Esther Short one of the earliest settlers in the area donated the land in 1853, thereby establishing the Pacific Northwest’s first public park. Her vision for the park was to create a space where all city residents could enjoy the beauty and opportunity of downtown Vancouver.
In the early 1900s, Mayor Royce Pollard started a massive restoration of the park and the city, and private donors have continued to invest and build the park to what it is today.
In addition to the popular weekend Farmer’s Market, there is a constant stream of public events, concerts, street musicians, gatherings, public speaking, and an ever active playground for youth.
It is also a place to simply sit and enjoy the pulse of the city and listen to the lovely glockenspiel chiming from the Salmon Run Bell Tower.
