COMMUNITY CENTER NEW USAGE GUIDELINES SUN CITY ALIANTE - NEW COVID-19 GUIDELINES CLARK COUNTY COMMISSION LIFTS COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS ON JUNE 1 On Tuesday, May 18, the Clark County Commission decided to delete in its entirety the plan set and executed on May 1, 2021 and return to pre-pandemic guidelines, effective June 1. This means that restrictions involving masking, capacity limits, large gatherings, dancing, etc. will no longer be in effect. According to the county, fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any setting, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance. Masks will still be required on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States, and in United States transportation hubs, such as, airports and stations as referenced in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance. While it is still encouraged to get vaccinated and maintain social distancing when appropriate, we will return to normal capacity moving forward. The public is required to follow all applicable rules and regulations set forth by all state and local jurisdictions. The new CDC guidance on masks recommends that those who are

not vaccinated continue wearing masks and following social distancing and other precautions until fully vaccinated. The guidance allows fully vaccinated people to stop wearing face coverings in crowds and in many indoor locations. The new guidance at the federal, state and now local level allows private businesses and organizations to require patrons and employees to wear face coverings. "Public safety has been our priority from the beginning of the pandemic in accordance with guidance set by the CDC and the governor's directives," said Clark County Commission Chairman Marilyn Kirkpatrick. "Our community has made huge strides in containing the virus, and we will continue to work with all our partners to keep our caseloads and local hospital capacity in check. As we celebrate this milestone in getting back to normal life, we also want to remind our community that we need to continue looking out for the health and safety of each other. If you have not been vaccinated yet, please wear a mask and practice social distancing until you are. Getting vaccinated is the key to stopping COVID-19 and keeping our community safe," continued Chairman Kirkpatrick."

SUN CITY ALIANTE COMMUNITY CENTER REOPENS We are very excited to announce the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors has approved that the Community Center be fully reopened, effective Monday, May 24. We will move forward to resume all of our normal activities in line with the current CDC guidelines. If you have been fully vaccinated, you do not have to wear a face covering or socially distance. If you are not vaccinated, you should continue wearing a face covering and follow social distancing and other precautions until you are fully vaccinated.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello Residents, The votes have been counted and the results are in. There were a total of 527 homeowners who voted; however, 19 were rejected for one reason or another. A total of 26.9% of the whole community voted which was considerably down from the previous year's vote total.

Facilities Manager Juan Macias - 702-638-5009 jmacias@suncityaliante.us

There are several theories why there were less votes, but the bottom line is one quarter of eligible voters have elected Board members that will represent you on matters that have a direct bearing on how your money is spent and how your amenities will or will not affect your life. I choose to believe that the lower turnout signalizes your pleasure on how well your community is functioning. High voter turnouts generally signals displeasure and a desire to change the Board's makeup. I can assure you that your Board members will continue to make decisions that will keep you safe and spend your money wisely. Thank you to all who voted, and I look forward to a time very soon when we can resume normal activities and a resumption of a totally open community center.

WE ARE...

JUNE MESSAGE

BOARD MESSAGE BOARD MEETING

I hope this message finds everyone safe and well and coming out of the cocoon that we have wrapped ourselves in over these many intolerable months. As the song goes “June is busting out all over,” and hopefully, so too will Sun City Aliante.

Mark Smith

As Board liaison to and chairperson of, the Covenants Committee, I would like to thank all of our residents for abiding by our CC&Rs, and rules and regulations. This past year has seen, I believe, the fewest hearings that we have had in the fifteen years I have been on the Board.

During this time, when we have all been stressed to our breaking points, it is good to know that we can count on our community members to live up to their responsibilities. A huge “thank you” also goes to Nelenie Hernandez, our Assistant Manager and Director of Standards & Compliance, and Carol Garbarino, our Customer Service Coordinator, for doing such an outstanding job working with our residents to iron out any problems that come up without the need of summoning someone to a hearing. Great job one and all! Enjoy a great, safe, healthy, fun-filled summer, whether you stay at home and enjoy our amenities or leave for exciting places of fun-filled adventure. See you around the neighborhood!

On Wednesday, May 12, after three months of campaigning, holding the Candidate Forum, and answering resident inquiries, the candidates can now relax as the ballots were counted and the results are in. This year four candidates were vying for the three open positions on the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors. I would especially like to thank my Election Committee who made my job so much easier. They are Linda Egge, Kathryn Brandel, Kay Drewlo, Chris Wickliff, Sylvie Courtemarsh, and Renee Snodgrass. I would be remiss if I did not thank our General Manager, Damian Carrasco, his assistant, Nelenie Hernandez, Debbie Kent, Trish Williamson, Lori Daniels, and Juan Macias and his staff for all their assistance. We could not have pulled it off without you.

Dear Residents, As of this writing, here is the most recent update on the COVID-19 guidance. On May 1, COVID-19 mitigation measures were transferred to local authorities, and each Nevada county worked with the COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force and finalized plans for their transition. The local Clark County plan proposed that occupancy be increased to 80 percent with three (3) feet social distancing. After reviewing the Clark County Damian Carrasco recommendations, the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors made several changes that were put into effect on May 3. They include: •

Opened the Grand View Room and the Fireplace Room areas to allow residents to sit and enjoy our million-dollar view. No reservation is needed.

•

Moved the room capacities to 80 percent with three-feet social distancing, which permitted more residents to enjoy the Community Center.

•

Expanded fitness classes to accommodate more people.

•

Opened the Spa. Residents can reserve 30 minutes, one person at a time or two from the same household.

•

Allowed more clubs to return.

•

Reinstated our Lunch 'n' Learn and “Snack 'n' Learn seminars, starting in mid-June.

•

Reinstated our movies to twice a month, starting in June.

•

Changed the quarantine period in the Library from 4 days to 24 hours.

•

Reopened the coffee machines and water fountains for use.

•

Permitted residents to register house guests for activities.

•

Approved allowing residents playing sports to remove their face coverings if they are actively exercising, practicing, or participating in a sport's competition.

As of this writing, Face Coverings are still required to be worn in and outside the Community Center except for the following times:

At the May 12 Board of Directors Meeting, the Board approved the return of the Poker Club and expanded the number of players per session for the Table Tennis and the Billiard Clubs. We are excited about the opportunity to open even more, hopefully, in the near term, and to offer as many events as possible. We have started working on activities, excursions, movies, and Lunch 'n' Learns. Our goal is to resume the amazing activities and events we offered to residents over the years prior to COVID-19. As new guidance is given from the Clark County Commission, the Board of Directors will review it and make changes that are in the best interest of the health, safety, and welfare of our residents and team members. As we move into summer this month, stay safe and have fun. Damian Carrasco Community Manager Sun City Aliante

Please remember to refrain from feeding wildlife in our community. I have received several complaints about residents leaving bowls of food and water in their backyards and/or hand feeding pigeons. Please understand this is a Health, Safety, and Welfare issue. Health officials say a single pigeon can produce up to 25 pounds of droppings in a single year. Their droppings can be toxic and can carry diseases. According to the Code of Ordinances, City of North Las Vegas, 6.10.030 – Restrictions on the keeping of birds and fowl: “Except as otherwise provided in this code, no person may keep, or permit to be kept on premises over which such person has control; … 3. Any fowl or bird that is not at all times confined within a suitable enclosure or coop; 5. Any fowl or bird in any enclosure or coop that is not kept clean and free of offensive odors.” In addition, 6.10.050 – Keeping or exhibiting of wild animals, states “No person may exhibit in public or keep on public or private property any wild animal.” The approved paint color schemes for the outside of your home may be obtained by scanning a QR code that can be found on the community website www.suncityaliante.org If you plan to change the color schemes, you must submit a Home Improvement Application to the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). However, if you opt to paint it with the existing color schemes, then there is NO need to apply. Please visit Carol in the Customer Service Office to see the approved color schemes for the community if you do not have access to a computer to see the QR code on the website. Please remind your paint company vendors that any advertising material may not be placed anywhere on the property unless they are doing work. No advertising signs shall be left overnight on the property. June is a good month to get out into the yard and make sure your trees, shrubs, desert plants are trimmed properly. Trees should be trimmed 5' from the soil to the first branch and back to your property lines and off the streets and sidewalks; all landscapes should be trimmed back from the mailbox. If you have a neighbor's tree branches or shrubs encroaching onto your property, please send a picture to my email address; so, we can send a courtesy notice letting them know that maintenance is due. If you have any questions, please contact me at 702-638-5006 or assistantmanager@suncityaliante.us. Happy Father's Day to all our fathers! LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

JUNE 2021

COUNCILMAN RICHARD CHERCHIO

Dear Residents,

Hello Everyone,

Welcome Back! We are so happy to fully reopen.

I try to write these articles as far in advance as possible, and it just so happens that I am writing this one on Mother's Day. So, let me start off by saying I hope all of our moms had a great day, with many more to come!

We are so excited that the Board of Directors has approved bringing back our Lunch 'n' Learn Program. We will reintroduce the Lunch 'n' Learn, and Snack 'n' Learn program in mid-June starting with two seminars per week. Please see details on page 20 where we list the dates, times, and topics. Please call the Front Desk to make reservations. If you cannot attend, please notify the Front Desk; so, we can invite someone from our waiting list. We will also continue to feature a page with Watch 'n' Learn Webinars. This issue features articles and photos related to our residents' experiences. I think you will enjoy reading about Glenn and Martha Bernstein's exciting expedition cruise to the site of the sinking of the RMS Titanic to watch the raising of the ship's hull and other artifacts. You will learn about survivors and view unique photographs. Chris Wickliff and Judy Smith both recall their experiences during the COVID-19 lockdown, and we have additional submissions from residents in the Resident Spotlight section. This month's theme for our photo album pages is “Cherished Memories.” We invited residents to submit a photo related to their high school graduation. We used the tagline, “… We'll remember always Graduation Day,” a song composed by Joe Sherman with lyrics by Noel. It was a 1956 hit song by the Four Freshman. Enjoy seeing your friends and neighbors. On June 14, we celebrate Flag Day. This day commemorates the adoption of the Stars & Stripes as the official flag of the United States (featured on our cover). Americans celebrate Flag Day by displaying the Red, White, and Blue in front of their homes and businesses. In June 1777, when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating, “the flag the United States shall be 13 stripes, alternating red and white” and that “the union shall be 13 stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation.” Over 100 years later, President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary of the decree by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day. We celebrate Father's Day on June 20. The nation's first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. However, it was not until 1972 – 58 years after President Wilson made Mother's Day official – that the day honoring fathers became a nationwide holiday in the United States. If you have any questions, please email me at twilliamson@suncityaliante.us or call 702-429-1623.

I planned to explain our new diversionary court program for homeless and veterans this month, but because the construction of phase one of The Villages of Tule Springs is now on the horizon, I want to once again go over some of the specifics of that agreement, along with what that means to our Sun City residents, both in general and for those whose backyards face the Clayton Street alignment. I recently went on a tour with D. R. Horton, who purchased the land for the entire first phase of The Villages of Tule Springs, to visit the proposed model homes that will be built along the east wall of Sun City from Grand Teton Drive to Elkhorn Road. First, I wanted to ensure you that we will be getting what we had agreed to years ago: good quality, single-family homes on the lots in that portion of the development. After viewing those models, I sincerely believe the new houses will complement our community, both in design and value. Prices start in the $400,000 range for these homes. Also, since the land along the wall and eastward is generally lower, there should be no concern about those residents being able to see into the backyards of those living along Homing Pigeon Street. Besides, the backyards are larger, so the home itself will be further away. To put this into perspective, the proposed lot sizes are 60 feet x 117 feet. Phase One was always designed to be the higher-end homes, including estate homes from $600,000. There will be multiple models in Phase One, but there will not be any apartments. All of the above were concerns shared with me over the years, and I brought those concerns to the builder as a condition of my support. As soon as we can have meetings in the Vista Room, we will have D.R. Horton and their staff, including the city staff who was involved with the traffic study, attend to answer any questions and show everyone the models. The proposed timeline, so far, is to have the first home go vertical by this time next year in May. I will monitor this, as we go forward, to ensure compliance per our requests and concerns. Meanwhile, anyone can visit the models I mentioned above, which are currently being built in Valley Vista. They are located between Farm Road and Elkhorn Road, and the single-story model homes are called "Alpha Pointe” and “Orion."

A special thank you to everyone who has contributed to our Resident Spotlight. I want to encourage all of you to keep sending your special photos and short blurbs for this section of our magazine.

Since this is my June article, I want to close by wishing my fellow dads a very happy and healthy Father's Day!

In closing, I wish all our Dads, a very Happy Father's Day!

Until we talk next time, be safe!

UPDATE ON CONSTRUCTION IN THE ALIANTE AREA

ASSOCIATION NEWS

WHEN YOU'VE BEEN FULLY VACCINATED

By Mark Pallans LOT BEHIND THE ARCO STATION – There will be approximately 200 upscale rental apartments for families and singles built on the back of the lot behind the new ARCO Station. Construction will probably begin this summer. The property IS NOT part of the Aliante community. The original plot maps indicate it was carved out of what could have been part of the Master Association. The Association will be responsible for maintaining the landscaping on Elkhorn, and the property owner will be responsible for the landscaping along Aliante Parkway, except for the street side of that landscaping which will be Aliante's responsibility. The City of North Las Vegas and the property owner were informed, that because the residents of the apartments will not be Aliante residents, they would not be able to use the Aliante amenities, such as the period festivals and park events. The property owner then agreed to pay an annual fee to the Master Association that would prevent any denial of access to our events. The property also has room for a small strip center and the City of North Las Vegas is looking for a restaurant as one of the tenants. THE VILLAGES OF TULE SPRINGS - The Villages are located to the east of Sun City Aliante. The development has been growing for the past seven to eight years. The original homes were built south of the 215 around Revere and North 5th Street. It begins further east on the north side of 215, but no development has started there. The current development, known as parcels 1.01 and 1.02, start just east of Clayton between Elkhorn and Grand Teton on the east side of the street; so, these parcels will not butt up to Sun City Aliante. The property's perimeter will start at Grand Teton and move south along Clayton for about one-third of the distance between Grand Teton and Clayton. At that point, Clayton turns southeast but their property continues straight down to Elkhorn. That portion will butt up to Sun City Aliante. It will all be single-family homes. Most of the lots will be about double the size of Sun City Aliante lots, and the homes will be much larger than ours. The density of that property is about half the number of homes per acre than Sun City Aliante.

People are considered fully vaccinated: • •

Two weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or, Two weeks after a single dose of vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson's Janssen vaccine

What You Should Keep Doing For now, if you've been fully vaccinated: • You should still take steps to protect yourself and others in many situations, like wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet apart from others, and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces. Take these precautions whenever you are in public; gathering with unvaccinated people from more than one household; visiting with unvaccinated people who are at increased risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19. • •

• •

You should still avoid medium or large-sized gatherings. If you travel, you should still take steps to protect yourself and others. You will still be required to wear a mask on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States, and in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations. Fully vaccinated international travelers arriving in the United States are still required to get tested within 3 days of their flight (or show documentation of recovery from COVID-19 in the past 3 months) and should still get tested 3-5 days after their trip. You should still watch out for symptoms of COVID-19, especially if you've been around someone who is sick. If you have symptoms of COVID-19, you should get tested and stay home and away from others. You will still need to follow guidance at your workplace.

What We Know and What We're Still Learning • •

We know that COVID-19 vaccines are effective at preventing COVID19 disease, especially severe illness and death. We're still learning how effective the vaccines are against variants of the virus that causes COVID-19. Early data show the vaccines may work against some variants but could be less effective against others. We know that other prevention steps help stop the spread of COVID-19, and that these steps are still important, even as vaccines are being distributed. We're still learning how well COVID-19 vaccines keep people from spreading the disease. Early data show that the vaccines may help keep people from spreading COVID-19, but we are learning more as more people get vaccinated. We're still learning how long COVID-19 vaccines can protect people. As we know more, CDC will continue to update our recommendations for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

In 2006, another developer bought all the land that is now The Villages of Tule Springs (east and west of us); the development was to be called Park Highlands. The developer wanted to rename Elkhorn to Park Highlands Blvd. After strong opposition to the proposal, the City of North Las Vegas agreed there would be no name changes and guaranteed that whatever was built in the future would reflect well on Sun City Aliante, and the blocks adjacent to Sun City Aliante would, at a minimum, reflect the zoning rules of our community. To that end, the first block east of our community would be at least as restrictive as Sun City Aliante, which means the only single-story building will be permitted on the first block nearest us. That agreement is still in place.

• •

When it comes to construction, be prepared for about a year of bulldozers, cranes, backup alarms on construction vehicles, and LOTS OF ANNOYING DUST. And you probably will not need an alarm clock to be awakened at 6 a.m.

Until we know more about those questions, everyone-even people who've had their vaccines-should continue taking steps to protect themselves and others when recommended.

Mark Pallans is a Director on the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors. He has been and remains a strong advocate for the community and works closely with the City of North Las Vegas.

COMMITTEE NEWS

JUNE 2021

NEIGHBORHOOD NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MONTHLY BULLETIN:

COMMITTEES

[ [ ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE

Meets every other Friday, 8:30 a.m. Harlan Nelson at hnelson867@cox.net

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

For quite a long time, we've talked about the fact that we need more Neighborhood Watch Block Captains in our community. Why is that? Your Block Captain has been fingerprinted and has had a criminal history background check done by the North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD). One of the first things a new Block Captain learns is that they are the “eyes and ears” of the NLVPD. They can report any suspicious activity they might witness to the police. They can inform you of things going on in Sun City Aliante and in our community of North Las Vegas. How will they do that? If you fill out a Community Watch Family Data Sheet given to you by your Block Captain, you have an opportunity to provide them with your email address and a phone number. They might also knock on your door and speak to you in person. What other information is on the Family Data Sheet? We ask for your name, address, home and cell phone numbers. Your cell number is the best way to contact you, if for instance, you left home and forgot to close your garage door. If we have your cell number, we can call you to tell you. You might be surprised how often this happens. If we cannot reach you, Securitas or the police might be called. An open garage door is an invitation to a burglar, and how would you know that someone hasn't already entered your home? Additional information gathered on the data sheet includes names of other residents in your home, the make, model, and color of your vehicle(s). You might also choose to provide basic medical history of the people living in your home, which might be helpful if you become ill. One of the most important things included on the form is your emergency contact information. This can be a neighbor or a family member. It could be useful if you are out of town and we cannot reach you (after spotting something like a water leak or broken window at your home). We would then attempt to call your emergency contact. All information is confidential and goes no further than the Neighborhood Watch Coordinator. You should also consider giving your emergency contact the phone number of your Block Captain. If you do not have a Block Captain, you or a family member can contact our Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Jim Blossey. His contact information is listed below. Not everyone has family close by and this might come in handy if a family member cannot reach you. Neighborhood Watch is here to look out for all our neighbors, and Jim is looking out for all of us. PATROL COMMITTEE One of the future goals of the Sun City Aliante Patrol will be enlisting the help of all residents to be our “eyes on the street,” meaning that neighbors will be asked to maintain casual diligence over our neighborhood. We encourage neighbors to watch for any unusual behavior whenever they look out their windows, sit on their patio or take walks in the neighborhood. From the standpoint of public safety, such vigilance usually is considered a positive sign for a community. Taking this volunteer activity one step further, Sun City Aliante has a volunteer Neighborhood Watch program and a proposed Sun City Aliante mobile patrol. The Sun City Aliante patrol, if approved, will systematically cover neighborhood streets and Association property while also assisting our residents as needed. Being a Patrol or Neighborhood Watch volunteer is a priceless gift of commitment to Sun City Aliante. Consider Joining the Sun City Patrol and giving back to the community a portion of your time and talents. For more information regarding the Sun City Aliante Patrol, contact Patrol Chairman Phil Zanello at zp9@aol.com or 702-460-9582. Phil Zanello Chairman, Patrol Committee

BERNSTEINS EXPERIENCE TITANIC EXPEDITION By Trish Williamson

yacht, 'the Sundowner,'” noted Glenn. “Lightoller is credited with saving 130 lives at Dunkirk on June 4, 1940.”

The Bernsteins cruised on the ship in the background; the vessel in the foreground was used to bring up the hull of the Titanic. Photos by Glenn Bernstein

“It is not often that one can witness history, but to become part of living history, as it is happening, is extraordinary,” said Sun City Aliante resident Glenn Bernstein, a longtime member of the Titanic Historical Society. In 1996, Glenn and his wife, Martha, went on an expedition cruise to the site of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. They wanted to witness the raising of the famous hull plate and the recovery of artifacts found at the bottom of the North Atlantic near the wreckage. “It was a one-week trip, and we sat anchored in the North Atlantic. All the cabins were equipped with closed-circuit video, which was Glenn and Martha are shown in front of the Suez Canal. being shot in the submarine canvassing the site. We also met people directly connected to the Titanic tragedy,” explained Glenn. “We first met Ann Lightoller, the Great Granddaughter of Second Officer Charles Herbert Lightoller, the most senior member of the crew who survived the sinking of the Titanic by a freak accident,” continued Glenn. “According to Ann, her grandfather was in charge of lowering the lifeboats and collapsible boats on the port side. After all the lifeboats were lowered, the Titanic took a big plunge forward, Lightoller went overboard. He found himself being dragged underwater, but suddenly a blast of hot air from the shaft blew him up to the surface, and he found himself next to a collapsible boat he had just launched. Lightoller scrambled on top of the boat and rescued some 30 other people and taught them how to shift their Ann Lightoller on the expedition cruise. weight to prevent the vessel from capsizing. They were minutes away from sinking when the Titanic survivors were hoisted onto the Carpathia, a passenger steamship that responded to the distress calls,” added Glenn. “Decades later at the age of 66, Lightoller and his son, Roger, volunteered to assist in the evacuation of Dunkirk with their motor

Another person Glenn met on the cruise was Eleanor Johnson Shuman, one of 705 survivors of the Titanic, who was only 18 months old when she escaped in the arms of her mother. “Due to accidental good fortune of my opening a door, I was invited to a private family meeting with Eleanor and five generations of her family,” Glenn said. “According to Eleanor, her mother, Alina Backberg Johnson, her brother, Harold, and she boarded the Titanic as third-class passengers. A steward, who had befriended them, helped them escape in one of the last lifeboats, probably number 15. Most of Eleanor's story was from her mother's memories of the sinking. Her father was not on the Titanic.”

Eleanor has several reasons she wanted to go on the expedition. “Eleanor told us that she wanted to bring her family so that they would know what cruising is like,” continued Glenn. “She wanted to see the site for her own memory and supported bringing up artifacts, as long as they were not taken from inside the Titanic. Also, she wanted to have a memorial service for her dad and everyone who perished on April 15, 1912, and see everyone honor those who lost their lives. “At exactly the moment the Titanic sunk, the ship had a memorial service in the early morning hours. Children dropped flowers on the site and Eleanor tossed a wreath in memory of her dad,” Glenn recalled. “During the 1950s, Eleanor, her mother, and brother were guests at the screening for “Titanic” (1953) and “A Night to Titanic survivor Eleanor Johnson Shuman Remember” (1958). She was a guest of honor at two screenings of “Titanic” (1997), experiences she said were emotionally draining. She is also the only Titanic survivor that James Cameron met.” As you can probably surmise, Glenn and Martha are passionate about travel. They have journeyed extensively throughout the United States and all seven continents. They prefer land tours where they have free time to explore and meet people. Their favorite trip was through a cultural exchange program sponsored by the National Geographic Society to the island of Cuba. Glenn is also passionate about photography. The Bernsteins moved to Sun City Aliante six years ago from Fairfax County, Virginia. Glenn retired from George Washington University after being employed with the University for 36 years in Management Information Systems. Martha worked for 40 years in a government position with the Office of Personnel Management. Shown here are personal belongings of Second Officer Charles Herbert Lightoller shared by his great granddaughter Ann Lightoller.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JIM PARKER…99 YEARS YOUNG!

Here is another active senior day at Sun City Aliante despite COVID-19. We enjoyed the outdoors and had fun playing Bocce Ball. It was a new challenge for all of us: Janice & Rodger Wedgeworth, Jane and Warren Geller, and Mary and Bill. This is our friend bubble. We all know how fortunate we are to live in this wonderful community.

Thanks to Veterans Club member Richard Lawhead for organizing a Drive-by Birthday Celebration for resident Jim Parker who enjoyed his 99th birthday on March 26. Many friends and neighbors came by to celebrate with Jim, including Lifestyle Director Debbie Kent and Associate Jan Davis. In 2019, the Veterans Club honored Jim for his extraordinary service in the U. S.

My Ukulele Journey My husband, Kevin, played ukulele and took lessons for three years when we lived and worked in California. He raved about how fun it was, but I was a busy engineering manager; so, I did not even try it. When we retired and moved to Sun City Aliante (hurrah!) my husband started the Sun City Aliante Ukulele Strummers Special Interest Group (along with Jill Ramsey). I no longer had an excuse not to try it. I was very intimidated, at first, because I had played clarinet and alto saxophone in high school but never a stringed instrument. Long, story short: by the end of 2019, I was having a lot of fun in class! Kevin's class was so popular that he had expanded the group to include a beginning and an intermediate ukulele class. We were all having such a great time with the ukulele, playing, and singing with the Uke group and making good progress. During the pandemic in 2020, ukulele literally saved my sanity. Like all of us I was suddenly faced with the cancelling of literally all my favorite activities, including Songsters, Ukulele Strummers, Hand and Foot, and even the gym. I will not elaborate, as all of you have lived through it. Kevin and I played occasionally, but I missed all my friends in the Ukulele Strummers. Thankfully, a few weeks into the pandemic some ukulele artists decided to have an online Ukulele Festival. The festival was so fun, but artists were so good that it was intimidating to me. However, during the festival, there was one player named Pete McCarty who lived in Tennessee and led a jam session. Pete was so funny and a lot of fun to play along with. At the end of his part of the festival, he mentioned he had a free book of 250 ukulele songs that we could download. He told us he had been leading a jam session on Facebook live and was probably going to lead it daily through the pandemic! Kevin and I had been looking for some great playable music; so, this was a dream come true! And long story short (too late) my husband and I have been playing along with Pete McCarty and his online group daily for more than 330 days as of this writing. We have been learning so much, meeting wonderful people and having a ton of fun playing Pete's music! I want you all to know that Ukulele people are some of the most wonderful people in the world and playing ukulele may be the most fun you have ever had! If you are interested in learning ukulele and being part of a fun global community, you can join the Ukulele Strummers, and you can also follow Pete McCarty on Facebook and be part of our global virtual community. Pete would love to get to know you, and so would we!

Ukulele and the Pandemic I think we all have high hopes of good things to happen as we begin a new year; and for me, 2020 was no different. After attending the Songsters' Holiday Concert in December 2019 and seeing a group play ukuleles, I thought that looked like fun. In January, I joined the Sun City Aliante Ukulele Strummers, a group led by Kevin Smith. We met on Sunday afternoons and Kevin was instrumental in starting me on a journey that will, hopefully, last the rest of my life. I had three lessons on the ukulele Kevin loaned me, and then I bought one of my own. In early February, my husband, Wick, and I left for what was to be my dream trip to Australia and New Zealand. We toured Australia for a week, and then boarded a ship in Sydney, Australia to cruise for six weeks back to San Diego, visiting New Zealand, the South Pacific and Hawaii. As we boarded the ship, the gal in front of us was carrying what looked like an ukulele in a case. I introduced myself and asked if that was indeed an ukulele. Of course, it was, and we exchanged cabin numbers; we both were excited to maybe play a few songs over the coming weeks on sea days. You see, my new friend was a ukulele group leader in her community in British Columbia, just as Kevin is here in Aliante. When I told her I was just a beginner, she was more than happy to teach me some chords and new songs. We played for an hour every day on sea days. When we discovered another gal on the ship, who was even newer at the ukulele than I was, we took her under our wing and taught her the basics. Also, on our cruise, we met a group of Tahitians vacationing together who played ukuleles, danced the hula and could sing for hours and hours. Although the Tahitians spoke mostly Tahitian and French, music was our universal language, as they say. This was one of the highlights of the trip. Mid-March came, and as you in Aliante lived through the beginning of the lockdown from Covid 19, our cruise came to an official end at the same time, out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Even though we had no cases of COVID-19 on our ship, no country, not even our own, would accept our ship to let us disembark and fly home. For the next three weeks, we were safe, healthy, well fed and played ukulele every day, as every day was now a sea day. We did sail to Honolulu where we were docked for a day to take on fuel and provisions for the remainder of the trip. It was sad to not be allowed to get off the ship in such a beautiful place, but it was understandable that the Hawaiian authorities were afraid we would bring COVID-19 to Hawaii. We finally arrived safely in San Diego after missing half of the ports on our cruise. All in all, it was still a wonderful trip. Since returning home, I've discovered a whole ukulele community on Facebook, YouTube and Zoom. So, for me, the years 2020 was a time of learning to play an instrument and continuing to grow my skills, not necessarily well, but I had fun with it. It's different playing in front of a computer screen than with a group of friends where you can play, sing and interact with each other. I look forward to the day when the Aliante Ukulele Strummers can once again meet and play at our Community Center. ~ Submitted by By Chris Wickliff

EXERCISE AT HOME TO BEAT COVID-19 By Dr. Brian A. Davis A recent study by Kaiser Permanente tracked almost 50,000 adults who contracted COVID-19, and grouped them by the amount of exercise they did in a week. The group that logged the least amount of physical activity was found to be twice as likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19, and two and a half times as likely to die, as opposed to those who did 30 minutes of exercise five times a week. But not everybody has access to a gym, and with the onset of the Las Vegas summer, outdoor exercise can be problematic. So, what can you do? Walk outdoors with some caveats For many people, walking is the best overall exercise. It's easy, available, and affordable. The best time to beat the desert heat is in the early morning and late at night, so you need to become an earlybird or a night owl. Start out slow and increase your pace and distance when it feels right, and find a shady place to cool down afterward. If you prefer walking before sunrise or after sunset, make certain that you wear reflective gear, such as a vest, that is created specifically to protect pedestrians. Dehydration is the chief danger associated with summer exercise, and it can put you at risk for heat stroke. The American Heart Association says to watch out for the warning signs, which include dry or sticky mouth, dry cool skin, headaches, muscle cramps, and lack of urination or dark urine. More advanced dehydration can cause dry or shriveled skin, irritability or confusion, dizziness, fatigue, and rapid heartbeat and breathing. A simple way to monitor hydration can include weighing yourself before and after exercise. Explore possibilities in the Great Indoors If you prefer to exercise in climate-controlled comfort, there are many things you can do that will get you feeling better by getting up off the couch, away from the TV, and bring joy and purpose to your housecleaning chores. Walking isn't just an outside activity - try putting some music on and making a brisk 10-15-minute tour of your house two or three times a day, including climbing stairs. And since nobody's looking, you can even break into a dance. Jumping rope is excellent aerobic exercise, and it doesn't require special equipment. There is a universe of exercise videos out there - from yoga to martial arts to weightlifting -

many of which you can stream for free. Peloton, Gold's Gym, Crunch Fitness, and CorePower Yoga all offer free apps and videos. And if you have a home cardio machine such as a treadmill or stationary bike, you already have a great foundation for an indoor exercise program. If you can, go to a local indoor mall to walk around (wearing a mask, of course). This will allow you to walk longer distance in a climate-controlled environment during the hottest months. DIY home fitness regimens Most of us don't have the luxury of a weight bench in the garage or a treadmill in the basement. But with a little ingenuity, you can convert household items into exercise tools. Water bottles, canned goods, books, and gallon jugs of water can help you pump up your muscles like weights at the gym. Here are some more ideas: • • • • •

Fill a backpack with water bottles or books to add resistance to your routine. Tie old pantyhose in a loop and use them as resistance bands. Do your bench press with a large bag of dog or cat food. Get up and down off the couch repeatedly to replace squats. Use your chair to stretch. This is a good option if you have mobility issues.

If circuit training is your thing, you can set up stations in your home where you can do calisthenics such as jumping jacks, push-ups (against a wall, counter-top, or the floor), sit-ups, and squats, and even some strength training with jugs of water, etc. Moving from one station to the next in rapid succession will surely help you break a sweat and feel the burn. Want to get your house in better shape along with your body? Try setting up a cardio housecleaning routine. Put on some upbeat music, set a timer, and then get busy running the vacuum, mopping the kitchen floor, and cleaning the shower stall top to bottom. This is a great way to get kids involved and away from their screens too. Ultimately, exercise is a form of medicine. Any form of exercise you accomplish, whether on the court, outdoors, in a gym, or at your home, will help build your body's strength, keep your cardiovascular system fit, and can help to prevent or manage chronic illness. Don't let the heat or COVID-19 be an excuse to not exercise. Get up and get moving! Remember to discuss any new physical activity with your trusted provider before beginning a new exercise regimen. * The information provided in this article is general in nature. JUNE 2021

CHARTERED CLUBS VETERANS AUXILIARY

VETERANS CLUB OF SUN CITY ALIANTE

Mark and Lynda Towers enjoy the picnic at Horses 4 Heroes.

Happy Father's Day! The Veterans Auxiliary wishes you all good health and happiness this summer. The Veterans Auxiliary joined the members of the Veterans Club who sponsored a picnic at Horses 4 Heroes Family Equestrian Center on April 24.

Congratulations to the newly elected Board Officers of the Veterans Club. Shown (l-r) are Treasurer, Tina Johnson; Vice-Chair, Mark Hollander; Chair, David Hollander and Secretary, Shelia Cohen.

Can you believe summer is upon us already? We are on our way to a great second half of the year. It is wonderful to see our city opening back up, and people getting back to their normal way of life again. It feels great being able to see more family and friends. Although, the club did not have the Pancake Breakfast or May Picnic this year, it is now looking better for the Spaghetti Dinner this November. The Veterans Recognition Wall has been completed. We thank the Sun City Lifestyle Committee for your support in pushing this through. We honored Mr. Jim Parker as our first inductee for the Veterans Recognition Wall. Thank you, Richard Lawhead, for putting together Mr. Parker's photo and pre-rip cord parachute that was mounted and displayed. For those who are not aware, Mr. Parker flew over 50 combat missions. He never had to use his parachute during WWII. It is such an honor to live in a community with so many heroes, such as Jim. Thank you, Debra Kent, for placing his tribute up so quickly for the Veterans Club.

Sy Nielson's band, The Bluegrass Believers, performed during the Veterans Picnic at Horses 4 Heroes Family Equestrian Center.

The Auxiliary now has a plaque hanging on the Wall of Honor, which lists the names of past and present Co-Chairs of the Auxiliary. The Veterans Auxiliary is still collecting coupons for our Veterans and their families proudly serving overseas. If you are interested in saving coupons, please cut, and separate them (food, non-food, and pet). The coupons could be good even if they are expired up to six months. Please bring them to the Vista Room in the Sun City Aliante Community Center on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. The Veterans Auxiliary will not meet in July and August. We look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting on September 21. The Auxiliary meets every 3rd Tuesday at 9 a.m. in the Sun City Aliante Vista Room.

We are still taking orders for Commemorative Bricks for placement at the Veterans Memorial Monument. It is such an honor seeing it and paying homage to all past and present Veterans and loved ones. For more information, please contact Sy Nielson at (702) 234-9183. Thank you, Sy. Armed Forces Military Veterans & First Responders Appreciation Day is still on schedule for Saturday, October 16 at Craig Ranch Regional Park. I will update you soon on all the events currently being booked. For more information, please call (702) 321-1075. The Veterans Club is also debating when to have the Dedication for the Veterans Memorial Monument and next Flag Retirement Ceremony. Once we have been given the okay, we will let you know. Stay tuned! The Veterans Club will not meet in July and August. We will pick it back up again on September 21 at 6 p.m. in the Vista Room. We cannot wait to see all of you again. Please remember, we welcome everyone. You do not have to be a Veteran to join us. Our Club meets the third Tuesday of each month in the Vista Room at 6 p.m. OUR NEXT MEETING IS JUNE 15 AT 6 p.m. Stay well and be safe! Sincerely,
