Open Habitat
The city of Trece Maritres is in dire need of housing provision for its displaced households informal settler families occupying danger areas
Open Habitat is a socialized housing relocation complex proposed to provide housing primarily for a particular displaced household community in Barangay Luciano
The
thesis: Open Habitat
Affordability remains to be the biggest challenge of affordable housing The most common approach towards this has been the functionalism A K A mass housing. However, mass housing have been producing empty, impersonal, small, and inappropriately designed socialized housing units It has become a source of unprecedented problems while simultaneously failing to actually make housing more affordable. Since the 70s, architects and scholars in the field have been arguing against mass housing as it is virtually impossible to gather the necessary data to create the ideal house because it is the dwellers themselves who holds these very vast and very dynamic data
Thus, the idea for this thesis was to distribute the design and construction responsibilities to the dwellers to significantly aid in cost-reduction while also giving them the opportunity to respond to their own needs. A growth framework, previewed above, aims to guide the development to prevent uncontrolled individual preferences from getting out of hand Dwellers can choose from different permutation of units according to their own particularities starting from the same core structures Single-storey permutations can later be transformed into two-storey ones given certain circumstances

Catering only to the already identified beneficiaries appeared to be an inefficient use of allocated resource Thus, at point, I decided to plan the entire 5-hectare site be able cater to all the rest of informal settler families occupying danger areas in the entire city of Trece Martires if agreed upon by all parties involved Nevertheless, the expansion be available to all qualified families seeking affordable (socialized) housing in the area A mix-use building was added in the road-side commercial zone
Moreover, the adjacent creek will inevitably trigger unsanitary tendencies from informal settler families, especially those located right beside it Hence, the entire length of the site adjacent to that creek is developed to be linear park, facing the busiest street of the development
ACThis was the very first iteration of the site plan under a planning principle inspired by Laws of the Indies to achieve a sense of organization and also as a reference to the concept that attempts to formalize informality.
In this stage, I got rid of using Laws of the Indies completely as it was not a progressive concept of planning, but rather an old-school one Instead, I focused more on orienting buildings based on site contexts and navigation
appeared this able to occupying agreed will affordable also trigger families, entire be a
EA 25-meter front setback was applied, creating a space for bargain market stalls or road-side night market during the night to still take advantage of the economic opportunities from the road This is for the possibility of road expansion
Regarding the sun heat and light mitigation, wire mesh-vine combination was applied at the rear elevation surface as sun shading device
Entry points of the development were limited to two main entrances and one for the mix use building at this point for safety and security purposes To compensate the purpose of preventing urban fragmentation, the mix-use building will serve as the inviting element into the development, lessening low-income community isolation
This was the final scheme of the site development plan before I proceeded to modelling all the site features The community facility and mix-use building, nevertheless, is already completely planned and modelled at this point
FDThe mix-use building is oriented to minimize façade surface area that receives the hottest (south-western) sun rays
To improve navigation, the community facility was turned into the main decision point of the site and roads and path walks are then directed near or towards it, creating the final arrangement of the single-family housing blocks

BAAward won PUP BestArchitecture Theses - Honorable Mention
This project, Open Habitat relocation complex for slum-dwellers occupying danger areas in the City of Trece Martires, has secured a spot in PUPCADBE’s Talaghay: 2024 Best Architecture Theses as Honorable mention The award is given to thesis students who managed to crack the top 10 best theses on final deliberations despite not being able to take RMA, Design 9, and Design 10 in three consecutive semesters
For a fun fact, best theses awardees are the same team who will organize everything for the awarding ceremony, exhibit, and promotions of the event My primary role was in promotional materials, specifically video editing for teasers The videos can be accessed by clicking either Teaser 2 or Teaser 1

Four-storey terrace house
Done for:
Architectural Internship 1 2022
This project was the main task I had to accomplish throughout my first OJT. The brief was to design a residence that has not yet been listed the firm’s directory.
The concern that I was trying to address in the project was the inevitable tendency of neighboring properties to build their own firewalls, hence, limiting natural light and air that penetrates the lot.
So I sketched out concepts and layouts whose goal is to not fully rely on setbacks alone for light and ventilation. And since neighboring firewalls were anticipated, I decided to go for a terrace house or row house type of development.
In addition to opting for a terrace house sort of development, the design also utilized tropical architecture and brutalism at the same time The abundance of open spaces, especially the USAs, is easily noticeable just by looking at the plans. The interior renders give a glimpse of the frequent use of huge openings all over the house. Aesthetically speaking, I just wanted to contrast the warmth of wood and vegetation with the calmness, coolness, and honesty of brutalism.
TROPICAL brutalism
The plans were drawn with AutoCAD and the model was created in SketchUp.All image and video renderings were done in Enscape. I used mobile video editors to weave all the animations together.
The entire output of this project is on the firm’s YouTube channel too. You can check it out here.
Mini scale model: Deployable shelter 04
Done for: Housing and Human Settlements 2022
I was the one who was tasked to create this 1:50 physical model of our group’s post-disaster deployable shelter Although I still definitely should improve my craftsmanship in making physical models like this, I think I still did a decent job after more than two years of zero physical model projects.
Two-storey residence in Imus
Done for: Building Technology 3 2022
Originally, the site of this project was two separate smaller properties We were challenged to plot both of them using lot bearings from land titles. Fortunately, I was able to figure it out without much problems and was able to see the singular lot it creates
As noticed in the plans, I really prefer large openings, particularly the floor-to-ceiling accordion patio doors.
I created this plans in AutoCAD, modelled a 3d version in SketchUp and wrapped it all up by rendering perspectives in VRay.
This is a random living room model I quickly created using SketchUp before the start of Architectural Design 10 this year to study interior lighting techniques in Enscape Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to apply this in the thesis renderings because it takes so much time to set up
