Mission

Pathways to Aviation provides solutions to the aviation industry’s growing workforce needs by informing, inspiring, and engaging its future labor force.

Overview

In 2014, recognizing greater needs within the aviation industry, the organization's board of trustees established a refreshed purpose: educational curriculum and workforce development. From that point forward, the organization built collaborative relationships to design aviation-focused STEM education curriculum, forge relationships with aviation businesses and membership associations, assist with aviation heritage efforts, educate students about aviation, create fresh and appealing career-related initiatives, and award student scholarships. Pathways to Aviation and its programs, particularly the aviation curriculum and workforce development efforts have received support and endorsement from the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development, Nevada Governor’s Workforce Investment Board (Aerospace & Defense Sector Council), Nevada Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation, Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, Truckee Tahoe Airport Authority, Carson Airport, Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada, State of Nevada Department of Education, Washoe County School District, Truckee Tahoe Unified School District, University of Nevada, Truckee Meadows Community College, Sierra College, Nevada Business Aviation Association, and many aviation industry leaders. Our career planning and mentoring was launched in January 2017 to eight students. At the end of the third year, the program impacted 204 students. Now, in year four, the program has expanded to provide greater resources to allow for an increasing number of students, preparing them as best as possible for rewarding careers, making them more appealing to employment recruiters. www.PathwaysToAviation.org

Vision

Pathways to Aviation addresses workforce shortages and enhances economic development, which significantly impacts the aviation industry. The paths taken to pursue the vision are through the following deliverables:  Empowering a new generation of aviation experts and leaders.  Filling jobs with quality labor.  Awarding scholarships to students attending four-year, two-year, and specialty instruction.  Spearheading a vibrant aviation community, fostering informative outreach, new and mutually-benefit collaborations, and workforce connections and pursuits.  Fostering 100% of hiring from local and nearby locations.  Generating aviation outreach and industry buy-in.  Demonstrating measurable ROI on sponsorship and charitable investments.  Pursuing aviation education in high schools.  Developing collaborative relationships to benefit both those seeking aviation careers and the organizations seeking quality talent.  Forging new territory in aviation, aerospace, and unmanned aerial systems.  Serving as a strong voice and source of aviation workforce solutions. We believe there’s a large pool of skilled talent in local communities, represented by students who may thrive in the aviation industry. The program identifies interested students and builds pathways to guide them toward continued education and/or direct workforce employment. This unique, yet structured career and mentoring program provides career readiness tools, best practices, and mentors, thus elevating their chances of pursuing their educational and career goals.

Welcome to Futures in Aerospace Pathways to Aviation is on a mission to prevent aerospace workforce shortages from adversely impacting local communities. The career planning workshops, also called Flight Plans, are designed to prepare students for rewarding and fulfilling careers. While our industry focus is aerospace, the workshops provide extreme value to all young people who wish to succeed in any industry. You’re encouraged to utilize this workbook to your greatest potential. It contains information pertinent to the workshops and networking receptions, and provides valuable resources and coaching tips. Bring it to every workshop, take it to school, and keep it handy to write notes, capture names of references and professional contacts, and jot ideas. Pathways to Aviation is excited to have you onboard for this amazing journey!

www.PathwaysToAviation.org

What it’s all about We developed an exciting initiative to connect students to the aviation industry, its high-level executives, and college and career opportunities. Students obtain an understanding of their hard and soft skills, articulate those skills on their resumes, share the skills and passions through face-to-face interactions, and develop strong relationships with aviation leaders. The Futures in Aerospace initiative, which runs from January to May 2020, features workshops in three locations, culminating with industry networking receptions in Reno, Carson, and Truckee. The career development based workshops feature presentations by aviation executives, who share their experiences, descriptions of their company specialties, overviews of hiring practices, and career-focused advice. In addition to the presentations, students receive career planning best practices, such as skills identification, resume writing, interviewing tips, and networking instruction. The goal is for students to be well-prepared to meet aviation executives and recruiters at the large networking reception, with resumes in hand, creating strong first impressions, conducting meaningful dialogues, and taking strategic next steps. If all goes well for the students, they’ll leave with job shadowing, internship, and part and full-time employment commitments.

The workshop locations are strategically placed, as follows: 1. Reno, Nevada 2. Truckee, California 3. Carson City, Nevada All workshops take place at local airports, allowing students to tour facilities and become familiar with the respective surroundings and primary leaders. Each workshop series culminates with a large professional-to-student networking reception during Aviation Career Week, May 11-15, 2020.

Career Plan Each person has a different career journey. And, while it’s not required to follow a specific path to securing your first real job and each subsequent job, creating a plan elevates your chances of success. The following are areas to consider incorporating into your career plan.  Identifying your career interests.  Creating lists of your hard and soft skills.  Assessing your strengths and characteristics.  Identifying each of your past and current jobs, volunteer activities, and membership organizations.  Utilizing appealing key action verbs to describe the tasks and achievements associated with your experiences.  Providing specific and relatable experience descriptions of your experiences.  Crafting your resume, featuring your strengths, skills, experiences, and education.  Presenting your resume for review and accepting constructive feedback.  Creating a LinkedIn account to showcase the information on your resume and elaborating on your interests and experiences.  Understanding the messages shared through posture, body language, and facial expressions.  Conducting an assessment of your online presence, particularly messages shared through emails and social media.  Verbalizing your interests, skills, experiences, and goals through a brief (30-45 second) pitch.  Practice your elevator pitch in front of others or sharing through video; and, accepting constructive feedback.  Meeting industry executives, community leaders, and professionals and sharing your career interests, experiences, and goals.  Articulating your skills, experiences, and interests in interviews.

Career Interests

Searching for Jobs The most successful job and internship seekers use a variety of job searching paths. They start the process early, focus their pursuits, and develop plans. Here are ways to find great jobs. Online searching Niche job boards, such as the one on the Pathways to Aviation website (powered by JSfirm.com), are maintained by professional associations, recruiting companies, and local business agencies. These are valuable because they feature positions aligning with career interests and geographical locations. Megasites can be helpful as clearinghouses for jobs of all types. Glassdoor, Monster, Indeed, CareerBuilder are sites widely used by job-seekers. It’s good to visit these websites frequently, since opportunities are added daily. Before you impulsively apply for positions, be sure to ask about our sure-fire tip. Source Employers Research potential employers to target and pursue jobs. You’re encouraged to develop a comprehensive list of all potential employers and record notes for each. Start with contact information, available jobs, locations, and your personal impressions. Mobilize your Network Networking is the most valuable strategy in finding employment opportunities. Establishing genuine relationships should be a continual process you utilize from this point forward. Similar to the list employers list, be sure to track all relationships you create. Use an excel file and your LinkedIn account to track and maintain communication with each person.

Skills Identification During the job search process, employers look for applicants with two types of skills: hard skills and soft skills. Hard Skills Hard skills are teachable abilities or skill sets that are easy to quantify. Typically, you'll learn hard skills in the classroom, through books or other training materials, or on the job. Hard skills tend to be the main point of differentiation between job candidates. However, proficiency in technical skills does not guarantee long-term success. Examples of hard skills include: Foreign language Degree or certificate Machine operation Computer programming Soft Skills Soft skills are subjective skills that are much harder to quantify. They relate to the way you relate to and interact with other people. Soft skills are important because they enable students to become better candidates for upward mobility and managerial roles when they’re in the workplace. Instead of only focusing on the first job out of school, soft skill development is aimed at achieving and maintaining longterm career success. Examples of soft skills include: Communication Flexibility Leadership Work Ethic Which skills are more important? While certain hard skills are necessary for any position, employers look for job applicants with particular soft skills. This is because, while it is easy for an employer to train a new employee in a particular hard skill, it is much more difficult to train an employee in a soft skill. You want to make sure potential employers are aware of your skills throughout the job recruitment process. This means highlighting your hard and soft skills in your conversations, on your resume and cover letter, elevator pitch, networking activities, and job interviews.

Assessing Your Strengths We’re excited to add a new feature to the Futures in Aerospace program, because it provides extreme value to students. Not only does it help students recognize their greatest skills, it can help employers glean a greater understanding of you. Students are invited to participate in the CliftonStrengths assessment. The CliftonStrengths assessment identifies an individual’s most- and least-natural talent themes, or categories of talents, which are recurring and consistent patterns of thought, feeling or behavior. Assessment results provide a list of 34 distinct themes, placing the most dominant themes at the top. Respondents also receive detailed information about each theme and developmental suggestions to help the individual turn their talents into strengths. Results of the CliftonStrengths assessment helps students • Identify personal traits and talents • Improve self-awareness • Deepen engagement in school, at work, and in the community • Chart targeted career paths

Completing the Assessment It’s not required that students participate in the CliftonStrenths assessment. It’s offered, at no cost, as an opportunity for students to glean a greater understanding of themselves. The results of the assessment may provide considerable value when determining career interests and goals. Students attending workshops are invited to participate in the CliftonStrengths assessment.

Resume Writing The typical employer initially spends about 15 seconds reviewing each resume. If you want to create an outstanding resume, you need to capture the reader's attention as quickly as possible. One key tip is to put yourself in the shoes of the reviewer and ask, “what type of person and skills do we need for this position.” The best way to answer this is to have a thorough understanding of the employer, its needs, and the responsibilities of the position. As you’re building your resume, consider the following tips. Place everything on one page Keep the format simple Make sure the information is recent and relevant Don’t list your soft skills Organize your work experience in reverse chronological order Use descriptive action keywords when describing your experience Include extra-curricular work, such as volunteerism Avoid unnecessary vague terms, such as hard worker, team player, enthusiastic, people person, etc. List relevant hard skills, licenses, and certifications Proofread multiple times Regularly update with the latest information Tailor each resume for each job you’re applying Recruiters look at hundreds of resumes to find the ones they feel give the employer the best fits for the position. They’re selecting those they believe will most successfully carry out the tasks and responsibilities for that particular position. As such, your mindset should not be to simply inform the reviewer, yet to sell and showcase your skills, experience, and accomplishments.

Cover Letters A cover letter is an original statement that introduces you by highlighting your interests, education, and experience as they apply to a particular employer and its available position. The personalized cover letter and resume form a package designed to get you to the next stage: the job interview. While your resume should be tailored to the job which you are applying, the cover letter is your best chance to connect the dots for the employer. A successful cover letter should follow the standard business letter format and is one page with three to five paragraphs. It can be structured using a few basic principles: • The first paragraph can make reference to a specific position or an inquiry about possible positions in a particular field. If applicable, you can mention who referred you to the organization. Also mention why you are interested in that company. • The second paragraph relates your interests and background to the specific activities and needs of the employer. Be specific in stating how your background meets their needs. It is imperative that you name your top skills and back them up with examples and experiences. The letter should convey that you know something about the organization, that you are excited about exploring the possibility of working with them, and that you feel you have the potential for making a valuable contribution. • The final paragraph requests the opportunity for an interview or mentions that you will call on a specific date and that you hope to discuss your background and interests at that time. Close with an expression of appreciation. As the cover letter is the employer’s first glimpse at you as a candidate, it must be organized, professional, and 100% error-free. When you spend time crafting a customized letter, you will stand out from the pool of applicants.

First Impressions It’s widely known that three to five seconds is the length of time you have to make a strong first impression. The first encounter you have with someone, whether it’s planned or random, can lead to a long term association with the right first impression. Studies show that when you meet someone face-to-face, 93 percent of how you are judged is based on non-verbal data, while only 7 percent is influenced by spoken words. When it comes to making a strong first impression, consider these simple tips. Image is everything Dress for success Be professional Scope the environment and audience Put your phone away Maintain good body language Greet with confidence Firm handshake, solid eye contact Repeat the other person’s name Speak up Choose your words wisely Listen intently Place the other person as the center of attention Show a sincere interest The impact of a first impression can be seen through a domino effect of future meetings, opportunities and, quite possibly, employment. Making a good first impression is extremely important, every time, no matter the occasion, setting, or circumstance. Much of what you need to do to make a good impression is common sense. By incorporating these tips, you’ll be more prepared and value the importance of every random or planned encounter, thus leading to great possibilities. www.PathwaysToAviation.org

Online Brand Take a close look at your social media to determine two things: • Does it accurately reflect you and your character? • Does it describe your passions and aspirations? Look at your LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and all other social media accounts. Screen for improper content and visuals. Remove photos and posts which can be potentially damaging to your quest to land a job. One simple rule to follow – if your mother wouldn’t approve of a post, it’s likely not acceptable to others. If that doesn’t sway you, just know that employers are scanning your social media. As soon as you show interest in a position, it’s quite possible they’re researching you on the main social media platforms. Make sure your social media is clean. Follow these steps: • Untag yourself from unflattering photos. • Block your friends from posting on your wall and be careful about your posts. • Never comment or post negative things. • Remove groups and comments that are offensive. • Avoid posting inflammatory comments about politics, religion, etc. • Use proper spelling and grammar. • Friend your mom or grandparents. • Remember anything you add to your profile as text can show up in search results. • Google yourself to make sure you've cleaned up any problems. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to create a LinkedIn account. A small percentage of high school students and about half of college students have an account. A very small percentage actually leverage the professionally-driven social media tool.
