MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT ED SLOMAN CREATING A MISSON AND VISION STATEMENT Hello Neighbors: First and foremost, I hope all had a terrific holiday and New Year.

December 3 & 4 marked a historic time for our Sun City Aliante Board as we embarked upon creating a Mission/Vision statement. Six board members (Kathy Martin was cruising) began the first 3-hour day by being asked by Facilitator Gaby Rueda to give your name, where you are from, what is the most disgusting food you've ever eaten; and then, if you won a million dollars what would you do with it. It sure calmed everyone and set the tone for some very down to earth discussions.

What we learned from each other was we all have similar values.

• Financial responsibility Managing associations finances prudently.

• Integrity Conducting all association activities with honesty, fairness, and ethical behavior.

• Community engagement Encouraging active participation and involvement of homeowners in the associations activities and decision making process.

• Accountability Ensure that board members, management, and homeowners are accountable for their actions and decisions, and that they adhere to the associations governing documents.

• Quality of Life Enhance the quality of Life for homeowners by maintaining common areas, providing amenities, and fostering a sense of community.

Day one ended by listing out some vision statement and mission statement exercises which would roll us into day 2.

Day two began hashing out what we felt would be a good vision statement using the data from our values exercise. That was followed up by using our core principles to create a Mission Statement. At the end of the session, we were very pleased with what we had produced for our community. Interesting, was that the FSR staff, which included our FSR Vice President Lauren Starner, was constantly fact checking via ChatGPT (AI tool) to see what it would recommend.

We rolled out the Mission/Vision at our December 11 Board meeting. During the meeting one of our residents, Qung Go, also went on ChatGPT and got the following feedback which he shared with me.

CAI Nominates Sun City Aliante for 2024 Awards We are proud to announce that Sun City Aliante has once again been nominated by Community Associations Institute (CAI) for the 2024 Southern Nevada Outstanding Large Association of the Year. This is the seventh consecutive year our community has been considered for this prestigious award (the equivalent of the “CAI Oscar”).

Sun City Aliante was nominated and won the award for 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. In 2020, we were nominated for this award.

It is my fondest wish that the New Year brings everyone health, peace, happiness and blessings. I have been the Board Chair of the Covenants Committee (CC) for many years, and I am presently Board Liaison of the committee. Because so many families have recently made Sun City Aliante (SCAL) their home, I thought it would be a good idea to explain the function of the CC, why and how a homeowner is called before the committee, and what takes place during a committee Mark Smith hearing when it appears that our governing documents (GD) which consist of the CC&R's, By Laws, Rules and Regulations, and Design Guidelines may not have been adhered to.

SCAL is a homeowner's association. When we purchased our homes, we became contractually obligated and required to be governed and bound by our GD. Sadly, some of our homeowners do not always abide by their contractual obligations. The CC is made up of seven (7) homeowners. Its job is to ensure our residents are in compliance with our GD. Possible violations generally come to management's attention in one of two ways: they are noticed during the monthly “drive through” of the community by First Service Residentials' Community Ambassador, who does the community inspections, or by someone calling management's attention to a potential problem.

Nelenie Hernandez, our Community Association Assistant Manager and Director of Standards and Compliance, is charged with the responsibility of following up on all reports made to management. Once she receives notification of a potential problem, a courtesy letter is sent to the homeowner(s), which informs of a potential violation and provides an opportunity to correct any possible problem. If a reply is not received or if no satisfactory solution is reached, a second courtesy letter is sent. If the homeowner does not reply to the second courtesy letter, the homeowner is sent “a notice of hearing letter,” which advises that a hearing is scheduled before the CC and their appearance at a hearing is required to determine if there is a violation. The homeowner is also advised that they may call witnesses and provide information on their behalf.

At the hearing, management (or in the case of a homeowner's complaint) or the complaining party, present whatever information there is to establish a violation. Committee members have an opportunity to question management or any other person who might provide information on behalf of management at the hearing. After Committee members have finished asking questions, the homeowner(s) has an opportunity to question those people. After management's “witnesses” are finished making a statement and are questioned, the homeowner(s) has an opportunity to have any person who has information relevant to the complaint make a statement (this person is also questioned by CC members).

Finally, the homeowner(s) has an opportunity to make a statement on their behalf. Again, Committee members have an opportunity to question the homeowner(s) once the statement is finished. The homeowner(s) can present any physical evidence (e.g., photos). After all the information has been presented, the homeowner(s) has an opportunity to make a final statement. Once the hearing is completed, the homeowner(s) is excused and the CC deliberates to determine whether or not the homeowner(s) did commit a violation. If the CC finds that no violation has occurred, the hearing is concluded and nothing further is done. The homeowner(s) is notified that the matter is closed.

YEAR IN REVIEW 2024 Dear Residents:

I hope you enjoyed a very healthy and happy holiday season. First, as we begin the new year, we have some important things happening soon that I would like to share.

Then I would like to review some of our past year's accomplishments.

2025 Election and Annual Meeting Now is your chance to get involved with our community. I hope you will consider running as a candidate in the 2024 Election for the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors.

We have three seats open for the upcoming election, and the elected officers will serve two-year terms. The election process is beginning this month.

A Candidate Interest Form and Disclosure Statement are included as an insert in this issue of The Breeze. If you are interested in running for the Board, please complete this form and turn it in at the Front Desk no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, February 3, 2025. As a Board member, you would play an important leadership role in our dynamic community. I hope you will join us at the Annual Meeting of Sun City Aliante on Wednesday, May 14. The meeting will open at 8 a.m. and then recess to count the ballots for the 2025 Board Election. The annual meeting will be reconvened at 12:15 p.m. when the election results will be announced at the Board of Directors meeting.

During 2024, we completed many projects and hosted numerous events, activities, and educational presentations, which I would like to share with you.

1.

Board's Mission and Vision Statement – FirstService Residential Corporate, Sun City Aliante Management, and the Board met to define the Board's Mission and Vision, and to develop a Project Action List of priorities for the upcoming years.

2.

Vista Room Sound System – Completed installation of the new sound system in the Vista Room, including the replacement of the overhead speaker system, amplifier, control system, projector, and screen.

3.

Thermostat System – A new thermostat system, provided by NV Energy at NO cost to the Association, was installed in the Community Center.

4.

Roof – Repaired the roof above the gym and pool area. Also, completed repairs to the six skylights in the pool area.

5.

Pool Area – Completed the annual maintenance of the pool area.

6.

Pool Patio Fence – Replaced and repainted the pool area patio fence.

7.

Parking Lot – Restriped the parking lot spaces, repainted the curbs in the parking lot, and added six-wheel stops to disabled people parking spaces next to the Vista Room.

8.

Repainting Curbs – All red curbs in front of the fire hydrants throughout the community were painted.

9.

Automated Exit Door – The exit door near the Vista Room was automated.

10.

Sidewalk Repairs – Sidewalks were repaired in multiple common area locations.

11.

Office Equipment – Replaced six staff computers.

12.

Pedestrian Traffic Light Bar and Signage – Worked with the City to get the pedestrian traffic light bar and signage installed at Widewing and Elkhorn.

13.

Speed Deterrence – Speed Detectors were installed on Broadwing and Widewing streets to secure data to track when speeding was most prevalent.

14.

New Email Addresses for Board and Committee Volunteers - The Board and Committees received new Sun City Aliante email addresses to use for association business to ensure privacy.

15.

Age Verification Survey – Finalized collecting information for the survey. Every two years, our residents are required to complete a survey to ensure the protection of our age-restricted and tax status under state and federal law.

Thank you to Assistant Manager Nelenie Hernandez and Customer Service Coordinator Carol Garbarino for executing this challenging task.

16.

Investment Funds – Reinvested CDs with FirstService Financial which realized an increase of thousands of dollars more in annual interest income.

17.

Special Events – Lifestyle Director Debbie Kent has outdone herself again with another amazing year of activities and events on and off-site, which were flawlessly executed by the remarkable Front Desk Team. A few highlights include the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, Christmas Tree Lighting, Festival of Lights, Coffee with The Board, CAI Award Celebration, Spring Fling, and trips to see the Vegas Golden Knights, Aces, UNLV Runnin' Rebels and Aviators sporting events, and numerous concerts and shows.

18.

New Resident Welcome & Club Expo - Residents had an opportunity to meet the Board and see the community amenities. Our 40+ amazing Clubs and Special Interest Groups were on hand to introduce them to various activities.

19.

Arts & Crafts Show –This popular event, designed to showcase handmade artistic items, is a fantastic shopping experience. Thanks to Elaine Goddard and Kotch Bergman who oversaw all the details of these shows and to Facilities Manager, Juan Macias and the Maintenance Team for their hard work setting up and breaking down the two-day event.

20.

Advertiser's Meet & Greet - Thanks to Breeze Editor Trish Williamson and the Communications Committee for hosting two events which gave residents a chance to meet Breeze advertisers face-to-face and win lots of prizes.

21.

Health Expo – Offered a unique opportunity to speak to experts who specialize in medical and dental, and related health products and services.

22.

Seminars – Organized approximately 200 Lunch 'n' Learn and Snack 'n' Learn seminars advertised in The Breeze. Special Thanks to Trish Williamson and Front Desk Team.

23.

Immunization Clinics – Smith's pharmacists were on hand at the Community Center to offer a wide range of vaccinations. Thanks to our local Smith's pharmacy and Trish Williamson.

24.

Voting – Early and Election Day Voting was offered at the Community Center and hosted by the Clark County Election Department.

25.

Candidate Meet & Greet – This event, organized by NLV Alliance of Homeowners and hosted by Sun City Aliante, gave our residents a chance to meet candidates running for local and federal offices.

26.

Free Memory Screenings & Expo – The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Brain Center and the Alzheimer's Association sponsored FREE memory screening and local nonprofit organizations that offers a wide variety of services.

Thank you to all the individuals who made all these successes possible – our great Board of Directors, our Committee Members, and our many, many volunteers. I especially want to thank our extraordinary team members who worked to enhance the lives of all our residents the entire year.

• Focus on Property Values – Enhancing property values ties directly to core responsibility of an HOA. • Fiduciary Responsibility – Acknowledging a fiduciary role demonstrates accountability and professionalism.

• Core Values – Inclusion of “respect, transparency, and engagement” shows commitment to collaboration and ethical management.

At the end of the second day, we felt a real sense of accomplishment for our very first Mission/Vision statement. As one board member commented, “I came in here on day one grumpy; but now that we are completed, I feel very satisfied in my participation.”

SUN CITY ALIANTE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION 2025 As a resident of Sun City Aliante, your voice and participation are important in making many decisions that affect you and your community. Now is your chance to get involved. Three seats will be open for the upcoming 2025 Board of Directors election, and the elected officers will serve two-year terms. This election process is beginning this month.

Continued from page 5 If the CC finds there was a violation of our GD, then the CC determines what type of penalty should be imposed. Generally speaking, the CC is empowered to impose a monetary penalty, as well as suspend a homeowner's privileges for a specified amount of time. There is a published schedule of permissible fines, which is available for review by all homeowners. Once a “penalty” decision is made, the hearing is completed and the homeowner(s) is notified by letter of the CC's decision.

Neither management, nor the CC members, enjoy calling an Association member to a hearing and sitting in judgment on them. However, when several attempts at an amicable settlement cannot be reached, the Association has no alternative other than to schedule a hearing and impose a penalty, when appropriate, to ensure compliance of our GD. This is OUR community. No homeowner (s) should feel they are not bound by our governing documents. We all want to live in peace, harmony and without conflict. It is the CC's job to see that we do.

Thankfully, the vast majority of our homeowners do follow the rules and respect each other and our Association. That is why we are able to maintain such a high standard of quality of life and are considered to be the premier active adult association in town. That is one of the reasons you have chosen to live here.

I look forward to seeing everyone “out and about” in the coming months.

What Is in Store for 2025 We are excited to roll out a new year filled with limitless opportunities to enjoy life in Southern Nevada…The year will blast off with the popular Music Bingo (1/3/25), followed by a sensational concert with two award-winning bands: The Four Tops and The Temptations (1/11/25), and an excursion to visit one of the newer properties in Las Vegas – Durango Station (1/23/25).

Let's start with the following few reminders for all residents to avoid notices from the Compliance Office.

Register as a homeowner/resident/tenant. If you are registered, please consider providing your Emergency Contacts.

Ensure that your garage doors are kept closed when not in use.

Trim your shrubs and trees so they don't encroach onto sidewalks or driveways.

Don't allow your back patios to become a jungle; trim trees to avoid an issue with your adjacent neighbors.

Keep your dogs on a leash, pick up waste, and don't allow them to bark excessively.

Don't direct patio lights towards your neighbors' bedrooms and keep television/stereo volumes at appropriate levels.

Be nice to your neighbors, Board members, vendors, staff, and management. Conducts such as loud, profane, inappropriate or abusive language will be deemed as a health and safety welfare violation.

Lastly, I want to share something I recently read. Unfortunately, an author's name wasn't provided. I truly believe one's attitude and behavior can change based on perception. It all depends on how you look at things/circumstances/people. Step back, keep calm, and carry on.

A man pulled into a gas station on the outskirts of town. As he filled his tank, he remarked to the attendant, “I've just accepted a job here in town. I've never been to this part of the country. What are people like here?”

“What are people like where you came from?” the attendant asked. “Not so nice,” the man replied, “In fact, they can be quite rude.”The attendant shook his head. “Well, I'm afraid you'll find the people in this town to be the same way.”

Just then another car pulled into the station. “Excuse me,” the driver called out.

“I'm just moving to this area. Is it nice here?” “Was it nice where you came from?” the attendant inquired. “Why yes! I came from a great place. The people were friendly, and I hated to leave.” “Well, you'll find the same to be true of this town.” “Thanks!” yelled the driver as he pulled away.

“So, what is this town really like?” asked the first man. The attendant just shrugged his shoulders. “It's all a matter of perception. You'll find things to be just the way you think they are.”

I hope you are excited to live another year to the fullest and never stopping to make changes in your life to be more at peace, happier, and more courteous.

If you have never been to a Silver Knights Hockey Game, give it a go! Ticket prices are very reasonable, and you might just find yourself on a Zamboni as the lucky winner chosen to ride this amazing vehicle. (Very few people have had the privilege.) We book excellent seats, and the experience is worth the price of the ticket.

This month in celebration of Martin Luther King's Birthday, the Sun City Aliante Administrative Offices will be closed on Monday, January 20 and reopen on January 21 at 8 a.m. The Community Center will be open regular hours on January 20, 6 a.m. – 9 p.m.

“Auld Lang Syne” is the title of a Scottish folk song, which roughly translates to “days gone by” that many of us sing to celebrate the New Year. The poet Robert Burns is credited with transcribing, adapting and partially rewriting it in the late 18th century. Its lyrics, which rhetorically ask whether “auld acquaintance” should “be forgot,” have been interpreted as a call to remember friends and experiences from the past. Though sung on New Year's Eve since the mid-19th century, it became firmly cemented as a holiday standard when Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians played it during a radio broadcast from New York's Roosevelt Hotel at midnight on December 31, 1929.

New Year's Eve Resolutions – People have made pledges to change their habits for an estimated 4,000 years, beginning with the ancient Babylonians, who made promises to earn the favor of the gods and start the year out right.

The Forbes Health/OnePoll survey found some resolutions to be more common than others, with the most popular goals including Improved fitness, Improved finances, Improved mental health, Lose weight, Improved diet.

Other top resolutions include spending more time with family and friends, less time on social media, reducing stress, learning a new hobby, getting organized, traveling and reading more. Each year, it is estimated that 80 percent of New Year's resolutions are abandoned by February, but if you are really committed, do not give up. If you fall off track, get back on quick.

Why January 1 is the beginning of the New Year? Over the centuries, the calendar fell out of sync with the sun, and in 46 B.C. Julius Caesar decided to solve the problem by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of his time. He introduced the Julian calendar, which closely resembles the more modern Gregorian calendar that most countries around the world use today. As part of his reform, Caesar established January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honor the month's namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future. In medieval Europe, Christian leaders replaced January 1 as the first of the year with days carrying more religious significance, such as December 25 (the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth). Pope Gregory XIII reestablished January 1 as New Year's Day in 1582.

During January, we offer many interesting seminars in the Community Center: Attend a DOC TALK with Intermountain Healthcare on January 12, which focuses on tips for a Healthy Lifestyle. Join DOT & DANGLE on January 19 for an amazing presentation “Daring to Do Dementia Different…ly!” Paul Thorton will offer valuable information about how Nevada's 211 Call Center provides critical information regarding agencies that offer resources for seniors on January 27 and much more.

I hope everyone had a joyful and safe holiday season, and I would like to wish you all a very safe and healthy New Year!

We have been quite busy in North Las Vegas with new construction in virtually every part of our city. I would also like to share that we have some important results of our recent local elections. Ward 2 Councilwoman, Ms. Ruth Garcia Anderson, was successful in retaining her appointed position. Judge Chris Lee was also reappointed to our Municipal Court without an opponent. I also did not have anyone running against me for my seat, and was sworn in December 4 for the next 4 years. I am honored to once again have the privilege of serving all of you.

The next four years will bring challenges with additional growth. There is a tremendous need for affordable housing for both first-time home buyers and our seniors who may want to downsize. I continue to work with developers who want to build on commercial property to provide additional shopping locally; so, we don't have to travel to other parts of the Valley for the goods and services we need.

The most favorable locations available would be in the areas along the Interstate 215 eastward and at Pecos Rd., across from the VA hospital, where the Job Creation Zone is planned for multiple businesses. This would include medical research and services, restaurants, a private hospital, a hotel, and much more.

Grocery stores and other amenities are slated for Revere Street both north and south of the I-215. As you may know, we recently opened our new North Central Area Command on Deer Springs Way between Gliding Eagle Rd. and Revere St..

We will have a large number of our officers assigned to this state-of-the-art facility that will provide us with community meeting rooms when needed.

Our Volunteers In Police Service "VIPS" are located there now and are growing in numbers. If anyone would like to participate in patrolling and/or clerical work, please contact me for further details. We now have more than 30 members.

We recently opened our newest Fire Station 58, also on Deer Springs, further east

by Home Depot. Both police and fire services were purposely located to be close to our residents and part of our community. I have requested that we erect digital signage in front to display local events and information to keep residents up-todate on what's happening in their neighborhoods.

I also want to remind you to avoid eating anything from food vendor trucks who park on corners and in parking lots. Many of them are not licensed, and not approved or inspected by the Health Department. Our police are constantly chasing them, and/or fining them. Food vendors must have a health approved certificate posted where it can be easily seen, which I have never yet observed.

People have reported getting sick. Hopefully, our Legislators, who approved the vender concept two years ago, will make the necessary changes in the law when they meet again to protect the health and safety of our residents.

Lastly on a more positive note, I want to thank all who were involved in our recent “Shop with a Cop” Annual event at Target.

Thank you to Santa for flying in from the North Pole again, and to our Police, Police Volunteers, and everyone else who made this very early morning event – for our children who have serious medical issues – an amazing success.

The maintenance that was performed in October 2024 includes, but is not limited to the following: •

Selective Pruning -The major goal of this pruning method is to improve the health and vigor of the plant material; it also encourages plants to attain mature height and reach their natural full spread.

Olive Trees – Regularly cleaned up the messy fruit drop from Olive trees.

Flowering Plants - The flowering deciduous plants around the Community Center have been kept at a reasonable size for safety and to provide abundant color when in flower.

The Turf Area at Widewing Park – The area was mowed twice this month at a height of 2.5 “; the area was also weeded and fertilized to stimulate a blanket of dense green; however, pet urine may affect the growth of turf is some areas.

Reducing Weeds – Applied preemergent in various areas of the community, which helps to decrease the growth of weeds.

Rock Maintenance – Raked mineral build up on the DG and decorative rock in Sun City Aliante. Calcium buildup, also known as limescale, can occur on rocks and other surfaces when hard water evaporates. This can happen in areas with naturally hard water.

Pruning Trees - Dormant pruning on trees continued throughout December 2024.

Walking Paths - All walking paths were blown weekly.

Plant Removal - On Water Rail, two Desert Spoons that were dying have been removed, and one diseased Ash tree was pruned. It will have to be removed and replaced.

Biweekly inspection – The inspection was performed by an onsite supervisor.

All work was performed in accordance with accepted horticultural practices.

In the past year, we have lost several residents who lived alone and passed away in their homes. Some were not missed for days or weeks. Their emergency contact information at the Community Center was out of date.

How very sad. but Neighborhood Watch has a suggestion. Here is a FREE cell phone app called SNUG that checks in on you daily to make sure you're okay. Snug is currently available for iPhone and Android cell phones. You can download this app by going to your app store and searching for Snug Safety. You may not live alone but you probably know someone who does and can use this helpful free service.

An alternative is to set up a system where you and a friend call or text each other daily. Also, get to know your neighbors. You never know when you might need help. Many of us have lived in Sun City for years and emergency contacts may have changed as well as your own phone number. Did you give up your landline and now only have a cell number? To make sure your emergency contact information is up to date, contact Carol Garbarino, Sun City Aliante Customer Service Coordinator at 702-638-5023.

PATROL COMMITTEE Neighborhood Patrol Needs You! Volunteering with the Neighborhood Patrol is an impactful way to contribute to the safety and well-being of the local community. Here are several key reasons why it is important: 1. Enhancing Community Safety • Crime Prevention: Volunteers in the Neighborhood Patrol help deter criminal activity by maintaining a visible presence. Their efforts can prevent crimes like theft, vandalism, and drug-related offenses, as their presence often discourages potential wrongdoers.

• Quick Response: Volunteers can act as a first line of defense, reporting suspicious activities or emergencies to authorities, potentially preventing or minimizing harm.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT A TRIBUTE TO A FALLEN UNITED STATES MARINE Cpl. Gerald E. King – A Story of a Missing Marine for 37 Years

Who was Cpl. Gerald King and how did we learn of his life and journey in The U.S. Marines? It started with a phone call from a resident to me this fall. I was asked if I could find the family of Gerald King as they wanted to return his “bracelet” and two military bars to his family. It was a tall order but I was motivated by my brother's experience as a Marine in Viet Nam during the same time. I started the search by looking in Ancestry.com. His story unfolded as I dug deeper into the information and found a beautiful letter written about Gerald by his brother, Dennis. Luckily, at the end of his narrative he added his email. I contacted Dennis by email with an offer to send him these items. He said he would be “honored to receive them.” After the items arrived, he wrote back and told me he had received at least 60-70 bracelets from people over the past 19 years. He was “always amazed by the kindness of people he never met to do this for his family.”

Gerald's brother, Dennis King, entered the Marines from 1969-71, a year after his brother died. He sent me background information on the bracelets which I want to share with our readers. People bought the bracelets to honor missing soldiers. The profit from the bracelets were used to finance families of soldiers missing. They wore the bracelet in honor of a fallen, missing in action or prisoner of war. The bracelet was to be returned to the family as a way to welcome them home. Gerald was missing from May 10, 1968 to September 8, 1999 when remains of 12 Marines were recovered during excavation. Following the recovery of these remains, it took 6 years for Gerald to be identified. Dennis King sent his DNA sample to identify his brother. He was 1 of 5 that was identified by DNA; the other marines were identified by personal items. On September 13, 2005, Gerald came home for his burial. He had been missing in action for 37 years. Dennis said his brother coming home was bittersweet because his parents had died and never knew how their beloved son died. He described his older brother as an amazing man who he worshiped, still misses and will never forget.

There were several heartwarming tributes by friends and fellow marines on the memorial site. After reading them, I can safely conclude that Gerald led a good life in his 19 years and left a powerful impact on those who knew him. His family has good reason to be proud of their eldest brother.

CHINESE NEW YEAR - LUNAR NEW YEAR 2025: THE YEAR OF THE SNAKE Chinese Zodiac Culture & Folklore Chinese zodiac is a belief, based on the zodiac animals' temperament, and combining the traditional Chinese religions, philosophy, astrology, and numerology. In ancient times, the zodiac was said not only to decide people's destinies, but also to control a year's harvest and even influence the fortune of the whole nation. Now, the zodiac signs still accompany Chinese people throughout their lives, affecting their personalities, ideas, behaviors, fortune, and marriage compatibilities.

The Lunar New Year in 2025 welcomes the Year of the Snake, according to the Chinese Lunar calendar. The New Year festivities begin on January 29, kicking off the 16-day Spring Festival.

The zodiac culture is also embodied in Chinese literature and art. You might have been impressed by the Journey to the West, a classical Chinese novel with the leading role of Monkey King; or you might have heard the story of the 12 bronze animal heads of the Old Summer Palace in Beijing. There are a lot of legends, poems, fictions, paintings, sculptures, and traditional Chinese paper-cuttings themed on zodiac animals.

Nowadays, the zodiac is considered the mascot of the Chinese New Year, adding entertainments to people's daily life.

The Snake is the sixth animal in the Chinese Zodiac coming after the Dragon, and it has a very different personality and vibe. While the Dragon is flashy and energetic, the Snake is mysterious and subtle and bring a new influence that is more refined and elegant. The Year of the Snake begins on January 29, 2025 and ends on February 16, 2026.

The traditional Chinese lunisolar year has 12 months and 353 to 355 days (or during a leap year, 13 months, and 383 to 385 days).

Therefore, the Chinese year usually begins several weeks into the Western 365-day year (usually between January 21 and February 20), not on January 1 of the Gregorian calendar.

People born in the year of the Snake are said to be wise, charming, and mysterious. They have a keen intuition and a deep understanding of themselves and others. Snakes are also ambitious and determined, but they can be secretive and jealous at times. Snakes enjoy learning new things and exploring different cultures and philosophies.

Lunar New Year is one of the most important celebrations of the year among East and Southeast Asian cultures, including Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean communities, among others. The New Year is usually celebrated for multiple days-not just one day as in the Gregorian calendar's New Year. China's Lunar New Year is known as the Spring Festival or Chujié in Mandarin, while Koreans call it Seollal and Vietnamese refer to it as Tet.

Predictions for the Year of the Snake According to the Chinese horoscope 2025, the Year of the Wood Snake will be a time of tremendous opportunity, renewal and potential. Using the Snake's wisdom and intuition, coupled with the inspirational and flexible n a t u r e o f t h e Wo o d element, we can anticipate a year full of both challenges and opportunities.

How Is the Lunar New Year Celebrated?

As with many winter solstice celebrations, the symbolic darkness of night is banished by the light of fireworks, lanterns, and candles. Manmade paper lanterns are hung by the hundreds in public areas, bringing good luck to the new year.

There are dragon dances, performances, and festival parades with music and acrobatics. The festivities continue for two weeks, finishing with a special lantern festival, which signals the end of the New Year celebration period.

Chinese zodiac 2025 indicates that the year of the Wood Snake will be a time of renewal and transformation. Like a snake sheds its skin and emerges with a new appearance, we too are advised to let go of our old habits and fixed ideas. Surely the year of the Snake 2025 can be an excellent time to start new projects, explore new opportunities or even make significant changes in your life. Another key Chinese zodiac prediction for 2025 is that the Year of the Wood Snake will be a time to think strategically and plan carefully.

The December meeting of the Aliante's Classy Chefs was a celebration of the season. The table and decorations by Cathy Pierce and other decorating assistants were particularly joyful. Hjordy Wagner arranged to bring in all the supplies for treat making. There were several stations set up to make different holiday treats, such as peanut clusters, peppermint chocolate dipped Ritz cookies and Chex mix. Christmas cookies were baked and decorated. The newest member, Garry Boltjes, brought a wonderful Kahlua Pork roast for sliders; Rose Kendrick brought Cole Slaw; Ora Price made Chicken Salad for baked sandwiches; and Lou Kubeldis made potato salad. It was a great menu.

The next meeting of the Classy Chefs will be Tuesday, January 7 at 9:30 a.m. and will feature a Chinese New Year theme. Classy Chefs usually meet the first Tuesday of every month at 9:30 am in the Vista Room and kitchen. There is an annual $10 dues paid in September or when a member joins, plus a $5 per meeting charge for other months' meetings to help reimburse grocery purchases for those who cook, plates and decorations.

CLUB D.I.A.L Do you want to learn how to Line Dance or learn new dances? Looking for a fun way to exercise? Come join members at Club Dial. They teach Line Dancing for Beginners (basic) on Saturday morning from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in the Vista Room. Monday evening there is an Intermediate class from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Exercise Room, and they offer an Intermediate class on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Vista Room. The Wednesday Beginning Class at 6 p.m. is cancelled until further notice.

Come and join us for some dancing, exercise and fun. Club Dial also hosts a Dance Social on the third Saturday of every month from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Vista Room. Glass Fusing Afternoon Saturday, January 11, 2025 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

The Glass Fusing Club is offering an afternoon of creative fun for the community. It will include each participant creating a fused glass item.

You will have the option to create include a ring dish, a pocket vase, a night light, a tea light holder or a plant stake. All materials and lots of help will be provided by the Glass Fusion Club to create your own piece of fused glass, no experience is needed. The afternoon will also include some tasty goodies to enjoy while working on your piece. The cost is $20. Seating is limited. Please contact Jodi Schaller at 520-252-2078 to make your reservation.

They have raw clay for hand building, greenware, and bisque. Our members give a $5 a month contribution, which covers all the paints and glazes used. Firing of a piece is measured for the cost. PICKLEBALL CLUB In November, Sun City Aliante residents and Pickleball Club members, Sarah Smith and Lynn Hyche, participated in the 2024 BIOFREEZE USA Pickleball National Championships.

Sarah, a USA Pickleball Certified Referee, officiated matches played by amateurs and professionals.“I love playing pickleball, and I also enjoy being in the position to assure rules are unbiasedly applied and enforced.”

Lynn played women's doubles and mixed doubles at the tournament held in Mesa, AZ. She was one of more than 2,600 players who participated in the 9day event. Lynn and her male partner did not receive awards for their efforts but did enjoy competing with “The best of the best” in pickleball.

Playing in the 70-74 age group at the 4.5 skill level with her partner, Cathleen Kaufman, they battled throughout the day against numerous teams and ended up one game short of reaching the top step on the medal stand. Considering it a great challenge to play at one of the highest skill levels for amateurs, Lynn says she is proud of her accomplishments and earning a silver medal at Nationals “…makes me happy!”

Happy New Year from the members of Seniors with Warm Hearts with wishes to all residents for a healthy and happy 2025. Our sincere thanks and gratitude for the outpouring of generosity from our community for the donations we received for our 2024 Season of Giving. We raised $380 for the Project 150 Thanksgiving Meal Program. In addition, we thank Karen Edwards and the Glad Hatters of Lamb of God Lutheran Church for their donations of 300 knitted hats which were distributed to three of our charities. The rest of the results will be published in our next article, It is also time to reflect on the past and look to the future. Carol Hoyt and Karen Nutto have been the co-chairs for over 10 years. Looking back at all our group has done makes us hopeful for another successful year in 2025. Through the 100s of members, past and present, we were able to raise tens of thousands of dollars through the many activities we do every year including our annual food drive, school supplies and necessities drive, animal rescue drive, and book drive, along with our fundraising events at our community arts & crafts shows. Whether it was monetary donations, gift cards, gifts, food, toiletries, school supplies, clothing, or home goods, your donations have been GREATLY APPRECIATED. We have helped many charities over the years including SAFE House, Street Teens, Project 150, Serving Our Kids, Helping Hands of Vegas Valley, Goodie Two Shoes, Baby's Bounty, Spread the Word Nevada, Ronald McDonald House, Nevada SPCA, A Home for Spot/Dog Junkies, A Path 4 Paws, Project Marilyn, The LGBTQ+ Center, RAD (Raising A Real Autism Difference), Del Sol Academy, Detweiller Elementary School and the PKD Foundation, to name a few.

Our members have accumulated thousands volunteer hours working in the community as well as on location at Project 150 both and at their annual Prom Closet, Serving Our Kids, Silver Sky at Deer Springs, PKD, Project Marilyn, SAFE House, Street Teens, RAD and Nevada Reading Awareness Week at Somerset Academy. We have been blessed to coordinate efforts with clubs and groups such as Forget Me Knots, LGBT Group, Sun City Aliante Songsters, Silver Needles and Threads and Paper Crafting and outside organizations including Glad Hatters and the Assistance League.

In January, the Technology Club is taking the month off. The next Technology Club meeting will be held on Thursday, February 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Vista Room. At this meeting, highlights of the Consumer Electronics Show, Las Vegas largest convention, will provide glimpses of leading edge products and services. SUN CITY ALIANTE STEPPERS JANUARY GREETINGS! The Aliante Steppers are looking forward to the new year, another season of dance, and time they'll spend with new member, Lourdes King. You may have seen Lourdes (Des, to her friends) around the community or performing with the Steppers this past holiday season at community events.

Des, while married to a career military officer, has traveled extensively. In Europe, she became a member of both the American Women's Group, Paris, and the American Women's Group, London; Le WIC (Women's International Club).

Des has also written a dictionary titled, SAMBALI: SAVING A DYING LANGUAGE. With a delightful personality, Des has hobbies that include piano, painting, cooking, baking, and crocheting, to name a few. Any club would be happy to have her as a member and the Aliante dance ensemble members are delighted she has joined them. VETERAN'S AUXILIARY T h e Ve t e r a n s A u x i l i a r y welcomed Deployed Love coordinators, Shaii Galang and Tiffany Shaw, from Nellis AFB to their November meeting.

Deployed Love assists and supports family members of deployed service troops and is one of the Auxiliary's charities.

Auxiliary Members made their annual lap blanket distribution to VA patients after the November 19 meeting. With the holidays in full swing, volunteers supported two December events to support Nellis' active military. The group announced their annual distribution of donations to Auxiliary charities, along with the announcement of check presentations. The Auxiliary hosted Diane Meier of Pups, Prisoners and Patriots as guest speaker in December.

If you want to support our veterans and military and are interested in joining the Auxiliary, the club welcomes you. You do NOT have to have a veteran or military family member to join! The Auxiliary offers projects and avenues of participation throughout the year. Meetings are normally held on the 3rd Tuesday of every month in the Vista Room at 9 a.m. from September through May. The January meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, January 21.
