Williams’ Wanderings and Wonderings

DGE Report May 18, 2019 Cabinet meeting I hope you have all had a Happy Easter and are enjoying Spring . I have been able to enjoy it a little bit at a time. When you see this report, Dave and I will have attended the Multiple Convention in Mahnomen. I hope many of you got a chance to meet him. I’m extremely lucky to have a partner in life and LIONS service. He is my biggest fan and supporter. We are looking forward to the DG 2020 journey. He will travel with me when he can. We both work full-time positions that are not “normal 9-5” hours. There may be times that I travel alone or with my close friend and fellow Lion, Jacky Wolfe. I have recently attended my last and final DGE training in March including tours of CanDo Canines, Hearing foundation, Lions Gift of Sight and Diabetes at the U of M. It was amazing and inspiring to see what we as Lions help to accomplish to serve others. Dave was working so I was able to bring Jacky. She enjoyed the tour opportunities and getting to know more Lions. Our DG group filled our committee chairs and elected our Council Chair. Current DGs ended our training with a friendship banquet themed Roaring 20s Italy complete with giving us all “mafia” nicknames. March 23rd, Jacky and I attended the Diabetes Foundation Research Update at the U of M. It was a great opportunity to hear about new research and meet the Doctors and their staff. I am nearly finished with cabinet position assignments. Please let me know if you or anyone would like the chance to serve and learn. I hope that everyone has or will be finished with new officer training. Please contact me if you still need a manual or have questions. Contact PDG Mike Janssen about Canada training. As some look forward to the school year ending, I hope you also think about your club membership. It is a great time to bring in new members to help with the fun summer projects. I am looking forward to the service of being your next District Governor. Let me be of service to each of you. You can contact me at 218-790-3715 or williams. deanne77@gmail.com I will do my best to help or find the answers. Keep Roaring! Lion Deanne Williams, FVDG

Greetings to All in Service It is Easter eve as I write this newsletter article and I hope each of you had a blessed, joyous Easter. Regardless of what we practice, or are a part of, there are important times in the year for whatever we are involved with. As a Christian the high point of the year is the Easter morning resurrection. It is the one morning we truly rejoice. As Lions this coming weekend (by the time you read this, the past weekend) is one of the highlights of the Lions year, the weekend of the Multiple Convention. It is the last opportunity of the Lions year for a large group of Lions to gather before the International Convention. It is a time to meet new Lions and to reunite with friends of old. It is a time to conduct business and to share stories of success. I look forward to the multiple convention as it will be an opportunity for me to meet the remaining four 1VDGE members, of my peer group, that I have not met. As a late joiner of this team, it will be my first opportunity to be with all of them at one time. Your district governor team has been working to put together the team of cabinet members for the coming Lions year. An area where we really need some support is the Global Action Team (GAT). The GAT consists of three areas of support; Leadership, Membership, Service. Leadership is led by a GLT, a Global Leadership Team leader. Membership is directed by a GMT, Global Leadership Team member. Service is overseen by a GST, Global Service Team coordinator. If you or anyone you know has an interest in any of these positions please contact one of your district governor team members or District Coordinator, Lion Jen Spielman, 5m11Jenifer@gmail.com . Additional information can be obtained by visiting GAT of the Resource Center of My LCI or again contact one of your district governor team members. We all know Lions support many great humanitarian causes and projects. I probably shouldn’t be, but I am currently partial to one, serving as a director of MD5M Lions KidSight Foundation. I mention this for two reasons. On April 6, 5M11 conducted the largest KidSight screening event, for the district, to-date. Lions from five different clubs screened 210 children at Kidfest in Moorhead. Twelve children were referred. There is a picture elsewhere in the newsletter showing the volunteers, thank you Lions! The second item is 5M11 will be responsible for staffing the Minnesota State Fair KidSight screening booth on Saturday, August 24. If you have an interest in helping please contact Lion Tamie Rue, tamierue@gmail.com or me, kwrrlf@gmail.com. Thank you for your service as a Lion. May you continue to be of service to those in your communities and those who are less fortunate than us. Yours in Lionism, Lion Kevin Reich Red Lake Falls Lions

Emily Holmes, left, and Aubrey Martinez are shown informing the Barnesville Lions Club about the Barnesville Community Garden. They successfully requested that the club do the cement work for a floating slab and construct a garden shed atop of the slab. The size will be determined at a later date and the extent of the request was for labor only. The Barnesville club assist in these types of requests, and continue to exemplify the Lions motto of “We Serve.”

Lions Gift of Sight Update

This is an update on the non-profit provision for eye donations in the anatomical gifts act supported by the Lions and being discussed at the MN State Capitol. The MN State Senate Health & Human Services Finance Omnibus bill, which contains the amendment concerning for-profit corneal processing and distribution, passed on the Senate floor early Tuesday morning on April 30th. This bill has now been paired with its State House companion bill and both bills have been moved to conference committee. Those bills are HF2414 and SF2452 and in conference committee, five Senators and five Representatives work out the differences in the two bills in order to have one matching bill for approval in both chambers. With the amendment only in the Senate version of the HHS Omnibus bill, the committee will have to agree to include this into the House bill through a discussion and a vote. The five members from each chamber were selected from their respective HHS Policy and Finance committees. The members for the conference committee are: MN State House of Representatives are: Rep. Tina Liebling, Rep. Rena Moran, Rep. Jennifer Schultz, Rep. Laurie Halverson and Rep. Rod Hamilton. MN State Senate are: Sen. Michelle Benson, Sen. Jim Abeler, Sen. Dr. Scott Jensen, Sen. Paul Utke and Sen. John Marty. On the MN House side of things, Rep. Schultz is a co-author of our original House bill. On the MN Senate side, Sen. Abeler and Sen. Jensen are co-authors of our original Senate bill and Sen. Abeler is the author of the current amendment. In addition, both Sen. Benson and Sen. Marty are aware of our amendment and have voiced support of it. While we are pleased that so many conference committee members have been directly or indirectly involved with our legislation, this does not in any way mean there is an easy path to getting this passed. We need every Lion, Lioness, their family and their friends who live in the districts represented by these legislators to call the members of this conference committee. The calls need to be polite, explain who they are and why they are calling. They need to ask the legislator for their support of the amendment regarding the non-profit provision for eye donations in the anatomical gifts act. They also need to ask the committee member to please move this amendment into the House HHS Omnibus bill and to recommend it for passage in both the House and the Senate. Attached are two sheets containing the contact information for the State Representatives and the State Senators in this conference committee. Please share this information with anyone who supports the Lions and Lions Gift of Sight. Let’s keep the altruistic nature of eye donations and keep the commoditization of eye tissue out of Minnesota. Let’s support research as well as transplants, since the cure for so many eye diseases is not a corneal transplant. Only through research will some of our most devastating causes of blindness be eliminated, like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, and age-related macular degeneration. Time is of the essence and we need you to call these legislators now! Can we count on you to help us? Yours in Lionism, Lion Lyle Goff Chair – Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation

Eight miles is the total number picked up in the spring and in the fall by Lions members and they have been doing this for the past ten years. Once again, “We Serve,” is exemplified by this contingent of the world’s largest service club, Lions International.

A Tour of the Stars Facilities

Hello fellow Lions, As most of you may already know, the Lions Clubs in Calgary started the Stars Program – originally called Lions Air Ambulance Service. I had the pleasure of touring their facilities a few weeks ago. I mentioned that I was a Lion in the Winnipeg Beach Club, they immediately offered to provide the Lions with a tour of their facility. Please let me know if you or any member of your Club would be interested in a tour and also let me know if you prefer, day, evening or weekend. I look forward to hearing from you. Barnesville Lions Club Helps out Local Senior Group Shown is the TV and portable stand that the Lions Club purchased and assembled for the Senior Citizens Center. Initially, the Senior Group requested a stand that would have mounted on the wall. However, this portable stand can be used at any location in the facility and is working out very well. If you happen to play Bingo at the Fair or at the Potato Days Celebration or purchase a ticket for a fundraiser from a Lion member, remember that 100% of the money raised is used for projects such as this one. “We Serve,” is the Lions motto, and the Barnesville Club exemplifies this motto.

New Lion is Ready to Roll

“Newly acquired Lion Stands 55 inches tall”

This is a picture of four volunteers working on the Lion float. We were no longer able to use the loaner Lion we had on the float last year so the float committee found and purchased this magnificent Lion. The float is currently being revamped, taking off the Christmas theme. This float is offered for all clubs in Manitoba and NW Ontario to use. More information will be forwarded in the future as to the use of the float. In the pictures are the four volunteers- Don Hardy, Daryl

Mcintyre, Dewey Roy, and Dennis Doerksen- but most important is our newly acquired Lion which stands 55 inches tall. We now have a Lion on the float and the it can be pulled in parades or even be used as a stationary display. The trailer is totally road ready, has tandem axles with good rubber. If you have any questions then please contact Dennis Doerksen dydoerk@mymts.net or Don Hardy donaldwilliam. hardy@shaw.ca.

LIONS Are “On Parade” at the 2019 Red River Exhibition – YOUR Help IS Needed! The Lions Foundation of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario will sponsor a display booth at the Red River Exhibition, Winnipeg for the period Friday, June 14 to Sunday, June 23, 2019. The objectives of the Foundation exhibit are to: a.) Increase donor support b.) Attract new Lions to clubs c.) Rejuvenate collaboration between Lions clubs d.) Raise some money and e.) Bring focus back to the Foundation – TOGETHER IN STRENGTH. In 2018 195,000 people attended the Red River Exhibition. The Lions display will have at least 25 feet frontage. At its center will be the recently refurbished Lions highway-ready parade float for Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. Satellite stations will be placed around the float with information re Foundation programs such as KIDSIGHT, Medical Assistance, Hearing, Eyeglasses Recycling…. Information sheets will be supplied to Lions manning the different stations. The Foundation will sell 50/50 raffle tickets from its exhibit ($2 each

or 3 for $5). The maximum potential prize is $4950. Obviously volunteers from Lions clubs across Manitoba are needed to ensure visitors to the Red River Ex see Lionism in its best light. To that end, can you please contact Don Hardy to volunteer for some shifts at the Exhibition donaldwilliam.hardy@shaw.ca It would be great if your club volunteered to cover one entire day at the exhibit. Volunteers will receive a free gate pass. The only cost a volunteer will incur is a $5 fee for a full day’s parking. Three volunteers per shift are needed. The last shift ends at 9:00 PM. Volunteers are needed for the following shifts:

New Melvin Jones Fellow

The Goodridge Lions Club is proud to honor one of our club members with the Melvin Jones Fellowship. This is recognition of commitment to humanitarian work in the community. This Lion has been a member since 1982. He has served as an officer and on many committees in the club. Maybe his biggest job was running our spring consignment auction all of these years. It is a big job.

This Lion goes beyond the Lions Club to serve his community. He is an active member of the Faith Lutheran Church. He served for many years as supervisor and chairman of Moylan Township. He now serves as commissioner in Marshall County. The Goodridge Lions are proud to present the Melvin Jones Fellowship, which is the Lions Club International Foundation highest honor to Gary Kiesow.
