Designer Craft at Bankside was organized by the SDC Exhibitions Team; Adam Hussain FSDC, Sharon Kearley MSDC, Pat Tempest (Society Administrator), Ali Tomlin MSDC (Identity & Visuals Designer), Jenny Starr (Society Executive Director) and Denise Yeates (Exhibition Producer), with special thanks to Denise Jaques MSDC. EXHIBITION INTRODUCTION Introducing Designer Craft at Bankside 2024

By Jenny Starr, Executive Director, Society of Designer Craftsmen What an honour to be presenting this group exhibition showcasing the material innovation and exquisite skill of over 70 member makers of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. This two-week multi-disciplinary show features woven and stitched textiles, ceramics, wood-carving, metal, glass, stone-carving, printmaking and mixed media works from some of the UK’s finest established and emerging craft practitioners. The exhibition reflects our intention as a society, to foster a generous and committed community for craft, and offer wider audiences a space for learning, accessing and enjoying craft narratives and practices.

An Excerpt from ‘Beyond the Object: Craft as Cultural Commentary’

By Dr Loucia Manopoulou, MA, MRes, PhD, FRSA Craft Scholar, Curatorial Researcher and Cultural Strategist Curator at the University for the Creative Arts, Surrey Text and Τέχνη (techni), the Greek term encompassing both art and craft, share deep etymological and conceptual roots. Both represent generative processes, creating an interwoven structure in which writing and making converge as partners in the production of knowledge. Just as a text uses language to communicate, craft employs material as its medium of expression. However, while linguistic texts are structured through words, sound, and meaning, crafted objects transcend verbal boundaries. Rather than concluding with a sentence, they continue to generate meaning through form, texture, and the interaction between the designer-maker and the material.

Materiality is central to craft, which stands as one of the most fundamental forms of human expression. Far from being merely decorative or functional, contemporary craft has evolved into a powerful medium for personal statements and societal critique. By intertwining material and meaning, the designer-maker transforms raw materials into objects full of personal identity, history, and cultural reflection, demonstrating craft’s rich potential as a form of storytelling.

The exhibition Designer Craft at Bankside, serves as a vibrant demonstration of how contemporary craft embodies and communicates personal and cultural narratives. The works on display by members of the Society of Designer Craftsmen highlight how craft transcends verbal and traditional boundaries, embedding personal histories and societal critiques into material forms. The exhibition illustrates the objects’ power not only as a mode of creative expression but as a dynamic and profound vehicles for reflection, connection, and cultural commentary. It reaffirms craft’s essential role in exploring and expressing the core of our shared human experience.
