Local Volunteer Firefighters Complete Vehicle Extraction Course

The Richer Fire Department hosted a vehicle extraction course which included three volunteer firefighters from the Ste. Anne Fire department along with nine volunteer firefighters from the Richer Fire Department. They spent the weekend of September 23 learning various ways of extracting patients from vehicle, how incident command operates on scene, scene stabilization, and utilizing equipment such as cribbing, ratchet straps and struts during extrication. Firefighters demonstrated skills in

a team environment, arriving on scene and completing roles assigned by the incident command. They also used the jaws of life and other extrication tools learning various techniques to complete side removal, tunneling, third door conversion and dash displacement of vehicles. Having more members with this knowledge will be beneficial with the volume of local vehicle incidents and proximity to the Trans Canada Hwy.

$300,000 Committed to Implement IndigenousFocused Programming for Child-Care Facilities The Province of Manitoba has announce $300,000 to support 24 child-care facilities to implement Indigenous-focused cultural programming through the Indigenous Programming Grant.

This is just one step in our government’s ongoing work to towards the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action, and we will continue to make historic investments towards reconciliation and education, said MLA Bob Lagasse in a statement released through his office.

“Our PC Government is dedicated towards truth and reconciliation, and this investment will help educate the next generation for years to come,” said Lagassé. “With this funding, child-care facilities will be able to invest in the necessary

means to integrate Indigenous programming into lessons.”

According to Lagasse, the funding will also provide support to staff to expand their knowledge of Indigenous cultures and traditions to better incorporate these lessons into programming.

Each of the 24 child-care facilities will receive grants between $5,000 and $25,000 based on the number of infant and preschool spaces offered by the facility. These facilities applied for grants through the 2020-2021 Indigenous Programming Grant intake.

“Our PC Government remains committed to truth and reconciliation and will continue to make historic investments towards Indigenous-based education and programming,” concluded Lagasse.

Second Annual Harvest Festival Farm Dog held their 2nd Annual Harvest Festival in Ste. Anne’s Redemptorist Park on October 2nd. New this year was a pancake breakfast, face painting, balloon twisting, a pop-up thrift shop, and a young makers’ market. The park had a welcoming feel to it with fall colors, cool air, and local vendors scattered throughout. Irish music with Cairde, blues and folk with Justin Lacroix, and songs from Lindsay Fialka welcomed guests.

Dancing performances by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society as well as Taekwondo demonstrations kept guests entertained while

they enjoyed some farm fresh food from Farm Dog. There were mini donuts, cotton candy and even a bouncy house. Mark your calendars for Farm Dog’s next community event will be their 2nd Annual Merry and Bright Christmas Market being held at Club Jovial 157 central, on Dec 11th from 10 am - 2 pm.

Manitoba Government Investing Almost $27 Million For Construction Project On Provincial Trunk Highway 12 The Manitoba government is investing $26.9 million for a reconstruction project on a segment of Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 12, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Doyle Piwniuk announced recently.

“Our government continues to make strategic infrastructure investments to build and maintain a safe, reliable highway network,” said Piwniuk. “Upgrades to PTH 12 were proposed as part of our Trade and Commerce Grid and I am pleased to announce a $26.9 million financial commitment for the project. The roadway will be reconstructed to accommodate increased commercial loads and meet current and future traffic volumes.”

The minister noted the project will reconstruct the section of PTH 12 between the Trans-Canada Highway and PTH 15, which has experienced rapid deterioration and rutting due to increased traffic volumes in recent years. The project includes pulverizing the existing surface, applying bituminous pavement and widening the shoulders to meet current standards. The project will also improve the intersection at Provincial Road 501, rehabilitate a railway crossing, and improve drainage in the area as required. The project tender for this major capital project will be posted to MERX at www.merx.com with an expected deadline at the end of November, the minister said

Little Funk Library Roasted Butternut Squash Apple Soup Nourishing roasted butternut squash apple soup has all the flavors of fall simmered together after roasting the squash for about 30 minutes.

Ingredients 1 butternut squash peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes 1 cup onion about 1 medium onion, cubed 1 apple cubed and core removed 1 large red or yellow potato or sweet potato, rutabaga or turnip, cubed 1/2 cup carrots chopped 4 cups vegetable broth 3 large sage leaves 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon pink Himalayan salt 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper 1 cup coconut milk 1 tablespoon olive oil or a drizzle of as an optional garnish

Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. On a sheet pan add the butternut squash cubes rinsed in a bit of water. Roast for 25-30 minutes until slightly crispy and browned. Meanwhile chop the other vegetables.

2. Once the butternut squash is done, in a large pot add all the ingredients except for the coconut milk and bring to a boil. As soon as it starts to boil turn the heat down to a simmer and cook covered for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Let it cool slightly then puree it in a blender and add it back to the pot. Stir in the coconut milk and heat on low making sure not to let it boil. Serve with a drizzle of hot sauce or olive oil and garnish with sage and gluten-free croutons (optional).

Oh Beautiful Fall!

My favourite season... I just may have been a squirrel in my before life as I find myself seeking out and storing books for the winter reading like a squirrel with its nuts ha ha! Anyone else?

Our Little Funk Library recently celebrated our 2nd birthday, so I thought I would tell you what being a steward is like for me.

As a steward I dream as if I am a librarian. The smell of books I just love it! It’s so calming and familiar.

I am responsible for maintenance of the library. I sort through donated books and pick what goes into the library. I help guests/community members find certain books they seek and connect with authors and giveaways. Recently I have taken a liking to finding Little Free Libraries in other areas and sharing books with them. I post my adventures on our Facebook page.

Our library hasn’t had many visitors, so if you’re looking for some books (maybe to stock up for winter) please come down or connect with us as we would love to help you find your next reading.

For this month we plan on adding in some spooky and fall themed books.
