Mary Kay Campbell, President Jeanne Schottmueller, Vice President Dr. Dan Wentz, Secretary Lisa Kickbusch, Treasurer Dr. Brian J. Gray, Director Dr. Barry Nelson Superintendent Bridgeway Elementary School hosted its second annual Pumpkin Smash on Nov. 7. Families, staff and community members were invited to drop off their pumpkins from Halloween to teach sustainability and physics. Any whole pumpkins were donated to area farms for animals to eat. First, though, students got to have some fun with the them. Top left, firefighters with the Pattonville Fire Protection District dropped carved pumpkins from about 75 feet in the air. The smashed pieces were used for compost and as fertilizer for the school’s garden. Students could also do their own pumpkin drop from short ladders nearby. Top right, from left, first grader Rose Fernandez, kindergartner Nora Peak and third grader Ava Crawford watch as firefighters toss pumpkins. Above right, kindergartner Jack Braun shows part of a smashed pumpkin. Left, students bowled with pumpkins, rolling them down the slide, to see how many pins they could knock down. From left, fourth grader Ava King celebrates her roll as second grader Avery Woods waits her turn and first grader Liam McComb and fifth grader Sophia Mason pumpkin bowl on the other lane.
