When I was beginning the journey for this year’s annual show, I started by pondering past shows, ideas, and what sounded interesting from my daily life. In my reflection, I came across an interesting anomaly. I noticed how words and letters were a big part of my artistic journey. From a young age I have loved writing and telling stories. My previous art exhibitions over the years have always employed the magic of words as a tool. I’ve developed shows around made-up characters, around poems, limericks, my environments are littered with words, and I even painted a show about the alphabet. When I finish a painting, creating the title, to add to the story, is a crucial part of the process.

When I started looking at a selection of past paintings and their titles, I found myself struck by their eerie similarity to idioms. Idioms are a magical, often surreal, description to an event or thought. We use them every day and barely pay them any attention.

“It’s raining cats and dogs.”

“Pulling the wool over their eyes.”

I decided to create a show that accentuated the relationship of phrases, words, and familiar imagery. I planned to have every painting reflective of these age-old idioms. Since idioms are very malleable and have stood the test of time, for obvious reasons, I became intrigued with the beauty of a finished painting collaborating with a timeless idiom. The result is a way to view both in an entirely new light.

This is the basis of this show.

Try to take in this alternative way of seeing the paintings. Look at them without reading the title/idiom. Then, upon reading the title, observe how the painting’s story can deepen or change in your eyes.

See how, as my favorite idiom declares, “ A picture paints a thousand words.”

Tyson Grumm has exhibited widely throughout the USA and internationally in London, His works can be found in many private and public collections in Europe and the USA, and in 2014 his work was included in a curated group show at the Mesa Art Center Museum in Mesa, AZ.
