Annual Walk Successful From All Levels of Support

The rain did not hold back the attendees of the annual Ste. Anne Hospital Health Walk. It was a good turn out for the 4 km trek despite some cooler and soggy conditions.

Kids enjoyed face painting, games, crafts under a tent. New this year was a Teddy Health Tent which allowed children to bring their special stuffed toys for some TLC from some real medical professionals who assessed, diagnosed and treated the fuzzy patients.

STARS was on hand with their Emergency Medical Education Unit and demonstrated CPR on a dummy for the public.

During the Walk, the Ste. Anne Hospital Fund announced the launch of its construction project of a STARS Helipad to be located behind the Ste. Anne Hospital. The cost of the project is approximately $300,000.

To help kick off the fundraiser, the Ste. Anne Lions Club announced a match grant for the sum of $100,000. The Ste. Anne Lions Club worked tirelessly to secure the commitment from Lions Club International Foundation. HyLife came through for the fund and donated $42,250. By the end of the day sponsorships, donations and pledges for the Health Walk brought in a fur-

ther of $31,800. A total of $174,050 has been raised by the end of the walk.

The Ste. Anne Lions Club is currently selling tickets for a BBQ Meat Draw and will continue to fundraise for the Helipad.

The STARS landing area behind the hospital was closed about seven months ago as it did not meet the Transport Canada standards. The new Helipad will be located at the same site but with all of the current standards being met with the necessary concrete and special lighting. The new groundlevel concrete helipad will be operational later this year with construction starting this month and completion by November.

The helicopter currently lands next to the RM of Ste. Anne office at the south end of the community.

Rail Safety Bill Passes The Rail Safety Awareness Week Act, a private member’s bill introduced earlier this spring by Bob Lagassé, MLA for Dawson Trail, is poised to become law after it was recently passed by the Manitoba Legislative Assembly on third reading. Bill 221 will establish an annual Rail Safety Awareness Week in the week of the last Friday in September.

Lagassé believes that educating the public is an effective way of reducing railway-related accidents. “During the awareness week, the Manitoba government would encourage citizens, employers and schools to cooperate with rail companies to implement educational programming on railway safety,” Lagassé stated. “These programs would focus on spotting and avoiding the dangers associated with

rail traffic, especially when it intersects with roads and walkways.”

In Manitoba alone last year, there were 19 railway incidents resulting in three deaths and five serious injuries. “I want to thank everyone who supported this bill, and encourage all Manitobans to help improve railway safety by taking part in Manitoba’s first annual Rail Safety Awareness Week this coming September,” Lagassé added.

Canada already has an annual Rail Safety Week in September, but Bill 221 would make Manitoba the first province to put Rail Safety Awareness Week into law. “Though railways fall under Federal jurisdiction, the province can use educational programs in an effort to reduce injuries and deaths through heightened awareness,” he added.

Randy Brown, the father of 11year-old daughter Kharma Annette Brown was in the audience as Lagassé gained support at the second reading.

The young girl was killed by a train in Ste. Anne while using a crosswalk, was struck and killed by a train in the Ste. Anne area in September 2017.

“As a father, I am deeply saddened by the tragedy and my heart aches for those who loved her,” added Lagassé.

“Those of us with the power to act, to improve things, have a responsibility to do so. I have put this bill forward to prevent such accidents from happening in the future.”

In 2017, there were 222 railway incidents across Canada, including 72 fatalities and 44 serious injuries.

The Rail Safety Awareness Week Act is expected to receive Royal Assent before the legislative session concludes this fall.

Nominations Opening for Town Municipal Council, Election This Fall Thinking of running for town council? The next Municipal General Election takes place October 24.

Prospective municipal election candidates must register with the Senior Election Official (SEO) during the registration period before they may begin to accept contributions, incur expenses, fundraise or borrow money for their campaign.
