August 9, 2012 is National Peacekeepers Day. Canadian Forces members have tackled many challenges in the post-war years, achieving much and sacrificing greatly in the cause of peace and freedom. Serving in the army, the navy or the air force both here in Canada and around the world in hundreds of overseas missions, their efforts are a story of courage that has helped Canada earn a solid international reputation.

Province to Name Civic Holiday Terry Fox Day The Manitoba government will introduce a bill in the upcoming fall session that would see the August civic holiday be officially called Terry Fox Day to honour his memory, Premier Greg Selinger announced recently.

"Terry Fox embodied hope, courage, commitment and strength in the face of adversity," said Premier Selinger. "Naming the civic holiday after him is a way for all Manitobans to honour this great Canadian for the hero he was."

The Manitoba government made the decision after a grassroots movement emerged on social media calling for the change.

Fox, a Manitoba native, inspired Canadians across the country with his Marathon of Hope. His dream of running from coast to coast was tragically cut short in Thunder Bay, Ont. but was successful in raising awareness ?about cancer and raising millions of dollars for research.

Today, the Terry Fox Run is held in over 60 countries and has raised over $600 million, making it the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research.

"Terry Fox did so much in the global fight against cancer. He was not only an inspiring individual but a true pioneer," said Premier Selinger. "Now when people are enjoying a holiday with their friends and family, they will remember the amazing man who inspires so many."

A Little Laugh...

A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things.

They decide to go to the doctor for a checkup. The doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.

Later that night while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair.

His wife asks, "Where are you going?"

"To the kitchen," he replies.

"Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?"

"Sure."

"Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?" she asks.

"No, I can remember it."

"Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. You'd better write it down, because you know you'll forget it."

He says, "I can remember that! You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries."

"I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, so you'd better write it down!" she retorts.

Irritated, he says, "I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Leave me alone! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream -- I got it, for goodness sake!" Then he grumbles into the kitchen.

After about 20 minutes the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs.

She stares at the plate for a moment and says...

"Where's my toast?
