4TH YEAR ARCHITECTURE STUDENT
THE APLIN CENTER OF HOSPITALITY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS A NEW DEVELOPMENT FOR THE TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. THE PROPOSAL INCLUDES A +200,000 SQFT SCHOOL AND HOTEL CENTER WHERE THE STUDENTS ENROLLED WILL ALSO BE TAKING CARE OF THE HOTEL GUESTS AND RUN THE DAILY OPERATIONS.

THIS PROJECT, WHILE ALSO BEING MY INTEGRATED STUDIO PROJECT, PROPOSED MANY CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES. IT WAS A GROUP PROJECT OF FOUR AND EACH BUILDING WAS SPLIT INTO TWO PEOPLE, ME AND MY PARTNER HAD THE EDUCATIONAL BUILDING. OUR GROUPS’ INTENTION WAS TO CREATE TRANSPARENCY THROUGH INTENTIONALLY EXPOSING THE LAYERS OF SPACES, STRUCTURE, AND MATERIALS TO FACILITATE OWNER AND USER ENGAGEMENT WITH EACH OTHER AND THE BUILDING TO ENCOURAGE HOSPITALITY. WE FELT THE TWO BUILDINGS SHOULD FOSTER UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES TO CONNECT THE STUDENTS AND THE HOTEL GUESTS.
IN THE CENTER OF THE SITE BETWEEN THE TWO BUILDINGS LIES THE MAIN CONNECTION POINT, A PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY THAT HELPS CONNECT POINTS ON THE TAMU CAMPUS WHILE ALSO HOUSING PROGRAMS THAT BOTH THE STUDENTS AND THE GUESTS CAN USE: A CAFE, CONVENIENCE STORE, AND SEATING.

THIS SUMMER PROJECT IS A CONTINUATION OF THE SALVATION ARMY PROJECT FROM THE PREVIOUS SEMSTER. ME AND MY TWO GROUP MEMBERS FROM THAT PROJECT HELPED OUR PROFESSOR PRODUCE A NEW DESIGN BASED ON THE PREVOIUS DESIGNS FROM THE OTHER STUDENTS. THE BOARD OF THE SALVATION ARMY IN CHARGE TOLD US WHAT THEY LIKED AND DISLIKED AND WE WENT FROM THERE.

THE SALVATION ARMY PROJECT WAS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO BE APART OF, THE INTENTION WAS TO PARTNER WITH THE SALVATION ARMY IN BRYAN/COLLEGE STATION TO PUT FORTH A RENOVATION FOR THEIR SITE. WITH GROWING POVERTY IN THE BRYAN/COLLEGE STATION AREA THEY FELT IT WAS A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD A FACILITY THAT NOT ONLY WAS TO PERFORM THEIR DAILY OPERATIONS BUT ALSO TO HOUSE FAMILIES THAT ARE STRUGGLING TO GET OUT OF POVERTY.
POVERTY IS A NASTY CYCLE THAT NEEDS MORE THAN JUST HOUSING TO BREAK, THE PEOPLE WHO ARE VICTIMS OF THIS NEED A PROGRAM TO HELP THEM LEARN HOW TO ADJUST TO LIFE RATHER THAN LIFE ADJUSTING THEM. THIS FACILITY WHILE ALSO PROVIDING HOUSING IS CAREFULLY DESIGN TO HELP ENCOURAGE THE RESIDENTS TO WANT TO CHANGE THEIR LIFE FOR THE BETTER, BY CREATING AN ENVIRNONMENT TO CHEER THEIR LIVES UP DURING THIS HARD TIME.

THE CHALLENGE WAS TO CREATE A PLACE THAT FELT LIKE HOME BUT ALSO ENCOURAGED THEM TO WANT TO GET BACK OUT INTO THE WORLD FOR ANOTHER CHANCE. SO WE TOOK A SIMPLE APROACH TO THE DESIGN BY BREAKING DOWN THE IMAGE OF A HOME AND THEN TO CATEGORIZE THE PROGRAMS WE FELT WERE IMPORTANT BASED OFF OF A SENSE OF PRIVACY. THIS WAS A HELPFUL AND STRATEGIC WAY TO ORGANIZE TO FACILITY WHICH HELPED INFLUENCE THE DESIGN. THE FUNTION INFLUENCED THE FORM.

AT THE CENTER OF OUR DESIGN IS A FELX ROOM, ONE THAT CAN BE CHANGED BASED ON THE DESIRES OF THE USERS. THE ROOM IS A LARGE OPEN SPACE THAT CAN ALSO EXPAND DEPENSING ON THE NEEDS DUE TO THE GARAGE DOORS THAT OPEN TO THE TWO ADJACENT COURTYARDS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PROJECT.

PROPOSAL FOR AN ADU TO THE SINGLE-FAMILY DETACHED VERNACULAR HOUSE FOUND IN THE BRYAN/COLLEGE STATION AREA FROM PROJECT 01.
THE DESIGN PROPOSAL IS DRAWS HEAVILY ON LOUIS KAHN’S FISHER HOUSE. KEY DESIGN MOVES SUCH AS THE HINGE AND HOW THE HINGE DIRECTLY AFFECTS THE RELATIONSHIP OF EXPANSION/COMPRESSION AND THAT OF THE VERNACULAR HOUSE.

THIS PROJECT CHALLENGED ME TO CREATE A DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR A NEW CONCEPT TO TACKLE MULTIUNIT ‘MISSING MIDDLE’ HOUSING ON A TWO-ACRE SITE . THE DESIGN AND CONCEPTS USED FOR THE PROPOSAL ARE BASED ON THOSE DISCOVERED IN THE PRECEDENT STUDIES FROM PROJECT 01.
THE IDEA BEHIND NEW MISSING MIDDLE HOUSING TYPES IS TO CREATE A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND COHESIVNESS WITHIN A NEIGHBORHOOD SO WE CAN FURTHER DEVELOP BETTER USE OF MASS-PRODUCED HOUSING IN FAST-GROWING CITIES WHERE MORE HOUSING FAST IS DESIRABLE.

THIS PROJECT BUILT UPON THIS IDEA OF PRECEDENT ANALYSIS USING THE MENIL COLLECTION CAMPUS LOCATED IN HOUSTON. WE WERE TASKED TO STUDY THE PERSISTENCIES AND SPATIAL DESIGN MOVES OF THE MENIL CAMPUS AND APPLY THESE IDEAS INTO A BUILDING PROPOSAL TO BE PLACED WITHIN A GIVEN SITE ON THE MENIL CAMPUS. EACH GROUP MEMBER WAS TASKED TO DESIGN A BUILDING SO WE HAD TO COLLABORATE AS A GROUP TO MAKE SURE OUR BUILDINGS COLLABORATED ARCHITECTURALLY TO CREATE A COHESIVE SITE PROPOSAL.

THIS PROJECT LARGELY INTRODUCED AND HELPED FRAME MY UNDERSTANDING OF ABSTRACT DESIGN CONCEPTS. THESE INCLUDE HIERARCHY, SOLID/VOID, REGULATING LINES, COMPRESSION/EXPANSION, AND THE IDEA OF PHYSICAL AND PHENOMENAL TRANSPARENCY.

PROJECT 04 WAS LARGELY BASED ON PROJECT 03 BY TASKING US TO DEVELOP ONE OF THE OTHER SHAPES (THE HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL RECTANGULAR PRISM) WITHIN THE SITE PLAN PROPOSAL IN PROJECT 01. HOWEVER, THIS PROJECT ALSO GAVE US A SENSE OF CONSTRAINT THROUGH THE USE OF DESIGN MOTIFS INDIVIDUALLY ASSIGNED.
