevie Wonder song “Isn't She Lovely” is about his newborn daughter, Aisha. If you listen closely, you can hear Aisha crying during the song. This weekend pick up the phone, send a loving note, or gather with family around the grill. However you decide to celebrate, show your loved one how much he means to you this Father's Day. (Source: Excerpts from Wesleychoice.org/12 interesting-facts-aboutfathers-day)

Technology Club Discusses iPhone Tips
On Thursday 5/5 over twenty-five (25) attendees participated in a discussion of useful iPhone tips. These tips present very valuable and useful ways to use the iPhone for important things. These tips are not unique or exclusive to iPhones but are also available on Android phones. Qung Go led the discussion on these tips including: 1) Creating Emergency Contacts (whom to contact in an emergency); 2) Clearing Cookies (for privacy and security; 3) Turn on Device Location Tracking (finding a lost iPhone); 4) Check App Subscriptions (spending too many $$ on apps); 5) Reduce Spam (blocking spam calls, especially election calls); 6) Add Covid Vaccination Information to the Apple Wallet (using QR codes); 7) Two Factor Authentication (using the iPhone for identity verification); 8) Add Legacy Contact (how to allow iPhone access after you pass). These tips are very useful and were also recommended by the Wall Street Journal technology expert. Again these functions and features are not exclusive to iPhones because there are equivalent functions for Android phones. Please join the next meeting on Thursday, June 2 when the topic will be an update on hydrogen as a fuel and solid state batteries for electric vehicles and hydrogen powered vehicles.

UKULELE STRUMMERS
Happy June from Sun City Aliante Ukulele Strummers! The Ukulele Strummers are continuing to have a blast playing ukulele together every Sunday afternoon. A few of our members were able to attend the Memphis Uke 'n Roll Jamboree in Memphis, Tennessee. The first night we all had a barbeque dinner together. We also had our first live and in person ukulele jam with Petey Mack (who led us for 400 days on Facebook Live during the pandemic) and listened to Petey Mack and several other Ukulele Artists entertain us. The braver attendees got up on stage and played and sang during the Open Mic time. The shyer attendees (like Judy and Chris) got up on stage and played a song with Pete and won the cherished rubber ducky autographed by Petey Mack for their contribution. The rest of the week we were treated to classes led by Ukulele Artists such as L'il Rev and Andrew Molina as well as more performances from local Ukulele Artists.
The Strummers who stayed here at home were treated to 3 Sunday afternoons of two hours of amazing strum-alongs led by Jerry, Pineapple and Dave. As usual we are continuing to offer three classes every Sunday and all classes have room for more strummers: Basic Ukulele: 12:00-12:30 PM: For student who have never played ukulele. Beginning Ukulele: 12:30- 1:25: For students who are just starting to play ukulele Advanced Ukulele: 1:30-2:30 pm. This class is for intermediate players who have attended ukulele classes here or with another instructor and know ten or more basic chords. We will learn one or two new songs a week, play through songs we know, and learn some special strumming techniques. We use Pete McCarty's August 2021free book of 400 songs for most of our music. It is located at this link :https://peteymack2.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/5/4/135404457/august_202 1.pdf If you are interested in joining us stop by a class or give me a call. Happy Strumming! JUNE 2022
CHARTERED CLUBS VETERANS AUXILIARY ARTICLE Congratulations to the new Veteran's Club Officers (l-r) Sondra Harrington, Secretary/Treasurer LeRoy Munson, Chairman and Patricia Goeppinger, Vice Chairman.
As many of you know, I just assumed the duties of Chairman of the Board for the Veteran's Club of Sun City Aliante in April 2022. It is TRULY an honor to be able to serve all the veterans, servicemembers, first responders, family members, and residents of Sun City Aliante, which the Veteran's Club represents. So, if you are a resident (everyone) Veteran or not of Sun City Aliante, we need you to volunteer! Become a member. What is Volunteering and why is it Important? As a quick refresher, volunteering-also known as volunteerism- is when you give your time to help another person's organization, or cause. Volunteer opportunities include both in person volunteering and virtual volunteering. They can also cover a wide range of areas, such as community development, education, health and wellness, helping children, and even transportation. Buy why is it important to volunteer? Here is one of the top reasons why you should become a volunteer in your community (Sun City Aliante). First, volunteering is important because it helps you make a difference in the world. Almost everyone says they want to make the world a better place, but volunteers are taking concrete actions to do just that. Whether it is cleaning up your neighborhood, tutoring students, helping a fundraising event, writing letters to officials, or any number of other crucial tasks volunteers perform, volunteering lets you truly impact the world and your community in a positive way. If you read nothing else, know that this is your club (It is for everyone). We want to hear from you about ideas to bring everyone together in a positive way and break down the walls of isolation.
