Comunity Rocks the Rec Facebook Page Local Ste. Anne Recreational Services Manager Sarah Normandeau has found a way to bring recreational opportunities to the public in a virtual way. She created a Facebook group called “Rock the Rec” in the hope that through isolation recommendations people could still connect. The page has been live not a week and it’s almost at 600 members strong. Once other recreational professionals heard about this initiative they wanted to jump on board with their own albums on the page to start creating virtual recreational opportunities along with Sarah. Chef Cam is creating virtual kids in the kitchen fun, Fraser Reptiles also has an album, as well as the local gym, Epic Fitness. Epic has joined Sarah and is bringing fitness to the home in a virtual way with challenges and even weekly live workouts. CFEF has also joined in to create a French service for parents that need it. Boss Dance Academy also just joined the page with their own album. They’ll be bringing dance to the group in a virtual way.

DJ Brenton from Summer Bounce has his own album as well. He’s been doing game shows live each evening to entertain in a virtual way as well.

Sarah says there’s more to come.

“Ya, boy the page hasn’t slowed down, and I don’t think it will anytime soon. People love it. The messages I’m getting that kids and families are loving the connectivity

parents that also had a child with this or they themselves grew up with it, or they were a resource teacher that had been working with children diagnosed with dyslexia before this.

Now they’re all connected, and they’re there for each other... it’s so inspiring. The ideas that everyone are engaging in, and posting are amazing. There is also an album for each school grade in both French and English where older kids are taking videos of reading books to younger kids and putting them in those albums. We also have a virtual talent show album where people can post to, as well a Rock the Rec daily challenge.“ In a time like this, a group like this is so encouraging. I just love how everyone has come together, and in is so encouraging to see all these rec professionals coming together a time like this, we really do have to engage and create some time a community feel on this page. I away from an uncertain time. We’re had one mom who was asking for all in this together and this page ideas on how to help her son who has no boundaries. It has members has dyslexia learn from home. This thread made me cry because it was from all over Canada, USA, Europe, and even Australia. Public health officials are strongly advising all Manitobans, including healthcare providers, to cancel or postpone any non-essential travel. In addition, public health officials are recommending all returning travellers, including those who have travelled within Canada, self-isolate and self-monitor for symptoms for 14 days after returning to Manitoba.

Public health officials also strongly urge anyone who has cold or flu-like symptoms, such as a cough, fever, runny nose, sore throat, weakness or headache, to self-isolate for 14 days.

S ocial distancing is used to intentionally reduce close contact between people to try to stop the progression of community transmission of any virus.

Social distancing strategies for all Manitobans include: - Cancelling or postponing any large-scale events with more than 10 attendees; - Minimizing prolonged (more than 10 minutes), close (less than two metres) contact between other individuals in public; - Avoiding greetings that involve touching such as handshakes; - Disinfecting frequently used surfaces; - Following public health advice related to self-monitoring and self-isolation if you have travelled or have been exposed to someone ill with the virus; - and considering avoiding travel, crowded places and events, especially if you are at higher risk.

Remain within or close to your home communities. This includes limiting travel, even within Manitoba, to essential trips only.

We remind you to protect yourself while out in public. Please wash your hands frequently, and maintain a distance of about 2 metres from others.

Accueil Kateri Centre Inc. The food bank has made a shout out for their current donation needs of canned soups, meats and fish, peanut butter, rice and wholesome cereals.

Donation bins are located at the front of the food bank, at 113 Dawson (a happy yellow bin), on the steps of the Catholic Church, Old No. 12, Ste-Anne Groceries, Burnell’s in Richer, Jolene Chuhai has a bin outside of Ste. Anne at 87 Thurston, Dave and Jen have a green plastic bin at the end of the driveway at 265 Centrale.

Monetary donations are also great because: a) you don’t need to go to the store (social distancing). b) the food bank has more buying power than you do. c) with a donation of $20 or more you get an income tax receipt.

Ingredients 3 cups Raisin Bran cereal 1 cup crispy brown rice cereal 2/3 cup all-natural smooth peanut butter 5 Tbsp pure maple syrup 3 Tbsp dried cherries Directions ½ cup freeze-dried bananas, or 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder for coating, optional 1. Process the raisin bran and brown rice cereals, peanut butter, maple syrup, cherries and 1 tablespoon water in a food processor until the mixture is finely chopped and comes together in a big ball. Roll some into a small ball; if it seems too dry and crumbly, add 1 more tablespoon water.

2. Scoop the mixture into slightly mounded tablespoons, then roll them into smooth balls. (Dampen your hands with a little water to help you roll.)

3. If using the bananas, pulse them in a food processor until finely ground.

Pour them into a small bowl. Roll each truffle in the banana dust until coated. If using the cocoa, pour it into a small bowl, then roll each truffle in it until coated.

4. Store the balls at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Kids Can Make: Healthy Peanut Butter Balls
