MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Hello Friends,

Community Center 702-638-5065 Monday - Saturday 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. Sunday 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.

I will make a wager that you have little if any idea what the President of your Board of Directors is responsible for and what qualities are needed to be a good President.

First Service Residential 702-399-4273 - www.fsresidential.com

The obvious duties surround the monthly Board meetings. This is perhaps the most important role on your Board and requires someone with leadership skills, objectivity, and level-headedness. Familiarity with the mechanics of running effective meetings is also crucial.

Among your Board president's responsibilities during meetings are: • • • • • • • •

Presiding over the meeting Calling the meeting to order Announcing the agenda Proposing questions Calling votes Announcing outcomes Recognizing speakers to the floor A great President should be committed to the association, be attentive to detail, be consistent, have pride in the President's role, be honest and fair, and have leadership skills.

In addition to Board meetings, the president serves as the primary authority on the rules and documents governing your association and may appoint committees if dictated by our bylaws. The president also is responsible for executing contracts and is charged with being the main contact with your community association management company. A person in this role should be very familiar with your community and its diverse needs. The bulk of my time is spent interacting with the community General Manager, Damian Carrasco. We meet when updates and new business decisions need to be made, which can be in excess of 3 days a week. Contractually, the President shall have the authority regarding issues relating to any matters dealing with the management of the association. If the President is unavailable, the Vice President is deemed to have the authority. This article was originally written at the end of April when the results of the vote for new Board members had not been announced. I had no idea if I would be elected to another 2-year term, and I certainly did not know if the Board of Directors would re-elect me as your President for the 6th year in a row. Well, you did re-elect me, and the Board of Directors again asked me to lead the Association as President. I want you to know what an honor it has been and continues to be to serve you all. It has been a sincere privilege to act on your behalf these last 8 years, and I will always be grateful to have earned your trust and will continue to feel that way as we look to the future. Respectfully submitted, Warren M. Geller President, Sun City Aliante Board of Directors

WE ARE...

COMMUNITY MGR WELCOME BACK TO OUR PRECOVID-19 COMMUNITY CENTER We are very excited that the Board of Directors approved fully reopening the Community Center effective, Monday, May 24. We reopened one hundred percent in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.

Damian Carrasco

This means that all fully vaccinated residents and their guests no longer have to wear a face covering or physically distance when visiting the Community Center. If you are not vaccinated, please continue to wear a face mask and follow social distancing guidelines and other precautions until you are fully vaccinated.

We have also extended the Community Center's Operating Hours in the evening on Monday through Saturday by one hour. Instead of closing at 8 p.m., we will close at 9 p.m. This will provide more time for Clubs and Special Interest Groups to resume their activities. The Sunday hours of operation will remain the same, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. We are ready to welcome everyone back to the Community Center to enjoy the new spaces and participate in our activities, events, seminars and over 40 chartered Club and Special Interest Groups. In June, we resumed our Lunch 'n' Learn Seminars, free movie nights, excursions and held an onsite concert featuring Freddie B and his Band. In the months to come, you can look forward to many amazing events, concerts, excursions, seminars, all the things you really enjoy. We will also host a special event in September to celebrate the reopening of the Community Center and the completion of the Expansion and Enclosure Project. We have completed and are currently working on several projects that will enhance the common areas and the Community Center including: • • •

• • • •

Signage/Lighting - Refurbished and added LED lighting to the Sun City Aliante sign adjacent to the fountain and waterfall. Telephone System – Installed a new telephone system and brandnew modern phones with the latest technology. MicroShield 360 – For a second time, MicroShield 360 applied a specialized chemical spray to all contact surfaces and touch points throughout the Community Center. The company said that after the spray was applied, it would not permit viruses to adhere to these surfaces. Parking Lot – In July, we will be repairing the cracks in the asphalt and restriping the parking spaces. Landscaping – Planting new landscaping in the front of the Community Center. Lighting – Working on Installing lighting to highlight the Veteran's Wall inside the Community Center. Lighting - In July, we will be Installing additional lighting at Widewing Park.

In addition, we are very excited the Board approved the restart of the Sun City Aliante Patrol. All interested residents and past patrol volunteers are invited to join the Patrol and get personally involved in protecting the interests of Sun City Aliante residents. For more information about the Patrol, please contact Phil Zanello at 702-460-9592 or email ZP9@aol.com

Finally, we are proud to announce that Sun City Aliante has been nominated by the Community Associations Institute (CAI) as the Southern Nevada Outstanding Large Association of the Year for 2020. This is the third consecutive year Sun City Aliante has been nominated for this prestigious award (“the CAI Oscar”). The previous two years Sun City Aliante won the award. In addition, Sun City Aliante President of the Board of Directors, Warren Geller, has been nominated as the Southern Nevada Association Board Member of the Year and I have been nominated as the Onsite Manager of the Year. Congratulations to the Board of Directors and staff of team members for this accomplishment. The winner will be announced on July 16 during the CAI Annual Gala at Red Rock Resort. Have a safe and enjoyable July 4th. Damian Carrasco Community Manager, Sun City Aliante

BOARD MESSAGE WHY DID YOU RE-ELECT ME? I am honored, humbled, grateful, and excited to be elected to serve a second term on the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors, and to continue to serve as the Treasurer. Your trust and confidence in my abilities to serve this community are not taken lightly. I will strive to maintain that trust by making informed decisions on behalf of the community and by fulfilling my duties under the law (Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 116 and Nevada Administrative Code (NAC) 116). Nancy Prince

Being elected to the board of directors of a homeowners association has similarities to being elected for public office in a governmental capacity, yet there are also significant differences. All directors on the board collectively represent and act on behalf of the association. All directors have a fiduciary duty to the association as a whole. According to the Nevada Real Estate Division (NRED), a fiduciary is an individual in whom the unit owners have placed the utmost trust and confidence to manage and protect property and/or money. What is a board member's fiduciary duty? All directors must act in good faith and the honest belief that their actions are in the best interest of the ASSOCIATION, not individual members, and not in their own personal interest. Elected political and governmental representatives are loyal to the constituency that elected them. Your Sun City Aliante Homeowners Association directors are 100% volunteers and have a duty of loyalty to the association as a whole, not individual owners. Elected political and governmental representatives owe favors to their constituency so they can be re-elected. That is a motivation of self-interest. In contrast, your Sun City Aliante Homeowners Association directors must set aside their self-interests and make decisions based upon what is in the best interest of the association, even if it costs them the election. My pledge to you is to follow the statutes and governing documents in making informed decisions that are in the best interest of Sun City Aliante Homeowners Association. And THAT is why you re-elected me. I thank you for your utmost trust and confidence in me. Respectfully, Nancy Prince, Treasurer, Sun City Aliante Board of Directors Princen715@gmail.com

COMMUNITY STANDARDS Hello Residents, Cheeseburgers, hotdogs, BBQ ribs, grilled corn on a cob, and some cold beer. Hello, summer days! The long days of summer heat are officially here. Be careful, stay hydrated, and do not forget your sunscreen. Guests are welcome, and we encourage you to show off our beautiful new Community Center. Guests visiting for the summer, who are under 19 years of age, may stay overnight but no longer than ninety (90) days per calendar year. Guests, who are over age 18, are also welcome to attend classes, events, seminars and use the equipment in the Common Area facility, based upon availability and specific guidelines for the facility. Please be reminded that guests must sign in at the Front Desk and pay a guest fee ($5 daily fee) upon entering. Residents: you are responsible for the conduct of your guests. As a resident, you will be held responsible for any damages to the Association property and Common Areas resulting from guests' intentional misconduct or gross negligence. See Resident Rules for further guidance. Residents must remain with their Guests in the facility at all times. The coupon books were mailed. Sun City Aliante assessment is $200.00 per quarter. Please do not confuse these coupon books with your Aliante Master assessment that is $44.85 per month. If you did not receive a coupon book or have any questions, please stop by the Customer Service Office, or email me. New homeowners and/or new tenants: please register at the Customer Service Office with Carol Garbarino. She can also help you with your Activity Card should you desire to use the community center amenities. All tenants must have a current lease submitted to the office, and the lease must be at least for twelve (12) months. The Association does not allow short-term leases, such as Airbnb. Now that summer is in full swing, the hot weather will surely motivate many of you to enjoy the Community Center pool. Why would you not? We have an awesome pool area! Swimsuits are required for all residents and their guests. If you bring children as guests, they must be over 42” tall to swim in the pool. The pool is open to children under age 18 from noon to 2 p.m. daily ($2 fee per child). Children are not permitted in the spa or sauna. Please make sure they have appropriate swim trunks and/or suits. No shirts or cut-offs are allowed to be worn, while in the pool or spa. According to the Department of Parks and Recreation, street clothes (especially cotton) can transport airborne and ultimately water borne contaminants into the pool. Absorbent materials (such as cotton) can break down in the water and cause fibers to clog filters. Any “colored” material (unless specifically made for swimming) can bleed into the pool, affecting water chemistry and balance. Cotton and similar materials can absorb the chemicals in the water, causing the water to become less effective in maintaining the proper chemical balance. Please be courteous to one another while enjoying our facilities. If you have any questions, please contact me at 702-638-5006 or assistantmanager@suncityaliante.us.

Wishing you all a spectacular 4th of July! Debbie Kent Lifestyle Director

ASSOCIATION NEWS

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

COUNCILMAN RICHARD CHERCHIO

Hello Residents, The good ole summertime is finally upon us keeping you “warm and toasty.” However, we do have some amazing things to look forward to during July and August. Educational Lunch and Learns and Snack 'n' Learns are back with a lot of interesting topics. We have everything from celebrating “Christmas in July,” to the best values in cruising, to physiotherapy to improve your health, to saving dollars on your energy bill. You can register by calling 702-6385000 or stopping by the Front Desk. We all also offering webinars; so, please do not forget to check them out. The Communication Committee is offering one-on-one training in the Grand View Room on July 20 from 10 a.m. to noon for those of you who want to brush up on navigating our website and signing up for the eBlast. They will also begin offering in-depth website training in September. Please check upcoming issues of The Breeze and eBlasts for more information. The eBlast and website, wwwsuncityaliante.org, are valuable tools to help you stay up to date on important information. For example, we notified residents of the availability of the COVID-19 vaccine through the eBlast and postings on the website. We recently had a request from Congressman Horsford's office to schedule a Town Hall and Ice Cream Social on July 1. Due to the short time frame, the only way to effectively promote the event was through the eBlast and website. If you would like to follow up with me to receive more information about signing up for both, please contact me via the information below. Thank you to everyone who shared personal photos of their vacation travels in this issue of the magazine. We really enjoy sharing your good times. It is amazing how many residents have traveled to far corners of the world. Also, we appreciate getting your photos and brief write-ups for the Resident Spotlight section. Please keep them coming. Some residents contacted me or the Front Desk to let me know they did not receive the June issue of The Breeze. We appreciate you notifying us. I have contacted the Post Office and taken steps to resolve the situation. If this happens again, please contact me, and I will make sure you receive a copy of the magazine. I wanted to close with a few fun facts about July 4th, courtesy of Parade.com, May 31, 2021: • ·Americans typically eat 150 million hot dogs on Independence Day, “enough to stretch from D.C. to L.A. more than five times,” according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. • Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is held annually on July 4. In 2018, champion Joey Chestnut ate 74 hot dogs with buns in just 10 minutes. • The first July 4 celebration took place at the White House in 1801, hosted by Thomas Jefferson. • Every July 4, descendants of the signers of the Declaration of Independence tap the Liberty Bell 13 times in honor of the original 13 colonies. If you have any suggestions or comments you would like to make, please contact me at twilliamson@suncityaliante.us or 702-429-1623. Trish Williamson Editor, The Breeze

WWW.SUNCITYALIANTE.ORG | THE BREEZE

Hello everyone, This month, I would like to discuss the expansion of our North Las Vegas Municipal Court and its new diversionary programs, which focus on rehabilitation. The program, dubbed the Community Approach to Rehabilitation and Engagement (CARE) Court, focuses on addressing the factors that underlie a defendant's criminal behavior with the goal to reduce recidivism and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods, while also increasing the public's confidence in the court system. This comprehensive program is the first of its kind here in Southern Nevada! In the past, the accepted procedure in many cases was to essentially lock someone up and throw away the key, so to speak, until the end of their sentence. Unfortunately, we have seen this led to a revolving door effect, with individuals getting stuck in a cycle of arrests, serving time and being released, only to return again and repeat the process. The CARE Court program is an attempt to break the cycle by intervening and including rehabilitation of the individual while they are in custody. By trying to address the root causes of many non-violent crimes, this program can achieve the goal of reducing criminal activity in our city for all our residents, particularly our seniors, who are our most vulnerable, and a main reason why I supported it. Through our problem-solving court, we can use the court's mission to address the contributing factors that cause criminal behavior in the long term. Traditional criminal courts rely on sanctions to ensure compliance, such as fines, jail sentences, late fees, penalties and reporting to credit unions. The CARE Court Program aims to connect defendants with resources to create accountability and prevent recidivism. Some examples include mental health services, substance abuse counseling, rehabilitation, housing services, veteran services, immigration services, food assistance and job readiness training, just to name a few. Let me be clear: this is not a get-out-of-jail free card. Judge Christopher Lee and his staff do a tremendous job identifying participants who may benefit from the program and holding them accountable every step of the way. As you know, we have many veterans living in Sun City and around North Las Vegas, with many more moving in each week. Unfortunately, some fall onto hard times and find themselves in trouble with the law. It is very important to me that we ensure those who find themselves in this situation have every opportunity to participate in this program and are treated with respect. The CARE Court Program veterans' treatment arm will take a therapeutic approach that is specifically formulated to serve the needs of the men and women who have served our country. This will be a standalone program that will ensure that veterans are seen independently from other CARE Court Program participants in order to best serve the unique needs of our community's veterans. The Veterans' Court will be a twelve-month program consisting of four phases to provide the best possible outcome for each participant. When we reopened our jail, after years of outsourcing to Las Vegas due to the inability to operate it ourselves, we changed the name from Detention Center to our Community Correctional Center. It was a major commitment our City Council made to our community to improving the criminal justice system. The new CARE Court program is another key component in achieving that goal and keeping that promise to you, our residents. Everything we have been doing and instituting has been based on progressive thinking and our vision to address the problem at its source and rehabilitate our future, which will improve the quality of life for us all today and tomorrow. Be safe and stay cool! Richard Cherchio, Councilman, Ward 4

NEIGHBORHOOD NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MONTHLY BULLETIN:

[ [ ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE

Meets every other Friday, 8:30 a.m. Harlan Nelson at hnelson867@cox.net

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Neighborhood Watch (NW) Block Captains meet every other month at the Sun City Aliante Community Center. Our most recent meeting was May 20, 2021. Approximately 30 Block Captains and several volunteer members of the Patrol attended the meeting. Phil Zanello, chairman of the Patrol Committee, gave an update on the progress of the startup of the new Patrol group, which, as of 2020, is now a separate entity from Neighborhood Watch. As soon as plans are finalized, we expect to see Patrol volunteers out in the community. The May guest speaker was Portland Preston of the Community Education Division (CED) of the NLVPD. CED is responsible for conducting programs and events to provide information to residents and businesses to help make them safe. Members of CED are frequent guests at NW meetings and provide safety tips and crime statistics in our Northwest Division. Portland shared some recent statistics with the group. Luckily, most incidents didn't occur in Aliante, but residents should be aware of what is going on in our surrounding community: •

Many Sun City residents walk within their neighborhoods. Walking paths are available in North Las Vegas at Craig Ranch Regional Park. Portland advised residents to walk only in daylight hours, as teenagers have been causing disturbances in the park after dark and it's not safe.

•

Five recent robberies at Walmart, Home Depot and 7-Eleven. The weapons used were guns and knives.

•

Two residential burglaries with entry by breaking windows/glass.

•

Six vehicle burglaries with entry by unlocked doors and breaking glass.

•

Six stolen vehicles, five of which were recovered. One of those occurred in our community.

Safety tips •

Be alert and aware of surroundings when out and about.

•

Consider using glass breakage sensors, along with an alarm system or safety film on your windows.

•

Many car burglaries are crimes of opportunity. Remember to lock your doors and remove personal items when you are not in the vehicle. It's easy to forget something when you leave the house and run back in with your vehicle running or with the doors open. It only takes a minute for your vehicle to be stolen. It happens more often than we think.

•

CED provides a FREE Home Inspection service. They will come to your home, conduct a security survey, and discuss their findings with you. What a great way to find out from a professional just how safe they think your home might be, and they offer suggestions on how you can make your home safe.

We would like to pass along a bit of information regarding just how vehicles might be stolen, and how we might help prevent it from happening to us. • •

If at all possible, park your vehicles in the garage. There is a new style tow truck known as a “Repo” truck.

It was designed to repossess cars in a hurry. If a car thief has one, they can steal a car in a minute without leaving the tow truck. With front wheel drive vehicles, it does not have to be taken out of park, and they don't have to get into the vehicle. No car or truck on the street is safe. The only way to prevent it from being stolen on the street is to turn your tires into the curb. The arm on the repo truck cannot get under the vehicle. NEWS AND NOTES Save Money On Your Energy Bill This Summer Want to save money on your energy bill during the hot summer months in Las Vegas? Nevada Department of Clean Energy (NDOCE) can guide you on the energy efficiency programs available exclusively to Nevada homeowners. First, let's understand that the state of Nevada has passed a bill back in 2017 (Assembly Bill 405) that outlines the renewable energy opportunities for homeowners. Speaking of "bills," did you know on your NV Energy bill you are charged a Temp. Green Power Financing and Energy Efficiency charge? Unless you own your utility and are selling energy back to the grid, these charges will remain on your NV Energy bill. This is where NDOCE comes in: to guide you through the process of qualifying your home to own your energy and add equity to your home instantly. Our mission is to educate Nevada homeowners statewide on the renewable energy program and make your home energy efficient with less of a carbon footprint on the environment. We have a dedicated and highly-trained team of energy experts that can assess your home's energy, and some of the products come with free installation; so, there's no cost to you! What are the incentives for homeowners for the Nevada renewable energy program? There is a 26% tax savings of the entire costs of the system that can go into your pocket or towards the overall savings. How do you qualify for the state renewable energy program to own and pay $0 out of pocket? First visit our website www.ndoce.com and click on "Get Qualified." Your usage information from the form will be verified by NV Energy, who is also responsible for your smart thermostat installation. NV Energy will examine the application to see if your home generates enough usage to qualify. Once you qualify, one of our skilled energy assessors will schedule a time with you to assess your home to become more energy efficient and qualify your home for thousands of dollars in savings from these state programs. Homeowners, when they qualify, pay $0 out of pocket, own the system, and will sell energy back to the grid. Ultimately reducing their energy bill to NOTHING. Do not hesitate and get your assessment scheduled TODAY! Stop taking from the earth when the sun gives you the same result. Visit our website for more information and see if your home qualifies at NDOCE.com.

JOYCE BLOCK OFFERS INSPIRATION TO EVERYONE By Trish Williamson

From her earliest years, Sun City Aliante resident Joyce Block remembers writing poems, being very passionate about issues, and wanting to help people. For example, she reflected on the time she was on the subway In New York carrying a little blue box to collect money for planting trees. She was inspired that the people, who looked like they could least afford it, were the ones who would drop a coin in her box. Joyce was born and raised

Joyce Block is making final preparations for in the Bronx, New York. the publication of her book, Poems for Our Times, which was published in January 2021 At age 14, she met the love of her life, Leon Block. "I by Austin Macauley Publishers, LLC.

fell in love, head over heels instantly, and he was a hard-to-get kind of a guy," said Joyce. "However, at the time, he was not interested in me; so, I moved on." She confessed that most of her writings related to love were inspired by him. A well-educated woman, Joyce graduated from Hunter College High School and Hunter College. She went on to attend Fordham University where she earned a Master's Degree and a Ph.D. in Urban Education. She put her skills to work teaching diversity for children in at-risk schools. In her middle years, Joyce met Leon, her first love, again and they were married. They moved to Sun City Summerlin in Las Vegas, and finally to Sun City Aliante in North Las Vegas. Joyce taught English in the Clark County School District, where her son, Johnathan Marcus, is an award-winning teacher.

penning her poems and finally compiled a manuscript. In 2020, she sent it to several publishers and received a letter from Austin Macauley Publishers. "The Editor wrote back and said, 'People will go to this book again and again because they can relate to it.' That's why they wanted to publish my book, 'Poems for Our Times,'" Joyce said. She writes about the loss of death, love, social justice, the immigration problem, the challenges to our democracy, and more. The book is divided into five sections. Her passion for social justice is evident in "Us and Them" section. The loss of her beloved daughter, Beth, inspired the "Loss" section. The Austin Macauley Publisher advertising poster describes "Poem of Our Times" as “An expression of the unique and dangerous times we live in. An account of youthful to mature love and the losses we all endure along the way. Lessons for love of country and all the people in the world, who are desperately needing that voice.”

The book is now available online at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble and in bookstores.

In closing, Joyce said, "I hope people will read it, feel it and watch out for our country." Thank you, Joyce, for the inspirational journey through your writings that move the heart and soul.

"My idea was you can teach different children in different ways. I taught at Bridger Junior High School in an at-risk area. Every morning students came in and danced or did their homework. When the bell rang, there was no kidding around," Joyce continued. "I was the toughest teacher, but I had no discipline problems. It's called tough love! I was a good teacher, and I loved the kids all the same way. "I would challenge my kids," Joyce noted, "I told students I would take them to the MGM Amusement Park if they went from failing to passing. I got passes and took my class to different shows. I wanted to ensure disadvantaged children had the opportunity to see shows on The Strip. Joyce credits her parents, Ray and Abraham Bukaresky, for encouraging her love of writing. For many years, Joyce kept

MEN'S HEALTH IS IMPORTANT YEAR-ROUND By Dr. Brian A. Davis OK guys, time to get screened and live longer Last month was Men's Health Awareness month, but Intermountain believes that men's health is important throughout the year. Yet most men take their cars in for a tune-up more often than they visit the doctor. Men avoid going to see their provider whenever possible - unless they're bleeding or on fire - so they often skip vital screenings that can detect life-threatening conditions such as cardiovascular disease. What's more, men are more often injured in accidents and more likely to order the bacon double cheeseburger than the chopped salad, and to have one more beer for the road - which can lead to multiple risk factors. What kills most men? Getting checked out by your doctor can catch small problems before they become big problems in these areas: • Cardiovascular Disease • Lung Cancer • Prostate Cancer • Depression and Suicide • Diabetes • Alcoholism According to the US Office of Health and Human Services, these risk areas are relatively the same for men across racial and ethnic boundaries. What's your heart up to these days? Heart disease is the number one killer of men over 40. Ask yourself these questions: • Do you get tired and winded after exercise or activity? • Do you often experience pain in your neck or chest? • Does this pain sometimes extend into your shoulders or arms? If the answer to any of these is "yes," you should first and foremost schedule an appointment with your provider as soon as possible to discuss these symptoms with them. You should also do some preventative care, under your provider's guidance, such as: • Get your cholesterol checked • Incorporate physical activity into your daily schedule • Quit smoking • Eat more fruits and veggies The US Office of Health and Human Services recommends making half your plate fruit or veggies at every meal.

Stomp out the butts Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, and can increase your risk of erectile dysfunction (now there's a reason to quit). Plus, having more wind will help you exercise longer, which will contribute to your overall health. Not to mention not smelling like an ashtray. Prostate problems Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among men almost 60% higher among Black/African-American men says the CDC. Fortunately, it's relatively easy to detect. An annual exam and simple blood tests can give you and your doctor a heads-up. Treatments for this are normally quite effective and survival rates are high. Avoid and control diabetes People get their blood pressure checked all the time, but they hardly ever check their blood glucose, which indicates diabetes or prediabetes. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can defeat this silent killer. If you already have diabetes, check your glucose meter daily and stay on your meds. Throttle back on the bottle The CDC reports 30% of men over 18 consume more than five drinks in a day at least one day a year, and men are almost twice as likely to binge drink than women. Here's some fun facts to bring up at happy hour: • According to the CDC, as of 2019, 7% of men had an alcoholrelated disorder as opposed to 4% of women. • Nearly 75% of deaths from excessive drinking are among men, accounting for 68,000 deaths a year in the US. • Men are 50% more likely to be intoxicated drivers in fatal vehicle accidents. • Excessive drinking can lead to erectile dysfunction and infertility. Keep your head in the game Quarantine took a heavy toll on everyone's psyche, and as a result, many of us are suffering from various forms of depression. This isn't the '50s - there's no shame in meeting with a mental health professional if you are experiencing depression, anxiety, or stress related symptoms. Fortunately, help is just a phone call away. You can reach out to your primary care provider to get access to the resources you need. Getting your annual wellness exam can help you catch issues before they become full blown illnesses. At Intermountain Healthcare's myGeneration Clinics, preventative wellness is a focus of ours. We also incorporate a mind-body approach, which allows our patients to seek help for both mental and physical issues via their trusted Primary Care Provider.

PICKLEBALL CLUB Each year the number of pickleball players in Southern Nevada increases, just as it has done similarly across the United States and globally. According to the USA Pickleball organization, membership has surpassed 40,000. Substantial national growth appears to have a direct correlation to individuals and families discovering the sport while living within the limitations of COVID-19. Pickleball is an easy game to learn and play well whether you are “super-competitive” or just playing with the grandchildren. According to USA Pickleball member and Sun City Aliante resident, Sarah Smith, “Growth in Las Vegas is very noticeable. When Governor Sisolak specifically announced that our public parks were Sarah Smith & Lynn Hyche open for pickleball play, I soon discovered many new faces, including lots of multi-generational families. It seemed that more and more people were discovering how to laugh and have fun outdoors again by playing pickleball. Prior to the pandemic, there were very few pickleball players whom I didn't know, whether playing at Police Memorial Park, Durango Hills YMCA, or in Henderson at Whitney Mesa and Black Mountain.” In addition to being a competition player, Sarah is a Level 2 pickleball referee and helps at introduction sessions for families and youth players. Clark County officials also see the growth of pickleball as a way to bolster tourism. The inaugural sanctioned Mountain Region Pickleball Tournament, previously held in Utah, was held locally in May, with more than 1180 participants, at the newly constructed 24-court facility at Sunset Regional Park. Although a fair number of participants were locals, the greater portion of players came from other states. City and county officials are also making plans for another tournament type facility to be built in the Northwest Valley near Summerlin. If you want to learn more go to www.usapickleball.org or if you interested in learning how to play the fastest growing sport in the world contact: Ken Schmitz at 925-708-5728.

SUN CITY ALIANTE SONGSTERS Great news! The sound of music will be heard once again this fall, as the Songsters start rehearsing for their Holiday Concert planned for early December. All current and former members have been notified; and there has been overwhelming positive response. Six new members have joined the choir. Concert music packets were distributed in May and June; so, choir members could start to look over the music. Reading music is not required to be a Songster. Holly Strasser, the director, will guide all members in the process of learning the concert music. As of June, the Songsters have 44 members, but they always have room for more singers. If you are interested call Holly Strasser at 702-305-1768 or email at hollystrasser23@gmail.com.

UKULELE GROUP Greetings Aliante Ukulele Strummers! I am happy to announce that due to the lift of all pandemic restrictions we have permission to re-start Sun City Aliante's Ukulele Strummers live and in person! Here are the details: Start date: Classes now meet every Sunday starting June 20. Location: Craft Room 2 Two classes are offered: Ÿ Intro to Ukulele 101: 2-3 p.m. This is the class for people who have never played ukulele or who want to go back to the basic chords. Ÿ Intermediate Ukulele: 3-4 p.m. This is for students who have attended my classes last year before the pandemic shutdown. We will start slow and play some of the songs we played before we had to shut down. For new songs, the intermediate class will use the FREE song book of 350 songs by our new friend, Petey Mack, whose daily Facebook live Ukulele classes and book saved our sanity during the pandemic. (If you want to thank Petey for the use of his book you can message him on Facebook – he would love to know that you are using it.) There are many songs in the book which use the basic chords we know, along with some new fairly easy new chords which we will learn. I will use a projector to show the song book in class, but you will want to download it to your computer for home use. Here is the download link to Petey's book: https://peteymack2.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/5/4/135404457/dec_2020.pdf Please forward this invite your friends who are interested in one of the above classes. If you have any questions, please give me a call. Judy and I are so happy to be able to play live with you! Aloha and welcome back to normal! Kevin Smith 916-847-7422
