“Synergies” is a two-person exhibition of Lynda Lowe’s paintings and the sculptural work of Deloss Webber. The two artists have been friends for decades, they collect each other’s artwork, and have often talked about collaborating. This exhibition marks their first together. Both artists have been interested in Japanese aesthetics and both have visited the country. In preparation for this show, they discussed the beauty of honoring the relationships between objects and paintings within a Japanese tokonoma, a traditional niche in a home that showcases a host’s art collection. The inclusions in a tokonoma are thoughtfully chosen and meant as a contemplative offering to the viewer. In this way, the paintings and objects are synergies shared between the host, the artists, the viewers, and the spaces in which they are displayed. It’s an interactive conversation that changes each time careful attention is given to it. This exhibition takes inspiration from the tokonoma, exploring the synergies between Lowe and Webber’s work and makes suggestions about how they might be paired in a home environment.
