Performance Notes The soloist performs with a click track, except in free sections (bar 27, 138) The tape part should be played back in stereo. The cello should be miked, with some reverb added to help the instrument blend with the mix. The cello should always be the prominent element of the mix, though during the loud, more chaotic sections of the piece, the cello may sometimes be lower in the mix without being noticeably drowned out.

Arrows indicate to move between two different playing techniques (e.g. moving the bow from sul tasto to sul ponticello).

Natural harmonic trills should be executed by alternating between an open string and a harmonic on the same string as fast as possible.

Quarter Tone Trill Notation This piece requires the cellist to trill to quarter tones. The desired effect is a shimmering, out of tune sound. The notation for these trills is as follows:

L = ¼ step lowered sharp l = ¼ step raised sharp K = ¼ step lowered natural k = ¼ raised natural S.P. = sul ponticello S.T = sul tasto

Grace note runs should be performed to the player’s convenience with regards to before the beat or on the beat, as long as the player does not lose sync with the click track. If a run is preceded by a considerable amount of resting, it is preferred that the grace notes be played before the beat, but it is ultimately the choice of the performer.

Single or double grace notes should be performed before the beat as much as possible.

Indicates very wide and slow vibrato. The effect should be an out of tune, pitchbending feeling.

Glissandos should be performed for the full duration of the note they are attached to, unless the indication of “portamento” is present.

Program Note The concept of Island Sanctuary was conceived as a proposal for a concert series of works based on some element of the theme “gameplay.” I have always been impressed by the work of 3D artists who are able to create captivating settings and environments for the worlds in which videogames take place. Games such as Myst, The Legend of Zelda, and Shadow of the Colossus come to mind, and I thought this idea of “game landscape” would make interesting subject matter for the concert. I approached an artist friend of mine about collaborating on a piece with this concept in mind, and she immediately designed a beautiful, mysterious island for the project. Her creation featured various environments such as beaches, caves, gardens, monuments etc., and her placement of these elements largely determined the content of the piece. Once she sent me the early builds of the island, I began to write music to accompany a sort of “tour” of the island, but instead of “scoring” the environment in a direct way, I opted to write music that more abstractly suggested the elements seen on the screen. The music is very much episodic, moving from one local to the next, building to a climax atop the highest point on the island.

The solo cello part not only represents the individual exploring the island, but also expresses several “water” motifs, as water is a constant element present in the visuals.

The most prominent example of this is the use of quarter tone trills, which create a shimmering, out-of-tune sound on the instrument that reminds me of images in water being distorted by ripples. The electronic tape acts as a canvas on which the player explores the island – nearly all of the soundscape is culled from sounds of real musical instruments that have been processed to some degree, in some cases beyond recognition.

A tiny bit of sound design is present as well.

Duration: 8 minutes

The term “thin place” is loosely defined as a location (natural or manmade, real or fictional) where the boundary between Earth and the Unknown is not as apparent, and one feels a brief moment of meditation or spiritual calm. While this term is usually presented with religious context, that is not my purpose here. Suffice it to say, it is a term that is very apt for how I feel about locations that provide introspection, and occasionally these settings appear to me in games. As such, I have added this piece to my works inspired by thin places.
