Debra Kent, our Lifestyle Director, told me that a resident had commented to her that, “We are like a cruise ship on land.” This got me to think about all the great activities that were presented to us during the past year. I wanted to get this information to you by the first of this year; so, the numbers you see cover the period from January 2023-December 2023, but there are still some people attending in December, who are not accounted for in the grand total. The total number of attendees is in excess of 6,445.

FINALLY! THE SECRET OF HAPPINESS What keeps us healthy and happy as we go through life? To answer that question, in 1938 Harvard University began the longest study in human happiness. They followed a group for 85 years in order to find the number one thing that keeps us happy in life. The group was from a variety of economic and social backgrounds. The researchers didn't just use questionnaires – they actually interviewed the participants. The findings indicate that specific traits and behaviors were linked with increased Nancy Prince levels of happiness across the entire group. You may be surprised to learn that the most consistent finding from the 85 years of the study is: Positive relationships keep us happier, healthier and even help us live longer. Social connections are really good for us. The more that people are socially connected to family, friends and community, the happier and physically healthier they are. And they live longer than people who are less well connected. Loneliness can become toxic. People who are more isolated than they want to be are less happy, their health declines earlier, and their brain functioning declines sooner. In May 2023, the United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released a new Surgeon General Advisory, “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation.” Yes, an epidemic! The report calls attention to the public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection in our country. Dr. Murthy says, “Our relationships are a source of healing and well-being hiding in plain sight – one that can help us live healthier, more fulfilled and more productive lives.” We are very fortunate to live in a vibrant and active community that provides many opportunities to stay connected and build positive relationships. As you start this new year, think about the opportunities we have to broaden our social lives. Volunteering is a great way to boost your happiness by providing a sense of purpose. Think about being a part of keeping our community and residents safe by volunteering for our Patrol group or by participating in our Neighborhood Watch group. Or how about applying to be on a committee? Committee membership means you are on a team that contributes to the decisions that impact our community and residents. Joining a club will give you fellowship with others who enjoy some of the same things you do. Attending any of our communitysponsored events can provide fun and entertainment, along with meeting new people and reconnecting with

GENERAL MANAGER FROM YOUR GENERAL MANAGER Dear Residents: I hope you enjoyed a healthy and happy holiday season. Please complete this form and turn it into the Front Desk no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, February 5, 2024. As a Board member, you will play an important leadership role in our dynamic community. CAI Nominates Sun City Aliante for 2023 Awards I am proud to announce that Sun City Aliante has once again been nominated by the Community Associations Institute (CAI) as a candidate for the 2023 Southern Nevada Outstanding Large Association of the Year. This is the sixth consecutive year our community has been considered for this prestigious award (the equivalent of the “CAI Oscar”). Sun City Aliante was nominated and won the award for 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. In 2020, we were nominated for this award. In addition, our President of the Board of Directors Warren Geller has been nominated as the Board Member of the Year, and I have been nominated as the On-Site Manager of the Year. These nominations from CAI are a recognition of the success we have achieved as a team under the direction and vision of an exceptional Board of Directors. During 2023, we worked on and completed many projects, both small and large, which I would like to share with you. 1. Investment Funds – Reinvested CDs with FirstService Financial which realized an increase of thousands of dollars more in annual interest income. 2. Advertising/Printing – Expanded The Breeze magazine from 48 to 52 pages to allow for more time-sensitive articles, newsworthy content, resident spotlights, and advertising. To offset increased costs, we raised advertising rates. I am excited to report we closed the fiscal year on June 30 with a net revenue increase of $110,526, which offset all costs and added more revenue. Kudos to Breeze Editor Trish Williamson and Office Manager Lori Daniels for a first-class community magazine and increased ad revenues. 3. Special Events – Lifestyle Director Debbie Kent has outdone herself again with another amazing year of activities and events on and off-site,

which were flawlessly executed by her amazing Front Desk Team. A few highlights include the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, the Christmas Tree Lighting, Festival of Lights, Coffee with The Board, and trips to see the Vegas Golden Knights, Aces, UNLV Runnin' Rebels and Aviators sporting events, and numerous concerts and shows on and off The Strip. Bravo to Debbie and the Lifestyle Team. 4. Spring and Fall Flings – Held on May 18 and September 21, these events offered residents an exciting opportunity to meet new friends and re-new old friendships and celebrate the season. Special thanks to the Lifestyle Committee for hosting these events. 5. New Resident Welcome & Club Open House – Welcomed over 100 new residents on October 4. Residents had an opportunity to meet the Board of Directors and see the community amenities. Our 40+ amazing Clubs and Special Interest Groups were on hand to introduce them to various activities. Special thanks to the Lifestyle Committee for hosting the event and Chartered Clubs and Special Interest Groups for their participation. 6. Arts & Crafts Shows – Held this popular event on May 10 and November 10-11. This event, designed to showcase handmade artistic items, is a fantastic shopping experience. Thanks to Elaine Goddard who oversaw all the details of these shows. 7. Advertiser's Meet & Greet - Held on March 30 and October 26, these events hosted by the Communications Committee and the Breeze Editor, Trish Williamson, gave residents a chance to meet Breeze advertisers face-toface and win lots of prizes. 8. Laugh like you're 10 Party like you're 20 Travel like you're 30 Think like you're 40

So, for my octogenarians out there, what would YOU add? I ask because I know there are many of you in our community. I know because I collect data every two years. Which brings me to the announcement that this is the year Carol Garbarino and I will be politely asking for those Age Verification forms again. Yes, AGAIN! Before some of you roll your eyes, allow me to remind you this is a federal mandate. Yes, I understand you've been living here X number of years and that your birthday didn't change, or you have filled one out before already. Well, it is a new year; we have to collect these surveys every two years. So please, don't give me or Carol grief about filling out a form. We don't have a party here in the office because we like to print, send, collect, process, and store these forms. We are merely following rules per the Fair Housing Act, so the Association does not lose its status as an Age-Restricted community. Our office will be communicating in the coming months when the forms will be distributed and the due date. For new homeowners who registered with Carol within the past 6 months, I know she mentioned this to you during your one-onone orientation with her. Have you stopped by the Community Center lately? If so, you have likely seen our new coffee machines. Aren't they a treat?! The Board and Management know we can never please everyone, but a wholesome number of you are really happy with it. That's what is important. (My turn to roll my eyes to the few who complained why we even changed it at all.) Please do not forget to put away all your beautiful holiday decorations and lights within thirty (30) days after the holiday has ended. Did you change your phone number, email address or your mailing address? Do we have your current emergency contacts and their current phone numbers on file? Please take a few minutes to email Carol Garbarino, our customer service coordinator at cgarbarino@suncityaliante.us to update your information today. The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) will meet on January 4 and 5. Please remember any exterior change to your home requires the approval of the ARC Committee before you proceed with any project. If you have an application to submit, please do so no later than 3 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to the meeting. We strive to keep you well informed. To that end, we have included a copy of the Bulk Trash Pickup Schedule for 2024 in the January issue of The Breeze. Please post in your home or garage for reference. The Administrative Offices will be closed all day on January 15 in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday and reopen at 8 a.m. the following day on January 16. The Community Center will be open regular hours on January 15, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you have any questions or need any clarifications, please contact me at 702638-5006 or at assistantmanager@suncityaliante.us. ASSOCIATION NEWS

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Happy New Year! I want to devote some of this article to New Year's Eve traditions. Check out these fun facts and ideas as you begin a brand New Year. “Auld Lang Syne” is the title of a Scottish folk song, which roughly translates to “days gone by” that many of us sing to celebrate the New Year. The poet Robert Burns is credited with transcribing, adapting and partially rewriting it in the late 18th century. Its lyrics, which rhetorically ask whether “auld acquaintance” should “be forgot,” have been interpreted as a call to remember friends and experiences from the past. Though sung on New Year's Eve since the mid-19th century, it became firmly cemented as a holiday standard when Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians played it during a radio broadcast from New York's Roosevelt Hotel at midnight on December 31, 1929. New Year's Eve Resolutions – People have made pledges to change their habits for an estimated 4,000 years, beginning with the ancient Babylonians, who made promises to earn the favor of the gods and start the year out right. For 2024, the Forbes Health/OnePoll survey found some resolutions to be more common than others, with the most popular goals including: Improved fitness (48%) Improved finances (38%) Improved mental health (36%) Lose weight (34%) Improved diet (32%). Other top resolutions include spending more time with family and friends, less time on social media, reducing stress on the job, learning a new hobby, getting organized, traveling and reading more. Each year, it is estimated that 80 percent of New Year's resolutions are abandoned by February, but if you are really committed, do not give up. If you fall off track, get back on quick. Celebrating the first baby of the New Year has been a symbol of the holiday since around 600 B.C., starting in ancient Greece when an infant was paraded around in a basket in celebration of Dionysus, the god of fertility (and wine). According to tradition, babies born on the first day of the year grow up to enjoy the luckiest of lives, bringing joy and good fortune to those around them. Why January 1 is the beginning of the New Year? Over the centuries, the calendar fell out of sync with the sun, and in 46 B.C. Julius Caesar decided to solve the problem by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of his time. He introduced the Julian calendar, which closely resembles the more modern Gregorian calendar that most countries around the world use today. As part of his reform, Caesar established January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honor the month's namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future. In medieval Europe, Christian leaders replaced January 1 as the first of the year with days carrying more religious significance, such as December 25 (the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth). Pope Gregory XIII reestablished January 1 as New Year's Day in 1582. During January, we will offer some interesting seminars in the Community Center, including a DOC TALK with Intermountain Healthcare on January 12, which focuses on setting realistic New Year's resolutions. Join Glenda Billingsley on January 17 to explore all of the FREE resources available in our local library, including classes and activities, eBooks, DVDs, audiobooks, a legal kiosk and much more. Dr. Devin Luzod will host a Lunch 'n' Learn on January 22 to discuss ways to manage arthritis. The Communications Committee offers an opportunity to help you “Get Savvy on the Sun City Aliante Website” on January 29. (Source: History.com) Wishing you an awesome 2024 filled with happiness and good health! Trish Williamson Editor, The Breeze

COUNCILMAN WARD 4 RICHARD CHERCHIO Hello Sun City Residents and Happy New Year! As we close out 2023 I just want to take a moment and share some recent holiday activities that I have been so blessed to be a part of this past year. As you know, I am strong supporter of our veterans, military families and first responders, so being invited to take part in this year's Veterans Day Parade – the largest Veterans Day Parade west of the Mississippi – was truly exciting. It was wonderful to be joined by my other City Council members, our incredible North Las Vegas Fire Department and first responders, and the hundreds of community members who came out to recognize and thank the men and women who have served our country. I also had a blast at our own North Las Vegas Police Department's 3rd Annual Turkey Bowl. If you're not familiar with this event, our NLVPD officers and high school students participate in a lively flag football game. After last year's loss to the students, NLVPD emerged victorious this year with a final score of 26-14. Thank you to retired NFL player, Xavier Grimble for coaching and Legacy High School for hosting. Events like this help build a bond between residents and law enforcement, making our community stronger. Our holiday celebrations really kicked off with the Annual Tree Lighting outside of City Hall in Liberty Park. We were joined by wonderful community and school performers who shared their talents including the Legacy High School Orchestra, Ballet Folklorico Halcones de Jim Bridger Middle School, CIVICA Nevada Caroling Choir and Cheerleaders, and the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Academy Singers. Their performances along with a reading of “The Night Before Christmas” by Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown and a special visit from Santa Claus got everyone in the spirit! I was lucky enough to continue the holiday festivities throughout the month, being invited to Sun City Aliante's Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and Menorah Lighting, as well as Chabad of North Las Vegas' Menorah Lighting and Chanukah Celebration. It is such an honor to be able to celebrate the spirit of the holidays with so many of you! As we move into 2024, I know I will have many exciting events and activities to share that residents can get involved in, as well as news about new businesses, opportunities and amenities coming to our city. Before I close out this newsletter, I did want to share one recent piece of news North Las Vegas was recently named the second safest city in Nevada, and among the 100 safest cities in America. WalletHub's annual study that shows the safest cities in America, placed North Las Vegas second after Henderson, above Las Vegas. City leadership has made incredible progress in increasing public safety in our city over the past decade – a 32% decrease in violent crime since 2014 – and we are incredibly proud of this recognition. And remember, as the weather cools down please keep your dogs and pets safe during the cold winter season and follow our Ordinance No. 3053, which requires animals to be properly sheltered and cared for while being kept outdoors. Yours in service, Richard Cherchio, Ward 4 Councilman

PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST MAIL THEFT! All residents within the communities that make up Aliante have their U.S. mail delivered via Neighborhood Delivery & Collection Box Units (commonly known as cluster mailboxes). While this usually provides us with safe, prompt delivery of our mail (letters and most packages), having the mail concentrated in a single cluster mailbox can present a temptation to criminals. Although the USPS in North Las Vegas has been aggressively replacing the older, more vulnerable, cluster mailboxes, the task is ongoing.

Until all the older cluster mailboxes have been replaced with the new, much harder to break open, models, we are going to be faced with the possibility of our mail services being disrupted when our cluster mailbox is vandalized. It may be weeks, even months, before a new cluster mailbox is installed and your regular delivery resumes. Until then, you must go to the North Las Vegas Post Office at 4904 Camino Al Norte to retrieve your mail. SIGN UP FOR INFORMED DELIVERY A good way to ensure you are on top of what is coming in your mailbox is a Postal Service called Informed Delivery. Informed Delivery is a free notification mechanism that gives you the ability to digitally preview your letter-sized mail and packages that have been received at the Post Office. While this service doesn't eliminate trips to the Post Office, it does allow you to determine whether what is waiting for you is worth making the trip. To sign up for this service, go to the “usps.com” website, click on the “Register/Sign In” menu item near the top right of the window, and, unless you have previously created an account, click on the “Sign Up Now” button. Complete the sign-up process by entering a Username and Password, complete the security questions selection process, choose Personal Account, enter your contact information and home address. After registering, click on the Informed Delivery icon and then click on the “Enroll” button. At this point, you will be asked to change/update your preferences and opt-in to the Informed Delivery service. HERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL HELPFUL HINTS: • Do not leave mail in your community mailbox overnight. This is usually when thieves attack. • Deposit mail at a Post Office or blue Postal Service collection box. • If you see suspicious activity around your mailbox, please call your local police and the Postal Inspection Service. • You may be entitled to certain information and services as a result of your victimization. Call the Inspection Service for Publication 308. Mail Theft is a Federal Crime investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Rewards are payable for information leading to the arrest and conviction of violators. WHAT TO DO IF YOUR MAIL IS STOLEN: If your mail has been stolen, please report the incident to the Postal Inspection Service at (877) 676-2455 or go online and visit http://postalinspectors.uspls.gov. • Due to the nature of your service request (Theft), the case would probably be turned over to the Postal Investigation Department and there is no estimated time they can provide regarding when someone in the department will contact you. They usually only contact if they have questions that could help them with the case. • The local post office at Meadow Mesa office will be the one to contact for any updates on when the mailboxes will be replaced or repaired. • The Postal Department recommends homeowners get a P.O Box in the meantime for their mail or put a hold on their mail. • The Postal Department encourages filing a service request/report by all affected residents or any future residents who may become victims of vandalism/theft so that more attention is drawn to the targeted area. The Direct phone number for Meadow Mesa office is 702-657-6888 Residents can submit a Service Request via phone with an agent, email, or text.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MONTHLY BULLETIN: NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Our Neighborhood Coordinator Jim Blossey became a Block Captain in 2005 when our community was new. All of the Block Captains met new residents as they moved in. When they met their neighbors, those new to Sun City were anxious to learn about Neighborhood Watch, what NW could do for them and how residents could participate. Over the years, things seem to have changed. The last few years, some residents seem to have lost interest. Some seem to think that they no longer need Neighborhood Watch. Some won't answer the door. They think we don't hear them telling their dog not to bark. We've learned from the North Las Vegas Police Dept that you always want to acknowledge someone at your door. You don't have to open the door but at least acknowledge that you're home. A burglar might think you are not home and possibly attempt to break into your home. Please know that Neighborhood Watch is made up of volunteers, residents just like you who care about our community and want to make it a safer place to live. Neighborhood Watch meetings are very informal. Just swipe your activity card at the Front Desk and join us in the Social Hall. Meetings start at 4:30 p.m. and last about 1 hour. We invite and urge residents to attend. At our meetings, we provide statistics and maps showing any crimes that may have occurred in the community, whether it's a break-in or a stolen car. We give helpful safety tips for keeping your home as safe as possible. At our January 18, 2024 meeting, we will talk about the crimes that may have occurred in the community for all of 2023. You have a chance to ask questions and find out what's going on in the community.

COMMUNICATIONS DID YOU KNOW!

… Emergency Contacts in your Sun City Aliante website (SunCityAliante.org) account are a great resource for our community administrator's to assist in an urgent situation? Recently, a home was damaged during an accident. The responding police had to do extra detective work to identify the resident before being able to notify them because they had not registered for a website account. Adding Emergency Contacts to your profile can help when you cannot be reached. Emergency information is easily added to our website by choosing “Your Profile” after logging in, then selecting “Update Profile.” An account can be created by selecting “Register” on the website and completing your personal profile. New accounts and changes can also be made by completing a “Green Card” which you can pick up at the Front Desk in the Community Center. Rest assured that Emergency Contact information is confidential and does not appear in the community Address Book. Only administrators have access to this information for appropriate situations. We hope you are safe in our community and are prepared if the need arises. Have a Happy New Year all year long. ~ The Communications Committee

MACULAR DEGENERATION: THE LEADING CAUSE OF BLINDNESS

Thursday, January 18, 11 a.m.

What is it? Age-related macular degeneration, also referred to as AMD, is one of the most common causes for severe vision loss within the United States among adults above the age 60. Unfortunately, a lot of the people who suffer with AMD do not realize they have a macular problem until they start to see blurring or distortion in their vision. The term AMD refers to the gradual and continual breakdown of the macula, the portion in a person's eye that helps to provide the detailed central vision that is required for clearly seeing objects. Over time, deterioration of the eye can have a serious impact on an individual's ability to read well, drive safely, recognize faces, navigate stairs, and perform a variety of other daily tasks. What can be done about it? Join Dr. Mark Stradling and learn about the latest in diagnosis and treatment for maintaining your eyesight with a physician from Nevada Eye Physicians. Breathing is such a precious gift and we just take it for granted. Your lungs and respiratory system are amazing and incredibly hard-working organs. But they are not immune to the passage of time. As you age, changes affect your lung tissue, muscles and bones, which all impact your breathing. After about 35, their function declines as you age and as a result, breathing can slowly become more difficult over time. These changes can result in symptoms such as tiredness and shortness of breath. There are several simple ways to help protect your lungs and maintain a better respiratory function throughout your life. Join Henry Clay Jr. BSRT, RRT-NPS, a Respiratory Therapist, on January 30 to learn more about common respiratory diseases and their treatments. Seating is limited. HEALTH & FITNESS

MEET JODY O'CONNELL – OUR NEW TAI CHI INSTRUCTOR

HOW MUCH SHOULD THE AVERAGE ADULT EXERCISE EVERY DAY?

We are excited to welcome Jody O'Connell to our Sun City Aliante family as our newest Fitness Instructor. She specializes in teaching Tai Chi, a gentle form of exercise that can help maintain your strength, flexibility, and balance.

For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends these exercise guidelines:

She has practiced Tai Chi since 1996 and studied with Master Tung Kai Ying at the Academy of Tai Chi Chuan in West Los Angeles since 2002. She has taught Tai Chi in Las Vegas for the past seven years. Tai Chi is often described as “meditation in motion”, but it could be called “medication in motion.” In this low-impact exercise, you go though a series of motions. As you move, you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention on your body sensations. There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice, which originated in China as martial art, has value in treating or preventing many health problems. It can help you maintain strength, flexibility, and balance and could be the perfect activity for the rest of your life. “My main focus is helping my students to improve their balance, coordination, memory, and reduce stress. I want students to find Tai Chi an easy activity in a peaceful environment and strive to help them relax and have fun in my classes,” explained Jody. “According to many doctors, Tai chi can be a very effective exercise for older adults. It rests and refreshes the mind at the same time that it exercises and conditions the body. Also, Tai Chi does not require any special equipment ~ just loose fitting clothes, lightweight, comfortable flat shoes,” continued Jody. “Although Tai chi is slow and gentle and doesn't leave you breathless, it addresses the key components of fitness- muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and to a lesser degree aerobic conditioning.“ The benefits of Tai Chi include: • • • • • • • •

Improving balance and coordination Improving muscle strength & flexibility Promoting deep breathing Reducing bone loss Improving lower body and leg strength Helping arthritis pain Reducing blood pressure Accumulating energy by releasing endorphins rather than depleting them

Enhancing mental capacity and concentration Tai Chi can be easily adapted for anyone, from the most fit to people confined in wheelchairs or recovering from surgery. Jody offers Tai Chi classes now at the Community Center every Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. A Fitness Class fee of $3 applies. Find out whether the practice of Tai Chi may be just what you need to strengthen your mind and body for the rest of your life. Join Jody for an amazing Tai Chi experience.

Aerobic activity. • Get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week or at least 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week. You also can get an equal combination of moderate and vigorous activity. Aim to spread out this exercise over a few days or more in a week. • For even more health benefits, the guidelines suggest getting 300 minutes a week or more of moderate aerobic activity. Exercising this much may help with weight loss or keeping off lost weight. But even small amounts of physical activity can be helpful. Being active for short periods of time during the day can add up and have health benefits. Strength training. • Do strength training exercises for all major muscle groups at least two times a week. One set of each exercise is enough for health and fitness benefits. Use a weight or resistance level heavy enough to tire your muscles after about 12 to 15 repetitions. Moderate aerobic exercise includes activities such as brisk walking, biking, swimming and mowing the lawn. Vigorous aerobic exercise includes activities such as running, swimming laps, heavy yard work and aerobic dancing. You can do strength training by using weight machines or weights, your own body weight, heavy bags or resistance bands. You also can use resistance paddles in the water or do activities such as rock climbing. As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. If you want to lose weight, keep off lost weight or meet specific fitness goals, you may need to exercise more. Cutting down on sitting time is important, too. The more hours you sit each day, the higher your risk of metabolic problems. Sitting too much can negatively affect your health and longevity, even if you get the minimum suggested amount of daily physical activity. And some research has found that people who've lost weight may be more likely to keep off the lost weight by sitting less during the day. Short on long chunks of time? Even brief bouts of activity offer benefits. For instance, if you can't fit in one 30-minute walk during the day, try a few five-minute walks instead. Any activity is better than none at all. What's most important is making regular physical activity part of your lifestyle. (Source: Edward R. Laskowski, M.D., The Mayo Clinic www,mayoclinic.org)

TRAVEL & DINING

POST HOLIDAY TRAVEL LANDSCAPE: BEWARE OF SCAMS AND DEALS By April Bielefeldt

As the holiday cheer subsides, and the End of year sales begin, the allure of unbeatable deals can be irresistible, promising dream vacations at jaw-dropping prices. As seasoned travelers, it's crucial to exercise caution when encountering offers that seem too good to be true. In this article, I will explore a few potential pitfalls of overly enticing travel deals and share tips on how to distinguish genuine bargains from potential scams. 1. The Hidden Costs Dilemma: Unveiling the Fine Print Travel deals that appear too good to be true often hide behind a veil of enticing prices, only to reveal hidden costs later on. See who is offering the “deal” if it is a Third Party site you can google them, you can check to see if they have had any complaints filed with The Better Business Bureau. www.bbb.org. 2. Airfare Deals: Be mindful that if you use a third party vendor for getting a cheaper flight, IF the flight is canceled or delayed the AIRLINE won't give you a voucher for anything so this may be something to consider.

that their travel plans are not only exciting but also secure and legitimate 4. FREE items: In the realm of travel scams, all travelers should exercise caution when faced with seemingly generous offers of free items from locals. An increasingly common tactic involves individuals approaching tourists with free bracelets or seemingly harmless gifts, only to later demand payment or create a distraction for an accomplice to pickpocket. S i m i l a r l y, t h e allure of a free or one-dollar T-shirt may hide an elaborate scheme aimed at coaxing unsuspecting travelers into parting with their money. To stay savvy, it's essential to be skeptical of unsolicited gifts and maintain a polite but firm refusal. Travelers should always remain vigilant, trust their instincts, and avoid accepting items or engaging in transactions that seem too good to be true. If you are going to a country where you are unfamiliar with the language, you MAY want to go with someone you trust or join a small group. On my recent trip to Egypt the in-person attempts to sell us items or lure us away from our group to shops out of view was very common. We were advised to avoid eye contact, try to dress in a way not to draw attention and avoid carrying a purse. You can look at YouTube videos from recent travelers to see what locals are wearing.

3. Beware of High-Pressure Tactics: Take Your Time Scammers often employ high-pressure tactics, urging immediate action to secure an incredible deal. Whether it's an unsolicited phone call promising an unbeatable vacation package, an urgent email claiming you've won a free trip, or a too-good-to-be-true deal requiring immediate full payment, scammers frequently employ highpressure tactics to exploit unsuspecting SunCity seniors. Recognize the red flags. First, be wary of unsolicited offers; reputable travel deals seldom come knocking unexpectedly. Second, avoid deals demanding instant payment in full; legitimate providers often offer secure and flexible payment options. Third, take the time to independently verify offers through trusted sources, such as official websites or recognized travel agencies. Ask for information to be mailed to you. Ask a trusted relative or friend to look over the information, often a second set of eyes can spot holes, websites that are slightly misspelled and other signs of trouble. By maintaining a cautious and deliberate approach, Sun City Aliante residents can sidestep impulsive decisions, ensuring

5. Booking Trips: When shopping for Travel “Deals” refer to trusted sites like AAA – The Automobile Association, Frommer's Travel, and others with staff who check and vet these opportunities. You may also want to sign up for alerts like Going.comhttps://www.going.com/, Frommer'shttps://www.frommers.com/deals/vacations, Rick Steveshttps://www.ricksteves.com/ While the world of travel is brimming with genuine opportunities for unforgettable experiences, travelers of all ages must approach seemingly unbeatable deals with a cautious eye. By staying informed, conducting thorough research, and trusting your instincts, we can continue to explore the world with confidence, ensuring that our travel adventures are as enriching as they are affordable. April Bielefeldt- April Bielefeldt, the insightful author of this article, is not just a wordsmith but a seasoned explorer with a passion for creating enriching travel experiences. With a keen eye for authenticity and a knack for uncovering hidden gems, April leads small group tours that go beyond the typical tourist paths. https://www.yourphototravelguide.com.

CHARTERED CLUBS

ALIANTE CLASSY CHEFS

CERAMICS CLUB Happy New Year! As members say in ceramics, "Live like you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." Members hope this year finds you in good health.

The Aliante Classy Chefs celebrate the holiday season. The Classy Chefs celebrated Christmas and the holidays with a non-bake treat-making session at their December meeting. Hjordy Wagner brought all the fixings and had members work in small groups to make the wonderful treats. Members also prepared Hot Shredded Beef and Pulled Pork Sliders, along with a Tuna Crescent and Chicken Salad Croissants. Diane Lazarus and Phyllis Minster prepared traditional latkes. David Hwu brought a meatball soup, and as usual, the decorating team made it all festive. Classy Chefs usually meets the first Tuesday of every month promptly at 9:30 a.m. in the Vista Room and the kitchen. The next meeting, however, has been postponed to January 9 to allow members time to return after the New Year. The theme will be Chinese New Year with Ginger Chicken Stir Fry and Egg Rolls anticipated. There is an annual $10 dues, plus a $5 per meeting charge to help reimburse grocery purchases for those cooking, plates and decorations. Correct change is appreciated when paying your dues. For club information, call Freda Porter-Katz at 347-581-0298 and email fre2bfreda@aol.com or co-chair Hjordy Wagner at 715-529-9728 and email hwizwag@gmail.com.

LGBT & SOCIAL GROUP

SENIORS WITH WARM HEARTS

Wow, its 2024. If you are interested in beginning the new year by joining our group or finding out about activities they have planned, please call Sheryl at 818-517-0610 or text Steve at 847-409-4069.

Seniors with Warm Hearts wishes everyone a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude for the outpouring of generosity from the members of our community for the donations we received for our 2023 Season of Giving. We can report that for the Project 150 Thanksgiving Meal Program that we raised over $675.00 from the community. In addition, we would like to thank the members of the Glad Hatters of Lamb of God Lutheran Church for their donations of over 400 knitted hats which were distributed to four of the charities that we supported this past holiday season.

The group wants to highlight Bayard Rustin this month and the Netflix movie "Rustin." The movie is about Bayard Rustin and his part in organizing the Civil Rights March of 200,000 people on Washington in 1963, despite incredible obstacles, prior to iPhones and the Internet. The March and Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous speech delivered there, "I Have a Dream," were pivotal to the Civil rights movement. Because Rustin was gay, he was generally forced to work behind the scenes and often forgotten in history until recent years. Even though Rustin will never see the acknowledgement, group members are happy his actions and accomplishments are being recognized and honored. Members recommend you see the "Rustin" Netflix movie that recently came out, and other documentaries about him now available. The Group will gather to watch "Rustin" together in January in honor of Bayard Rustin and Martin Luther King, Jr. (celebrated on Jan. 15th this year). LBGT members hope you are inspired and continue to live life to its fullest in 2024.

PICKLEBALL Sarah Smith (l) proudly stands with Lynn Hyche in front of Pickleball Championship banner. Two SCAL Pickleball Club members participated in the 2023 USA Pickleball National Championships. Club president, Sarah Smith, and fellow club member, Lynn Hyche, were among the 50,000-plus attendees who took part in the history-making event. Players competed in approximately 3,000 more matches than in 2022. The 7-day event held in Farmer's Branch, Texas, (a suburb of Dallas) holds the record for having the largest ever number of pickleball players come to compete in this annual tournament. Most came with hopes of achieving top-level rewards for being “The Best of the Best!” Lynn competed in two events and was among the record-setting 3,500 pro and amateur players representing 49 states and Washington, D.C. This tournament allowed her to mingle with hundreds of other highly skilled players of all ages, build new relationships and she even sat courtside to watch and learn from several professional players whose matches were televised. Sarah, a USA Pickleball Certified Referee, refereed more than 80 matches played by both amateur and professional players, including World #1 Female, Anna Leigh Waters, and World #1 Male, Ben Johns. “It was an experience I hope never to forget. I officiated players as young as 9 years old and others older than 80. I love this game with the crazy name and hope to continue to support its growth and popularity as a player and a tournament official.” Contact Sarah Smith (702-635-4629) if you're interested in learning more about pickleball or the Sun City Aliante Pickleball Club. Free lessons for beginners are taught weekly on Tuesday evenings at 5 p.m, (winter schedule). Day and time may change in the spring.

We were also thrilled that we were able to supply many toys and wish list items for the children at SAFE House as well as gift cards and items requested by the moms. In addition, we were able to donate gift cards and wish list items to support Street Teens. Serving Our Kids was truly appreciative for the donations to help in their support of providing elementary school children in need with weekend food bags. Finally, Goodie Two Shoes was thankful for the gift card donations for their upcoming fundraising gala. Final totals will be reported in next month's article. This month we will have a planning meeting for ways to help our fundraising efforts. We hope to be able to participate in the Project 150 Prom Closet with upcoming volunteer opportunities in February and March. Our planning meeting will be held on Thursday, January 18 at 2 p.m. in the Activity Room. All members are invited to attend. For more information about the organizations we support or about joining our group, contact Carol Hoyt at 702-647-1289 or Karen Nutto at 201-7879391. Thank you, Karen Nutto

VETERAN'S AUXILIARY One of Sun City Aliante Veterans Auxiliary's biggest projects is making lap blankets throughout the year and distributing them to patients at the VA Hospital during the holiday season. Members completed their task this year on November 14. Such a very gratifying experience! The December 19th meeting for the Auxiliary was their social holiday meeting. Members got a chance to share a little brunch and visit. The Auxiliary added a new charity to their project beneficiaries. They now donate to Harvison House, a local non-profit that furnishes homes for needy veterans. Harvison House takes in furniture donations to accomplish their mission, and the Auxiliary encourages Sun City Aliante residents to consider this endeavor whenever ready to dispose of furniture.
