ust downstream of the famous “bridge to bridge” rafting section of the Futaleufú River in northern Chilean Patagonia, Gerd and Aniol Serrasolses are busy building their second homes and gathering firewood as winter weather closes in. Brothers from the Catalonia region of Spain, they’re not your average foreigner looking for a slice of paradise in Futaleufú; these two are world renowned whitewater kayakers who have redefined the sport itself. Not only are they pushing the limits of what one can do in an 8-foot plastic boat amidst chaotic whitewater, they’re also setting an example of environmental stewardship and are seeking to share that message with future generations of kayakers.

usto río abajo de la famosa sección de rafting “puente a puente” del río Futaleufú, en el norte de la Patagonia chilena, Gerd y Aniol Serrasolses están ocupados construyendo sus segundas viviendas y recogiendo leña a medida que se acerca el clima invernal. Hermanos de la región de Cataluña en España, no son los extranjeros promedio que buscan un pedazo de paraíso en Futaleufú; estos dos son kayakistas de aguas blancas de renombre mundial que han redefinido el deporte en sí mismo. No solo están empujando los límites de lo que uno puede hacer en un bote de plástico de dos metros en medio de aguas bravas caóticas, sino que también están dando un ejemplo en torno al cuidado del medioambiente y están tratando de compartir ese mensaje con las futuras generaciones de kayakistas.

little brother, Aniol, now 29, also began to kayak, picking up skills from his brother and club instructors. Three years later, they moved four hours west to Sort, Spain, a town with better access to whitewater and the place they now call home for most of the year.

Once introduced to the sport, neither brother looked back. They traveled far and trained hard, according to them “searching for the gnarliest whitewater on the planet.” While most kayakers are known for excelling at a specific style of boating – freestyle, multi-day expeditions, or waterfalls, for example – Gerd and Aniol are well-rounded paddlers who love to do it all.

Gerd was first recognized for his paddling talent in 2013 when he won the Extreme World Kayaking Championship competition in Austria. In 2015, Canoe and Kayak magazine named him Male Paddler of the Year. Over the years he has embarked on kayaking expeditions in Iceland, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, and Norway, among other destinations. Nowadays, Gerd is focused on training for speed; at the 2020 Futaluefú XL whitewater competition he took first place in the Downriver and Sprint categories. “Competition gives me motivation to be better, faster, smarter,” Gerd says. “It gives me the opportunity to challenge myself and want to give my best. It’s a competition to give the best version of myself.” He had high hopes for the 2020 competition season in Europe before his plans, like so many others, were thwarted by the global coronavirus pandemic. Now, he and his life partner, Alicia Casas, and their toddler son Riu, are biding their time in Futaleufú until their planned return to Spain in July.

Aniol Serrasolses is known among paddlers for taking kayaking to the extreme. In addition to winning prestigious competitions like the North Fork Championship in Idaho and the Extreme World Kayak World Championship competition in Austria, he also has recorded first descents and solo runs that other kayakers find jaw-dropping. Aniol considers some of his career’s biggest achievements to be the first descents of several Chilean waterfalls: the 115-foot Puma Waterfall on the Río Fuy in 2012; the 80-foot Newen Falls in Lanin National Park in 2015; and the 80-foot La Leona waterfall on the Rio Claro in 2018.

In his backyard in Futaleufú, Aniol took all-around first place at the Futaleufú XL competition in 2019 and 2020, and in 2017 and 2019 he was named “Rider of the Year” by the Whitewater Awards, an online platform well-known among paddlers that highlights the best of the best in kayaking. One of his achievements noted in 2019 was the creation of “cobra flip,” a freestyle trick that involves barrel-rolling a kayak in midair… off a waterfall. Ironically, some of Aniol’s favorite memories are from grueling expeditions: completing the Rhondu gorge in Pakistan, for example, as well as the Putumayo in Colombia. “The Putumayo was one of the hardest and most stressful expeditions I’ve been part of,” he says. The difficulty, for Aniol, only sweetens the reward.

Hoy en día, Gerd se enfoca en entrenar la velocidad; en la competencia de aguas bravas Futaleufú XL 2020 ocupó el primer lugar en las categorías Downriver y Sprint. “La competencia me motiva a ser mejor, más rápido, más inteligente”, dice Gerd. “Me da la oportunidad de desafiarme y quiero dar lo mejor de mí. Es una competencia para dar la mejor versión de mí mismo”. Él tenía grandes esperanzas para la competencia de la temporada 2020 en Europa antes de que sus planes, como tantos otros, fueran frustrados por la pandemia mundial del coronavirus. Ahora, él y su compañera de vida, Alicia Casas, y su hijo pequeño Riu, pasan el tiempo en Futaleufú a la espera de su planificado regreso a España en julio.

Aniol Serrasolses es conocido entre los remeros por llevar el kayakismo al extremo. Además de ganar prestigiosas competiciones como el North Fork Championship en Idaho y el Campeonato Mundial de Kayak Extremo en Austria, también tiene récords de primeros descensos y carreras en solitario que otros kayakistas encuentran asombrosos. Aniol considera que algunos de los mayores logros de su carrera son los primeros descensos de varias cascadas chilenas: el salto del Puma, de 35 metros, en el río Fuy el 2012; y el salto de La Leona, de 25 metros, en el río Claro el 2018. También la cascada Newen, de 25 metros, en el Parque Nacional Lanín en Argentina el 2015.

En su patio trasero en Futaleufú, Aniol ocupó el primer lugar del all arround en la competencia Futaleufú XL en 2019 y 2020, y en 2017 y 2019 fue nombrado “Rider of the Year” por los Whitewater Awards, una plataforma en línea conocida entre los remeros por destacar lo mejor de lo mejor en el kayakismo. Uno de sus logros notables en 2019 fue la creación del “cobra flip”, un truco de estilo libre que consiste en rodar un kayak en el aire en una

Evan Garcia, professional kayaker and Montana native, first met Aniol in 2009 when the young Catalan was on his second kayaking trip in Chile.

Evan showed Aniol down several creeks in the Pucon area and since then he has paddled rivers all over the world with the Serrasolses brothers. According to him, they push the sport to a whole new level. “Before these guys were around, one lap was perfect, two laps were crazy.

Now lapping extreme sections of river and big rapids is normal thanks to them,” Evan says, referring to Gerd and Aniol’s back-to-back laps in a single day on Canada’s Stikine River.

A high-volume, extremely committing Class V river, the Stikine is typically run as a multi-day trip, and even then, only by the most skilled and experienced paddlers. “This normalization of pushing the boundaries over and over has catapulted our sport into a new era of progression,” Evan says.

As if the 2017 double lap of the Stikine weren’t enough, in 2018 Aniol accomplished what Mountain Life Media called “the most under recognized human achievement of the decade”: A Grand Canyon Stikine descent at record high levels, in record time, solo. The mental toughness and skill required for such a feat are hard to fathom.

Environmental responsibility

O

ne of the biggest gifts that kayaking has afforded the Serrasolses brothers is a close relationship with nature, and it is this connection that inspires them to protect the wild places they have had the privilege to visit. When asked about the biggest threat to free-flowing rivers in Chile, both agree that the 1981 Water Code that privatized water rights is at the top of the list. The next greatest

threat, according to the kayakers, is human inaction. “It’s part of everyone’s responsibility to fight for free-flowing rivers,” Gerd says. “We must search for alternative energy sources that have the least environmental impact possible, and above all we need to reduce our energy consumption.”

The Serrasolses brothers see the current global pandemic as an opportunity to head in that direction, expressing that the economic and industrial halt the pandemic has created is “giving a break to mother earth.” They emphasize the importance of actually learning from this experience and are hopeful that as a global community we will strive to reduce our environmental footprint in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

One of the ways Gerd and his family have been walking the walk since 2016 is by adopting a vegan diet. He cites the significant resources required to create animal-based products as one of many reasons they made the change. Alicia says they’re excited to start a garden next year at their rural Futaleufú home and currently do their best to buy produce from neighbors in the valley.

Aniol also strives to eat consciously by following the advice of a nutritionist and taking into account the planet’s health as well as his own.

As athletes at the top of their sport, the Serrasolses brothers are also constantly training in a variety of ways. On the water, Gerd likes to mix it up by incorporating technique sessions, free paddling sessions, and timed intervals. They try to be on the water almost daily. Off the water, bodyweight training and cardio workouts are important parts of their regimen.

Aniol particularly enjoys biking and surfing as cross training activities.

Al ser consultados sobre la mayor amenaza para los ríos que fluyen libremente en Chile, ambos concuerdan en que el Código de Aguas de 1981 que privatizó los derechos de agua en el país está en la parte superior de la lista. La siguiente amenaza, según los kayakistas, es la inacción humana. “Es tarea de todos luchar para que los ríos sigan fluyendo libres, debemos buscar fuentes energéticas alternativas para que el impacto medioambiental sea el mínimo posible, y principalmente reducir nuestro consumo energético”, sostiene Gerd.

Los hermanos Serrasolses ven la pandemia mundial actual como una oportunidad para ir en esa dirección, expresando que el paro económico e industrial que ha provocado el virus está “dando un descanso a la madre tierra”. Their constant dedication to improvement and rigorous training sets them apart from many other paddlers.

Marcos Gallegos, a professional kayaker from nearby Chaitén, Chile, has known the brothers for years and echoes this sentiment. “They are an inspiration for having made the highest achievements in the sport,” Marcos says, “but also they are a clear example that when you’re passionate about something and focused on it, nothing is impossible.”

Aniol and Gerd have used this same work ethic and passion to begin a nonprofit school for young aspiring paddlers. In 2018, the first version of the “Serrasolses Brothers Program” was launched in Futaleufú with six students, and since then they’ve completed two other week-long courses in India and Peru. The fourth edition was slated for Costa Rica in April 2020 but was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The Serrasolses Brother Program, or SB Program, teaches youth not only about kayaking techniques, whitewater

safety, and hydrology, but also about environmental stewardship and the importance of caring for local rivers. As Aniol puts it, “If the future generation wants to continue enjoying the benefits of this incredible sport, it must take an active role in protecting the natural legacy.”

One of the students from Futaleufú, Antu Gonzalez, now 15-years-old and an impressive class V kayaker, says his participation in the SB Program completely changed the way he paddles. “I already had the basics of kayaking down, but I didn’t feel comfortable leaving my comfort zone or trying new things. I would paddle a class III river straight down, for example, but wouldn’t try surfing. They pushed me to test my limits and overcome them.” Since the course, Antu has paddled several times with Gerd, always learning something new on the water and off. “They’re like my mentors; very cool, simple, never arrogant, always encouraging. They’ve shown me moves I didn’t think were possible in a boat.”

Una de las formas en que Gerd y su familia han estado caminando ese sendero desde 2016 es adoptando una dieta vegana. Cita los importantes recursos necesarios para crear productos de origen animal como una de las muchas razones por las que hicieron el cambio. Alicia dice que están entusiasmados por comenzar una huerta el próximo año en su casa rural de Futaleufú y actualmente hacen todo lo posible para comprar productos a los vecinos del valle. Aniol también se esfuerza por comer conscientemente siguiendo los consejos de un nutricionista y teniendo en cuenta la salud del planeta y la suya.

Como atletas en la cima de su deporte, los hermanos Serrasolses también entrenan constantemente en una variedad de formas. En el agua, a Gerd le gusta mezclar incorporando sesiones técnicas, clases de remo gratuitas, e intervalos cronometrados. Ellos intentan estar en el agua casi a diario. Fuera del agua, el entrenamiento con pesas y los ejercicios cardiovasculares son parte importante de su régimen. Aniol disfruta especialmente del ciclismo y el surf como actividades de entrenamiento cruzado.

Su constante búsqueda de ser mejores y el entrenamiento riguroso los distingue de muchos otros remeros. Marcos Gallegos, un kayakista profesional de la cercana Chaitén, Chile, conoce a los hermanos desde hace años y recalca este sentimiento. “Son una inspiración por haber alcanzado los logros más altos en el deporte”, dice Marcos, “pero también son un claro ejemplo de que cuando te apasiona algo y te enfocas en ello, nada es imposible”.

Aniol y Gerd han usado esta misma ética de trabajo y pasión para comenzar una escuela sin fines de lucro para jóvenes aspirantes kayakistas. El 2018 se lanzó la primera versión del “Programa Hermanos Serrasolses” en Futaleufú con seis estudiantes, y desde entonces han completado otros dos cursos de una semana en India y Perú. La cuarta edición estaba programada en Costa Rica para abril del 2020, pero fue cancelada debido a la pandemia.

El Programa Hermanos Serrasolses, o Programa SB, enseña a los jóvenes no solo sobre técnicas de kayak, seguridad en aguas blancas e hidrología, sino también sobre la gestión ambiental y la importancia de cuidar los ríos locales. Como establece Aniol, “si la generación futura quiere continuar disfrutando de los beneficios de este increíble deporte, debe desempeñar un papel activo en la protección del legado natural”.

Uno de los estudiantes de Futaleufú, Antu González, ahora de 15 años y un impresionante kayakista de clase V, dice que su participación en el Programa SB cambió por completo la forma en que rema: “Ya manejaba los conceptos básicos, pero no me sentía cómodo al salir de mi zona de confort o probar cosas nuevas. Remaría un río de clase III hacia abajo, por ejemplo, pero no intentaría surfear. Me empujaron a probar mis límites y superarlos”. Desde el curso, Antu ha remado varias veces con Gerd, siempre aprendiendo algo nuevo dentro y fuera del agua. “Son como mis mentores; súper buena onda, simples, nunca arrogantes, siempre alentadores. Me han mostrado movimientos que no creía que fueran posibles en un bote”.

Throughout their kayaking careers the Serrasolses brothers have also developed a special relationship as mentors to each other. Often competing in the same championships and running difficult whitewater together, they both agree that the other provides inspiration as much as companionship. “Gerd is a perfectionist, he puts so much effort in everything he does,” Aniol says. “My whole life has been about trying to match him.”

Gerd agrees, saying he wouldn’t be as good without Aniol. “He makes me push myself and I think it’s great that we learn from each other.”

Learning from the unexpected

T

hough neither anticipated spending the autumn and early winter in Futaleufú, Gerd and Aniol decided several years ago that it would be

the perfect place for building second homes during Patagonia’s summer season, December through February.

“Patagonia has always had a special place in our hearts: the rivers, the people, the mountains and trees… everything makes this a magical spot where it’s easy to get trapped,” Gerd says. The new beginning in Futaleufú is an important marker in their evolving kayaking careers and personal lives. For Gerd and Alicia, it’s where they are making memories and setting roots as a young family.

Meanwhile, Aniol says his motivation for kayaking today is quite differ-

When asked what advice they would give aspiring kayakers, Gerd and Aniol are quick to respond. “Take your time acquiring new skills and learn to trust yourself,” Gerd says.

“Make good decisions for you and your team and enjoy this beautiful sport that connects us to rivers and nature. And when things aren’t going

“Patagonia siempre ha tenido un lugar especial en nuestros corazones: los ríos, la gente, las montañas, los árboles… todo hace de este un sitio mágico donde es fácil quedarse atrapado”, cuenta Gerd. El nuevo comienzo en Futaleufú es un marcador importante en sus ascendentes carreras como kayakistas y vidas personales. Para Gerd y Alicia, es donde están creando recuerdos y estableciendo raíces como una familia joven. Mientras tanto, Aniol dice que su motivación para practicar kayak hoy es bastante diferente de lo que era hace años. “Al principio solo quería ser realmente bueno, empujar los límites del deporte. A medida que envejezco, mi enfoque ha cambiado hacia explorar y enseñar a las generaciones más jóvenes a través de programas educativos como el Programa SB”. Aniol también concentra mucho tiempo y energía en documentales cortos y proyectos audiovisuales. LUIS SEPÚLVEDA 1949 – 2020

“One is from where they feel most at home,” the Chilean writer Luis Sepulveda wrote in Patagonia Express, perhaps his signature book about the region. And undoubtedly one place where Sepulveda truly felt very much at home was in Patagonia, a region that was the main subject as well of other popular books by him such as Mundo al Fin del Mundo (World at the End of the World), Últimas Noticias del Sur (Latest News From the South), and Full Circle: A South American Journey.

Sepulveda tragically passed away on April 16 at the age of 70, one of the earliest and most famous victims of Covid-19. Patagon Journal presents this tribute and remembrance of this great writer and passionate defender of Patagonia.

was born by chance in Ovalle, you have to be born somewhere…I’m from many places, but essentially I am Latin American,” Sepúlveda said in an interview with the Universidad de Valparaiso in November 2015. “I’ve essentially tried to reflect that. Not that I’m a great or not so great writer of fiction, but rather a writer who is fiercely Latin American.”

Exiled by the Augusto Pinochet military dictatorship in Chile, Sepulveda lived a colorful life with recurrent adventures throughout Patagonia and Latin America. His long and productive writing career included more than 20 novels, children’s and travel books that were translated into 52 languages and

the subject of several films and documentaries. Books like Patagonia Express, The Old Man Who Read Love Stories (El Viejo que leía novels de amor) and The Story of A Seagull and The Cat Who Taught Her To Fly (Historia de una gaviota y del gato que le enseñó a volar) have won scores of international awards, such as Spain’s prestigious literary awards El Premio Primavera and Tigre Juan Award.

Sepulveda was proudly leftist in his political leanings, even sporting as his Twitter profile photo an image of him wearing an ushanka – a black, traditional Russian military hat with the hammer and sickle symbol of the Soviet Union – while standing in Moscow’s Red Square.

His political leanings may stem at least in part from his upbringing. His father José was a militant of the Chilean Communist party; his mother, Irma Calfucura, was a nurse of Mapuche descent; and his grandfather was active in the anarchist political movement in Spain before fleeing to Chile from Franco’s Spain.

While studying theater at the University of Chile, Sepúlveda became a student leader during the Salvador Allende government. He was arrested and imprisoned by the Augusto Pinochet military regime but managed to get out of the country in 1977 with the help of the German branch of Amnesty International.

Working with a theater group he traveled to Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay, before settling in Ecuador, where he spent six months living with a tribe of Shuar Indians as part of a UNESCO research program, an experience which would later inspire him to write The Old Man Who Read Love Stories.

In 1979, Sepúlveda joined the Simon Bolivar International Brigade to support the struggle to oust the Anastasio Somoza regime in Nicaragua. A year later he left for Europe, living in Hamburg for 14 years. He also became an environmental activist, and from 1982 to 1987 worked for Greenpeace as a coordinator and crew member on their ship The Rainbow Warrior.

Sepúlveda eventually settled in 1997 in Gijon, Spain, where he lived for the rest of his life and saw his literary career reach international stardom.

Sepulveda’s marriage to Carmen Yáñez is a dramatic love story in itself.

Just 19 when they met, he married Yáñez, a radical leftist who would go on to become a poet, in 1971 and they had a son, aptly named, Carlos Lenin. But they separated over “ideological differences, that were irreconcilable” three years later and then lost contact altogether when Sepulveda was imprisoned by the Pinochet regime (Yáñez was also imprisoned by Pinochet’s henchmen and went into hiding in Argentina before fleeing to Sweden in 1981). After Sepulveda had three children with a second wife and then became single again, they would reunite twenty years later in Germany.

and remained together until Sepúlveda’s death in April after doing battle with the coronavirus for 48 days in a hospital in Oviedo, Spain.

Passion for nature and adventure

S

epulveda’s relationship with Patagonia, and indeed his passion for adventure and travel, started at an early age and is described in detail in World at the End of the World.

Sepulveda writes that he received from his Spanish uncle “Tío Pepe” – a veteran of the Spanish Civil War who he describes as the black sheep of the family – adventure books from renowned writers like Jules Verne, Emilio Salgari, Jack London and Herman Melville, whose seminal novel Moby Dick, Sepúlveda says, “changed his life.” The young, budding writer was also hugely influenced by the works of Chilean author Francisco Coloane, who wrote adventure fiction about whaling and the canals and fjords of the Chilean Patagonia coast.

Inspired by what he read, when he was 16-years-old, Sepúlveda embarked on a trip to the southern tip of Chile during the austral summer. He hitched a roundtrip ride from Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas onboard a passenger and cargo ship earning his keep peeling potatoes, washing dishes and feeding the crew.

The experience kindled a life-long spirit of adventure. “I was in Punta Arenas, I had calloused hands and, in my pockets, the first money I had ever earned working,” Sepúlveda wrote.

Sepulveda’s summer adventure also included working onboard one of the last Chilean boats to hunt sperm whales in Bahía Cook, west of the Beagle channel.

Many years later, Sepúlveda would return to Patagonia, but this time onboard a Greenpeace ship to chase down and try to prevent a Japanese whaling vessel, the Nishin Maru, from carrying out its bloody deeds.

In Chatwin’s footsteps

t is in Patagonia Express that Sepúlveda really begins to explore a deeper inner, personal meaning of Patagonia. This book is very much a homage to one of Sepúlveda’s phantom mentors, Bruce Chatwin, the English author of In Patagonia, a book widely considered to

Pasión por la naturaleza y la aventura

Sepúlveda recalls a meeting and conversation with Chatwin in 1983 at Café Zurich in Barcelona where they hatched plans to travel together to Patagonia to visit the Cholila ranch, the place where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid resided from 1901 to 1905. However, the trip was delayed as Sepulveda was prohibited from returning to Chile until the return of democracy. By that time, Chatwin had tragically died and Sepúlveda feels obligated to go himself.

Sepúlveda’s narrative is an eclectic travelogue that is noticeably similar in style to that of In Patagonia and even revisits many of the same places. For Sepúlveda, Patagonia Express is also similarly a personal introspective journey and a round trip in search of something. While Chatwin begins In Patagonia in search of the origins of a “piece of brontosaurus” skin from Patagonia that he found in his grandmother’s cabinet as a child, Sepúlveda begins with anecdotes of his childhood involving his Andalusian grandfather, who gifted him a journey to “nowhere in particular.” He promises to return

to his grandfather’s birth town of Martos in Spain, something that he does at the end of the novel.

But unlike Chatwin, Sepúlveda is returning to his native Chile after many years in exile and often departs from Chatwin’s distant observational style of an outsider. Sepúlveda also praises the human qualities of the Patagonian inhabitants and critiques the arrival of the white colonizers that came to exploit the virgin landscape. “Patagonia teaches you to get to know the people by the way they look at you,” Sepúlveda writes.

hile unable to travel with Chatwin, Sepúlveda would eventually find another companion for his travels to Patagonia: the Buenos Aires-born photographer Daniel Mordzinski, with whom he published in 2012 Latest News from the South (Últimas Noticas del Sur), a literary-visual collage of stories about the region.

They would make three research trips together – covering 3,500km, from Bariloche to Cape Horn to Chiloe. During their first trip in 1996, the pair

Luis Sepúlveda were so engrossed with the people they met and their stories that after one month they only managed to reconnoiter 100km. In 2000, they headed south again as part of a movie production called Tierra del Fuego, directed by Miguel Littín, for which Sepúlveda was the script writer and Mordzinski in charge of documenting the filming. The two found time

away from the set to continue working on the book. In 2007, during the third trip, they came away with a new understanding of the region and how to tell the story. “It couldn’t be a travel journal or a series of reports, the narrator and the photographer had to stand aside and allow Patagonia and its people tell the story,” Sepúlveda told Argentine newspaper La Nación, in 2012.

ucas Chiappe, an Argentine environmentalist and Patagon Journal advisory board member who lives near El Bolson, speaks warmly when we ask him about “Lucho” (what Luis Sepulveda’s friends affectionately call him). Sepulveda’s first visit to Chiappe’s secluded Patagonia home in the Epuyen Valley was supposed to have been for an interview lasting perhaps a few hours but instead he ended up staying for several days and commencing a lasting friendship.

Chiappe is one of a group of young Argentines who relocated to Patagonia in 1976 seeking to escape the brutal repression of the dictatorship. In the mid-80s, he became a fierce defender of the forests that were being cut down by Japanese wood companies in southern Chile and Argentina. In 1999, Sepulveda wrote about Chiappe’s story for the Spanish newspaper El Pais, and his literary powers effectively transformed Chiappe and the plight of the Patagonian forests into legend. An excerpt:

Chiappe, this Lucas, said no, and spoke for the forest with the countrymen that live south of the 42nd parallel.

• Why do you want to save the forest? asked a fellow countryman.

• Because we have to. Why is it going to be? Lucas answered.

And so, against the wind and tide, defying and suffering threats, beatings, imprisonment, defamation, the “Lemu” project, which in the Mapuche language means forest, was born.

Sepúlveda went on to write the introduction to Chiappe’s photography book Alma de Bosque, and invited Chiappe to Spain in 2008 to present his work at the Salón del Libro Iberoamericano, an annual literary festival in Gijón, Spain, that Sepulveda founded in 1997 to bring together Latin American writers with European publishers. “[Sepúlveda was] was always solid like a Coihue tree, and a friend always ready to laugh and celebrate and lend a hand or give advice regarding whatever environmental battle I was fighting,” says Chiappe.

r. President: I am a writer born in Chile and I have deep knowledge of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. This southernly region and its life, peoples and dreams feature in many of my books, which have been translated into many languages. I love and fight for these regions with a passion as healthy and peaceful as its inhabitants.

Only a short time ago, under the instruction of the offices in which today you exercise the functions of government, and aided by the coldness of certain banks, an environmental crime was almost committed against Patagonia, and more specifically the Aysén region. A company named Noranda, whose postal address is in Canada but whose legal home is in the tax-haven Cayman Islands, took advantage of Chile’s loathsome and supremely liberal water laws. In doing so, it attempted to block, halt and kill three rivers that connect to the Aysén Fjord in order to build three hydroelectric plants. These plants would have powered an aluminium

factory, which is one of the most polluting industries that exist, and a port to receive bauxite and other minerals. The plans were staunchly opposed by the local residents. The alternative economic, social and cultural project called “Aysén Reserve of Life Project” argued that the approximately 40,000 residents of Puerto Aysén, Puerto Chacabuco, Coyhaique and other towns would have seen their life, culture, hopes, present and future seriously affected.

These “nobodies” are, in fact, joined by more “nobodies” all over the world because a healthy and sustainable environment, ecology and economy is core to a vision of the future shared by millions of men and women who want to be citizens before consumers. These “nobodies” asked for something simple and legitimate: a study into the project’s environmental impact carried out by an independent scientific body – not by the same company executing the project, nor by the government directly involved and partial to

Sepulveda also decided when completing Latest News from the South that he was witnessing the end of an era in Patagonia due to globalization. “Originally, this book was the chronicle of a trip made by two friends but time, the violence of the economic upheavals and the voracity of the winners have turned it into a collection of posthumous news, the novel of a disappeared region” Sepulveda writes in the introduction. “Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego have always been considered territories that can be robbed with impunity. In the name of breeding and progress, ethnic groups, races, forests have been exterminated, and when there is no longer a single living Indian, their remains, their mummies, have been sent to museums of the world. “ The book is filled with the extraordinary characters they met along the way. There is Tano, who is engrossed in an endless search for a violin in the middle of the pampa. And the legendary Omar Villalba, otherwise known as “Coquito”, or the “elf of El Bolson,” who made everyone

believe he was a millionaire with a huge inheritance but turned out to be an impostor.

Sepúlveda valued the simplicity of the Patagonian people.

He writes: “As in so many towns in the distant southern provinces, in El Maitén people used to sit at the station to watch the train go by. That custom confirmed the existence of time and the universe: if the train had passed that meant that it had left from somewhere and was heading somewhere else.”

Besides his earlier work with Greenpeace, Sepúlveda was active in environmental campaigns in Chilean Patagonia, such as combatting plans for the HidroAysén dams and the Alumysa aluminum project in the Aysen region.

In May 2011, Sepúlveda wrote an open letter (see accompanying box) to then President Sebastián Piñera, which was published on the website of Patagon Journal prior to the launch of our magazine, in which he called on the president to put a stop to the HydroAysén project.

En nombre de la reproducción y el progreso se han exterminado grupos étnicos, razas y bosques, y cuando ya no quede ningún indio vivo, sus restos, sus momias, habrán sido enviadas a museos del mundo”.

El libro rebosa de los extraordinarios personajes que conocieron en el camino. Está Tano, absorto en su interminable búsqueda de un violín en medio de la pampa. Y el legendario Omar Villalba, también conocido como el “Coquito” o el “duende de El Bolsón”, que hizo creer a todos que era millonario y que tenía una herencia enorme, pero resultó ser un impostor.

Sepúlveda valoraba la sencillez de la gente de la Patagonia. Él escribió: “Como en tantos pueblos de las lejanas provincias del sur, en El Maitén la gente acostumbraba sentarse en la estación a ver el paso del tren. their business interests. These “nobodies,” crassly labelled “eco-terrorists,” managed to stop – albeit temporarily – one of the most egregious criminal acts against Patagonia. Mr. President, I myself was one of those “nobodies.” I made a documentary named Corazon Verde that was premiered at the Venice Film Festival and united 40,000 “nobodies” with hundreds of thousands more “nobodies” in the defense of Patagonia, the pristine austral world belonging to all humankind. I am one of many who stopped a “7 billion-dollar investment” and just as the rivers continue to flow into the Aysén Fjord despite attempts to kill it, I wear my actions with pride.

Mr. President, we no w find ourselves before another disproportion, a new attempt to end the life of one of the last unpolluted regions of our planet, a place of incalculable value. The value of Patagonia, its vital nature, its peoples and their hopes and dreams cannot be measured. Not by your presidential offices, not by the stock exchange, and much less by the despicable boards of shareholders at the energy companies desperate to approve the HidroAysén megaproject.

You, Mr. President, rightfully declared the Chilean horse a national monument.

When you did so, many people were relieved that your declaration saved this magnificent animal from genetic experimentation. Do you not believe then, Mr. President, that a river running 2,300 kms long and 100 meters wide through our nation also deserves the same dignity you afforded the Chilean horse? Can you visualise a 23,000-hectare stretch of land? It is difficult to translate such numbers

into an image. I ask you to imagine 23,000 football stadiums, one next to the other.

Picture them filled with trees and forests. Not soulless pine and eucalyptus plantations, but the noble native Chilean forests with their marvellous diversity, their natural fauna and their peoples: Chilean men and women who grew up around these forests and love them. Mr. President, HidroAysén will bring total deforestation, annihilation and extermination to 23,000 hectares of Chilean forest.

I can certainly imagine that land myself, because I know Patagonia. Because I love the south and its peoples’ hopes and dreams. That is why I oppose the realization of this crime against ecology and humanity calling itself HidroAysén.

In the near future, a bust of yourself will take its place in the gallery of former Chilean presidents. When the cleaner dusts you off with a feather duster, it is up to you whether he proudly says: “I am dusting the bust of an ex-president who saved Patagonia from destruction,” or whether he simply walks away and refuses to clean the image of the destroyer of one of the most beautiful, purest regions of our planet. It’s your decision, Mr. President.

E imagínelos llenos de árboles, de bosques, no de burdas plantaciones de pino o eucaliptos, sino del noble bosque nativo chileno, de la maravillosa diversidad forestal, de la fauna que habita en esos bosques, y de las gentes, de los chilenos y chilenas que conocen esos bosques y los aman. Hidroaysén, ciudadano Presidente, significa la completa deforestación, la aniquilación, el exterminio de veintitrés mil hectáreas de bosque chileno.

Yo sí puedo imaginar esa extensión, porque conozco la Patagonia, porque amo el mundo austral, a sus gentes, a sus sueños y esperanzas, y por eso me opongo a la realización de ese crimen de lesa ecología y lesa humanidad que se llama Hidroaysén.

En un futuro próximo un busto suyo ocupará un lugar en la galería de los adustos ex presidentes chilenos, y cuando el encargado de limpieza sacuda el polvo con un plumero, de usted depende que ese hombre diga con admiración: estoy quitándole el polvo al busto de un ex presidente que salvó de la destrucción a la Patagonia, o que simplemente pase de largo y se niegue a desempolvar la imagen del destructor de una de las regiones más bellas y puras del planeta. De usted depende, ciudadano Presidente.

epúlveda once said that the people that read his works are people similar to him: nomads, outsiders, and everyday people. He often wrote about animals, for example, because he believed it was his job as writer to portray the underdog or the losers of this world. “My reader is the lady that collects bottles to put them in the container, or the person that goes on humanitarian missions to countries where they might get killed,” he said. “That is the spectrum of my readership, and a species to which I belong.”

Yet, like a bird migrating south each winter, he always went back to Patagonia. His

longtime photographer Daniel Mordzinksi says that, when having troubled moments over, say, environmental crises or social conflicts in the world, at the end of the day Sepulveda would find peace and comfort remembering his travels in Patagonia. Sepulveda told him that “those trips brought him great joy and that whenever he was faced with difficult times, he found refuge in re-reading the notes that he had taken along the way.”

Indeed, Peter Hartmann, coordinator of the environmental group Coalición Ciudadana por Aysén Reserva de Vida and a collaborator with Sepúlveda in Patagonian eco-campaigns, says that shortly after Sepulveda’s passing, he encountered his son Carlos on a Coyhaique street. “Upon receiving my greetings and hugs,” Hartmann said that his son told him he was sure that “Lucho will return to the Patagonia that he so much loves.”

A pesar de todo, al igual que un ave que migra hacia el sur cada invierno, siempre volvió a la Patagonia. Su fotógrafo de toda la vida, Daniel Mordzinski, dice que, cuando vivía momentos difíciles, digamos crisis ambientales o conflictos sociales en el mundo, al final del día Sepúlveda encontraba paz y consuelo recordando sus viajes en la Patagonia: “Él también sintió una gran felicidad haciendo estos viajes, y que cada vez que tenía momentos duros se refugiaba en la relectura de las notas que había tomado durante nuestros viajes”.

ature photographers are people used to being outdoors. Our job (when we’re not at home trying to sell photographs) consists of spending hours upon hours in the mountains, following wild animals, photographing landscapes at dawn, or lying on the ground between grass and mosses framing a small flower.

However, since mid-March, with the declaration of a “state of alarm” in Spain, we have been forced to remain locked up inside our homes to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic. And this happened right at the beginning of spring, the time of the year when we are busiest of all. It’s a tough blow that will cause us considerable financial losses.

So here we all are, behind closed doors and away from the natural world that we love and need so much. But nature photographers are also used to having to wait hours or even days, whether it’s staying motionless in a hiding place to capture the image of a bird, or eyeing that ray of good light to better capture a landscape. And even in the most inert of our cities, a glimpse of

De un momento a otro, millones de personas se vieron obligadas a permanecer encerradas en sus hogares bajo estrictas normas de confinamiento y con la incertidumbre de no saber a ciencia cierta por cuánto tiempo se extendería la cuarentena obligatoria.

Desde su balcón en Barcelona, quizá tratando de no enloquecer en esos primeros días de encierro forzado, el fotógrafo de naturaleza Òscar Domínguez dedicó horas a observar su entorno inmediato para no perder esa sensibilidad y ese ojo agudo que se adquiere llevando una vida al aire libre. “Pensé que era buena idea hacer fotografías cada día para mantener los sentidos alerta”, cuenta.

Pero pronto lo que comenzó como una vía de escape tomó un cariz inesperado. Motivado por una cuenta que descubrió en Instagram, Domínguez se puso en contacto con fotógrafos amigos con los que comparte una visión similar

That is why seven nature photographers have opened an Instagram account – the photographic social network by antonomasia – with the name “Wild Confinement.” There we will share each day of the week images of nature taken from our homes during

these days of confinement.

The idea came from Oscar Dominguez, who invited some professionals whose photographic philosophy is based on authenticity and respect for nature, until reaching the number of seven photographers, enough for each to publish at least one photograph a week. The goal is to stay active (since we can’t work normally right now) and show positive images of the environment closest to us.

Acostumbrados a moverse al aire libre, buena parte de la labor de los fotógrafos de naturaleza consiste en pasar días en las montañas, en abandonar la carpa de madrugada en busca de la luz del amanecer en el sitio preciso, en seguir animales salvaje en su hábitat natural y en arrastrarse por la tierra para lo-

grar un disparo, pero ahora toda su creatividad iba a ser puesta a prueba en la comodidad de sus hogares en medio de un largo y forzoso confinamiento, quizá para darse cuenta que la naturaleza está más cerca de lo que a veces creemos.

“Debido a la situación global del planeta nos interesan incluso más las relaciones entre medio ambiente y seres humanos. Esta situación anómala que estamos viviendo, donde las ciudades han quedado prácticamente vacías, ha resultado ser un escenario nuevo para documentar cómo actúa la naturaleza”, sostiene Domínguez. Es parte de lo que Wild Confinement intentó mostrar al mundo desde el encierro.

rom the air, the Patagonian landscape is seen as a colorful mosaic of lush temperate rainforest, glacier-fed rivers and lakes, and winding fjords – but also vast patches of wetlands covered by the peat moss Sphagnum magellanicum, a plant ranging in hue from reddish-orange to green. For years, only scientists recognized the importance of this inconspicuous plant. But recent studies are uncovering the uncanny ability of peat moss-dominated ecosystems to sequester carbon, and Chilean officials striving to meet climate change mitigation commitments are moving to protect these fragile places. Still, despite some conservation improvements of late, peat moss extraction continues apace across Chile’s south taking advantage of inadequate regulations.

Patagonia is home to the world’s southernmost peatlands, also known as peat bogs, mires, or turberas in Spanish. Peatlands are a unique type of wetland, because instead of mineral soil (which is a mixture of sand, silt or clay) they have an organic soil comprised of dead and partially decayed plant remains called peat. Peatlands form in some places because the activity of soil decomposing organisms is limited by permanent soil saturation, or in layman’s terms, by the constant presence of water.

Government studies estimate that Patagonia is home to 90 percent of Chile’s estimated 7.6 million acres (3.1 million hectares) of peatlands, with most in the Magallanes region though they’re also found in the Aysén and Los Lagos regions, especially on the main island of Chiloé. In Argentina, peatlands

<medioambiente> are primarily found on Tierra del Fuego Island, numbering nearly 67,000 acres (27,000 hectares). Altogether, the entire area covered by peatlands in Patagonia is equivalent in size to that of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

Scientists who have studied peatlands extensively in Chile over the past several years are quick to point out that they are entire ecosystems unto themselves, comprising not only peat, but also the water, plants, animals and highly specialized microorganisms living within them. Furthermore, these unique ecosystems develop very slow on a human time scale and thus cannot easily be restored. Studies show the peat accumulate at rates of just 0.2 to 0.4 inches (0.5 – 1 mm) per year, which means that one vertical yard or meter of peat might take 1000 to 2000 years to form. Some of Patagonia’s oldest peatlands formed shortly after the end of the last glaciation, around 14,000 years ago. The average peatland is an impressive 18 feet (5.5 meters) deep, though there are records of peatlands as much as 39 feet (12 meters) deep.

Because peatlands date back to the last ice age, they can offer a window into the past. Archaeological and paleo-biological remains are often found in peatlands.

Their anaerobic conditions also preserve plant residues, pollen, micro-organisms and volcanic ash – chronologically ordered within peat layers like chapters in a book.

That kind of information lets scientists read about events that shaped ecosystems in the past and gain insights that can help us understand how today’s ecosystems will be affected by future human development and climate change.

Given their inability to regenerate during our lifetime, peatlands are categorized by Chile as a non-renewable fossil resource and its extraction is therefore regulated via concessions overseen by the mining ministry.

The surface layer of peat bogs, however – the living Sphagnum moss – is categorized separately as an agricultural product and its extraction is regulated by Chile’s Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG).

Jorge Hoyos, a researcher who’s been studying peatlands with the Center for Climate and Resilience Research (CR2) and the University of Magallanes, says this management approach “divides the peatland.” From an environmental regulatory perspective, that is problematic as

parte de ellas en la región de Magallanes, aunque también se encuentran en las regiones de Aysén y Los Lagos, especialmente en la isla grande de Chiloé. En Argentina las turberas se hallan principalmente en la isla de Tierra del Fuego, con casi 27.000 hectáreas.

En conjunto, el área que cubren las turberas en la Patagonia equivale al tamaño del Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur. Los científicos que han estudiado exhaustivamente las turberas en Chile durante los últimos años indican que son ecosistemas enteros en sí mismos, compuestos no solo de turba, sino que también de agua, plantas, animales y microorganismos altamente especializados que viven en ellos. Además, estos ecosistemas únicos se desarrollan muy lentamente en una escala temporal humana, por lo que su restauración no es sencilla. Los estudios muestran que la turba se acumula a tasas de solo 0,5 – 1 mm por año, lo que significa que un metro vertical de turba puede tardar entre 1.000 y 2.000 años en formarse. Algunas de las turberas más antiguas de la Patagonia se formaron poco después del final de la última glaciación, hace unos 14.000 años. Una turbera promedio tiene unos increíbles 5,5 metros de profundidad, aunque hay registros de turberas de hasta 12 metros de profundidad.

manipulation or extraction of either parts of the peatland – the fossil material at the base, or the sponge-like moss closer to the top – inevitably affects the other.

Peter Hartmann, coordinator of the Aisén Reserva de Vida citizen coalition, agrees and calls this management regime the biggest threat to conserving peatlands. “We need to manage peatlands as whole ecosystems rather than separate parts identified by their commodity value,” he says. “That also means taking into consideration the ecological services they provide.”

Indeed, peatlands have a crucial role in hydrological cycles. While all wetlands store, filter, and provide fresh water, the porosity and sponginess of peat and Sphagnum mosses means that peatlands are capable of absorbing and holding extremely high volumes of water. This reduces the impacts of flooding during heavy rainfall, or glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs ) in places like Aysen, while providing reservoirs of muchneeded water during dry summers and periods of drought.

Ciertamente, las turberas cumplen un papel crucial en los ciclos hidrológicos. by Jorge Hoyos estimates that Patagonia’s peatlands have accumulated an impressive 4.8 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide. When broken down into carbon sequestration per hectare, Hoyos estimates that peatlands hold 4.7 times more carbon than the aboveground biomass of Chile’s native forests.

Threats

F

or centuries, the rugged terrain and vast distances of Patagonia kept peatlands isolated from the public eye and maintained them largely intact. But road construction has intensified over the past decade and once inaccessible peat bogs now face increasing risks. The greatest threat? Peat mining and the harvest of living Sphagnum magellanicum mosses, both commodified by the international horticultural market. Although peat mining is still in its infancy in Patagonia, the harvesting of mosses is a growing industry with extraction taking hold especially in the watersheds of key rivers like the Baker and Palena and several sites in Chiloé.

In Tierra del Fuego, beavers are also an important threat to peatlands. This non-native, invasive species is destroying the fragile hydrological balance of these ecosystems by building channels that drain them and dams that inundate them.

Drained peatlands, either by beavers or by human activity, release stored carbon and accelerate climate change. And that is no minor issue, to give an idea of the magnitude involved,

Future protection

P

olicies and legal protections for Patagonia’s vulnerable peatlands are lagging compared to the rest of the world, but in April 2020 Chile’s environment ministry made a significant step forward by including wetland protection in the country’s revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), its commitment to reduce greenhouse gases in the 2015 Paris climate accord. At last year’s annual UN climate summit (COP25) in Madrid, Chile further committed to creating a comprehensive national wetland inventory and a separate peatland inventory in southern Chile. This revised NDC commitment also mandates the establishment of

Protección futura

L

as políticas y la protección legal de las turberas vulnerables de la Patagonia están rezagadas en comparación con el resto del mundo, pero en abril de 2020 el Ministerio de Medio Ambiente de Chile dio un importante paso al incluir la protección de los humedales en las Contribuciones de Determinación Nacional (NDC) revisadas del país, su compromiso para reducir el efecto invernadero en el acuerdo climático de París 2015. En la cumbre anual de la ONU sobre el clima (COP25), del año pasado en Madrid, Chile se comprometió todavía más con la creación de un inventario nacional completo de humedales y un inventario separado de las turberas del sur del país. Este compromiso revisado de NDC también exige el establecimiento de medidas para calcular la capacidad de las turberas para mitigar el cambio climático, así como la designación de 20 nuevas áreas protegidas de humedales costeros para el 2025 y otras 10 para el 2030.

Ciertamente son buenas noticias para las turberas de Chile, pero muchos dudan que estas medidas se traduzcan en una protección significativa en el terreno. Las regulaciones siguen siendo vagas y difíciles

That is certainly good news for Chile’s peatlands, but many remain skeptical that their measures will translate into meaningful, on-the-ground protection. Regulations remain vague and hard to enforce, and delays in implementation have left peatlands vulnerable to exploitation.

In August 2018, for example, legislators passed Supreme Decree N°25 which requires would-be extractors of the Sphagnum magellanicum moss present a harvest plan to Chile’s Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG). Their plans must include specifying the length of Sphagnum moss strands to be harvested and what measures will be taken to keep the remaining peat ecosystem intact. Yet, while the decree’s publication was stalled and delayed for an entire year due to lobbying by the ag-

ricultural industry, small-scale entrepreneurs and large corporations amassed as much peat moss as they could before the law came into effect. In August 2019, just three weeks after the Supreme Decree N°25 became official, crucial parts were modified, weakening the protection measures and reducing the obligatory commitments to sustainably manage peatlands. In February 2020, SAG announced it was ready to begin enforcing the new regulations. Still, the large geographic distribution of peatland ecosystems will make monitoring in the field quite the logistical challenge and highly expensive.

Even as Chilean society learns more about the tremendous ecological importance of keeping its peatlands intact in Patagonia, the threats to these fragile ecosystems continue.

Recent promises made by the Chilean government to strengthen the protection of this valuable, non-renewable resource to combat climate change are a positive start, but more action is urgently needed.

No obstante, la gran distribución geográfica de los ecosistemas de turberas hará que la supervisión sobre el terreno sea un desafío logístico muy costoso.

Mientras la sociedad chilena aprende más sobre la tremenda importancia ecológica de mantener intactas sus turberas en la Patagonia, las amenazas sobre estos frágiles ecosistemas continúan. Las recientes promesas realizadas por el gobierno chileno para reforzar la protección de este valioso recurso natural no renovable en pro de combatir el cambio climático son un comienzo positivo, pero se necesitan más acciones con urgencia.

t all came down to those last few meters. Euphoria was coursing through my veins, and despite being at an altitude of almost 21,201 feet (6462 meters), a revitalizing energy began to pour into my legs. All that remained was the final push: a wide summit ridge that would

leave us perched above the city of La Paz, the skies and our own ambitions. Along the way we had traversed enormous crevasses, navigated complex ice passages, and passed through a mountain camp adorned with crucifixes that reminded us of the fragility and ephemerality of life.

A few steps from the summit, the dazzling sunrise showed us the immensity of the world and left us without a shadow of doubt as to our own insignificance. Just a few dozen meters more, nothing really. One foot in front of the other. Breathe.

Repeat. Until we make it. Finally, our feet touched the summit of Nevado Illimani. We embraced each other, intoxicated by our monumental victory. At that moment we felt invincible. The sensation, however, soon faded, as the descent is always more difficult than the ascent.

The adventure had started well before this point, though. Just as Tibet and Nepal imbue the Himalayas with their mystique, Bolivia and its people form their own cultural mosaic, transporting you to a world where tradition meets modernity. That is part of the very essence of any trip to Bolivia from the moment you get off the plane at El Alto airport, the highest international airport in the world at more than 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) above sea level.

Getting on the bus at the airport and travelling toward La Paz, the frenetic chaos of horns and bustling streets offers a glimpse of what awaits you in Bolivia’s capital city. It is hard to imagine what Bolivia is like without seeing it for yourself: you can picture it in a thousand different ways, but nothing compares to actually being there and immersing yourself in its culture. About two-thirds of the country’s 11.7 million people belong to one of 36 indigenous groups, giving the country a cultural richness that is worth knowing.

La Paz is the starting point; that is where it all begins. My favorite part of the city is Illampu street, where the noise, cars, crowds, and hundreds of shops and market stalls reign supreme. Everything seems to happen there. Just a few blocks away, you will also find countless places offering mountaineering and adventure trips and the famous Mercado Rodríguez, a market where you can stock up on anything you may want. It’s a place whose influence spreads out onto the streets, which are filled with a peculiar mix of aromas and colors and where indigenous women, known locally as cholitas, sell their goods from bulk bags wearing their traditional skirts, hats, and shawls. Other landmarks include the Mercado Lanza and its lively local scene, and the Plaza Mayor de San Francisco with its historic church.

If you survive the altitude sickness and make it through the dizzying local markets, it means you are ready to continue on your adventure, and begin what you came for. The Cordillera Real is Bolivia’s most famous mountain range. While there are other mesmerizing peaks outside of La Paz, such as Nevado Sajama, the majority of them, or at least the most iconic ones, are found in the Cordillera Real which has a special mystique.

Nuestros pies hollaban la cúspide del Nevado Illimani. Nos dimos un largo abrazo, embriagados por ese trago victorioso. Nos sentíamos invencibles, aunque esa sensación siempre se desvanece pronto: descender es mucho más complejo que ascender.

Pero la aventura comienza incluso mucho antes. Así como el Tíbet o Nepal impregnan de su mística a los Himalayas, Bolivia y su gente conforman su propio mosaico, transportándote a un mundo donde la tradición se enlaza con la modernidad. Y esa es parte de la esencia misma que marca el viaje al país altiplánico, ya desde el preciso instante en que bajas del avión en el aeropuerto El Alto, nada menos que a 4 mil metros sobre el nivel del mar (m.s.n.m.).

Subir a ese colectivo y bajar hacia La Paz en el frenético caos de bocinazos y calles ya te da un atisbo de qué es lo que te espera en la ciudad capital de Bolivia. Cuesta dimensionar Bolivia: uno podrá imaginarlo de mil formas, pero nada se compara a estar allí y empaparse de su cultura. Alrededor de dos

tercios de los 11,7 millones de personas del país pertenecen a uno de los 36 grupos indígenas, lo que le da a la nación una riqueza cultural que vale la pena conocer.

La Paz es el punto de partida. Allí comienza la historia. Mi sitio preferido es calle Illampu, un sitio donde reina el ruido, los autos, las multitudes y cientos de puestos comerciales. Es allí donde todo pasa. A pocas cuadras encontrarás una infinita oferta de turismo de montaña y aventura, mientras que en el famoso Mercado Rodríguez podrás abastecerte de cuanto quieras. Es un lugar cuyos tentáculos se apropian de las calles con sus bolsas a granel y una peculiar mezcla de aromas y colores, atendido en su mayoría por cholitas con sus vestimentas típicas de pollera, sombrero y manta. Otros íconos de la ciudad son el Mercado Lanza y su efervescente vida local, la plaza Mayor de San Francisco y sus alrededores.

Si sobreviviste a la puna y surcaste los mercados locales sin terminar abrazado al sanitario, significa que estás preparado para continuar la aventura. Ya puedes dirigirte a ese lugar que te trajo hasta allá. La Cordillera Real es la más famosa de Bolivia. Si bien hay otras cumbres cautivantes alejadas de La Paz, como el Nevado Sajama, el

options. Located just two hours from La Paz, the trail to Condoriri begins at Rinconada and takes you toward the Andean lake Chiar-Khota.

It is a tranquil route of about one-and-a-halfhours to get to base camp. Everyday dozens of tourists, mountaineers, guides, and mules tread this same path through a beautiful valley toward the foothills of the mountains, appreciating views of some of the giants: the Condoriri, Austria, Pirámide Blanca, Pirámide Negra, and Pequeño Alpamayo.

While the inexperienced mountaineers are instructed on how-to put-on crampons for their first time on a glacier, others prepare their ice screws, stakes, and ropes. The possibilities are endless. Hidden just one hour away is a beautiful frozen waterfall that is the perfect side trip destination as you acclimatize on your first day and practice placing ice screws and climbing at the high elevation.

Pequeño Alpamayo (17,618 feet/ 5,370 meters) is the most visited summit in the valley. To get there, you first have to cross a labyrinth of cracked ice that puts you on the summit of Tarija and at the foot of Pequeño.

From there, you must decide whether to go along the summit ridge or venture along the direct route and its breathtaking 60-degree ice wall. The Pirámide Blanca (17,159 feet/ 5,230 meters) is not as popular but offers equally beautiful scenery, making it another tempting option. If you cross the glacier and ascend past huge crevasses that lead you to its rocky summit, you will be rewarded with an unparalleled panoramic view of the valley.

For more experienced mountaineers, Condoriri (18,530 feet/ 5,648 meters) – which means “condor head” in the indigenous Aymara language – has an endless array of routes with climbs graded from AD (fairly difficult) to TD (very difficult) that pass through snow slopes to technical and exposed stretches of ice and rock. It is a theme park for experienced mountaineers.

Huayna Potosi is another one of the giants in this area. It is the most visited mountain in Bolivia thanks to its high elevation of over 19,000 feet (6000 meters), easy summit access, excellent shelters at its base camp, and great array of guides who guarantee a trip to the summit provided you can handle the altitude sickness. The classic route is literally a direct highway etched into the snow and is relatively simple. But this is only the tourist side of the mountain. The French route is a 60° slope and is about 4,500 feet (1400 meters) long (AD+), while the Western

Grandes cumbres

P

anoramas hay para todos los gustos: desde trekking hasta escalada en hielo, y el sector de Condoriri es el más versátil. Ubicado a escasas dos horas de La Paz se encuentra su acceso en Rinconada, que da inicio al sendero rumbo a la laguna Chiar-Khota. Es una tranquila ruta de hora y media hasta el campo base. Sus huellas son surcadas diaramente por decenas de turistas, montañistas, guías y mulas que se dirigen a los pies de las montañas, en un hermoso valle con vista a un puñado de gigantes: los Condoriri, Austria, Pirámide Blanca, Pirámide Negra y Pequeño Alpamayo.

Mientras los menos experimentados son instruidos acerca de cómo ponerse los crampones para incursionar por primera vez sobre un glaciar, otros preparan sus tornillos, estacas y cuerdas.

Las posibilidades son infinitas. A

apenas una hora de caminata se esconde una bella cascada de hielo, excusa perfecta para aclimatar el primer día y aburrirse de tanto poner tornillos, subir y bajar.

El Pequeño Alpamayo (5.370 metros) figura como el top one visitado de este valle, debiendo cruzar un laberinto de agrietados hielos que te posicionan en la cumbre del cerro Tarija, para luego acceder a los pies del Pequeño y allí tomar la decisión de si surcar el filo somital o aventurarte por la ruta directa y su vertiginosa pared de hielo de 60°. El Pirámide Blanca (5.230 metros), menos frecuentado, pero escénicamente igual de bello, también es una opción tentadora. Cruza el glaciar y luego asciende a través de unos grietones enormes que te dejan en su cumbre rocosa, con una vista panorámica del valle sin parangón.

Para los más experimentados, el Condoriri (5.648 metros) –cabeza de cóndor en aymara- tiene un inagotable abanico de rutas, que van desde las AD -Algo Difícil- hasta las TD -Muy Difícil-, pasando desde palas de nieve

El Huayna Potosí es otro de los gigantes de esta zona. Es la montaña más visitada de Bolivia gracias a su cota sobre los 6.000 y su fácil acceso a la cumbre, con excelentes refugios en su campo base y una gran oferta de guías que aseguran la cima siempre y cuando la puna lo permita. La ruta clásica es literalmente una carretera directo hacia arriba, marcada a fuego en la nieve y de relativa sencillez para estar hablando de un seis mil. Pero esta es solo la faceta turística del cerro. La ruta Francesa es una pala de 60° y 400 metros de largo (AD+), mientras que la ruta Oeste hace gala de una bella pared de 1.000 metros y hasta 70° en hielo y mixto (D+).

El Nevado Illimani, protagonista del relato inicial, es otra de las joyitas que posee esta cordillera, con nada menos que 6.462 metros. Es el telón de fondo de La Paz, dominando la ciudad desde

route boasts a beautiful wall of 3,281 feet (1000 meters) with an incline of up to 70° in ice and mixed climbing conditions (D+).

Nevado Illimani is another one of the jewels of the Cordillera Real. It is the backdrop of La Paz, dominating the city skyline from high above and the foot of the small town of Pinaya. The traditional route to its summit is a difficult one due to its tremendous height, but it is generally not too technical with a grade of PD (slightly difficult). This does vary depending on the quality of the ice and the risks of the cracks, since being a less frequented summit, an obvious path might be hard to spot. Illimani also has a long list of other more technical routes, including one that is very much on my wish list that covers all four of its summits, which are all above 19,000 feet (6000 m).

Rock climbs

L

ike the alpine landscapes, the high-quality rock climbing found here also attracts people to Bolivia. Aranjuez is an area of red conglomerate rock

right in the middle of La Paz, some 30 minutes from the city center. It has routes that range from 5.10a to 5.12d. Here you can wear yourself out by climbing at almost 13,000 feet (4000 meters), an excellent form of active acclimatization.

But for those who want to escape the madness of the city, don’t miss the Quimsa Cruz mountain range, famous for its granite and traditional climbing routes. And I have to also mention the peculiar climbing scene at Peñas, where Father Antonio Zavattarelli, an Italian priest, is himself an avid climber and can offer advice on local climbs at nearby crags of volcanic rock.

Given the high and marvelous peaks within a stone’s throw of La Paz, Bolivia’s mountaineering and climbing potential is limitless. This world-class playground also has well-trained local mountain guides. But Bolivia is also a cultural gold mine with its unique blend of indigenous traditions and modernity. For me, it all adds up to a seductive, addictive cocktail that keeps me coming back year after year.

Y tengo que mencionar también la peculiar escena de escalada en Peñas, donde el padre Antonio Zavattarelli, un sacerdote italiano, es un ávido escalador y puede ofrecer consejos sobre sitios cercanos de escalada en roca volcánica.

El potencial de Bolivia es inagotable, en especial sus altas y maravillosas cumbres a tiro de cañón de La Paz. Es en parte por ello que el turismo de montaña está tan desarrollado, de la mano de la presencia permanente de la UIAGM (Unión Internacional de Asociaciones de Guías de Montaña), que lo ha llevado a niveles de alto profesionalismo. Legends on the river Leyendas en el río

“I see a swift river shine like a knife, divide my Lebu in two halves of fragrance, I listen to it, I smell it, I caress it, I go over it with a childish kiss like back then, when the wind and the rain used to rock me, I feel it like one more artery between my temples and my pillow.”

T

hat is how the poet Gonzalo Rojas evoked, with a twinge of nostalgia, and to the great pride of the Lebulense people, the river which divides their city in two and whose waters seem to move to the rhythm of life in the town. This former winner of Chile’s National Prize for Literature described it, perhaps like no one else could, in the first stanza of his poem “Coal.”

Coal, in fact, was responsible for the rapid expansion of the town at the dawn of the 20th century, which before then had been considered merely an outpost bordering the Mapuche “lafkenche” territory (lafken “sea” and che “person”). Today, the coal mines are closed and the primary commercial activity here is the artisanal fishing industry. The need to reinvent themselves has also paved the

way for an emerging tourism sector with its own local style.

Still, those Mapuche roots remain strong. The “ruka” of the werken (tribal leader), Sergio Millacura, advisor and spokesperson for the Lebu indigenous community, is trying to keep these traditions alive. An artisan and Mapuche proponent, Millacura receives visitors dressed in the town’s traditional clothing: a trarülongko or sash tied around the head, a maküñ or poncho, and a pifülfa or wooden whistle hung around the neck.

The ruka is a type of traditional Mapuche house, usually circular, with wooden posts and beams and only one entrance. Here, visitors can experience up-close the culture and traditions of the Mapuche, get to handle utensils and decorative ornaments, and can also play their typical musical instruments.

It may be just considered an excursion for travellers, but they try to keep faithful to their origins. Before entering the ruka two appeals are made. “We are a dual culture,” Millacura explains. Then he blows on the kull kull, or cow’s horn, which emits a sound similar to that of a trumpet. After this, the werkén might reach to the wenu mapu, to the sky. Everyone present must stand close to the person who is presiding over the ceremony, and never turn their backs to the sun: all ceremonies are carried out facing the sun king. “That is where the energy is,” says our host.

To the simple beats of the kultrun, a ceremonial drum, and from the aerial sounds of the trutruka, we enter a sort of appreciative trance. Millacura dedicates a song to the deities and ancestral founders of the Mapuche village.

Tras ello, el werkén puede dirigirse al wenu mapu, al cielo. Todos los presentes deben pararse cerca de quien preside el rito, y nunca dando la espalda al sol: todas las ceremonias se realizan de cara al astro rey. “Allá está la energía”, dice nuestro anfitrión.

Al ritmo base del kultrun, un tambor ceremonial, y del sonido aéreo de la trutruka, entramos en una especie de trance en modo de agradecimiento. Millacura dedica un canto a los dioses y antepasados creadores del pueblo mapuche.

Once the ritual is over, we enter the ruka, and inside there is a stone hearth that warms the air and boils the water in a large kettle. Close by, two women prepare the dough for the “sopaipillas” which will go with the matetun. It’s a tradition that is common in so many homes throughout southern Chile. Here the mate tea is mixed with medicinal herbs that help digest the foods being prepared.

This is all part of the reinvention that Lebu is experiencing: a retrieval of, or reconnection with, their past. Over the past two years, the efforts and initiatives of the city’s tourism board have been focused on working in collaboration with the native communities in order to allow visitors to live the “Lafkenche experience.” As a result, the former relentless discrimination that the native people once endured has been gradually giving way to a greater appreciation of their ancient culture.

Old remnants of that culture can also be found nearby Lebu.

Eleven miles (18 kms) south of the city, Punta Morhuilla hosts a site of great archaeological value where innumerable items have been salvaged, from pots to

arrowheads, which tell of some of the area’s past history, and the findings are shown to the public at the Morhuilla museum.

Waves and adventure

T

he turnaround in Lebu is also built around their privileged coastal and mountainous geography which provide an ideal setting for outdoor sports like mountain biking and surfing. A day’s activities can easily be split perfectly between the two sports, since the mountains that surround the city virtually merge with the extensive beaches.

Tw o a n d a h a l f m i l e s (4 kms) north of the town square, across the river in the Millaneco area, is Larga beach, a breathtaking scene of untouched beauty. By car you can drive along the beach front and arrive to Benavides cave, a natural rock formation of immense scale. According to local legend it served as a refuge for Vincente Benavides, a Chilean soldier who was a member of the royalists during the Chilean War of Independence. He supposedly hid his treasure here, and the locals say that his ghost still haunts the cave.

Olas y aventura

E

l giro de Lebu también ha intentado aprovechar su privilegiada geografía de costa y cerros, idóneos para la práctica de algunos deportes al aire libre como el mountain bike y el surf.

Un día se puede dividir perfectamente entre ambas actividades, ya que las montañas que rodean la ciudad dan paso inmediatamente a extensas playas.

Cuatro kilómetros al norte de la plaza de Armas, tras cruzar el río se encuentra la playa Larga, en el sector de Millaneco. Su nombre es elocuente: es una playa de dos kilómetros que mantiene su belleza casi inalterada. En auto es posible pasar por ella y llegar hasta la caverna de Benavides. Una formación rocosa natural de grandes dimensiones, de acuerdo a la leyenda local sirvió como refugio a Vicente Benavides, un militar chileno que formó parte del bando realista durante la Guerra de Independencia de Chile, y que allí habría escondido sus tesoros. Los lugareños dicen que su fantasma aún vigila la caverna.

LEBU SURF

Crossing the cave in the dark is quite the challenge and on the far side there is a prize for any who manage to make it, although it has nothing to do with precious stones: instead, it’s Chica beach. This small bay, surrounded by gullies and rocks, is home to perfect waves for surfing.

Jorge Sandoval, a local surfer known as “Koto,” launched Lebu Surf four years ago, a small surfing school located on Larga beach. Sandoval is critical of the current tourism scene in town, although he remains hopeful. “There are few initiatives for [boosting tourism], but I believe Lebu has great tourism potential.

We have white sand beaches, natural caves and incredible waves. I wouldn’t change it for anything,” he says.

Folk stories are plentiful, and another famous legend is that of Bull cave. It is said that the Millaneco beach, which nowadays attracts surfers, was once a hiding place for young and beautiful Mapuche women. A large bull was in

charge of watching over them at all times. But this is where the story gets brutal. One day, a group of men came onto the beach and kidnapped the women. As punishment for not fulfilling his duty, the bull was thus thrown into the sea from the rocks, where you can still hear his incessant roar.

Roy Torres is an expert on the local legends. A Lebu native, he is the owner and founder of Trenkai Tourism, a business which organizes treks and mountain bike trips that take advantage of the Nahuelbuta mountain range.

The standard route that Torres offers starts underneath the statue of the poet Gonzalo Rojas and then dives deep into the forest, in which all of a sudden you come across a small hidden lake; the origin of another legend. It is said to be an outflow from the sea connected by underground channels where the “Cuero” lives, a creature that drags people to the depths of the ocean.

Roy Torres es un experto conocedor de estas leyendas. Oriundo de Lebu, es el dueño y fundador de Turismo Trenkai, empresa que organiza paseos de trekking y mountain bike buscando sacarle partido a las pendientes de la cordillera de Nahuelbuta.

El circuito más básico que ofrece Torres comienza bajo la estatua del poeta Gonzalo Rojas para luego internarse en el bosque, que de pronto sorprende con una pequeña y escondida laguna, origen de otra leyenda. Cuentan que es una salida del mar, con el que se conecta a través de vías subterráneas en las que habita el “Cuero”, ser que arrastra a las personas hasta el fondo del océano.

El recorrido continúa para repasar la historia de otra de las principales actividades económicas de la zona: la industria maderera. La ruta transcurre por un ancho túnel por el que

main economic activity: the logging industr y. Passing through a wide tunnel through which trains carrying wood used to travel, in the distance you can see valleys where old sawmills used to operate.

Then, the thrill meter turns up a few notches: the path turns downhill, narrowing into an exciting descent.

A taste of the sea

R

eineta, sierra and cod are the principal fish caught off the Lebu coast. Small-scale fishermen, with their impressive boats built by the fishermen themselves, are still very much important to the local economy. Their 82-foot

(25 meter) boats are known for being the largest built by artisanal methods in the country, and the proud fishermen invite people to take tours of the local shipyard.

If you want to taste the fruits of their labor, do also check out the nearby Central Market. The fruits and flavors of the sea are a highlight of any visit to Lebu; a city that is trying to reclaim its past glory by reconnecting with its roots, community and ecosystems, with that mighty sea and its tremendous beaches, and those caves full of stories and legends that give them an aura of mystery in every nook and cranny.

Los sabores y frutos del mar son un sello, una impronta de cualquier visita a Lebu, una ciudad que intenta recuperar su pasado glorioso apostando por una reconexión con sus raíces y lo local, con ese mar embravecido de playas inabarcables, con esas cavernas que guardan historias y leyendas que dan un aura de misticismo a cada rincón.

n September 2017, an aerial image of Lake Llanquihue set off alarm bells. Murky water, a large brown stain, spread uncontrollably right along the waterfront in the center of Puerto Varas, which bills itself as the “tourism capital of southern Chile.” And the unappealing image went viral across the nation: one of Chile’s most important lakes, famous for its spectacular vistas that include Osorno volcano towering above its classic blue waters, was being seriously contaminated with untreated sewage.

The following year, government regulators slapped a fine of 400 million pesos on the Los

Lagos Sanitary Services Company (Essal), while in 2019, in a unanimous ruling, the Valdivia Environmental Court found Essal responsible for the environmental damage.

What was initially presented as an isolated event, has today been revealed to be something much more serious. A report from the Harbor Master’s Office shows that 35 incidents occurred in 2017 and 135 in 2018. “The activation of the spillways and the discharge of wastewater or mixed water into Lake Llanquihue has been occurring since at least 2010,” according to the report. “And there is nothing to show that

Lo que en un principio intentó presentarse como un hecho aislado, hoy se ha revelado como algo mucho más serio. To raise awareness and dialogue on possible solutions, Patagon Journal organized a panel in February called “A Sustainable Future for Lake Llanquihue” inviting the local community to meet with experts and activists working on the issue.

The environmental norms are being breached,” said Víctor Durán, founder of the Villarrica-based citizens group Vigilantes, at the panel. He moreover points out that the growth of surrounding towns is partly responsible for the lake’s ecological downturn and eutrophication.

Raffaele Di Biase, president of the Puerto Varas tourism association, told the gathering that he supports the move to declare Lake Llanquihue as a Saturated Zone, although he believes that, “it is not just a problem affecting the lake, but a problem of territorial planning.” Di Biase, like other speakers on the panel, also criticizes the failure of the municipality and other state entities to supervise and prevent the pollution.“The city is lacking in political leadership.”

Lake Villarrica, located in the Araucania region near the popular resort town Pucon, provides some clues as to how to deal with the problem. It was declared a Saturated Zone in 2017, enabling changes to local land-use zoning laws. Yet, says Duran, the designation has not led to any tourism decline, to the contrary.

In the United States, Lake Tahoe provides another model, it faced similar contamination problems two decades ago, and scientists involved in cleaning up and protecting the Californian lake are now providing guidelines and technical expertise through their local partners at the environmental group Chile Lagos Limpios. So far, they are on the ground assisting authorities at Ranco and Panguipulli lakes and aim to step up involvement at Lake Llanquihue in the near future.

“The government can use a decontamination plan as a tool to impose stricter regulations on the industries that dispose their waste into the lake,” said Javier Trivelli, executive director of Geute Conservación Sur. Trivelli’s organization seeks to introduce monitoring programs to understand how current land-use patterns are affecting Lake Llanquihue together with new, more effective public policies.

Record heatwave in Antarctica Ola de calor provoca temperaturas récord de más de 20°C en la Antártica

ebruary was a hot month for Antarctica. On February 7, thermometers read 65°F at the Argentine research base Esperanza, the highest temperature on record according to the Argentine National Meteorological Service. Just two days later, on the nearby island of Seymour, located off the tip of the continent’s western peninsula and directly across from the southernmost point of South America, the temperature reached a record 68°F. The data has generated concern among scientists.

“We’ve never seen temperatures this high in Antarctica,” Brazilian researcher Carlos Schaefer told the Associated Press. “The reading of 68° is unprecedented, it’s alarming, and it shows that something is happening,” added Heitor Evangelista of the Biophysics and Biometrics Department of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). He reminds us, however, that Antarctica reached its highest temperatures more than 120,000 years

ago during the last interglacial period when the sea level reached nine meters above its current level.

A study recently published

by Australian researchers in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Scientists (PNAS) establishes an unsettling parallel between current trends and that era of historic melting; they calculate that at that time, the western peninsula’s ice-which depends directly on the seafloor-- melted early during the heat cycle.

It’s estimated that Antarctic melting could cause a global sea level rise of up to 22.8 inches by the end of the century if the rate of greenhouse gas emissions continues unaltered, thereby increasing the risk of flooding for many inhabited coastal areas.

The inhabitants of Antarctica are already suffering the consequences: almost all chicks from one of the largest emperor penguin colonies have died due to their habitat having melted during the last three years.

Recientemente un estudio publicado por investigadores australianos en la revista PNAS establece un paralelo inquietante con ese periodo; calcularon que en ese entonces los hielos de la península occidental de la Antártica -que dependen directamente del fondo del mar- se fundieron tempranamente durante el ciclo de calentamiento.

Se estima que el derretimiento de la Antártica podría provocar un aumento global del nivel del mar de hasta 58 centímetros para finales de siglo si el ritmo global de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero se mantiene inalterable, por lo que de seguir así aumentará el riesgo de inundación para las zonas costeras habitadas.

hile’s National Congress approved a bill on June 24 calling for the Selk’nam people to be listed among the indigenous ethnic groups formally recognized by the Chilean government. The Corporación Selk’nam Chile, formed in 2015, has led a campaign for recognition and is also engaged in a larger initiative to bring together families of descendants across generations and boundaries to share stories and ancestral knowledge.

Also known as the “Onas,” the Selk’nam were victims of a colonial genocide. In 1885, Europeans occupied the Karokynka territory (Tierra del Fuego). As they pursued sheep ranching and gold mining across the island, the

foreign colonizers clashed with the natives, killing them and driving them into the mountains or to settle near the Salesian religious missions in the far south. Just 20 years after the arrival of the white man, the Selk’nam had been almost completely wiped out, pushed to the brink too by tuberculosis, influenza, pneumonia, measles, scarlet fever and venereal disease. Ever since, surviving generations of Selk’nam have lived with a “stigma of extinction.”

In Argentina, the Selk’nam gained government recognition in 1995. Chile’s 1993 Indigenous Law currently recognizes nine other indigenous groups. The Selk’nam bill faces a vote in the Senate in July.

La Corporación Selk’nam Chile, formada en 2015, ha liderado una campaña de reconocimiento y también participa en una iniciativa más amplia para reunir a familias de descendientes de diferentes generaciones y fronteras para compartir historias y conocimientos ancestrales.

También conocidos como onas, los selk’nam fueron víctimas de un genocidio colonial. En 1885, los europeos ocuparon el territorio de Karokynka (Tierra del Fuego). Mientras buscaban criar ovejas y extraer oro en toda la isla, los colonizadores extranjeros se enfrentaron con los nativos, los

En Argentina, los selk’nam ganaron el reconocimiento del gobierno en 1995. La Ley Indígena de Chile de 1993 actualmente reconoce a otros nueve grupos indígenas. El proyecto de ley para reconocer a los selk’nam enfrenta una votación en el Senado en julio.

Pandemic pushes back “Earth Overshoot Day” La pandemia retrasa el “Día del Sobregiro de la Tierra”

he global pandemic does have a positive side: this year, Earth Overshoot Day is projected to be August 22 – three weeks later than last year. The date, calculated each year by the Global Footprint Network, reflects when humanity surpasses the amount of natural resources the Earth is capable of renewing within a given year. This year, the worldwide coronavirus-related lockdown has led to dramatic reductions in carbon emissions and wood harvests.

Still, the world population currently uses about 60 percent more resources than the planet can renew in a year, according to the green group. In other words, we would need 1.6 planets to sustain our current resource consumption. While the coronavirus appears to have its green benefits, Global Footprint Network CEO Laurel Hanscom says the world must not ignore “the social, economic, and political tensions which have been exacerbated by this global disaster.”

ne of the most important wetlands for shorebirds in the Southern Hemisphere, and one of the last wintering concentration areas of migratory species in South America, Chile declared Bahia Lomas in April 2020 an official nature sanctuary. Located on the Strait of Magellan, on the Chilean side of Tierra del Fuego, it is a coastal marine wetland with a beach and extensive intertidal plains of sand and mud, encompassing altogether 145,659 acres (58,946 hectares) of bird habitat.

Chile has thus paid off a debt to an ecosystem that for years had sought some level of legal protection by the country: as early as 2004, Bahía Lomas was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, while in 2009 it was listed as a “hemispheric reserve” by the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network.

Among the migratory shorebirds stands out the Red knot (Calidris canutus), a tireless traveler who every winter journeys more than 9,000 miles (15,000 kms) from the Northern Hemisphere to the southern tip of South America.

It is estimated that Bahía Lomas hosts more than half of the worldwide population of this species. The wetland is also home to nearly 60 percent of the Hudsonian godwit (Limosa haemastica) population of the Atlantic coast, as well as other species such as the Whiterumped sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis); Magellanic plover (Pluvianellus socialis); Magel-

lanic oystercatcher (Haematopus leucopodus); Two-banded plover (Charadrius falklandicus); and Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus).

But beyond the avifauna, Bahia Lomas is also an ecosystem of unique characteristics due to the frequency of beaching, or stranding, (because of the rapid decline of the tide) of cetaceans along its beaches. Moreover, rare archaeological sites of the Selk’nam indigenous people are found here.

The sanctuary will be managed by the Bahia Lomas Conservation and Management Center Corporation of Santo Tomás University. Although this designation is part of Chile’s 2018–2022 National Plan for Wetlands Protection, regions such as Coquimbo, Biobío and Araucanía still have less than five percent of their wetlands areas protected.

Dentro de las aves playeras migratorias destaca el playero ártico (Calidris canutus), un viajero incansable que recorre cada invierno boreal una ruta de más de 15 mil kilómetros desde el Hemisferio Norte hasta el extremo austral de Sudamérica. Se estima que Bahía Lomas concentra poco más del 50% de la población de esta especie. El humedal alberga también a casi el 60% de la población de zarapito de pico recto (Limosa haemastica) de la costa Atlántica, además de otras especies como el playero de lomo blanco (Calidris fuscicollis); chorlo de Magallanes (Pluvianellus socialis); pilpilén austral (Haematopus leucopodus); chorlo de doble collar (Charadrius falklandicus); y halcón peregrino (Falco peregrinus).

Pero más allá de la avifauna, Bahía Lomas es también un ecosistema de características únicas debido al varamiento – producto del rápido descenso de la marea – de cetáceos, y la importancia que tenía para el pueblo selk’nam de acuerdo a los sitios arqueológicos hallados.

El santuario quedará bajo administración de la Corporación Centro de Conservación y Manejo Bahía Lomas de la Universidad Santo Tomás. Si bien esta designación forma parte del Plan Nacional de Protección de Humedales 2018 – 2022 elaborado por el gobierno de Chile, regiones como las de Coquimbo, Biobío y la Araucanía todavía cuentan con menos del cinco por ciento de la superficie de sus humedales protegida.

La Trochita: El Viejo Expreso Patagónico cumple 75 años

n May 25, 1945, the Old Patagonian Express began its maiden voyage, connecting the 250 miles (402 kms) and more than 600 curves that separate the towns of Ingeniero Jacobacci, in Río Negro province, and Esquel, in the Chubut province of Argentine Patagonia. Working under the harsh weather conditions of the area, the railroad took 23 years to build. The train route was linked to an ambitious project of the early 20th century that had sought to expand Argentina’s railway network throughout Patagonia, but which was never completed in its entirety.

Also known as "La Trochita,” this nickname comes from the narrow size of the track – 2.5 feet (75 cms) wide – a cost saving measure to lower engineering and maintenance expenses. The first five years the train was used to transport cargo, mainly leather, wool and wood, but in 1950 it also became an important means of transportation for the people living along the route and an icon for the entire region after it was popularized internationally by famed travel writer Paul

Theroux in his novel The Old Patagonian Express.

But improvements to roads and the proliferation of buses and trucks eventually caused a decline in railway use in Argentina, and "La Trochita" was no exception. In 1993, the government decided to close the railroad line, but the provinces of Río Negro and Chubut, in an initiative to preserve their cultural identity, prevented its demise by re-orienting the historic train toward tourism.

Seeking to adapt to current environmental standards, the locomotive originally was fueled by coal but was later converted to run on oil and gas. Today, after celebrating 75 years of service, "La Trochita" continues to cross the Patagonian steppes and mountains with two round trip tours: between El Maitén and Desvío Bruno Thomae, and between Esquel and Nahuel Pan. A third option is to hire a charter between Esquel and El Maitén or Jacobacci Engineer.

More than looking at a slice of history, it's like traveling back in time on rails.

l 25 de mayo de 1945 inició su primer viaje el Viejo Expreso Patagónico, uniendo los 402 kilómetros y más de 600 curvas que separan las localidades de Ingeniero Jacobacci, en la provincia de Río Negro, y Esquel, en la provincia de Chubut, en la Patagonia argentina. Haciendo frente a las duras condiciones climáticas de la zona, el ferrocarril tardó 23 años en construirse.

El origen de este ramal estuvo ligado a un proyecto ambicioso de principios del siglo XX que pretendía expandir la red ferroviaria argentina por toda la Patagonia, lo que nunca se terminó de concretar en su totalidad.

Conocido también como “La Trochita”, su apodo surge de la distancia en que se encuentran los rieles -75 centímetros de ancho-, lo que permitió ahorrar costos en ingeniería y mantenimiento. Los primeros cinco años se utilizó para transportar carga, principalmente cueros, lana y madera, pero en 1950 se convirtió en un medio de transporte fundamental para los pueblos del trazado y en un emblema de toda la región después de que fuera popularizado internacionalmente por el famoso

escritor de viajes Paul Theroux en su novela El Viejo Expreso Patagónico.

Pero la mejora de las carreteras y la proliferación de buses y camiones pusieron en jaque a los ferrocarriles de toda Argentina, y “La Trochita” no fue la excepción. En 1993 el gobierno decidió clausurar el ramal, aunque las provincias de Río Negro y Chubut se unieron y apostaron por mantener viva parte de su identidad impidiendo su desaparición, revalorizando este patrimonio histórico gracias al turismo.

Buscando adaptarse a los estándares ambientales actuales, la locomotora originalmente impulsada a carbón se reconvirtió para emplear gas oil. Hoy, tras festejar 75 años de vida, “La Trochita” sigue cruzando estepas y montañas patagónicas con dos recorridos turísticos de ida y vuelta: entre El Maitén y el Desvío Ingeniero Bruno Thomae, y entre Esquel y Nahuel Pan. Una tercera opción es contratar un chárter entre Esquel y El Maitén o Ingeniero Jacobacci. Más que un rescate a la memoria, es un viaje en el tiempo sobre rieles.

aw, untouched, remote. Those are rare terms when referring to mountain environments in today’s world, and yet fitting when describing the skiing at Cerro Castillo. This national park in Chile’s Aysen region crowned by a 7,605-foot peak of the same name is a special place for experiencing backcountry skiing at its finest.

A few years ago, the South American Freeride World Tour Qualifiers was held at Cerro Castillo and participants had to ascend for an hour or more among the intense terrain of cornices, chutes,

and forests. There are no lifts or snowmobiles here, just human-powered transportation. But there are some advantages to ski touring among this park’s magnificent nature bonanza: ski areas can be reached by car. You can literally put your skins on right after turning off your car and begin your adventure.

Skill level is always a big question when it comes to undeveloped and lesser known ski areas like this one. At Cerro Castillo – since the skiing areas are so spread out and filled with a multitude of possibilities like steeps, open bowls and couloirs – anyone from professional to intermediate skiers can feasibly get in some turns. Still, be smart. If traveling without a guide and you’re unfamiliar with the territory, it’s a good idea to plan on just doing day trips. The weather in Patagonia, and especially at Cerro Castillo, can be extremely temperamental. The unpredictable climate can result in quick-changing avalanche conditions that fluctuate between constant warming and cooling, as well as lots of wind loading, and for some backcountry skiers these things may be tricky to spot.

On the flipside, overnight expeditions for two or three days are a great option if you have an experienced guide. And extended expeditions give you the most opportunity to experience the heart and soul of a place. Jorge Kozulj, 44, who owns Andescross, a personalized mountain guide com-

pany based out of Bariloche, says be prepared for the ski trip of a lifetime. During these longer expeditions he says you have the time and, if the weather aligns, the opportunity to access Chamonix-style lines throughout the Cerro Castillo circuit. After skinning for anywhere between three and six hours you can set up camp on the west side of the circuit, allowing for amazing skiing at Cerro Castillo, Cerro Pinon and many others.

If you do opt for a longer, overnight trip, make sure you have the right gear. In addition to the standard fare needed for touring in the backcountry, like a beacon, shovel and probe, bring with you an ice axe, crampons, rope and harness. Your winter camping gear and a surplus of carbs should all be stuffed into, at minimum, a 40-liter ski backpack.

Someone who knows what a hardcore Cerro Castillo expedition is like is Raimundo De Andraca. One of Chile’s top

alpine skiers, Andraca, 27, is especially known for excelling at first ski descents on wildly steep and rugged terrain. He counts among his jaw dropping conquests, for example, the southeast face of the Cerro San Francisco glacier at Cajon del Maipo near Santiago. In October 2017, alongside Vincente Sutil and Sebastian Rojas, he did an extremely technical line on the south face of Cerro Castillo that arguably eclipsed 60-degrees.

That alone is prime evidence of how crazy the skiing can get at Cerro Castillo if that is what you’re after.

Recently, when speaking with Raimundo I wanted to get a feel for what the skiing terrain is like in this part of Patagonia: “I’ve gone for several years to the mountains of Cerro Castillo and there is always something new to do,” he told me. “The potential for skiing is gigantic there. It is a very special destination in Patagonia for any type of skiing.

avalanches is much higher, so it’s recommended to get to the mountains early (in the day).”

When he says early, what he really means is man y hours before sunrise. During Raimundo’s descent of the hair-raising 60-degree line his start time was 4 a.m.

In the Foothills of a Giant En las faldas de un gigante

atagonia is known throughout the world for its unstable and occasionally hostile climate, and the weather threatened to prove why on this particular day. We were on our way to San Lorenzo Ranch, where we were hoping to get our first face-to-face look at the mountain for which the ranch was named, but the clouds, gray and increasingly thick, were beginning to shroud the entire scene in suspense.

Hoping the weather would improve, we started the hike from the house of Luis Soto and his family, located about an hour and a half southeast of Cochrane in Chilean Patagonia. The path slowly, almost imperceptibly, rose in altitude as it crossed open farming and ranching lands dotted here and there with bushes and trees. Up to that point, there was nothing to suggest that we were at the foot of a giant. It just looked like any other trail.

Con la esperanza de que el tiempo mejorara, iniciamos la caminata desde la casa de don Luis Soto y su familia, distante a una hora y media en auto hacia el sureste de Cochrane, en la Patagonia chilena. El sendero va lenta y casi imperceptiblemente ganando altura, atravesando terrenos abiertos de uso agrícola y ganadero, salpicados por algunos manchones de arbustos y árboles. Hasta ahí, nada hace pensar que nos encontramos a los pies de un gigante. Simple-

But then, suddenly, the San Lorenzo Estuary changes course and the slope-- not to mention the demand placed on hikers-increases. Soon the watercourse enters a canyon and the route proceeds parallel to it, entering a forest of lenga and ñire trees.

With my heart beating fast, I stop in a clearing in the middle of the trail, looking up and hoping to catch a glimpse of the master of this landscape, but it is in vain; the clouds barely leave visible part of the ice hanging from this Patagonian colossus.

A few initial raindrops warning of imminent rain force us to quicken our steps as the water seeps through the thick foliage of the forest.

And so, longing for some place dry and warm, we arrive at Agostini Camp. The site honors the Salesian priest Alberto María de Agostini, a devoted explorer and mountaineer of Patagonia who, after spending years exploring the far and unspoiled reaches of that region, fulfilled an early desire from that very spot: in December 1943, he set foot on the main peak of this 3,706 meter giant, the second-highest peak in Patagonia, after San Valentín. Heaps of worn logs and boards from the original shelter remain today, giving silent testimony to those who came after Father de Agostini. At first glance, it looks more like a wood pile prepared for a campfire that could burn for days.

But beyond this romanticism, a few steps past those relics, there stands a real shelter, a truly luxurious refuge in the middle of that solitary mountain, lost to the east of the Patagonian Andes and marking the border not only between Chile and Argentina, but also between dense forests and vast pampas.

stove surrounded by benches quickly brought us together. On the second floor, a large loft illuminated only by small windows serves as a bedroom, a simple yet practical place to get into our sleeping bags.

The shelter bears the name of Toni Rohrer, a Swiss mountaineer and friend of Luis Soto who lost his life climbing Mount San Lorenzo. Inside, there are some historical documents, books, maps, photographs, and flags of the rope teams that have been drawn here from all over the world. Some have left plaques that hang from the wall, recording and celebrating their climb; others, who never returned to tell the tale, have small and simple tributes hanging in their memory.

Face to face

he next morning, the clouds looked like they wanted to offer respite so we walked close to an hour, now far from the forest, before beginning to climb near the foot of the giant. In a harsh and unfriendly moraine between two milky-water lagoons, we patiently waited for our moment. The icy, glacial wind tried to break us, but we

Con el corazón palpitando ante un claro en medio del sendero con la vista despejada hacia el horizonte, busco infructuosamente al dueño de estos parajes, pero no hay caso: las nubes apenas dejan entrever parte de los hielos que se descuelgan desde este coloso patagón. Las primeras gotas anuncian una lluvia inminente, y al poco rato nos vimos apurando el tranco mientras el agua se colaba por entre el profuso follaje del bosque.

Y así, deseando un lugar seco y cálido, llegamos al campamento de Agostini. El sitio hace honor al sacerdote salesiano Alberto María de Agostini, devoto explorador-montañista de la Patagonia que desde allí cumplió un viejo anhelo tras varios años recorriendo rincones inmaculados de la región: en diciembre de 1943 pisó la cumbre principal de este gigante de 3706 metros, la

segunda cima patagónica más alta tras el monte San Valentín.

Del refugio original hoy persiste un montón de desgastados tablones y troncos, antiguos testigos mudos de los que vinieron después que el padre de Agostini. A simple vista más parece una gran ruma perfectamente acomodada, un fogón que bien podría arder por días.

Pero más allá del romanticismo, a escasos pasos de aquellos vestigios se erige un refugio real, un verdadero lujo en medio de aquella montaña solitaria, perdida hacia el este de los Andes Patagónicos, marcando no solo la frontera entre Chile y Argentina, sino que también la de los bosques densos y las pampas inabarcables. Una cabaña de dos niveles, el primero está conformado por un comedor y la cocina, cuya cocina a leña pronto nos reunió a todos a su alrededor gracias a las bancas pensadas justamente para ello.

Arriba, una amplia explanada iluminada apenas por unas pequeñas ventanas sirve de dormitorio; un sitio simple pero práctico donde meterte dentro del saco de dormir.

remained, enthralled by the immensity of the colossus. Slowly, as if it were performing a ritual, San Lorenzo started shedding its veil. Turrets and stone crests dusted with snow began appearing through the clouds until the moment when, shining and bright, the mushrooms of ice at the summit gave us a wink. We were insignificant before such magnitude. Mount San Lorenzo, unfathomable in its immensity, forces you to lift your head and then traps your gaze.

Freeing ourselves from the spell, we headed back to the shelter, turning around every so often, almost as a sign of respect. The sky, now intensely blue and deep, contrasted against the icy peak and against

delicate ice formations that are tirelessly felled by high-altitude winds. This pattern results in the ongoing creation of wild and intricate figures.

But the dimensions of San Lorenzo are so great that one need not venture far from the shelter to contemplate this mass of rock and ice in all its splendor. Just steps from the cabin, in the middle of a forest clearing, a strategically placed bench invites visitors to sit for minutes or hours, with a lost gaze, looking at the mountain framed by the foliage of the surrounding trees. It may be the same frame which de Agostini, in the middle of the 20th century, looked through as he stood there at the foot of the giant.

En su interior hay algunos documentos históricos, libros, mapas, fotografías y banderas de las cordadas que han sido atraídas hasta aquí desde diversos puntos del planeta. Algunos han dejado placas que cuelgan de la pared a modo de registro y festejo por su cumbre; otros, que no volvieron para contarlo, tienen colgados allí pequeños y sencillos homenajes en su memoria.

Cara a cara

la mañana siguiente, las nubes parecían querer dar una tregua, y caminamos cerca de una hora para montarnos en las faldas del gigante, ya lejos del bosque. En una áspera y poco amistosa morrena entre dos lagunas de aguas lechosas, nos acomodamos, pacientemente, a esperar nuestro momento. El viento gélido, glaciar, intentaba

doblegarnos, pero permanecimos, absortos ante la inmensidad del coloso. Lentamente, como si de un ritual se tratase, el San Lorenzo fue despojándose de su velo. Unos torreones y unas cuchillas pétreas empolvadas con nieve comenzaron a asomarse por entre las nubes, hasta el instante en que, relucientes y fulgurantes, los hongos de hielo de la cima nos hicieron un giño. Éramos insignificantes frente a tal magnitud. El San Lorenzo, inconmensurable, te obliga a levantar la cabeza, y luego atrapa tu mirada.

Sacudiéndonos del hechizo, volvimos al refugio volteándonos cada cierto rato, casi en señal de respeto. El cielo, ahora de un azul intenso y profundo, contrastaba con los hielos cumbreros, pero sobre todo con las estelas de hielo que se desprenden infatigablemente a causa del viento que sopla a esas alturas. Surgen así figuras y formas intrincadas, salvajes, moldeadas sin descanso.

Pero la dimensión que abarca el San Lorenzo es tan colosal que ni siquiera es necesario alejarse mucho del refugio para contemplar esta mole de roca y hielo en todo su esplendor. A pasos de la cabaña, en medio de un claro del bosque, una banca estratégicamente instalada invita a permanecer minutos, horas, con la vista perdida en la montaña, enmarcada por el follaje de los árboles. Quizá sea el mismo encuadre que a mediados del siglo XX tuviera de Agostini, justo ahí, en las faldas del gigante.

HOW TO GO / CÓMO IR The best time to do this trek is from October to April. Including roundtrip to get here by car or bus, plan for at least three days.

The hike is about 4 hours, or 5.6 miles (9 kms), between Don Luis’ home and Agostini camp, and from the camp to the lookout of Mount San Lorenzo it takes just under an hour. Camping or using the Tony Rohrer shelter costs $3,000 Chilean pesos per person.

En el mundo de hoy, los datos de calidad del agua son una herramienta esencial para comprender y predecir las innumerables formas en las que el clima, que cambia rápidamente, afecta nuestro recurso más valioso: el agua.

En cuencas prístinas que se enfrentan a un rápido desarrollo como la del Futaleufú en la Región de Los Lagos, Chile, la necesidad de establecer un programa de monitoreo del agua es aún más urgente.

Sin embargo, en Chile, y en la Patagonia en particular, muy pocos ríos son monitoreados de manera confiable. El monitoreo por parte de las agencias gubernamentales es inconsistente en el mejor de los casos, y los datos, cuando se recopilan, son difíciles de localizar. Entonces, en ausencia de entidades confiables de monitoreo gubernamental o académico, ¿qué otras opciones existen?

when collected, is difficult to locate. So, in the absence of reliable governmental or academic monitoring entities, what other options exist?

Community-based water quality monitoring is an accessible, low-cost monitoring model that educates and empowers the community, helping to democratize water management. Through this citizen science model, local volunteers are trained in water sampling methods and provided with necessary equipment. After their training, volunteer monitors are responsible for taking consistent samples from a specific, predetermined site.

Spread strategically around a watershed — for example, choosing sites both upstream and downstream of a suspected contaminator — these data can form a complete picture of the evolving health of a river or other body of water.

One of the most attractive aspects of a community-based model is its accessibility, both in terms of cost and lack of necessity for trained professionals. Arguably, however, the

greatest benefit of a community-based model is the human engagement factor. As volunteer monitors, members of the community are engaged in the process of collecting and analyzing data. They are educated about and alert to changes in river behavior, and the factors driving these changes. Placing this data in the hands of the people is a step toward democratizing water management. As the only country in the world with fully privatized water rights, keeping citizens engaged and informed about the health of their rivers is especially important in Chile.

Monitoring in Futaleufú

he town of Futaleufú in southern Chile is best known for its namesake Futaleufú River, which hosts some of the best whitewater for rafting and kayaking in the world.

Lesser known is the Espolón River. The largest tributary to the Futaleufú on the Chilean side of the river, it runs through the town and is in many ways the river of the townspeople.

es to swim and fish, and its friendly whitewater provides the perfect training grounds for beginner and experienced kayakers alike. Unfortunately, its proximity to the town has also made it the victim of human development; the upper reaches of the Espolón have been deeply scarred by gravel extraction, periodic overflow from the local wastewater treatment facility has contaminated its waters, and construction and urban development are quickly blossoming along its banks.

Moreover, the recent arrival of invasive didymo algae has coated its bed in a thick, slimy brown layer, obscuring its usual vibrant turquoise color and affecting its ecosystem in ways not yet fully understood.

In order to track the effects of development on the Espolón and hold developers accountable, this summer Futaleufú Riverkeeper established Patagonia’s first community-based water quality monitoring program. We paired with Global Water Watch, an organization that has helped to develop community-based programs across the globe, to purchase monitoring kits and host a week-long training workshop for volunteer monitors. During the workshop, we certified 17 new volunteer monitors from the local community in physicalchemical and bacteriological sampling methods.

The goal of the program is to establish a baseline of water quality data and become the first line of defense in detecting and identifying emerging water quality issues. The program is a vital tool for the future management of our waterways, helping us to identify polluters and push positive environmental policy regarding land and water use.

In this first phase we are monitoring physical-chemical aspects of the water such as pH, alkalinity, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen, as well as bacteriological analysis. In future stages we hope to incorporate monitoring of bio indicators, such as macroinvertebrates, birds and amphibians.

Alongside the collection of data, we are working to build a strong educational element of the program to communicate the importance of conserving our rivers and staying alert to threats to them. Data will be summarized in annual reports and presented to the community, and, before the outbreak

Junto con la recopilación de datos, estamos trabajando en la construcción de un fuerte elemento educativo del programa para comunicar la importancia de conservar nuestros ríos y estar alerta ante las amenazas que éstos enfrentan. Los datos se resumirán en informes anuales y se presentarán a la comunidad, y, antes del brote de COVID-19, estábamos trabajando con la Escuela de Futaleufú para incluir el programa en las clases de ciencias.

También esperamos ampliar el alcance del programa más allá de las fronteras nacionales. of Covid-19, we were working with teachers to partner with local science classes.

We also hope to expand the reach of the program beyond national boundaries into Argentina. Futaleufú is a binational watershed: the Futaleufú River flows from the Amutui Quimey Reservoir in Argentina, a huge artificial lake created by the Futaleufú dam. Several other rivers join the Futaleufú — known in Argentina as the Rio Grande — on its path through the Andes to Chile, including the Percy River.

The “Volunteers for the Percy River” are a group of river enthusiasts who do cleanup campaigns and river-related environmental education. They also measure water quality using the Global Water Watch methodology. We envision a binational water monitoring plan for the future of the Futaleufú basin, which will allow us not only to detect emerging situations but open the door for more comprehensive water management at the watershed level.

Science, community and river conservation

L

uckily for us, water sampling is an inherently socially

distanced activity, and the program has thus far been able to continue normally under the COVID-19 pandemic. We have been inspired by the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteer monitors, upon whom the success of the program depends.

An active and engaged community that keeps its eyes and ears on the river can quickly catch pollution and other threats and take effective actions to address those issues.

Best of all, our program helps to reinforce the socio-environmental fabric of Futaleufú. Our current volunteers represent a broad spectrum of the community: they are teachers and doctors, public officials and tourism entrepreneurs, housewives and construction workers, who are all united by a mutual concern for the environment. By bringing these people together and arming them with the necessary tools and knowledge, we strengthen their bonds to their community and to their rivers.

Cleaning the Air, Greening Chile’s Recovery Limpiando el aire: haciendo más verde la recuperación de Chile

ir pollution is a permanent and underestimated threat to the wellbeing of people.

It kills 7 million people a year, mostly from lower income communities. And those who are impacted most are those who have least contributed to the problem.

In Chile, starting in 2012 a new and more stringent air pollution regulation came online, the PM2.5 standard, which was adopted mirroring the European Union (EU) standard. Once measurements started to come in, we saw that nearly 90 percent of our population exceeds this standard. We learned that Chile was home to some of the dirtiest air in Latin America, and that places like Coyhaique have the worst air on the South American continent.

In 2014, I worked in developing the air quality management plan for Chile, which the environmental minister Pablo Badenier launched with President Bachelet and the public health minister Helia Molina.

We took immediate measures to reduce pollution, such as banning wood burning stoves in multiple cities where the air was bad.These measures have continued to this day. Pollution has dropped substantially in many cities. And the reduction of respiratory disease has been huge. In the cities where we have air regulations emergency room visits have dropped 17 percent in comparison to a 7 percent increase in cities which don’t. This is even higher for children under the age of 4, with their visits due to bronchial obstruction plummeting by 75 percent. In 2019, we witnessed nearly half a millionemergency room visits less per year, of which 80 percent have been children less than 14-yearsold. Indeed, our actions have benefited our kids the most.

Yet, we are far from done.

Many cities in Chile suffer some 150 bad air days each winter. We need to increase our programs substantially. We have committed to changing out 190,000

En Chile, a partir de 2012 se puso en marcha una nueva y más estricta regulación de la contaminación del aire, el estándar PM2.5, que se adoptó reflejando el estándar de la Unión Europea (UE). Una vez que las mediciones comenzaron a llegar, vimos que casi el 90 por ciento de nuestra población supera este estándar.

Aprendimos que Chile era el hogar de algunos de los aires más sucios de América Latina, y que lugares como Coyhaique tienen el peor aire de Sudamérica.

En 2014, trabajé en el desarrollo del plan de gestión de la calidad del aire para Chile, que el ministro de medio ambiente, Pablo Badenier, lanzó con la pre-

sidenta Michelle Bachelet y la ministra de salud pública, Helia Molina. Tomamos medidas inmediatas para reducir la contaminación, como prohibir las estufas de leña en varias ciudades donde el aire era malo. Estas medidas han continuado hasta hoy. La contaminación ha disminuido sustancialmente en muchas ciudades. Y la reducción de las enfermedades respiratorias ha sido enorme. En las ciudades donde tenemos regulaciones del aire, las visitas a la sala de emergencias han caído un 17 por ciento, en comparación con un aumento del 7 por ciento en las ciudades que no cuentan con dicha regulación. Esto es aún mayor para los niños menores de 4 años, y sus visitas debido a la obstrucción bronquial han caído en un 75 por ciento. The green recovery provides a new opportunity to address air pollution. If we raise our target to changing out 50,000 stoves and thereby retrofit 50,000 homes per year, we can create 100,000 jobs per year. We can vitalize a con-

We must therefore heed the warn-

Además debemos considerar que estamos en una crisis sanitaria relacionada con nuestra desequilibrada relación con el medio ambiente. También nos dirigimos hacia una crisis climática previsible y evitable. El consenso es que un objetivo de cero emisiones netas es alcanzable, y rentable. Debemos prestar atención a la advertencia y cambiar de rumbo, invirtiendo en el futuro de nuestros hijos protegiéndolos de la amenaza actual de la contaminación del aire. Tenemos la evidencia; tenemos la experiencia. Necesitamos hacer más, y mucho más rápido.

Tenemos que tomar una decisión. Podemos continuar por un camino que sabemos que conducirá a la devastación y al sufrimiento, o en su lugar, pensar en el futuro, dar la vuelta, y tomar el camino de la sustentabilidad adoptando una nueva identidad como los costarricenses lo han hecho tan bien. Pura Vida, dicen ellos. Aire limpio, es el camino.

t strengthens the immune system, may protect the heart, and it’s a natural antiinflammatory and analgesic.

These are just some of the many benefits that can be had by consuming Aristotelia chilensis, or maqui. This fruit could be considered a relative of the calafate and blueberry, but its nutritional properties have nothing to envy of these better known berries. In fact, scientists have found that maqui has the highest antioxidant content of any berry in the world.

Long before health food junkies dubbed it a “superfood,” the maqui was harvested by the indigenous Mapuche people from a tree of the same name, which can reach 5 meters high and grows mainly in the Valdivian temperate rainforests of southern Chile and Argentina, but in Chile it is also found as far north as the Coquimbo region. Perhaps its most attractive feature is the deep blue color of this small berry (between 5 and 6 mm), which is due to the presence of anthocyanins, the pigments responsible for many of its incredible health benefits.

The economic potential for maqui appears to be huge: Chilealimentos, a national food business association in Chile, estimates there is a US$700 million global market for maqui exports from the country. Yet, the country currently only exports close to $3 million in maqui products, with the largest maqui plantations in the O’Higgins region in central Chile. On Chiloe Island, American expatriate Britt Lewis founded Isla Natura in 2010 and is taking a different production route. Gaining organic certification early on, they collect the berries in the wild, providing income for local Chilotes at the same time.

Says Lewis: “The idea was to generate the production of a fruit that was only eaten by local fauna or which was used in fertilizing the earth; we wanted to save these powerful berries as well as contribute to the environment by picking them wild.”

For now, the best place to find and enjoy the healthful benefits of maqui powder, jam, cereal bars and diverse other products made from the berries is close to the source in Patagonia.

En la isla de Chiloé, el estadounidense Britt Lewis fundó la empresa Isla Natura en 2010 y está tomando una ruta de producción diferente. El primer negocio de alimentos en Chile en obtener certificación orgánica, recogen las bayas en la naturaleza, proporcionando ingresos para los locales chilotes al mismo tiempo. Dice Lewis: “La idea era generar la producción de una fruta que sólo era consumida por la fauna local o que se utilizaba para fertilizar la tierra; queríamos salvar estas poderosas bayas, y contribuir al medio ambiente al recogerlas silvestres”.

Por ahora, el mejor lugar para encontrar y disfrutar de los beneficios saludables del polvo de maqui, mermelada, barras de cereales y otros diversos productos elaborados a partir de estas bayas está cerca de la fuente en la Patagonia.

1st PLACE: The winners of the 4 categories will receive a gift certificate of approx. 300 dollars for use in the Patagonia stores of Chile. Also, a pair of large-format photo books from Tompkins Conservation (Yendegaia National Park and Corcovado National Park) and the complete collection of magazines published by Patagon Journal (22 issues).

2do PREMIO: Los ganadores del segundo lugar en las 4 categorías recibirán anteojos de sol de alta calidad hechos por Karün, elaborados a partir de materiales plásticos reciclados recogidos del océano.

2nd PLACE: The winners of second place in the 4 categories will receive a pair of high-quality sunglasses made by Karun that have been produced from recycled plastic materials gathered from the ocean.

PREMIO DE LOS LECTORES: El público elegirá su foto favorita, y el ganador recibirá un viaje de 2 días para 2 personas en las islas de Chiloé, donde podrá practicar kayak y trekking con el tour operador Chiloé Natural, junto con una estadía de 2 noches en el Centro de Ocio, un hotel de 5 estrellas cerca de la ciudad de Castro.

READERS CHOICE AWARD: The winning photo, which will be decided by public vote, will receive a kayak and trekking trip on Chiloe Island for 2 days for 2 persons with the tour operator Chiloe Natural, as well as a stay at Cento de Ocio, a 5-star hotel near the city of Castro.

Todas las imágenes ganadoras del primer y segundo lugar, además de tres menciones honrosas, el ganador del premio Instagram, y el ganador del premio del público, serán impresas para ser protagonistas en las diferentes exposiciones que se realizarán en Chile y Argentina.

También recibirán un ejemplar del libro fotográfico oficial del concurso y una suscripción anual (impresa + digital) de la revista.
