Moorhead Lions Annual Bowling Fundraiser

These Barnesville Lions participated in the Moorhead Lions Annual Bowling Fundraiser in March--standing in front, Ken Bauer, back row, Matt Bailey, Jon Yeske, Mike Quiggle. It is a very well run fundraiser which is held Saturday morning, with the bowling ending by noon.

Riverside Celebrate Year End The Lions Club of Riverside ended their club year with an awards ceremony.

The evening started with the recognition of Lion Gordon Nazarko and his being one of the top ten fund raisers in the Pet Valu Dog Walk raiding $440.00 Next they had the bestowing of two life memberships. The first to Lion PDG GĂŠrald Fontaine; the second to Lion Brian Nazarko.

Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowships were given to three members Lion Doris Pambrun, Lion Louise Roy, and Lion Secretary Jan Nazarko.

Two Lions went home as new members of the Melvin Jones Fellowship.

Lion President Bruce Alpers and Lion Gilles Pambrun.

Following the awards presentation there was the installation of the 2019 2020 executive.

Moonlighters Lioness Club Our new Member of the Moonlighters Lioness Club of Thief River Falls is Arlan Hofstad. He helped show a movie called Until Forever (a movie about cancer) at the Relay for Life on June 7, 2019 with President Sherry Sorenson. She has a cousin who played a nurse in the movie.

Sabin Lions Present Dream Catchier Award Recipient of a dream catchier award was Ronald “Ronnie” Fitzgerald the Sabin lions presented the award to his family on June 17th in Sabin at our annual club picnic. Ronnie was a charter member of the club in 1973.

West ST Paul Lions Volunteer Early start as had to be on-site for 6:00 AM Lions Kris Morris and Linda Green learned the day by “trial by water glass”. Lions Julia Doe, Peter Wight and Pat Wight had fun.

Mahnomen County K-9 Project Fundraiser

The Mahnomen-Waubun Area Lions Club provided a meal and beverages at the airport open house as a fundraiser for the Mahnomen County K-9 project. The county has been without a K-9 for many years, and the county board gave the sheriff’s office permission to start raising funds. After expenses, the Mahnomen-Waubun Area Lions Club raised $1,000 towards the K-9 project. Mahnomen-Waubun Area Lions will celebrate charter night on October 30, 2019, at the Waubun Community Center.

Fertile’s Lion of the Year In introducing the Fertile’s Lion of the Year, Norma Erickson called him “our idea guy.”

Mike Slevin on Mentor was selected Lion of the Year by Fertile Lions Club members.

He received a round of applause from Lions members, spouses and guests at the annual picnic June 26 at the Nature Center.

Erickson presented a commemorative clock to Slevin.

He thanked all the Lions members and said he was pleased and humbled with the honor.

“There are so many deserving Lions who should be recognized,” Slevin said.

“Although Lion Mike has only been a member four years, he has made an impact in our club,” Erickson said. “He has made some powerful suggestions as to what our club could do as projects, here in our town of Fertile and has helped with all our projects.”

For example was when a suggestion was made about bird houses and feeders at the Fair Meadow, Slevin jumped on that project. Bird houses were painted and Slevin got a crew together to put up the houses and feeders.

“The first year, all the houses were filled. It is fun for the Assisted Living and nursing home residents to watch the birds,” Erickson said.

“Mike is very passionate about Lionism and wants to make a difference in many ways. He gets involved in all our projects and helps in anyway he can be of service,” Erickson said.

Slevin is involved with the Week End Backpacks and the school supplies projects.

He is a leader and a good Lion to have in our club,” Erickson said.

Slevin is third vice president of the Lions Club.

At the picnic, perfect attendance pins were also presented to local Lions.

Your club can sponsor visually-impaired students in the Lions Clubs International Essay Contest!

The contest is open to students who are considered visually impaired according to their national guidelines, and will be 11, 12 or 13 years of age on November 15, 2019.

Eligible birthdates are November 16, 2005 through November 15, 2008. One grand prize winner will receive an award and US$5,000.

The contest theme is “Journey of Peace.”

• Only a Lions club can sponsor the contest. The contest may be sponsored in a local school or organized, sponsored youth group, or individuals may be sponsored as well.

• Essays must be no longer than 500 words, submitted in English, typewritten in black ink and double spaced.

• Each essay must be submitted with a completed entry form. Essays submitted without completed entry forms will be disqualified.

• Only one entry per student per year, and each entry must be the work of only one student.

• Essay entries cannot have already been published.

• Any essays found to be plagiarized will be disqualified, and the student will be prohibited from entering any future Lions competitions.

DEADLINES November 15, 2019 – Postmark deadline for a club to send one winning essay to the district governor. Note: A participating club should notify its district governor in advance of sending an entry.

December 1, 2019 – Postmark deadline for a club not belonging to a district to send one winning entry directly to Brand & Marketing Strategy at Lions Clubs International.

Barnesville Lions Honour Melvin Jones Recipients Two Very Active Members of the Barnesville Lions are Melvin Jones Recipients Shown L to R are Club President Jack Foster, Melvin Jones Recipients Matt Bailey and Dean Ernst. Both Lion Matt and Lion Dean have been very active and instrumental in helping the Lions to become a “go to” service club in the community. Both members helped pour the cement at Holland Park, assist in the Club’s twice per year cleanup of 8 miles of ditches, assist in annual raffle ticket sales, participate in the club’s annual trap shoot, help with setting up and putting away of the Bingo tables and benches, helped with the assembly of park equipment at the recently completed “Lions Park,” and both have been on the Club’s Board of directors for a number of years. In addition, Lion Dean, a home grown Barnesville resident, has been responsible for purchasing the bikes that the club gives away at the Clay County Fair, and has served as the Club president. Lion Matt grew up in Battle Lake, has sponsored two new members, assists in Bingo at the Fair, and was influenced by his father and grandfather, both active Lions members. His grandfather was actually the District Governor for District 5M-9. These two very worthy Melvin Jones Award recipients continue to exemplify the Lions motto of, “We Serve.”

Happy Neurofibromatosis Donation Reading Lion Mike Quiggle is shown handing a check in the amount of $500.00 to Darcy Barry. Darcy is afflicted with neurofibromatosis and this money will be used to assist people with this disease. A walk was held at Lindenwood Park in Fargo on June 8 and 100% of the funds raised will be donated for both research and assistance for folks with this disease. The Barnesville Lions continue to reflect the Lions motto, “We Serve.”

WILLIAMS’ WANDERINGS AND WONDERINGS

DG Report August 2019 I hope you have all had a chance to enjoy summer. I have been able to enjoy it a little bit at a time. Some of you may have heard that I had a motorcycle accident. I am still recovering and just recently able to walk again without crutches. Dave and I attended the International Convention in Italy. There I attended my last and final DGE training and was sworn in with hundreds of others from around the world. It was a wonderful opportunity but definitely not fun in a wheelchair.

On Saturday July 13th, Jacky and I attended the CanDo Canines Training. It was a great opportunity to hear about one of our great programs in our multiple. Our district has not had a chair for them for some time. Jacky is fired up already off and running with some club visits.

Dave and I attended the first Council Of Governors in St. Cloud on July 20th. Our district was honored to receive 3 member ship trophies for 4th quarter most new members (+77), new charter and plus net membership (17). I was also able to sit in on some Guiding Lion and Global Membership training. The Youth Exchange students treated us to a buffet of their homeland dishes and each took a turn telling about themselves and their home town.

As some look forward to the school year starting, I hope you also think about your club membership. It is a great time to bring in new members to help with the fall activities. One of my goals is for each club to end the year with at least a plus net membership of 3. That would be about 200. I believe together we can accomplish this and so much more.

I’ve started with some of my club visits as well and look forward to the rest soon. Please check the newsletter for an invitation form. Also, look for updates on goals. All of us are needed to achieve more.

I am still struggling with some cabinet position assignments. Please let me know if anyone would be a great asset for our district and like the chance to serve and learn.

Barnesville Lions Purchase Portable Pitching Mound

Lion Jon Pauna is shown handing a check in the amount of $858.90 to Dan Cox to purchase a portable pitching mound for youth baseball teams. Since the mound is portable, it can be used on all fields to include softball fields. Shown are some of the 9 and 12 year olds that will benefit from this purchase. “We Serve,” the Lions Motto, is once again exemplified by the Barnesville Lions.

Official Heliport Opening at Annual Walk

The weather was great this year and It was another good turn out for the annual 4 km walk. This year was also the grand opening of the heliport and Stars Air Ambulance was able to kick off The celebration by landing for the first time ever on the brand new pad. While everyone in attendance watched and had the opportunity to take photos with the stars helicopter. After the walk there was a bbq and draws and the kids enjoyed face painting, games, crafts in the sun and the Walden way Teddy Health Tent was on site again this year to allow children to bring their special stuffed toys for some TLC from some real medical professionals who assessed, diagnosed and treated the fuzzy patients.

The new “Lions Park� received its sign recently. The Barnesville Lions donated $25,000 toward this project and saved the park board an additional $8,000 by constructing the park equipment.

After Winnipeg West Lion's Club held their Þrst Pancake Breakfast at Silver Heights Restaurant on April 14th, with NEW Lion Gayel organizing the event (being the fantastic caterer that she is!) in conjunction with Tony at Silver Heights Restaurant, we were pleased to welcome 4 more new members: Lion Wendy Hodgins, Lion Evelyn Safnuk, Lions Debbie & Dewey Roy! An induction was held May 22, 2019 with DG Bill Myskiw officiating! FEED THEM AND THEY WILL COME!

At our Multiple Convention in Mahnomen we met many new friends and old friends! A fellow new Lion - Lion Phyllis Marek visited our Lion's Foundation of Canada Dog Walk table and after a conversation found out she lived in Winnipeg West area so she requested a transfer into our club!

We welcome Lion Phyllis to the Winnipeg West Lions Club!

We would like to wish Lion Daryl MacIntyre all the best in his move to Nova Scotia and transfer to a new club. They will be getting a great member!

Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides in Winnipeg

A Nudge in the Right Direction Greg was only in his 20s when he learned he had Meniere’s disease, an inner ear disease that causes progressive hearing loss, tinnitus, and, in some cases, vertigo. Over the years, Greg received two cochlear implants to help combat his hearing loss.

Samantha, Greg’s daughter, worried about her father. “She was pretty nervous about me being alone at night, smoke alarms specifically,” Greg says. And he was afraid he would sleep through his alarm, and found himself unable to sleep soundly through the night. So when Samantha suggested her father look into an assistance dog, Greg agreed.

After applying to Can Do Canines, Greg was matched with Hearing Assist Dog Duke. “[Duke] actually came quite a bit quicker than I had anticipated,” Greg says. “Within four, maybe five months.”

For Greg, the most difficult part of the training process has been taking his previous experience training hunting dogs and adjusting his techniques to train with an assistance dog. “[It’s a] completely different beast,” he says.

On a daily basis, Duke alerts Greg to different sounds such as doorbells, the tea pot, alarm clocks, oven timers, and the telephone by gently nudging or pawing him. Of all the tasks Duke performs, Greg firmly believes Duke’s favorite to be waking him up in the morning. “He wakes me every morning.

He either nudges my cheek or he’ll give me a little lick,” he explains.

“My sleep patterns have absolutely changed for the better,” Greg exclaims. Before Duke, Greg would wake up throughout the night and be unable to fall back asleep, resulting in perpetual exhaustion. “I would usually average around 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night before Duke,” he explains.

Thanks to Duke, Greg is able to sleep soundly knowing Duke will rouse him if needed.

Duke has already become an integral part of the Flanagan family, having been included in camping trips, pontoon rides, and grocery store runs. When asked if Duke has made the difference she wanted for her dad, Samantha replies with a firm, “Yes.” The entire family is extremely grateful for the newest addition. “I just want to thank every single person that’s involved in Can Do Canines because what you’re doing matters and is really, really beneficial to people like me. So I just want to say thanks to everyone,” Greg says.

Winner of Annual Lions Potato Days Raffle

The winners were from eight different communities and the winning stubs were drawn by Scotty Buschie, who did not have a ticket in the drawing. The area’s excellent support of this annual fundraiser will allow the Lions Club to continue to fund various projects throughout community.

Preping for Bingo at the Clay County Fair

Every year the Barnesville Lions and Thursday Night Lions sponsor Bingo at the Clay County Fair. However, some preparation is always a prerequisite for this event. Shown getting out the tables and benches for arrangement and cleaning are Lions President Jack Foster, and board members Dean Ernst, Chris Seifert and Mike Quiggle. Bingo is normally a well patronized event. In addition to trying to win a few dollars, attendees also have a place of shade as well as a place to sit and enjoy some fair food.

When Bingo ends, the tables and benches have to be stacked back in very tight quarters until next year’s celebration.

55 Years of Membership Erman Ueland was recognized for 55 years of membership in the Fertile, MN, Lions Club. Membership chairman Norma Erickson presented Ueland with a pin at the Lions annual picnic June 26 at the Agassiz Environmental Learning Center in Fertile.

RIVERSIDE LIONS CELEBRATE CANADA DAY 70th ANNIVERSARY The Lions Club of Riverside combined their Canada Day celebration with their 70th anniversary.

Traditionally they hold a concert for the neighbourhood; this year we added a celebration of our 70th anniversary.

We were entertained by a live band, while the little ones and some of the tenants enjoyed having their faces painted and spinning the wheel for prizes.
