Official Heliport Opening at Annual Walk The weather was great this year and it was another good turn out for the annual 4 km Ste. Anne Hospital Health Walk. This year was also the grand opening of the heliport and Stars Air Ambulance was able to kick off the celebration by landing for the first time ever on the brand new pad. Everyone in attendance had the opportunity to take photos with the Stars helicopter. After the walk there was a bbq and draws with the kids enjoying face painting, games, and crafts in the sun. The Waldenway Teddy Health Tent was on site again this year allowing children to bring their special stuffed toys for some TLC from some real medical professionals who assessed, diagnosed and treated the fuzzy patients.

This is a great fundraising event for the Ste. Anne hospital.

New “Chief” of MB Chiefs of Police Our very own Ste. Anne Police Chief is now President of the Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police.

Marc Robichaud was first nominated and then elected to that post in May. The Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police acts as a conduit for providing information and lobbying the provincial government. It is an association of executives within the senior management of policing in Manitoba. Membership is made up of all police agencies across the province.

They work with the Manitoba government at trying to advance best practices in policing. Normally this post is represented by someone from a larger police organization, such as an officer within the upper ranks of Winnipeg City Police or RCMP Chief Robichaud began his career in law enforcement in the late 1980’s, serving as an auxiliary police officer. From auxiliary policeman, Robichaud moved into the role of a regular member in the early 1990’s.

Then, a little over ten years ago, he

accepted the position with The Ste. Anne Police.

In between, his experience is wide, including working with the SWAT Team and undercover work. That eventually progressed into the Behavioural Science Unit with RCMP and then moving into administrative roles. But says being the Police Chief in this small town “it’s the best job I’ve ever had in policing,”

PDC Grads rolled up their sleeves and held a car wash fundraiser at Clearview Co-op here in town on May 25.

Local Hocky Legand Taking Invention to the Top

Guy St. Vincent is the owner and operator of Top Shelf Goaltending at Epic Fitness and Ice here in Ste. Anne. His hockey career as a successful goaltender spans over a decade where he played in four different leagues (Manitoba Junior Hockey League, Canada West Universities Athletic Association, Central Hockey League and Southern Professional Hockey League). He has now turned his sights on his invention called the Blok, a rubber sleeve that slips over a goalie’s stick and sits at the top of the paddle, a couple of inches below where a goalie wraps the index finger of their blocker hand. This creation helps keep the puck away from goalies’ fingers.

He’s now taking the product to the pros. He says two NHL teams — the San Jose Sharks and the St. Louis Blues — are already trying it out and he’s heading to an Austin, Texas trade show next month where he’ll get the chance to showcase the Blok to hundreds of professional equipment managers and athletic trainers.

Pet Adoption Fair at Waldenway The Eastman Pet Adoption Fair held recently, an annual event hosted by Waldenway Canine & Kitty Camp helps animal rescues find fur-ever homes for animals in need.

It’s a family friendly event with face painting, pony rides, dog demonstrations and more. Dozens of Rescues and vendors from Winnipeg and surrounding area welcomed the public.

OFF ROAD VEHICLE The Name Says It All

There is never an occasion where off-road vehicles are permitted on gravel roads, highways, or residential streets. Here is a look at the rules you get from MPI when you register you ORV. • you must not ride on a roadway, you can cross a roadway at or within five metres of an intersection if you hold a valid driver’s licence, other than a learner’s permit, • when intersections are more than three kilometres apart you can cross at any other point along the highway as long as you have a clear view of oncoming traffic • if in a group, only one ORV can cross at a time • before crossing a roadway, you must stop and yield to pedestrians and approaching traffic Roadway shoulders - you cannot ride on the shoulder of a roadway except under all of these conditions: • the ORV you’re riding has more than two wheels and you’re using it for agricultural purposes • the ORV you’re riding is displaying ‘slow moving vehicle’ signs on the rear • you drive 40 km/h or less • you hold a valid driver’s licence, other than a learner’s permit • you drive on the right-side shoulder in the same direction as traffic Medians - you must not ride on or across the median of a divided highway.

Designated Crown land - Crown land is land administered by the provincial and federal governments. Although most Crown land is available for everyone to enjoy, access to some areas is restricted for environmental reasons or public safety concerns. In Crown land areas where ORVs are permissible, please be respectful and responsible. Stay away from crops, gated rangeland, plantations and environmentally-sensitive areas such as beaches, sand dunes, riparian areas and wetlands. For more information on where ORVs are allowed on designated Crown lands, please visit gov.mb.ca/ conservation/off_road_vehicles/designated.
