OVERVIEW Black Fine Art Month (BFAM), is an opportunity to commemorate and elevate these contributions through art programming. The celebration, which was entered into the Congressional Record on October 4, 2019 by Illinois Congresswoman Robin Kelly, lies at the intersection of the past, present, and future of Black Art, and affords us a moment to toast the collectors, bold gallerists and esteemed art purveyors who revere the aesthetic, drive the value; and invest in artists
who are making a cultural impact. Black Fine Art Month is an initiative of Pigment International™. Pigment International is proud to continue its partnership with the DuSable Museum of African American History, a Smithsonian affiliate, for the 2020 celebration. Additionally, Pigment International has assembled a nationwide committee to conduct a month-long, virtual celebration beginning October 1.

A Woman’s Work: CELEBRATING THE BLACK WOMAN ARTIST Each Thursday during October, Pigment International™ will host a Salon Talk exploring the Black art aesthetic with a focus on Black women and the current demands for racial justice. The virtual events will be streamed live, and on social media, beginning with a kick-off event on Thursday, October 1, 2020. We will also release the second edition of Pigment Magazine, an Ozzie Award Finalist for “Best New Magazine Design,” which will focus on Black women artists and how Black artists are interpreting these astounding shifts in racial relationships around the world. Works by world-renowned Black artists including Deborah Roberts, Charly Palmer, and Dawoud Bey will be featured in the new issue.

Join us for a conversation on intergenerational making and meaning with the printmaking artists of the Houston-based ROUX Artist Collective. Together, the artists of ROUX examine cultural and societal issues of genealogy, feminism, identity, & other topics affecting women of the African Diaspora.
Artist David Driscoll said that we will be defined by our culture more than any inventions we might create, and as such we must document the work of Black artists. In 1976 artist Samella Lewis created Black Art: An International Quarterly, now the International Review of African American Art. It was among the first journals, created by Blacks documenting African American Art. This panel will explore the importance of scholarly documentation of the work of Black artists and the Black art canon. Our panelist will discuss how we are documenting, critiquing and recording the work created across the diaspora today.

BLACK ART AND THE SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVEMENT
PRODUCED BY Ted Ellis, Texas This panel will explore how the racial reckoning playing out in society, ignited by the death of George Floyd, also highlights issues of diversity and inclusion in the art world. Open letters have been sent to arts institutions across the country highlighting the decades-long culture of racism within the American art world. The panel will discuss issues of inclusion, division, lack of scholarship and how work by Black artist has been siloed within the art world. This panel of artists, galley owners and educators will offer their take on how to change this trajectory.

The Black owned art gallery is a Balm in Gilead for Black artists and collectors. While historically overlooked in the larger art world, the Black gallerist has provided us a place to, not just buy art, but a place to be educated about Black art and artists, connect to artists and in the case of at least one gallery receive free gifts of art. According to a recent article in the New York Times “there is only one African-American gallerist in the 176-member Art Dealers Association of America, a professional group.” Yet because of a dedicated client base the Black gallery continues to grow and thrive and serve as a pivotal connection point in communities across the country. This conversation with gallerist will offer insight into their triumphs and challenges.
Begins at 3:30 pm CT How are artists pivoting their practices in the time of COVID-19 and racial unrest? Many artists have found new outlets for sharing their work with the public and increasing their visibility, others have been challenged to move forward.
