Local Athlete to Play for Team Canada Canada’s elite winter athletes will be riding a wave of momentum into the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi following the unprecedented 26-medal performance four years earlier on home soil in Vancouver. The 2014 Team is poised for even greater success thanks to the combination of returning medallists, rising stars and the addition of several new events in which Canadian athletes have proven internationally strong. The Games officially begin on Feb. 7. Among Canada’s Olympic women’s hockey team - defenceman Jocelyne Larocque. Second time is the charm for Larocque, 25, who was released from the centralized roster in the run-up to the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Students Witness Shooting During Humanitarian Project

Defenceman Jocelyne Larocque from Ste. Anne. This time, she is among 21 players who will head to Sochi, including 12 veterans of the 2010 gold medal-winning team. Only one other Manitoban, Ste. Anne resident Bailey Bram, was still in contention for the final roster. The 23-year-old Bram has played on Canada’s world championship team. Larocque, who is also from Ste. Anne, twice won an NCAA Division 1 national championship with the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. She will now join a team battling for its fourth straight Olympic gold in Sochi.

Students from St. Jean Baptiste and Ste. Anne witnessed a violent robbery attempt and shooting. A day into their week-long humanitarian project at an orphanage in Puerto Plata burglars stormed the compound. The compound's Canadian owner, identified as 64-year-old Les Lehmann, got into a fight with the burglars while trying to protect four female students and their female teacher after they were briefly held at gunpoint. All 26 members of the humanitarian school trip arrived back in Winnipeg at 5 a.m. Saturday from being rushed home from the Dominican Republic, Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine superintendent Alain Laberge said. The group included 18 students and eight teachers and parentchaperones from Ecole Pointe-Des Chênes in Ste. Anne and Ecole régionale Saint-Jean-Baptiste. They had barely arrived in their dormitory on Thursday to begin a weeklong project helping an orphanage/school, when armed men broke in to rob them around 1:45 a.m. Friday. "It's a project we've been doing for years," Laberge said. "It's kind of a compound, four students per room, with a chaperone.” "The burglars went to the first room. They wanted money, cameras," Laberge said the students were not carrying much money purposely to avoid this kind of situation. "One of the girls spoke Spanish. She said, 'We have nothing,' " Laberge said. That's when it got violent. "The owner quickly stepped in between the students and the burglars," he said. "All the students in the other rooms went into their closets, hiding." The owner was shot several times and is in critical condition. The gunmen fled, and police soon arrived. Things happened fast that night. The teachers phoned their principals, Laberge was awoken in the middle of the night, he called school board chairman, and Laberge alerted his staff to start finding a way to get the group home as quickly as possible. Given the time difference, it was already 4 a.m. for the students, and police were everywhere, so Laberge concluded the dormitory was the safest place for them for the time being. They later bused to the airport in Puerto Plata and spent Friday evening at the airport in New York City. The DSFM managed to get them on a late flight with connections that arrived here at 5 a.m. Saturday. Laberge said there will be a lot of discussion before deciding whether there will be any future trips. It's the least of anyone's concerns, but the division is covering all the costs, Laberge said.

Fatal Single Vehicle Accident

Early false teeth where made up of hippopotamus bones.

A 59-year-old man died on the morning of February 3rd, after the vehicle he was a passenger in rolled on the Trans-Canada Highway, 1.5 kilometers west of Highway 12. RCMP said they will not be releasing the names of the two people involved in the crash but did say both the man and the driver of the vehicle were from the RM of Ste Anne. Police said the vehicle, an SUV, was travelling westbound when it rolled and came to a stop in the median between the westbound and eastbound lanes of the TransCanada Highway. Both occupants of the vehicle were transported to Ste Anne Hospital where the man was pronounced dead. The 73-year-old female driver has since succumbed to her injuries. Slippery conditions were considered to be a factor in this accident.
