Soul Satisfying Stories From The Black Gallery World

The very interesting and soul satisfying stories of Black gallerists continue in this, Pigment International’s second issue of the Black Gallery Guide +, and we never tire of learning them. Our cover story is about Bill Hodges Gallery in Chelsea. The New Jersey native’s instinct for what the market was missing has been his north star in the fine art business. Running galleries in New York’s most prestigious neighborhoods, he barged into the main stream and never left. But Hodges’ legacy is ensuring that Black artists are acquired by museums commiserate with what they’ve given to our art history, including works by Norman Lewis featured on our cover.

And the beat goes on at Brooklyn’s Dorsey Fine Art Gallery, where Naima Wood, Lawrence P. Dorsey’s granddaughter, is providing a platform for artists to share their creative process and engage with the community, just as he did. Wood takes her stewardship seriously knowing the giants who have exhibited there, including Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold, Otto Neals and James Denmark. Even the street outside the gallery bears his name, and its clear she plans to make him proud.

We’re debuting this issue just in time for Spring Art Week in the city of Chicago. The Other Art Fair and EXPO Chicago will welcome artists and galleries from across the world including some of the Black owned galleries showcased in our guide. Please patronize them. This issue boasts even more Black gallery listings, and we hope you keep the info coming, because there are lots more stories to be told.

Chelsea-based gallerist Bill Hodges clearly and unequivocally states his greatest challenge. Getting the great Black artists practicing between the 1950s - 1970s into museums. Think Romare Bearden, Augustín Cárdenas, Elizabeth Catlett, Eldzier Cortor, Sam Gilliam, Jacob Lawrence and Norman Lewis. He feels that the museum community has ignored the works of these artists, and none figures more prominently in his mission than Lewis. Hodges’ first exhibition, in 1993, featured the work of Bearden and Lewis. It came about because of his time selling Lewis’ work in partnership with Lewis’ widow, Ouida, beginning in 1991. She was interested in selling Lewis’ work in Japan, and Hodges took on the challenge. Realizing that being a resource within the art community came, in part, from being a reliable presence, representing a stable of artists, he opened his first establishment in ‘gallery row,’ along Manhattan’s 57th Street. Hodges was the only Black owner on the famous stretch, remaining there for 20 years before moving to his current location in Chelsea. He became a private art dealer in 1979 and has been a collector since 1976.

The New Jersey native, and Rutgers grad, majored in history and political science. He also took classes under artist Camille Phillips. “She told me I could get photos from (James) Van Der Zee for $25, and he’d sign them for me, so I went to see him. He lived at 7 Canal St. around the corner from Norman Lewis.” And so began the life of an art collector.

Mindful of his teacher’s budget coming out of school, he found his way to 84th Street and ParkeBernet (PB 84) Auctions. Familiar with Lawrence and Bearden, he also immersed himself in works by white artists, including those by Robert Motherwell, which he could pick up for $50 - $200.

“Selling those lithographs and serigraphs gave me enough money to begin purchasing drawings and watercolors,”

Hodge says, and so began the career of an art broker.

Hodges always had an entrepreneur’s grasp of what the market would bear. “I’d have an idea and then research it to see what gaps in the market needed to

6
6 BGG+ Layout 2024.indd 6 4/8/24 8:56 AM

be filled,” he offers. “This was the approach I took in selling Norman Lewis. Here was a great artist who, very early on, was doing abstraction. So why was he not collected by museums?”

Hodges calls Lewis a genius in his catalog Norman Lewis: Shades of Blackness (8 November 2021 – 29 January 2022), Hodges says, “You have to absorb the painter’s work over time and read the work.” His epiphany of the strength and power of a Lewis work came with Journey to An End. He’d viewed the work many times, but in this instance, he was looking down onto the painting and saw it was a man being chased by shapes of white hooded figures; it was clear he had been set on fire. Hodge committed to acquiring and promoting the artist’s works, a mission he continues today.

Hodges’ legacy is the work of the icons he has placed in museums, providing works for shows, as he did for Procession: The Art of Norman Lewis (September 17, 2016 – January 8, 2017) at the Chicago Cultural Center and the many credits for

work he has garnered in prestigious auction catalogs including Swann Auction Galleries.

Hodges stresses that the artists working today stand on the shoulders of these giants just as Bearden, Lawrence, and Lewis stood on Robert Duncanson’s shoulders.

“For the most part they stuck together, watched out for, and assisted each other, because the struggle was real,”

And that’s why he continues his crusade, a selfstyled, cogent, Don Quixote on a righteous quest on behalf of Black artists.

Agroundbreaking moment in the art world approaches as a delegation of women of color from Chicago prepares to shine during the Venice Biennale at the European Cultural Center’s (ECC) “Personal Structures” exhibition opening in April 2024.

Contemporary metal point artist D. Lammie-Hanson will showcase her works that marry the aesthetics of a century’s old technique, with her contemporary artistic vision. Hanson, represented by Martha’s Vineyard’s Knowhere Art Gallery, joins 18 female artists from Chicago’s Women’s LIVE Art Studio (WLAS), in presenting their work at the esteemed Palazzo Bembo during the Biennale. This historic gathering marks the first time such a large contingent of female artists from Chicago will exhibit together on this prestigious international platform. Hanson and WLAS will be showing work in two separate sections of the Personal Structures’ exhibition which has as its 2024 theme Beyond Boundaries.

Jennifer Warren, Kristen Williams, Kudzai Mutasa, Lois Stone, Marissa Kendrick, Minnie Watkins, Natalia Virafuentes, Reisha Williams, and Rhonda Gray.

Additionally, Chicago-based Pigment International® is a media partner to the ECC. Pigment International is a Black woman-led, multi-media art platform and magazine publisher working to amplify the voices of artists of color. Pigment International produced a special edition of their magazine profiling the award winning exhibition The Afro-Futurist Manifesto: Blackness Reimagined mounted by Galerie Myrtis for the ECC in 2022.

This collective effort stands as a testament to the rich diversity and creative prowess of Chicago’s artistic community, showcasing the city’s depth of talent and cultural significance on the global stage.

The WLAS collective artists exhibiting are Martha Wade, Dana Todd Pope, Candace Hunter, Dani Galleri, Gretchen Jankowski, Hyero, Jaudat Rahmani, Jennifer Hodges, Jennifer Turner,

The European Cultural Centre (ECC) presents its 7th edition of the “Personal Structures” under the theme Beyond Boundaries, April 20th - November 27th, 2024.

When you enter Dorsey’s Fine Art Gallery, if you look up just a bit above the doorway, there is a wooden sculpture perched on the wall partition. Lawrence P. Dorsey bought it on one of his trips to Africa, and when he opened his eponymous galley in 1970, he placed it there. His granddaughter, Naima Wood, says it is there to provide good energy and protection for the gallery.

One of New York City’s oldest independently Black-owned art galleries, it is nestled in the heart of Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood. The intimate gallery offers art enthusiasts a place to explore and appreciate a wide range of artistic styles and mediums by both seasoned and emerging artists of the African Diaspora.

Dorsey was a passionate art collector and curator with a keen eye for talent. His vision for the gallery was to create a space where artists could exhibit their work in a supportive and welcoming environment. Under his stewardship, the former frame shop became a beloved gathering spot for artists of the era, including Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold, Otto Neals and James Denmark. Dorsey was dubbed “The High Priest of Arts” for his respected commitment to promoting Black art and Black artists. A bust of Dorsey by Neals, attesting to his revered status, holds pride of place in the gallery.

Dorsey’s legacy continues through Wood who grew up in the gallery and was mentored by her iconic elder. Today, the second generation legacy holder curates shows that reflect current trends in contemporary Black Art. Warm and engaging, she steadfastly maintains the gallery’s revered reputation of being a community hub for Black art presentation, education, and celebration. After all, the street is named in her grandfather’s honor - Lawrence P. Dorsey Way.

Upon her grandfather’s passing in Oct 2007, a group of artists and art collectors began managing the gallery. Sculptor Neals was among them, and for fifteen years, they continued to host exhibitions, art workshops, and manage the annual holiday art auction benefit. Woods assumed management of the gallery in August of 2022, spending months developing the new vision and renovating the space.

Otto Neals: Watercolors was the first exhibition the newly minted gallerist curated after the renovation process.

“It helped lay the foundation for the type of exhibitions the community could expect to see in the gallery,”

she said. At 93, Neals still serves as an art advisor and continues to support Wood as she navigates her new role.

In addition to its exhibitions, Dorsey’s Fine Art Gallery also hosts various events and artist talks, providing a platform for artists to share their creative process and engage with the community. With its thoughtfully curated exhibitions and welcoming atmosphere, this gallery offers a unique and memorable experience for all who appreciate the beauty and power of Black art.

The gallery is located at 553 Rogers Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11225

Dontae Muse, also known as D. Muse, is an ‘artrepeneur coach’ dedicated to empowering artists to monetize their talents through proven branding and marketing strategies.

He has been the driving force behind Above Art Studios in New Brunswick, New Jersey, for eight years, where he serves as an artist, author, arts administrator, and creative coach.

Inspired by a childhood incident where his creative abilities were misunderstood, Dontae recognized the importance of understanding the business aspects of art. Witnessing the undervaluation and exploitation of Black artists, he aimed to break the cycle of the ‘starving artist’ by providing essential business knowledge.

With a background in business and art administration, Dontae established Above The Art Studio with his business partners,

realizing his dream of owning an art gallery despite challenges. He also founded “The Pay The Artists Club,” a virtual coaching community offering insights into copywriting, pricing, and funding for artists worldwide, emphasizing community support in the art world’s intricacies.

Dontae’s upcoming Black Gallery Art Tour, starting April 11, 2024, will showcase Black artistry at various galleries across the nation, starting in Bowie, MD, and ending in New York, promising a celebration of cultural diversity and artistic excellence.
