CHINESE NEW YEAR - YEAR OF THE RABBIT

Chinese New Year 2023 is a Year of the Rabbit, more specifically, Water Rabbit, starting from January 22, 2023, and lasting until February 9, 2024. Recent/upcoming years of the Rabbit are 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023, and 2035. If you were born in one of the years, then you are a Rabbit.

The Rabbit is the fourth of all zodiac animals. Legend has it the Rabbit was proud—arrogant even—of its speed. He was neighbors with Ox and always made fun of how slow Ox was. One day, the Jade Emperor said the zodiac order would be decided by the order in which the animals arrived at his party. Rabbit set off at daybreak. But when he got there, no other animals were in sight. Thinking that he would obviously be first, he went off to the side and napped. However, when he woke up, three other animals had already arrived. One of them was the Ox he had always looked down upon.

Rabbits are earnest with everything they do; they just ask that others treat them the same way. In Chinese culture, rabbits represent the moon. Some say it is because the shadows of the moon resemble a rabbit. Others say it is because of the rabbit's pure characteristics.

Personality and Characteristics

To outsiders, the Rabbit's kindness may make them seem soft and weak. In truth, the Rabbit's quiet personality hides their confidence and strength. They are steadily moving towards their goal, no matter what negativity the others give them. With their good reasoning skills and attention to detail, they make great scholars. They are socializers with an attractive aura. However, they find it hard to open up to others and often turn to escapism. A plain and routine life is not their style. Though conservative and careful in their actions, they need surprises every so often to spice things up.

Men born in the Rabbit year are extraordinarily polite and do whatever they can to avoid conflicts. They have control over themselves and are sometimes conservative. They may seem to be a yes-man, but they have a bottom line that they will not cross. These men like organizing and decorating, and often help their wives with chores. But that does not mean they actually like being responsible for the home. Though a great friend, they do not like becoming too close to someone.

Women born in the Rabbit year love being social. They are thoughtful and treat everyone politely. They are very conscious of their public image and hate violence and arguments. In love, they are very extreme. There is a clear difference between who they love and who they do not. And they rarely pass that line. But if they love someone, they will put everything into the relationship. But the deeper they go, the more hurt they can get. These Rabbits are more insecure than other zodiacs and need to be reassured often.

ALIANTE CLASSY CHEFS

The Classy Chefs held their Holiday meeting on December 6. Once again, Cathy Pierce and crew did a fantastic job of setting a holiday decorated table. Hjordy Wagner brought ham balls; Bill James made sweet potatoes; Amy Redd made a broccoli & rice casserole; Kathy Terry made cranberry & brie bites; Phyllis Minster made a strudel; and Sylvia Ross brought decorated cookies. They also celebrated the season with a blind gift exchange. Delightful!

PICKLEBALL CLUB

To celebrate the end of another year, the Pickleball Club collected $700 in donations to support the local charity and non-profit organization, “Goodie Two Shoes.”

The Goodie Two Shoes Foundation, a Las Vegas-based 501c3 charitable organization, uses a mobile 48' custom shoe-store-on-wheels to meet and provide shoes and socks for 10,000 at-risk Southern Nevada children annually. The children get to select their shoes and volunteers make sure the shoes fit properly and are “just like the ones their friends at school are wearing.” Thank you to all who donated.

Although residents do not have to join the Pickleball Club, we look forward to sharing the love of our sport by providing free lessons to anyone. If you are interested in learning more about pickleball, “The fastest growing sport in the United States,” see page 46 of this issue of the magazine fordetails.

The Club Officers for 2023 are: Sarah Smith, President; Sylvie Courtemarsh; VP/Secretary; Susan Davis, Treasurer; Lynn Kiedrowski, Ball Manager. Congratulations to the 2023 Pickleball Officers!

SENIORS WITH WARM HEARTS

Members are shown in front of the Serving OurKids facility.

Seniors with Warm Hearts wishes everyone a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. They would also like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude for the outpouring of generosity for the donations they received from the members of the community during their 2022 Season of Giving. For the Project 150 Thanksgiving Meal Program, they raised over $1,005.00 from the community.

Additional monies and gift cards received for Christmas will be reported in next month's article. They were also thrilled they were able to supply many of the wish list items to the children and moms at SAFE House, as well as gift cards to assist them as they start to rebuild their lives. In addition, they were able to donate gift cards and necessity items to support Street Teens. Last but not least, Serving Our Kids was truly appreciative for the donations to help in their support of providing elementary school children in need with weekend food bags.

This month they will continue to volunteer at the Serving Our Kids bagging event as well as coordinating future activities in conjunction with some of these charities and possible new ones. To coincide with these efforts, the club will have a meeting to brainstorm for different activities that the club can conduct this year. This meeting is open to all members and will be on Tuesday, January 10 at 4 p.m. in the Activity Room. VETERAN'S CLUB

Happy New YearEveryone,

I hope your holidays were happy and joyful and spent with family and friends. It still amazes me how fast the time passes and then it is another New Year.

Looking toward the new year, our meeting in January will be Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 6 p.m. in the Vista Room. We will have a guest speaker, Andreia Kelley, the coordinator for many programs that assist the airmen and their families at Nellis/Creech. You may have seen her at the Spaghetti Dinner. Andreia and her husband were in charge of the ROTC group that helped us out throughout the evening. What a wonderful group of young men and women! Also, during the meeting, we will be looking at scheduled events for the year. Everyone's input is important so please come and join us.

If you are interested in purchasing a brick for a loved one to be placed in the Veterans Monument or donating to the Adopt-A-Flag Program, contact Sy Nielson at 702-234-9183.

Please come and join us in planning for the new year at our meeting on January 17.
