Jocelyn Larocque was packing an Olympic Gold Medal when she returned to Ste. Anne recently to visit the town where her hockey legacy began.

Adding to a day of visiting schools, Larocque had an opportunity to hit the ice and skate with the girls of the Ste. Anne Aces.

Larocque currently wears #3 on her jersey to honour her uncle. Larocque was presented with a Ste. Anne Aces jersey sporting the #3 with “Guy Larocque 1963-1983” printed on the lower back.

Hockey Manitoba also came out to show their support and congratulate her on behalf of the association.

On March 2nd the Ste. Anne Lions Club worked side-by-side with the Knights of Columbus as they held a “SOUPER” Lunch fundraiser in support of a young cancer victim from Ste. Anne. It was a great success!

The hall was “SOUPER” busy with people enjoying multiple varieties of homemade soups, buns and desserts.

The Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus would like to thank everyone who came out to show their support, everyone who provided soup and deserts, and thank you to the Old No. 12 Cafe and Lounge, Casse La Prairie, Ste. Anne Co-op, Creative Printall, Steinbach Safeway, and Steinbach Sobeys for their generous support.

Chip and Nut Bars

1 c. margarine 1 3/4 c. of brown sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp. of baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla 2 c. of flour 1 tbsp. instant coffee powder 1 c. chopped nuts 1 pkg. of semi-sweet choc chips - put all ingredients, except nuts and choc chips in a large bowl - mix until well blended - stir in half of the nuts and choc. chips - grease a 10x13 pan and spread evenly - sprinkle the remaining nuts and choc. chips - bake in 350 oven for 20- 25 mins - cool - cut into bars

Seine River Services for Seniors Seine River Services for seniors are happy to announce that foot care is offered to the Ste-Anne seniors. The foot care clinic is located in the Southern Health Authority Building at 30 Dawson Rd - Unit A. We have two certified foot care nurses ready to help with any foot care concerns you may have. Nurses: Richard Rivard and Cheryl Palmer are available once a month at this location.

Taxes Going Up Board Chair Wendy Bloomfield says they’ve given direction to the administration to prepare a budget with a 3.65 per cent increase.

Bloomfield says it’s not that uncommon for taxes to go up in Seine River.

“There have been some slight increases every year,” she says. “And we’re a growing school division. We had over two hundred new students this year. So the budget increases a certain amount, related to student enrolment increase.” Bloomfield says more students translates into more bus routes, more teachers and higher salaries.

Bloomfield adds there are projects being planned which this additional revenue will now be able to fund. This includes upgrades to the division’s computer system, increasing supports for transportation by $474,000, increasing instructional student support, spending more on student fees and adding money to curriculum resource, reading recovery and technology innovation. Bloomfield says they’re also utilizing $100,000 from surplus to pour asphalt on their bus loops.

Bloomfield says they hope to give final approval to the budget at their next meeting March 11.

Three People in Custody After Robbery In the early morning hours of February 26 a masked, armed robber made off with a large sum of cash from the Ste. Anne Hotel.

Police say that one male entered the hotel after closing, produced a knife and demanded cash from the safe. The employee working handed over the cash and was then tied up. The employee was able to contact the police who attended immediately. and proceeded to investigated through the night, working with Steinbach RCMP to bring three people into custody just before noon the next day.

RCMP and Ste. Anne Police arrested a male and two females in relation to this incident in the RM of Ste. Anne. Fortunately, all of the stolen cash was recovered. Chief Robichaud says “This is an excellent example of police departments working together “.

“Last night the RCMP attended to assist us at the scene and today we are in the rural area helping them with an arrest. It’s encouraging to see how well our two police departments work together.”

He expects to release further details of this case as the investigation continues.
