The Foundation’s annual Vintage Car & Boat Festival each June (June 22-24, 2017) is a major fundraiser for the organization and is attended by thousands who get a glimpse into one-of-kind classic vintage automobiles and boats. The Baynanza Dinner and Auction, also that same weekend in June, is another way for the Foundation to raise funds “to continue to pursue our mission and care for our neighbors and our community,” said Candace Fitzsimons, the Foundation’s Executive Director. Local residents and visitors have further benefited from almost a mile of public parks at each end of the community, East and West Parks. Bay Harbor has also had a considerable impact on providing local jobs; thousands of trades and service workers over the past 20 years have supported themselves and their families based on the steady success of Bay Harbor. Additionally, Bay Harbor’s residents and businesses contribute hundreds of millions in taxes to Michigan’s economy each year, he added. “Bay Harbor’s strength is that it has weathered economic cycles and is truly a generational family community for the ages,” Johnson said. “As Chairman of Bay Harbor Company, it has consistently been my and our company’s goal to maximize real estate values.” THE ENTIRE BAY HARBOR COMMUNITY PLANS FOR A 2018 GRAND OPENING SUMMER The Grand Opening of the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in July of 2018 is a big catalyst behind the efforts to shift The Village into more of an “eatertainment” district that includes something for everyone (see related story on the Great Lakes Center for the Arts). The next phase of Bay Harbor is happening now. Leading the reinvention efforts are several groups that have come together with plenty of enthusiasm and passion for seeing it come to fruition; most of these members are volunteers committed to ensuring the success of Bay Harbor for generations to come. The Bay Harbor Marketing Alliance is the umbrella organization coordinating the efforts utilizing Bay Harbor’s numerous entities and real estate. The community is following the nationally proven Main Street Program for re-envisioning downtowns. Heidi Geiger, a Bay Harbor resident, has been leading the Main Street initiative as facilitator at regular meetings that have brought together a large group of residents, business leaders and community stakeholders to map out the future vision for the Village at Bay Harbor. “The Main Street Approach was such a great way for us to organize and prioritize the great assets and ideas for the re-envisioning of Bay Harbor’s Village,” Geiger said. “We know the community will join us to experience the new Village at Bay Harbor reveal in May 2018 – just a year away, and in time for the Great Lakes Center for the Arts’ premiere season.” The Upper Village plans are new to the conversation. Near the Bay Harbor entrance, two sections of land are being prepped to attract service and retail, including the possibility of bike rentals at the key location along the famed Little Traverse Wheelway. Eleven new luxury lakeview home sites are also in development near the Bay Harbor entrance. Added Brya: “It is an exciting time

to be involved with Bay Harbor, but really, that has always been the case. Communities naturally evolve and change with the generations. and social hub for Northern Michigan, the Center will feature year-round, compelling performances with virtually limitless possibilities to inspire, entertain, and educate through the performing arts,” said Executive Director Jill O’Neill. “The historic stone building where the Little Traverse Wheelway meets the Northwestern State Trail on M-119 is the perfect place to provide education, trail maps, safety information and other benefits to the public,” said former Trails Council board president, Steve Biggs. “The Ultimate Trailhead would function like a trails chamber of commerce,” said Biggs. “From this location, the Trails Council will be able to plan, execute and evaluate programs to help communities become ‘trail towns’ and realize the greatest economic impact from the trails. In addition, we will preserve a beautiful historic building and almost an acre of green space along the Little Traverse Wheelway.” The Trails Council presented their concept to the Petoskey Noon Rotary Club as a respected partner to collaborate with them on this project through their annual fund raising event, Diamonds and Denim in September of 2015. The Rotary Club of Petoskey was responsible for turning a previous "no vote" to a "yes vote" for the athletic complex as people went from opposing a millage request to a large margin of support for the millage necessary to build and update the structure. Whereas


a vote was necessary from Petoskey only to support the athletic complex, numerous trails are located throughout Northern Michigan, which will support the trails project through the revenue bicyclists bring to businesses along the routes. Diamonds & Denim 2015 was a grand success and exceeded initial monetary projections by raising over $55,000 with an additional $25,000 grant from the Rotary Park Fund to the Trails Council. On top of that, a gift of $130,000 from the Offield Family Foundation of Harbor Springs to the Trails Council has brought the Ultimate Trailhead facility to reality.

HISTORY The Top of Michigan Trails Council was formed in 1995. Prior to the creation of the Trails Council, the Little Traverse Wheelway Committee worked for over 30 years to develop a trail for non-motorized use around Little Traverse Bay from Harbor Springs to Charlevoix. The Trails Council has helped develop over 200 miles of trails around Northern Michigan. One of the more popular routes, the Little Traverse Wheelway connects multiple bike trails

from Charlevoix to Petoskey to Harbor Springs. This turn-of-the-century former railway, stretching more than 26 miles along the bay between Charlevoix and Harbor Springs, now serves as one of the region’s most scenic non-motorized trails. The wide, curvy, paved pathway makes it especially friendly for families and large riding groups. The “East Segment,” primarily located in Petoskey, is a stunning section; start at the Little Traverse History Museum, and continue northeast along Bayfront Park and then through the gorgeous, meandering streets of the historic Victorian-era community of the Bay View Association. One of the early supporters of the Trails Council has a modern day connection to both Bay View and Petoskey Rotary. Horace “Huffy” Huffman, whose daughter, Lisa Loyd is married to Ric Loyd, are both life-long members of Bay View, with Ric also being a member of the Petoskey Noon Rotary Club. Huffman, the retired Chairman of Huffy Corporation of Dayton, Ohio, had been involved in a successful Miami Valley Regional Bicycle Council. Beginning in 1994 Huffman and Tom Bailey (both of the Little Traverse Conservancy) championed the concept and coordination of numerous


trail user groups in Emmet, Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties. According to the history of the Trails Council, Huffman and Bailey recognized a lack of overall coordination, direction and planning of recreational trail activity in Northern Michigan to meet the demands of an expanding population and the rapid growth of tourism to the area. Huffman and Bailey pre-determined in their minds what the mission of the evolving organization should be: “To facilitate the establishment of a multi-use, year ’round, safe recreational trail system in Charlevoix, Cheboygan and Emmet counties.”

ADVOCACY AND INFRASTRUCTURE INTERSECT Most statewide advocacy groups also host major bicycling events that help them raise both funds and awareness about bicycling in Michigan. The Michigan Trails and Greenway Alliance’s Michigander ride draws more than 750 participants, and generates more than $50,000 in net revenue for the organization. The advocacy community’s involvement in coordinating events has helped them better understand how communities are embracing bicycling. Most stakeholders expressed the sense that more communities are embracing bicycle events and the idea that they bring an infusion of money into a community. As Rich Moeller, the Executive Director of the League of Michigan Bicyclists, said: “Communities are glad that we are there; they thank us for bringing our tour through. We had to re-route the ride this year and had one local business that moved their tent to another community to capture the

sales. There are little stories like that where business owners are going the extra mile to capture impact from rides and tours.”

BICYCLING A BOOM FOR MICHIGAN Based on surveying conducted by BBC Research and Consulting of Denver, Colorado, for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), four percent of Michigan residents participated in a bicycle related event or vacation during the past year and about half of those who participated in events reported participating in more than two events. Respondents who participated in bicycle-related events and vacations were asked to estimate their expenses for food, travel and other expenses. The total benefits calculated for the state of Michigan is approximately $668 million including: • Household retail spending on bicycling $175 million • Manufacturing $11 million • Avoided health care costs $256 million • Reduced absenteeism $187 million

And when it comes to infrastructure, placemaking and policy, many cities and communities have made substantial investments in bicycle infrastructure in recent years. In Detroit, the Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative has completed six miles of a nine-mile path called the Conner Creek Greenway. The City of Grand Rapids has a goal of completing 100 miles of bicycle lanes by 2015. Bicycle infrastructure development has been linked closely with the complete streets and placemaking movements and is seen by many officials and stakeholders as a tool for economic development. This dynamic combination of infrastructure, tourism potential and recent shifts in policy means Michigan has an opportunity to become one of the most bicycle-friendly states in the nation. The Project for Public Spaces, a nonprofit working to build stronger communities, says placemaking is “both an overarching idea and hands-on tool for improving a neighborhood, city or region. Michigan is the number one state for rail trails – we have so many a state, it is time to grab on to the bicycle as a way to re-brand ourselves.” Sounds like it’s a grand time to jump on your bike and go for a ride.
