Important Land Use Planning for the RM of Ste. Anne The reeve of the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne expects their council will spend a fair amount of time in 2012 planning how land should be used. Art Bergman says there is demand for more residential areas but it’s important to maintain a balance with agriculture. He explains, “We are trying to put the development area(s) into places where we are not going to have conflicts, and where if there are conflicts, they are small ones that we can look after.”

Winter Carnival Postponed

The Ste. Anne Community Development Corporation (CDC) has decided not to host the annual winter carnival this January due to lack of suitable environment.

In previous years it was held in the banquet center and the sports complex, but seems to lack the outdoors festival experience and attendance was low.

The CDC through around ideas to host it in the park at the pavilion but memories of last years -40 weather was quickly mentioned. Other ideas such as holding it in an outdoor tent were also tendered but since the CDC runs on the generosity of the Town, businesses, fundraisers and government grants, tents at a cost of $5,000 or more exceeded the funds available.

The CDC has decided to concentrate on developing the pavilion so it can be suitable for winter events in feature years.

Rick Hanson Relay Runners Chosen Relay runners have been chosen for Ste. Anne’s participation in the Rick Hanson 25th Anniversary Relay event which will take place in Ste. Anne on January 17 and 20th.

The following Medal-Bearers have been selected for Ste. Did You Know?

Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.

To really make scrambled eggs or omelettes rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream; then beat them.

Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.

Coffee is Actually a Fruit… it’s a Cherry.

There are two main types of coffee “beans” – Arabica and Robusta. Robusta plants are grown at low elevation and produce less flavourful coffee beans. However, Arabica plants are grown at high altitudes and produce the best tasting and highest quality coffee beans.

One coffee tree yields only about one pound of roasted coffee each year.

2 cups of sugar 1-1/2 cups canola oil 2 eggs 1/2 cup molasses 4 cups of flour 4 teaspoons of baking soda 3 teaspoons of ground ginger 2 teaspoons of grounded cinnamon 1 teaspoon of salt Additional sugar 2 packages of (10 to 12 oz each) of vanilla or white chocolate chips 1/4 cup of shortening In large bowl, combine sugar and oil. Beat in eggs. Stir in the molasses. Combined the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon and salt. Gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well.

Shape dough into 3/4 inch, Balls and roll in the sugar. Place

2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 350 f for 10-12 mins, or until cookies spring back when touched lightly.

Remove to a wire rack to cool.

In a small saucepan, melt chips with shortening over low heat, stirring until smooth. Dip each cookie halfway into the melted chips: shake off excess.

Place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets until set.

Ste. Anne Curling Club is hosting a Men’s Bonspiel on Jan 6-8 SPMF Monday Night Bingo in Ste. Anne - every Monday at the Seine River Banquet Centre 80 Arena Rd. This is a weekly event to raise funds for Stacey Pchajek Memorial Foundation Inc. The foundation provides scholarships, bursaries and prizes to students graduating grades 8 and 12. One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head.

She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, “Why are some of your hairs white, Mom?” Her mother replied, “Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.”

The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, “Momma, how come ALL of grandma’s hairs are white?”

A Sunday school teacher asked her class, “What was Jesus’ mother’s name? One child answered, “Mary.”

The teacher then asked, “Who knows what Jesus’ father’s name was?”

The “Franken”mammal

The platypus is among nature’s most unlikely animals. In fact, the first scientists to examine a specimen believed they were the victims of a hoax. The animal is best described as a hodgepodge of more familiar species: the duck (bill and webbed feet), beaver (tail), and otter (body and fur). Males are also venomous. They have sharp stingers on the heels of their rear feet and can use them to deliver a strong toxic blow to any foe.

Platypuses hunt underwater, where they swim by paddling with their front webbed feet and steering with their hind feet and beaver-like tail.

Their eyes and ears close with a watertight seal. Swimming blind they rely on their sensitive bill to find food. The bills are equipped with electroreceptors (electronic sense) that pick up on electronic pulses that living things give off.

These Australian mammals are bottom feeders. They scoop up insects and larvae, shellfish, and worms in their bill along with bits of gravel and mud from the bottom. All this material is stored in cheek pouches and, at the surface, mashed for consumption. Platypuses do not have teeth, so the bits of gravel help them to “chew” their meal.

On land, platypuses move a bit more awkwardly. However, the webbing on their feet retracts to expose individual nails and allow the creatures to run. Platypuses use their nails and feet to construct dirt burrows at the water’s edge.

Platypus reproduction is nearly unique. It is one of only two mammals (the echidna is the other) that lay eggs.

Ste Anne Man Receives Recognition Ralph Vincent of Ste. Anne was presented with Manitoba Council on Aging Recognition Awards.

The awards were presented by Healthy Living, Youth and Seniors Minister Jim Rondeau, in acknowledgement of their

extraordinary dedication and commitment to their communities.

Vincent, a member of the Dawson Trail Cloggers and the Young at Heart Community Club, has spent a good part of his life dancing for seniors and providing opportunities for seniors to dance.

Honourable mention certificates were presented to the following local individuals: Julienne Godard, Richer and Juliette Rowan, Richer The Manitoba Council on Aging Recognition Awards were established in 1996 to recognize extraordinary individuals and organizations for their exemplary efforts on behalf of seniors and to pay tribute to the seniors who continue to contribute to their communities. The minister noted these awards foster respect and social inclusion, key aspects of an age-friendly community.

Snow Sculpture Prizes to be Won!!

The Town of Ste-Anne has once again agreed to make the snow blocs for sculptures in our community this year.

They have also offered $150 in prizes which will be split into a first, second and third place.

The Comité Culturel de Ste-Anne will be appointing judges for the snow sculpture competition. Judging will take place on February 5th. Due date for your sculpture is February 1st. To book a block, please contact the Town of Ste-Anne at 422-5293.

The Town of Ste-Anne is also holding their annual Christmas lights competition once again this year.

Ste. Anne Took Part of $35,000 Donation The Manitoba Wild Pink Yonder organization, now armed with fundraising totals in hand, is set to turn over a $34,298.33 cheque to Cancercare Manitoba.

The Manitoba Wild Pink Yonder ride took place this past fall with riders visiting over 20 communities throughout southern Manitoba in a 22 day ride. Communities and riders raised funds to go towards breast cancer research.

“I’m tickled pink with the final figures,” says Manitoba organizer Pam Glover, a Ste. Anne are resident. “There was a lot of planning, a lot of juggling and an amazing response from most of the communities we rode through.”

“I heard tales from people in every community of loss and survival,” says Glover. “These people will definitely remain in my thoughts and heart. This trail ride gave me an opportunity, not only to spearhead fundraising and awareness, but to meet amazing people and kindness from strangers.”

The Town of Ste. Anne was named the “Pinkest” town in Manitoba for its efforts in raising the most money per capita and will now be decorated with signs at their main entry points into the community bestowing them with the 2011 title. They also get to host an event featuring Manitoba band Two Dollar Pistol.

A Little Laugh...

Providing for the Family It had been many years since the embarrassing day when the young woman, with a baby in her arms, entered his butcher shop. She confronted him with the news that the baby was his and asked what he was going to do about it?

After a long discussion, he offered to provide her with free meat until the boy was 16. She agreed.

He had been counting the years off on his calendar. One day the boy who had been collecting the meat each week came into the shop and said, “I’ll be 16 tomorrow.”

“I know,” said the butcher with a smile. “I’ve been counting too.

When you take this parcel of meat home, tell your mother that it is the last free meat she’ll get. Watch the expression on her face.”

When the boy arrived home he told his mother what the butcher had said. She just smiled and said, “Son, go back to the butcher and tell him I have also had free bread, free milk, and free groceries for the last 16 years and watch the expression on HIS face!”

The TELUS tower in Ste. Anne could be turned on as early as this month.

TELUS began building a tower on the south east side of Ste. Anne about a year ago.

TELUS currently has 4G speed offered up to 42 Mb per second competing with MTS and Rogers.

While behind in tower development in Manitoba, TELUS is eyeing to develop coverage similar to their competitors within a couple of years. In addition to the Ste. Anne tower, TELUS has also erected one near Steinbach.
